Bio-Jet Fuel from Vegetable Oils: Production Process and Perspective on Modeling and Simulation
Bio-jet fuel plays a vital role in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and reducing the environmental impacts in the air transportation sector. Several production pathways to produce bio-jet fuel have been successfully developed and certified. They can use a variety of materials ranging from edible crops and lignocellulosic biomass to algal oils as feedstock. Various conversion processes can also be used, either thermochemical or biochemical, with and without catalysts. However, among many available processes, producing bio-jet fuel through the hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids (HEFA) route is the most popular. It is also the only route that has so far been commercialized. This review gives an insight into the bio-jet fuel production from vegetable oils, which are the source of HEFA feedstock, with an emphasis on process design and simulation. The use of food and non-food resources as feedstock and the overview of the certified processes for bio-jet fuel production are reviewed and discussed. Additionally, the production process of bio-jet fuel produced from vegetable oils is explored. Finally, the key challenges and prospects of the process simulation and modeling of bio-jet fuel production from vegetable oils are addressed

The development of UAVs to perform complex and dangerous missions is critical. Effective design and path planning are essential for enabling UAVs to undertake such missions. This research proposes a path-planning algorithm for UAVs to automatically perform stealth missions in hazardous environments. The proposed algorithm is intended for indoor applications. The design of the path-planning algorithm in this research is based on the A* algorithm developed by Ren Tianzhu. This algorithm was modified using elements from the Lifelong Planning A* and D* Lite algorithms, developed by Prof. Sven Koenig and Prof. Maxim Likhachev, to address both static and dynamic obstacles and threats. All three path-planning algorithms were evaluated through simulations using a Python program. The results show that the D* Lite-based algorithm typically results in a path length that is 4% shorter on average compared to the Lifelong Planning A* al orithm, but 1.5% longer on average compared to the A* algorithm developed by Ren. Additionally, the execution time for the D* Lite-based algorithm is on average 530.8% less than that of the Lifelong Planning A* algorithm, but 14.7% more compared to the A* algorithm developed by Ren. Despite this, the A* algorithm developed by Ren cannot find paths that avoid dynamic obstacles or threats. In contrast, both the D* Lite and Lifelong Planning A* algorithms can effectively navigate around such dynamic obstacles and threats. Overall, the D* Lite-based path planning demonstrates superior performance compared to both the A* and Lifelong Planning A* algorithms. It is well-suited for stealth missions in hazardous environments that require autonomous operation and the ability to avoid both static and dynamic threats

Ultimate analysis measures the Higher Heating Value (HHV) of chemical elements to determine the energy quantity of a fuel. The accuracy and consistency of the out-of-sample data for the prediction model are essential for data-poor regions like Thailand. The present study conducted three experiments to verify the consistency of the HHV models using out-of-sample data. The published datasets were the treatments, with the accuracy stabilities being the responses. Multiple situations of out-of-sample implementation were simulated. The results confirmed accuracy inconsistencies in both linear and nonlinear HHV models. The models presented statistical indifferences in the average error of the in-sample performance, while the higher moments of error distribution remained distinct. All higher moments of the residuals of the model were different in the out-of-sample data. The simulated examples indicated that previous models could not maintain the accuracy of their training sets. Additionally, they could not provide an accurate prediction of the biomass data of Thailand. Therefore, a practical dataset is necessary to retrain the HHV models before implementation to ensure accurate HHV prediction in Thailand
Efficient Separation of Organic Dyes using Polyvinylidene Fluoride/Polyethylene Glycol-Tin Oxide (PVDF/PEG-SnO2) Nanoparticles Ultrafiltration Membrane
This work studies developing ultrafiltration (UF) membranes using organic and inorganic additives to remove organic dyes at UF conditions with high effectiveness. Flat sheet (18 wt%) polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes were prepared via phase inversion and then developed by adding 6 wt% polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a pore former. Furthermore, the PVDF/PEG membranes were developed by embedding tin oxide nanoparticles (SnO2 NPs) with different contents of 0.3, 0.6, and 0.9 wt%. The prepared membranes were examined for their performance in the dye removal before being characterized using the field emission scanning electron microscope, atomic force microscopy, contact angle, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, surface charge, porosity, mean pore size, tensile strength, and elongation at break. The performance was tested regarding pure water flux (PWF), permeate flux, and dye removal (R%). The effect of dye concentration and pH of the feed solution on the permeate flux and R% was also investigated. In addition, the antifouling features in terms of flux recovery ratio, reversible fouling, irreversible fouling, total fouling, and the R% were studied using the PVDF/PEG membrane and the membrane containing 0.3 wt% of SnO2 NPs. The contact angle decreased from 78.85° to 51.88°, and the PWF rose from 7.16 to 135.71 L/m2.h for PVDF and PVDF/PEG-SnO2 (0.3 wt%) membranes, respectively. The R% of rhodamine B (RhB) slightly decreased from 93.08 to 91.26, and 87.71% for PVDF, PVDF/PEG, and PVDF/PEG-SnO2 (0.3 wt%) membranes, respectively. Then, it increased with increasing NPs concentration up to 90.17 and 92.23% for PVDF/PEG-SnO2 (0.6 wt%) and PVDF/PEG-SnO2 (0.9 wt%) membranes, respectively. Also, the molecular weight cutoff was calculated using RhB as a cationic dye, acid orange 10, and congo red as an anionic dye and it was 520 Da
Characterization of Polyvinylpyrrolidone-2-Acrylamide-2-Methlypropansulphonic Acid Based Polymer as a Corrosion Inhibitor for Copper and Brass in Hydrochloric Acid
Copper and its alloy are susceptible to corrosion in heat exchangers during acid cleaning. The corrosion leads to materials loss and damage; hence it is important to prohibit such corrosion damage using an eco-friendly corrosion inhibitor. In the current work, a polymer composite-based corrosion inhibitor was prepared using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and 2-Acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS). The PVP copolymer undergoes polymerization with the AMPS having several interconnected uniformly sized pores and produces a PVP–AMPS composite with rod-like microstructure. The effect of concentration, time, and temperature on corrosion inhibition efficiency (IE) of PVP–AMPS composite was studied for copper and brass in hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution. The IE increases with concentration and decreases with time and temperature. A change in cathodic and anodic Tafel slopes with the concentration of PVP–AMPS inhibitors was observed. The increase in IE with concentration was attributed to the solubility of PVP–AMPS composite in HCl. However, the decrease in IR with time and temperature was due to the desorption of PVP–AMPS composite from the surface of copper and brass and also due to the exothermic reactions at higher temperature. A few peaks in FTIR spectra at 3000–3100 cm−1 were missing, which is due to the stretching vibration of H–C during the crosslinking polymerization. Further, the absence of the O–H peak indicated that the polymerization process removed the water molecule. The best correlation coefficient (R2) for the Langmuir adsorption mechanism was achieved. A negative Gibbs free energy (ΔG) envisages the spontaneity of the adsorption process. However, the | ΔG| for adsorption was less than 20 kJmol−1 confirming the process as physisorption. A shift in anodic and cathodic branches in the presence of the PVP–AMPS inhibitor indicated a mixed-type inhibitor behavior
Analysis and Optimization of Delamination Factor for Microwaved Cured Pineapple Leaf Fiber Polymer Composite through ANOVA Analysis
Natural fiber-reinforced composites are quickly replacing other materials as the material of choice for various engineering applications because of their high specific strength, low weight, and affordability. Additionally, natural composites come in various forms and are environmentally benign. In particular, the composite needs to be drilled to put the pieces together. The entry and exit levels of the holes are prone to damage during the drilling process. In the present work, Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) was combined with pineapple leaf fiber (PALF) mat after first undergoing a chemical treatment in this investigation. Microwave curing was applied for fabricating the natural fiber composite with the three specified process parameters i.e., microwave power, % of NaOH solution, and weight percentage of treated fiber. After fabrication, the composite delamination factor and modified delamination factor were determined for evaluating the crack propagation after the drilling operation. At constant speed, the feed and diameter of the drill were used for making the drill in different samples. A CNC drilling machine was used to drill the constructed structure at various input parameters. Using the Taguchi approach, the entire work was analyzed. A tensile test was conducted to estimate the strength of the samples with specific parameters. The tensile strength increases up to 24.34 MPa. ANOVA analysis was used to find the best combination and affecting factors. It was observed that the weight percentage of the treated fiber mat has a maximum contribution percentage of 61 % for the processing of natural fiber polymer composite
Product Development of Nutritious Rice Based Gluten-Free Snacks from Different Formulation of Rice Varieties by Extrusion and their Physical, Physicochemical and Sensory Evaluation
Flour from three high-nutritional rice varieties were used to produce gluten-free extruded rice snacks. This study investigated the optimal formulation of the flour mixes from brown jasmine rice (JR) and two other pigmented varieties brown black glutinous rice (BGR) and brown riceberry rice (BB) to produce the extruded snack. Chemical compositions, including dietary fiber and antioxidants of each rice variety were determined. Ten formulations of the flour mixes were evaluated using a Mixture Design and extruded via a single-screw extruder. The physical properties of the extruded snacks from each formulation such as expansion ratio, color, hardness and crispness, as well as their physicochemical properties, including water absorption and solubility indices were analyzed. Three flours showed high protein content (8.1–9.0%). Both pigmented rice (BGR and RR) indicated a higher DPPH scavenging activity at 0.51 ± 0.05 μmol Trolox/g dry weight (DW) and 0.25 μmol Trolox/g DW, respectively. BGR showed the highest % DPPH inhibition (31.63 ± 0.32%). The snack indicated the highest expansion ratio with brown riceberry rice, followed by jasmine rice and brown black glutinous rice. The use of flour mixes indicated higher overall liking scores than one specific flour, while the mixing ratio of jasmine rice, brown black glutinous rice and brown riceberry at 1: 1: 1 (Formulation 7) tended to achieve the highest overall liking (6.47 from 9 points hedonic scale) and the high scores for most of the sensory attributes. The total dietary fiber of the snacks from Formulation 7 was around 4.11% by weight. The results revealed the high potential for using brown jasmine rice and pigmented rice to extrude gluten-free rice snacks
