Christianisation and cura animarum in the First Christian Communities in Livonia and Prussia during the Period of the Crusades

The paper deals with the relationship between Christianisation and the Church’s ministry in the first Christian Balt communities on the east Baltic coast during the period of the Crusades. It has to be noted that at the turn of and throughout the 13th century, Christian missions were influenced by the attitudes of the new religious movements of the 12th and 13th centuries proclaiming the ‘humanisation’ of the idea of God, and the efforts of the human soul to seek the ‘individualisation’ of salvation. Given these ideas, the paper analyses the forms in which Christianity spread in the Baltic communities, and the impact the inception of the Crusades had on these communities. The research proves that the spread of Christianity took place not only in a ‘theologised’ and therefore ‘difficult’ to understand form, but also in common, knightly (during the Crusades), and other forms of piety. These forms unfolded through the Christian missions and the Church’s ministry that were carried out in parallel, so that they functioned in the first Christian Balt communities in the 13th century.Key words: Christianisation, Christian communities, cura animarum, militia Christi, Crusade

Panašūs ar skirtingi? Dvi krikščioniškos bendruomenės pagoniškame Vilniuje

    Get PDF
XIII–XIV a.

Imitating a Cathedral, or Safeguarding Parochial Foundations? Why Establish a Mansionary Chapel in the Dioceses of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the Early Sixteenth Century?

    Get PDF
A mansionary (from the Latin mansio, ‘a dwelling’) was a member of a community of four to ten secular priests governed by a provost and required to reside by and serve a chantry chapel, similar to a cathedral canon or beneficed chantry priest. Every day they would sing the Hours of Our Lady and offer two Masses, one in honour of Our Lady or the Holy Trinity, and the other for the dead kin of the chantry founder. The chapels they served were attached to a cathedral or a parish church. Those established by the monarch often had pastoral duties, sometimes involving a school or hospice. In Lithuania, they appear from the late 15th century at the cathedrals of Vilnius, Varniai and Lutsk (in Janów Podlaski), and represented a considerable financial investment to establish and maintain. After the Council of Trent, they become even rarer, and concentrate more on pastoral and other educational duties. The paper discusses what a mansionary priest was, and how many of them served in the Diocese of Vilnius and other sees within the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Why was it deemed meet and fit to establish a mansionariate in Lithuania at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, and how were such foundations affected by local Reform movements?Key words: mansionary, chantry, cathedral, parish, Little Hours of Our Lady, memorial, pastoral duties, Lithuania, Poland, Vilnius, Podlasie

LOST AND FOUND: THE VALLUM IN LACU AT OSTROWITE (NORTHERN POLAND). A MULTIDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH CASE STUDY

    Get PDF
The vallum in lacu (rampart by the lake) mentioned in 15th-century written sources as part of the Medieval landscape of Ostrowite (East Pomerania) has been researched by archaeologists and antiquaries since the 19th century. A wide range of non-invasive archaeological prospection methods were applied at Ostrowite in 2010-2015, including magnetic gradiometry, earth resistance, aerial photography, intensive field-walking, geochemical (phosphate) prospection, and the analysis of Airborne Laser Scanning. They were supplemented and verified by small-scale excavation work. This vast set of prospection methods was integrated into a Geographical Information System (GIS), and combined with an analysis of written sources, and allowed for the identification of a previously unknown ring-fort, which for the last 15 years has gone unnoticed by researchers conducting annual excavations in its vicinity. Its discovery and identification were only possible due to the integration of results from various methods, particularly non-invasive ones.Key words: magnetometry, surface survey, phosphate prospection, electrical resistivity, aerial photography, Middle Ages.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.15181/ab.v24i0.156

School leadership is now an education policy priority around the world. As countries are seeking to adapt their educational systems to the needs of contemporary rapidly evolving society, expectations for schools and school leaders are changing. School leadership practice has been greatly influenced by changes in educational governance and school contexts. Many researchers agree that school leaders are crucial for school success and sustainable educational reform, and there is a strong need for leaders who demonstrate key attributes and qualities of professionalism. In these circumstances, the attention should be drawn to professional training and development opportunities for school leaders as well as to knowledge and skills that today’s school leaders should possess in order to manage schools successfully.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.15181/andragogy.v7i0.137

As competition is becoming more and more pronounced, the market entry for newly established companies is a complex task. This process becomes even more complicated if a company is small, because it has to deal not only with lack of experience, but also with a lack of funds. Business incubators have been spreading all over the world for more than half a century. It suggests that this type of sponsorship of small and medium business will be relevant in the next decade and continuous research in this field will help to provide optimal support for companies.KEYWORDS: small and medium business, business incubators, business incubation processes.JEL CODES: M10, M13DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.15181/rfds.v21i1.140
