The Effect of Human Capital as an Output of Education on Productivity%253A A Panel Data Analysis for Developing Countries
In the rapidly changing atmosphere of the global economy, productivity has become a very important concept for long-term economic growth, development, regional and global competitiveness, raising social living standards and increasing the level of welfare for countries. In the 21st century, when scientific knowledge, technology, innovation, Ramp%253BD and entrepreneurship manifest themselves in every stage of the production process, human capital has come to the fore as an important and determining factor that increases productivity. In the current study, the effect of human capital, one of the most important outputs of education, on country productivity was analyzed for 24 developing countries, including Turkey, which are in the upper middle income group. In the application part, a panel data set was created for the 24 countries included in the study with the series obtained from the database of PWT10.0 for the period of 1980-2019. The Human Capital Index was used to reveal the human capital status of the countries included in the analysis and the Total Factor Productivity Index was used to reveal the productivity status. The Granger Panel Causality Test was employed to determine whether there is a short-term relationship and the Westerlund Panel Cointegration Test was employed to determine whether there is a long-term relationship between the two variables. As a result of a bilateral causality relationship was found between human capital and productivity in the short-term and a cointegration relationship in the long-term. The study is important and different from other studies in that it focuses on the concepts of human capital and productivity, which have a very limited place in the education literature, although they are directly related to education, and it is grounded on an interdisciplinary approach (bringing together education, sociology and econometrics)
The Effect of Family-centered quot%253BI Recognize My Emotions Asynchronous Activity Seriesquot%253B on Children%252339%253Bs Emotion RegulationSkills
The main purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of emotion-related video activities in the quot%253BFamily-Centered I Recognize My Emotions Asynchronous Activity Seriesquot%253B which is prepared for children on children%252339%253Bs emotion regulation skills. Within the framework of this main purpose, differences in children%252339%253Bs emotion regulation skill levels were determined according to the demographic data obtained both from the whole group and from the experimental group of children included in the pre and post-tests. At the beginning of the study, 103 children participated in the research. However only 25 children were able to complete the study. In this study, the four-point Likert type quot%253BEmotion Regulation Skillsquot%253B scale consisting of 24 items, adapted to Turkish by Batum and Yağmurlu in 2007, was used. It was conducted as quasi-experimental research in a single-group pretest-posttest model. In the part of the research conducted with 103 children, it was found out that the children of mothers with postgraduate education degree had higher emotional regulation skill levels than those of mothers with undergraduate education degree. It has been revealed that children whose mothers were employed have higher emotional regulation skills than children whose mothers do not work. In addition, as a result of the series of asynchronous video-based activities given to the children in the second part of the study, it was observed that the children%252339%253Bs post-test results increased significantly in terms of emotion regulation skill scores
Teaching the 21st Century Learning Skills with the Critical Thinking Technique Based on the Argumentation Method
In todays world, rather than students who memorize information and only perform assigned tasks, education is more oriented towards raising inquisitive individuals with a strong consciousness. Contemporary education, thus, seeks to provide students with the abilities to think critically and analytically, to question or prove with arguments, and to build causal relationships between subjects in order to use the knowledge learned when needed. Taking all these expectations into account, teaching critical thinking skills and techniques based on the argumentation method can help students progress both cognitively and behaviorally. To this end, the goal of this qualitative case study is to provide students with the 21st century learning skills using the critical thinking technique on the basis of argumentation-based learning. The research group comprises of 40 students from Hatay Mustafa Kemal Universitys Faculty of Education. In the study, a semi-structured interview form was employed to gather data. As a result of the research, two main conclusions were made. Firstly, subjects can be better comprehended through classes that incorporate the use of ideas, views, proof, or evidence. Such classes can be taught in greater depth and without much difficulty. Furthermore, students speaking and oral abilities, as well as comprehension skills, increase in sessions taught using the argumentation methodand critical thinking strategies. Yet, it should be noted that in order to attain these results, lessons should be planned in accordance with the mentioned methods
Education of Incarcerated Young People in Malawi%253A Strategic Plan versus Reality
Education must be accessible to all citizens, including those incarcerated in penitentiaries, to contribute to the socio-economic development of the countries. In Malawi, to enhance incarcerated peoples access to quality education in correctional facilities, the Malawi Prisons Service (MPS) included education as a strategic objective in its five-year strategic plan covering the period between 2016 and 2021. This article analysed and compared this strategic education objective against reality to ascertain its implementation and relevance during the implementation period. Guided by Bunning%252339%253Bs model of strategic planning, the study employed a qualitative content analysis research method using the %252339%253Bhybrid approach%252339%253B. The study mainly used data from the semi-structured interviews involving purposively selected 25 educators and officials from five young offenders%252339%253B rehabilitation centres in Malawi. Findings revealed a mismatch between the contents of the strategic education objective and the actual reality. The study identified characteristics of Bunnings ritual approach since it was revealed that the strategic plan was developed to please the government and development partners. From the education objective viewpoint, the strategic plan was hardly used during the five years since the educational activities remained the same (even worse) after the implementation period. The young offenders%252339%253B facilities were still stuck in the punitive philosophy, as evidenced by limited resources in the education section and the management%252339%253Bs priority on coerced farming instead of education. It was recommended that the correctional administrations needed to prioritise the provision of quality education for school-aged offenders in correctional policies
