This paper analyses some of the most important features of postmodernism, determining the way of a modern person’s life, relationship with oneself and, ultimately, with transcendence. One of the main aspects of contemporary society is excessive consumption, in fact relativism, secularism and subjectivism. These phenomena, in their psychological and theological sense, promote the disintegration of the integrity of the human person. This phenomenon becomes very visible in cases of illness, suffering and death. The modern man has lost the harmony between the body, the spirit and the soul, and at the same time the right relationship with God. It does arise in human life between the various dimensions of life: personal self-awareness, family, work, business, work, and other fields. Without faith, postmodernism does not accept man’s inevitability of death, strives to ignore it, or simply flee from it. But this does not give peace to human. The search for the meaning of life and death is in the nature of man, so only believing in a supernatural world, the fostering of spiritual values gives real hope.KEY WORDS: Human Being, Postmodernism, Death, Faith, Hope

The tradition of the European maritime culture is directly related to development of spiritual and mental horizons of the personality. The most prominent factors of the maritime development are as follows: Arabic origins of the maritime navigation and astrophysics; Greek mythology and philosophy raising sea symbols; maritime missions, which have been encouraged from the Judeo-Christian mentality and manifested on new geographic and ethnographic discoveries. The decisive role of this mentality appeared in formation of European states and institutional culture, in development of literacy and rising of universities from monastic libraries (X–XI c.) and first Portuguese maritime schools (XV c.). Aim of the research is a revelation of moments of a transcendental ideal of the European maritime self-concept as an important cultural leap. Tasks of the research are as follows: analysis of a pagan basis of the maritime self-concept, and discussion of a valuable direction of the Judeo-Christian maritime self-concept. The research type is theoretically descriptive. There were used such research methods: retrospective, comparative, heuristic analysis of scientific literature, interpretation, systemization and synthesis. Methodological attitude is neotomism that refers to the transcendental ideal of the European culture identity formation in long-term prospect.KEY WORDS: Europe, maritime self-concept, transcendental ideal, paganism, Judaism, Christianity

Lapkričio mėnesį, kai krikščioniškajame pasaulyje nuodugniau apmąstomas santykis su mirusiaisiais, man vienam pirmųjų teko pasinerti į monografijos „Krikščioniškoji eschatologija“ mirties apmąstymų gelmes. Džiaugiuosi, kad dar neišgyvenęs savosios mirties gelmių, pirmiausia galėjau nerti į paskutiniųjų dalykų gelmes per knygos puslapius, kuriuose formuojamas teisingas, atviras, viltingas požiūris į mirtį. Tad norisi pasidalinti keliomis įžvalgomis, kilusiomis skaitant Lietuvių katalikų mokslo akademijos akademiko A. Ramono monografiją, kurioje pateikiama žmonijos kelrodžio į amžinybę paieška, akademiškai atskleidžiamas paskutiniųjų dalykų grožis

DETERMINANTS OF LITHUANIAN PATERNAL AND SPOUSAL TIME ALLOCATION WITH CHILDREN

This article analyzes paternal time allocation with children in Lithuania and explores paternal and spousal cross effects in time investment. Effects of paternal health status, alcohol consumption and health insurance status on paternal-child time allocation are also examined. The research finds a modest after-tax family income effect for paternal time, but not when examining paternal-spousal cross effects for child time investment. Regarding paternal-spousal cross effects, while both are very highly significant statistically, this research finds almost twice the complementarity for the Lithuanian paternal hour with children for spousal time with children than for a spousal hour for paternal time with children. The paper identifies several possible factors in the Lithuanian context contributing to a complementary effect and away from a substitutionary effect. Spousal age and educational effects – the former negative, the latter positive – are found for spousal time allocation with children but not found significant paternally. To our knowledge this is the first study to examine paternal time allocation in Lithuania for children including health status, alcohol consumption, insurance status and paternal/spousal cross effects for time allocation with children. Compared to our previous research, it also supports caution against assuming that parental cross effects on time allocation in a Lithuanian social context mirror such in the U.S. KEYWORDS: parental-child time allocation, household income modeling, household labor gender effects, labor market

he article by Russian ethnomusicologist Larisa Belogurova (Лариса Белогурова) is devoted to a special genre of wedding ceremonial songs of the Smolensk region – teasers (draznilki) with which the parties of the bride and groom exchange throughout the ritual. Author analyzes the poetics of such songs, their ritual attachment, the specifics of timbre-intonation and polyphonic implementation. The plot structure allows to define the significant similarities of this group of songs with wedding sutartinės from northeastern Lithuania, despite the obvious differences in their musical organization.Key words: Smolensk region, wedding ritual, ritual songs, ritual abuse, musical-poetic agon, Balto-Slavic community.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.15181/td.v13i0.169

In this article Ukrainian ethnomusicologist Vasyl Koval (Василь Коваль) discusses Christmas carols that were recorded in the neighborhoods of the northwest Gorgany and have a 14-sylable (the 5 + 5 + 4 verse) rhythmic structure (the type A-1 by the Volodymyr Hoshovsky definition). Particular attention is paid to the transformation and modification processes in melodies of this type. In the investigated area the Christmas carols of type A are present in their derivative form, and their modifications occur along with two aspects: 1) transformation of the rhythmic structure of refrains, which determines the change of the “triple” principle of rhythmic organization into the “dual” one, 2) abbreviation of refrains (or their destruction). The author of the article has come to the conclusion that the prevalence of the type A carols on a large part of the investigated territory questions the V. Hoshovsky’s definition of the western boundary of this type’s population.Key words: Ukrainian traditional music, Christmas carols, transformation and modification processes, melo-areas, melo-dialects.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.15181/td.v13i0.169
