THE TURNING POINT: PRELIMINARY RESULTS OF UNDERWATER RESEARCH OF THE FORMER HERRN-SEE AT THE VILLAGE OF LUBANOWO (WESTERN POMERANIA, POLAND)
In October 2014 and June 2015, a team of scholars and students from the Institute of Archaeology, University of Warsaw featuring the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology, Polish Academy of Sciences, made an underwater survey in the unnamed lake (formerly Herrn-See) in the village of Lubanowo (formerly Liebenow) in Western Pomerania. During the underwater research, weapons, tools and horse harness parts (including chain reins) were found. They are dated mainly to the Roman Period, but also to the Middle Ages. Some items bear traces of ritual destruction. Parallels may be pointed out with weapons in Przeworsk culture, and to some extent also in Scandinavia. The site should be attributed to sacrificial military deposits. Its extraordinary character lies in the fact that so far it is the only site of its type which is still in its ‘lake stage’, i.e. not a marsh or bog. Most probably it was used by local inhabitants, the people of the Lubusz group.Key words: Herrn-See, Lubanowo village, underwater research, weapon deposit, Roman Period.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.15181/ab.v23i0.129

SEMANTIC FUNCTIONS OF THE POSTVERB UP IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE
The article is concerned with semantic functions of the postverb up – the second component of English verbs of the type move up, fix up, round up (Vup-s) from the point of view of changing the lexical meaning of the verb and its aspectual characteristics in terms of terminativeness / durativeness, and modes of action. Analysis and classification of Vup-s according to their lexical meaning and modes of action reveal the systemic character of the language. Vup-s are viewed as derivational units – analytic words – in the plane of word formation theory.KEY WORDS: semantics, phrasal verbs, postverb, lexical meaning and its aspectual characteristics, lexico-semantic group.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.15181/rh.v19i0.132
“EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL SEA” IN UKRAINIAN LINGUOСULTURAL CONTINUUM
The article is aimed to clear out the cognitive significance of the concept SEA for the Ukrainian mentality, and culture. Turning to the characteristics of Ukrainian cultural concept SEA, the author identifies two main aspects of it: “external” (related to the territorial and geographical self-identification of the Ukrainians) and “internal” (cognitively associated with the “external”, representing the emotional sphere of romantic personality). The study is based on the Ukrainian dooms of the XVI–XVII centures, collected and published in 1927–1931 by Ukrainian researcher Catherine Hrushevska, and on poems about the sea written by outstanding Ukrainian poetess Lesya Ukrainka and poets of the “Executed Renaissance” (A. Vlizko, J. Pluzhnyk and others).Comparison of two dimensions of the Ukrainian concept SEA (external and internal) gives an opportunity to carry out certain parallels between their cognitive and axiological characteristics. Both in its internal and external dimensions the concept SEA reveals the duality, axiological ambivalence, correlation with the idea of primary chaos, danger and overcoming.KEY WORDS: cultural concept SEA, the Ukrainian language, Ukrainian mentality, language model of the world, axiological aspects, “external sea”, “internal sea”, Ukrainian dooms, poets of the “Executed Renaissance”, duality.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.15181/rh.v18i0.122
