Conceptual and Psychometric Properties of a Self-efficacy Perception Scale Based on Teaching Turkish as a Foreign Language
Get PDFThe main purpose of this descriptive research study is to investigate the conceptual and psychometric properties of a self-efficacy perception scale developed for determining self-efficacy perception of 3rd and 4th grade Turkish pre-service teachers, who took Turkish as a Foreign Language (TFL) course theoretically in undergraduate level, towards teaching TFL. As a result of analysis of the related literature and written responses of participants, researchers initially formed an item-pool by considering that they best suit to TFL context. Then, they adapted the items into 5-point Likert scale. The current instrument was administered to 176 pre-service Turkish teachers with a random sampling design. The repetitive statistics showed that the instrument has three factors with 25 items that measure the self-efficacy of participants. The factors which have been identified in the instrument possess the construct validity and psychometric properties of internal consistency. The reliability and validity of the scale were analyzed with SPPS 17.0. According to exploratory factor analysis results for maintaining construct validity of the scale, factor values of the scale changed between 0.57 and 0.82, and total variant of the scale was found to be 70.379 %25. As for the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) measuring of sampling adequacy and Bartlett‟s test of sphericity, KMO is found to be 0.95 being greater than 0.60 and Bartlett‟s test is large with Chi-square value (chi%253B2(300) %253D 4143.5%253B plt%253B ,0001) and significant at 0.000. As for reliability, the results showed that the items of scale in terms of item-total correlation changed between 0.45 and 0.84, and the total internal reliability coefficient of the scale (Cronbach‟s Alpha) was calculated as 0.972. Additionally, the two scholars gave their positive opinions in favor of the scale for face validity.The results indicates that the scale has the validity and reliability. Furthermore, the findings of the study confirmed that this scale had validity and reliability that could be used in TFL context for exploring pre-service teachers‟ self-efficacy perception towards teaching TFL

Similar Demands, Different Responses%253A Teacher Evaluation in the United Kingdom and Singapore
Get PDFUsing a conceptual framework grounded in globalization and the knowledge economy, this paper addresses teacher evaluation policy reform in the United Kingdom*** and Singapore. Specifically, the authors discuss similar demands faced by both countries%253A maintaining economic competitiveness in a globalized society, preparing citizens to participate in the knowledge economy, and improving teacher quality to facilitate enhanced student learning. Both the UK and Singapore respond to these demands by developing teacher evaluation policies. However, due to the mediating factors of student demographics, educational priorities, and the structure of education systems in each context, the UK and Singapore have created different teacher evaluation systems. It is argued that despite these varying responses, several essential areas underlie all successful teacher evaluation systems. Considering these foundational elements, implications for teacher evaluation policy reform in the United States are discussed

A Qualitative Evaluation of Instructors’ Exam Questions at a Primary Education Department in terms of Certain Variables
Get PDFThe purpose of this qualitative research study is to analyze instructors exam questions at a Primary Education Department in terms of the exams period, the comprehensibility of the instructions, cognitive level, and the appropriateness to the critical thinking. This qualitative study is based on document analysis method. 100 randomly selected exam papers and 1665 questions asked in these exams are analyzed by three experts in the field. The results conclude that the exam questions are generally at knowledge level in terms of cognitive domain and they are not appropriate to critical thinking
The Relationship between Economic Growth and School Enrollment Rates%253A Time Series Evidence from Turkey
Get PDFIt has long been argued that there is a close relationship between education and economic development at both individual and societal levels. Economists have found that the level of educational infrastructure is an important indicator of economic development. Similarly, economic variables have been found to be strongly related to school enrollment in many studies. Hence, we investigate the relationship between GDP per capita and school enrollment rates at the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels during the period 1980-2008 in Turkey. To this end, we employed Toda-Yamamotos (1995) causality test. Findings of our analyses suggest that there is a statistically significant relationship between GDP per capita and the school enrollment rate at the primary level bi-directionally. A significant relationship between these two variables at the secondary level was also indicated in the study, but this relationship was only significant in one direction%253A from the GDP per capita to the secondary school enrollment rate. For the tertiary level, no casual relationship was found between changes in GDP per capita and the school enrollment rate

Perceptions of Faculty Members Regarding Obsolescence Issues at a Turkish State University
No full textThe current study was carried out at a Turkish state university with a population of 262 fulltime faculty members to investigate the obsolescence issues. The framework is mainly based on Kaufmans (1974) Direct Effects Model of Obsolescence using a 24-item survey, which questioned how frequent faculty faced obsolescence related with individual characteristics, work environment, organizational climate and whether these factors were related to faculty members gender, age, academic rank and work area. The results suggest that the faculty felt almost no obsolescence regarding these areas which gives hope for the future activities of the institution. Although participant responses did not vary with regard to gender, age and academic title%253B significant differences among the fields of study were found suggesting that faculty members at Health Sciences were surpassing all other fields, particularly the fields of Science and Social Sciences refuting a recent study. Implications and suggestions for faculty development endeavors were provided
