    Akulturasi Budaya Jawa dan Islam dalam Tradisi Dugderan di Masjid Agung Kauman Semarang: Bentuk, Makna dan Proses Historis

    Abstract: The Dugderan tradition in Semarang City is a cultural phenomenon rich in acculturation values between Javanese and Islamic culture. This study aims to describe its forms, analyze its meanings and values, and identify the historical process of acculturation within the Dugderan tradition centered at the Kauman Great Mosque of Semarang. Using a qualitative-historical approach, this study finds that Dugderan functions not only as an official marker for the beginning of the Ramadan fasting period, but also as a contextual medium of da\u27wah and a unifying force for a multicultural society. The most prominent expressions of acculturation appear in the symbols of Warak Ngendog and the ritual processions of “dug” (drum beating of the bedug) and “der” (cannon). The values contained include tolerance, self-purification (wara\u27) before Ramadan, and joy. Historically, this tradition originated in 1881 AD during the reign of the Regent of Semarang, Raden Mas Tumenggung Aryo Purbaningrat, as an effort to unite differences in determining the beginning of the fast among Muslims in Semarang. This research contributes to the literature on Nusantara Islamic studies and the preservation of local cultural heritage. Abstrak: Tradisi Dugderan di Kota Semarang merupakan fenomena budaya yang kaya akan nilai akulturasi antara Budaya Jawa dan Islam. Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan bentuk-bentuk, menganalisis makna dan nilai, serta mengidentifikasi proses historis akulturasi dalam tradisi Dugderan yang berpusat di Masjid Agung Kauman Semarang. Menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif- historis , studi ini menemukan bahwa Dugderan berfungsi tidak hanya sebagai penanda resmi dimulainya ibadah puasa Ramadan, tetapi juga sebagai media dakwah yang kontekstual dan pemersatu masyarakat multikultural. Wujud akulturasi yang paling menonjol tampak pada simbol Warak Ngendog dan prosesi ritual \u27dug\u27 (bedug) dan \u27der\u27 (meriam). Nilai-nilai yang terkandung mencakup toleransi, kesucian diri (wara\u27) menjelang Ramadan, dan kegembiraan (sukacita). Secara historis, tradisi ini berawal sejak tahun 1881 Masehi pada masa pemerintahan Bupati Semarang Raden Mas Tumenggung Aryo Purbaningrat , sebagai upaya menyatukan perbedaan penentuan awal puasa di kalangan umat Islam Semarang.     Abstract: This article is the result of a study of the work Islamic Doctrine and Civilization, by Nurcholish Madjid. This work, which is a collection of papers from the Paramadina Religious Studies Club (KKA), presents a critical analysis of Islamic faith and civilization. In this work, Madjid focuses on the importance of understanding Islamic doctrine and how this doctrine influences the development of Islamic civilization. Madjid also discussed pluralism and openness in Islam, as well as how essential Islamic values can be applied in everyday life. This work is considered the basis for the struggle to develop a modern and relevant Islamic civilization in the Indonesian context. Abstrak: Tulisan ini merupakan hasil telaah atas buku Islam Doktrin dan Peradaban, karya Nurcholish Madjid. Buku yang merupakan kumpulan makalah Klub Kajian Agama (KKA) Paramadina ini menyajikan analisis kritis terhadap keimanan dan peradaban Islam. Dalam karya ini, Madjid memfokuskan pada pentingnya memahami doktrin Islam dan bagaimana doktrin tersebut mempengaruhi perkembangan peradaban Islam. Madjid juga membahas tentang pluralisme dan keterbukaan dalam Islam, serta bagaimana nilai-nilai esensial Islam dapat diterapkan dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Penulis berasumsi bahwa buku ini sebagai landasan pembangunan peradaban Islam modern yang relevan dalam konteks peradaban di Indonesia, sehingga menjadi bagian penting dalam memahami corak peradaban Indonesia modern yang memiliki dimensi nilia-nilai universal (rahmatan lil álamin)

    Exploring Sprituality in Grave Pilgrimage: The Case of the Berbah Community at the Kanjeng Panembahan Purboyo Cemetery

    This study explores the religious and cultural significance of pilgrimage practices among the Berbah people at the Kanjeng Panembahan Purboyo Cemetery in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. It aims to examine how pilgrimage practices continue to be observed in contemporary Yogyakarta despite the city\u27s increasing modernization. Limited scholarly attention has been paid to understanding the significance of the continued practice of grave pilgrimage in this country, so this research attempts to capture the lived experiences of local communities using a descriptive qualitative case study approach. The data were collected through participant observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation, allowing for a rich contextual understanding of the phenomenon. This study found that pilgrimage to the cemetery has a deep spiritual meaning for the Berbah people, manifested in three main dimensions: (1) achieving peace of mind through sacred relationships, (2) becoming more aware of human death and impermanence, and (3) clarifying and strengthening one’s purpose in life. These aspects contribute to a higher sense of direction and serenity in the lives of pilgrims, as they believe that pilgrimage invites divine blessings that guide them towards a more meaningful and focused existence

    Conquering Oppression through Cosmopolitanism: Islam, Race, and Racism in Writings of Edward Wilmot Blyden and Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba

    Abstract: This essay analyzes the Sufi religious thoughts of Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, the founder of the Murid Islamic brotherhood of Senegal, as reflections of the cosmopolitan openness to the “other” and the rest of the world that the Pan-African scholar, Edward Wilmot Blyden, celebrates in his book, entitled Christianity, Islam and the Negro Race (1887). Blyden admired, in late nineteenth-century West African Islamic traditions, cosmopolitanism, and rejections of violence that one also finds in Bamba’s book, Mawahibul Quddus. Bamba’s text was produced in the late nineteenth century and was translated into English in 2003 as God’s Sacred Identity.Using Blyden’s book as an early exploration of the West African cosmopolitan tradition of resistance and celebration of rationality that mesmerized him, this essay explores how similar ideas were noticeable in Bamba’s Sufism. In his theology, Bamba also examines how reason and cosmopolitanism can dismantle racial and other forms of intolerance and domination.Abstrak: Esai ini menganalisis pemikiran religius Sufi dari Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, pendiri  Murid Islamic brotherhoodof Senegal, sebagai refleksi keterbukaan kosmopolitan terhadap "yang lain" dan dunia, yang dirayakan oleh cendekiawan Pan-Afrika, Edward Wilmot Blyden dalam bukunya yang berjudul Christianity, Islam and the Negro Race (1887). Blyden mengagumi tradisi Islam Afrika Barat pada akhir abad ke-19 yang menunjukkan kosmopolitanisme dan penolakan terhadap kekerasan, yang juga ditemukan dalam buku Bamba, Mawahibul Quddus. Teks Bamba ini ditulis pada akhir abad ke-19 dan diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa Inggris pada tahun 2003 dengan judul God’s Sacred Identity.     Abstract: This study examines the role of Sultan Abdul Hamid II in defending Palestine from the efforts of the Jewish Zionist movement in the period 1876–1909. The focus of the study is directed at the political, diplomatic, and ideological strategies implemented by Sultan Abdul Hamid II to reject the offer of the Zionist figure Theodor Herzl who attempted to purchase Palestinian land for Jewish settlement. This study uses a qualitative method with a literature study approach, referring to primary sources such as the memoirs of Sultan Abdul Hamid II and historical documents of the Ottoman Empire, as well as secondary sources in the form of books, scientific articles, and previous theses. Data analysis was carried out through the stages of heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography, with a geopolitical theoretical framework that views the relationship between geographical conditions and political policies. The results of the study show that Sultan Abdul Hamid II rejected all forms of sales of Palestinian land to foreign parties, implemented a Pan-Islamic policy to strengthen Muslim solidarity, and tightened administrative supervision and restrictions on Jewish immigration. This decision not only maintained the territorial integrity of the Ottoman Empire, but also strengthened the political awareness of Muslims regarding the importance of Palestine as a holy land. This research contributes to the historical understanding of territorial defense policy in the context of colonialism and religious nationalist movements in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Abstrak: Penelitian ini membahas peran Sultan Abdul Hamid II dalam mempertahankan Palestina dari upaya gerakan Zionis Yahudi pada periode 1876–1909. Fokus penelitian diarahkan pada strategi politik, diplomatik, dan ideologis yang diterapkan Sultan Abdul Hamid II untuk menolak tawaran tokoh Zionis Theodor Herzl yang berupaya membeli tanah Palestina sebagai wilayah pemukiman Yahudi. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi kepustakaan, mengacu pada sumber-sumber primer seperti memoar Sultan Abdul Hamid II dan dokumen sejarah Kesultanan Utsmaniyah, serta sumber sekunder berupa buku, artikel ilmiah, dan skripsi terdahulu. Analisis data dilakukan melalui tahapan heuristik, verifikasi, interpretasi, dan historiografi, dengan kerangka teori geopolitik yang memandang keterkaitan antara kondisi geografis dan kebijakan politik. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Sultan Abdul Hamid II menolak segala bentuk penjualan tanah Palestina kepada pihak asing, menerapkan kebijakan Pan-Islamisme untuk memperkuat solidaritas umat Islam, serta memperketat pengawasan administratif dan pembatasan imigrasi Yahudi. Keputusan ini tidak hanya mempertahankan integritas wilayah Kesultanan Utsmaniyah, tetapi juga memperkuat kesadaran politik umat Islam terhadap pentingnya Palestina sebagai tanah suci.     EFEKTIVITAS INFORMASI KOLEKSI KEBUN RAYA BOGOR MELALUI MEDIA KOMUNIKASI YANG TERINTEGRASI DENGAN WEB

    This study was aimed to determine the effectiveness of the use of information media in the Bogor Botanical Gardens. The method used is a qualitative research method with a case study approach accompanied by interviews with random sampling techniques. The information media that became the research material was the information board in the Bogor Botanical Gardens. The Bogor Botanical Gardens are a plant conservation area under the supervision of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences. Although in its current development the function of the Bogor Botanical Gardens also includes a tourism function. To meet this need, the Bogor Botanical Gardens has prepared information media in the form of an information board that is integrated with the Bogor Botanical Garden\u27s web page. From these developments the author intends to examine the effectiveness of the information media. As a result, there are still many things that must be addressed regarding the information media. Its presence is still considered ineffective for some people because of the difficulty of accessing web pages even though they are already using a QR code. Thus, this is an important note for the Bogor Botanical Gardens manager regarding the effectiveness of using the information media

    A CRITICAL DISCOURSE ANALYSIS OF KING SALMAN’S SPEECH AT THE G20 RIYADH SUMMIT

    This study examines the discourse strategies employed by King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud in his speech at the 2020 G20 Riyadh Summit using Teun A. van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework. It aims to reveal how the ideology of monarchical legitimacy is constructed through textual structures at the macro-, super-, and microstructural levels, and how these constructions shape social cognition and reproduce power relations within the global socio-political context. The significance of this study lies in its effort to understand political speeches delivered at international forums as symbolic instruments of legitimation, particularly those produced by monarchical leaders. The findings indicate that King Salman’s speech strategically constructs a representation of Saudi Arabia as a responsible, solution-oriented, and humanitarian-oriented global actor. This discourse frames G20 countries as legitimate authorities in determining the direction of global governance, while positioning the international community as beneficiaries of these policies. These findings demonstrate that G20 discourse functions as a discursive mechanism to normalize and legitimize Saudi Arabia’s monarchical leadership within a global political landscape marked by uncertainty resulting from health, economic, and global governance crises.Penelitian ini menganalisis strategi wacana Raja Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud dalam pidato KTT G20 Riyadh 2020 menggunakan pendekatan Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) model Teun A. van Dijk. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengungkap bagaimana ideologi legitimasi monarki dikonstruksi melalui struktur teks pada level makro, super, dan mikro, serta bagaimana konstruksi tersebut membentuk kognisi sosial dan mereproduksi relasi kuasa dalam konteks sosial-politik global. Urgensi penelitian ini terletak pada upaya memahami pidato politik di forum internasional sebagai instrumen simbolik legitimasi, khususnya yang diproduksi oleh pemimpin negara monarki. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa pidato Raja Salman secara strategis membangun representasi Arab Saudi sebagai aktor global yang bertanggung jawab, solutif, dan berorientasi pada kemanusiaan universal. Wacana ini membingkai negara-negara G20 sebagai otoritas sah dalam menentukan arah tata kelola global, sementara masyarakat internasional diposisikan sebagai penerima manfaat. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa wacana G20 berfungsi sebagai mekanisme diskursif untuk menormalisasi dan melegitimasi kepemimpinan monarki Arab Saudi dalam lanskap politik global yang sarat ketidakpastian akibat krisis kesehatan, ekonomi, dan kepercayaan terhadap tata kelola global

    Abstract: This paper examines the concept of Wahdat al-wujūd as expressed in Ahmad Dhani\u27s song "Satu," part of the controversial album "Laskar Cinta." The album generated significant debate due to its perceived religious implications, particularly concerning its cover art and the symbolism in the "Satu" music video. Critics accused the album of blasphemy, associating it with the teachings of Syeh Siti Jenar, a proponent of Wahdat al-wujūd, which asserts the unity of God and humanity. This research employs a hermeneutic approach to analyze the lyrics of "Satu," focusing on the language, symbolism, and metaphors that reflect or reinterpret traditional views of Wahdat al-wujūd. The analysis reveals that the song conveys themes of divine love and spiritual unity, suggesting that human experience is a reflection of the divine presence. Key findings indicate that the lyrics express a profound yearning for closeness to God, highlighting that all actions are manifestations of divine will. In conclusion, this study emphasizes the significance of "Satu" as a modern artistic representation of Sufi thought, demonstrating how contemporary music can be a medium for spiritual exploration and the expression of divine unity. Abstrak: Makalah ini mengkaji konsep Wahdat al-wujūd yang diekspresikan dalam lagu “Satu” karya Ahmad Dhani, bagian dari album “Laskar Cinta” yang kontroversial. Album ini menimbulkan perdebatan yang signifikan karena implikasi religius yang dirasakan, khususnya mengenai sampul album dan simbolisme dalam video musik “Satu”. Para kritikus menuduh album tersebut sebagai penistaan agama, mengaitkannya dengan ajaran Syeh Siti Jenar, seorang pendukung Wahdat al-wujūd, yang menegaskan kesatuan Tuhan dan manusia. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan hermeneutika untuk menganalisis lirik lagu “Satu,” dengan fokus pada bahasa, simbolisme, dan metafora yang merefleksikan atau menafsirkan kembali pandangan tradisional Wahdat al-wujūd. Analisis tersebut mengungkapkan bahwa lagu tersebut menyampaikan tema cinta ilahi dan kesatuan spiritual, yang menunjukkan bahwa pengalaman manusia merupakan cerminan dari kehadiran ilahi. Temuan utama menunjukkan bahwa lirik lagu tersebut mengekspresikan kerinduan yang mendalam akan kedekatan dengan Tuhan, menyoroti bahwa semua tindakan adalah manifestasi dari kehendak ilahi.     The addition of editorials in translations is often found in Islamic religious books, especially in the discipline of Uṣūl al-Fiqh. One example is the Syarḥ al-Waraqāt by Imām Ḥaramain, translated by Mujiburrahman. This book is written in the ījāz style (few words but rich in meaning), so it requires additional explanations to make its meaning easier for readers to understand. This study aims to describe the forms of addition strategies in the translation of the Syarḥ al-Waraqāt book and explain the process of its occurrence in the context of Arabic-Indonesian translation. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with documentation methods and note-taking techniques. The results show that the translation process is in line with Peter Newmark\u27s translation strategy theory. Two forms of addition strategies were found: additions made based on considerations of language structure, and additions made based on semantic considerations to clarify or enrich the meaning of the text. The addition process is carried out in three ways: inserting additions directly into the text, writing them in brackets, or placing them in footnotes. These three methods reflect the application of amplification and description techniques in the translation of Islamic books

    Diplomatic Alliance Procession Between Elizabeth I with Murad III Amidst European Tensions (1583-1603)

    Abstract:  A unique diplomatic alliance once existed between the Tudor Kingdom of England under the leadership of Queen Elizabeth I, a Protestant, and the Ottoman Empire under the leadership of Sultan Murad III, a Muslim, at the end of the 16th century AD. This alliance was a mutually beneficial relationship between two nations that emerged amid religious and political tensions in Europe, following Queen Elizabeth I\u27s excommunication from the European Catholic Church by Pope Pius V through the papal bull, Regnan in Excelsis, for converting her kingdom\u27s ideology to Protestantism. In a situation of isolation and threat from Catholic powers, particularly King Philip II of Spain, Queen Elizabeth I instead forged a strategic partnership with the largest Islamic power at the time, the Ottoman Empire, to weaken Catholic hegemony in Europe. This study highlights the alliance process between Queen Elizabeth I and Sultan Murad III amid religious and political tensions throughout Europe using an international relations approach, the concept of diplomatic alliance, and Hans J. Morgenthau\u27s theory of realism. The research method employed is historical research, which consists of heuristics (source collection), verification (source criticism), interpretation (source analysis), and historiography (historical writing). The findings of this study describe that the diplomatic alliance process officially began in 1583 AD, with the dispatch of William Harborne as the official British ambassador to Constantinople to obtain special privileges from Turkey. This relationship also aimed to weaken European Catholic hegemony, open trade routes through capitulation, and establish a network of British consuls in Turkish territory. This diplomatic alliance between two ideologically distinct worlds was pragmatic and flexible, yet it was shaped by dynamics arising from changes in British ambassadors, diplomatic competition, and internal political shifts in Turkey.   Abstrak: Hubungan Aliansi diplomatik yang unik pernah terjalin antara Kerajaan Tudor Inggris di bawah kepemimpinan Ratu Elizabeth I, seorang Protestan, dengan Kesultanan Turki Utsmani di bawah kepemimpinan Sultan Murad III, seorang muslim pada akhir abad ke-16 M. Aliansi ini merupakan hubungan mutualistik antara dua negara yang terjadi di tengah ketegangan agama dan politik di Benua Eropa, setelah Ratu Elizabeth I mengalami pengucilan dari Gereja Katolik Eropa oleh Paus Pius V melalui bulla kepausan, Regnan in Excelsis, karena mengubah ideologi kerajaannya menjadi Protestan. Dalam situasi isolasi dan ancaman dari kekuatan Katolik, terutama dari Raja Philip II dari Spanyol, Ratu Elizabeth I justru menjalin kerja sama strategis dengan kekuatan Islam terbesar saat itu, Kesultanan Turki, guna melemahkan hegemoni Katolik di Eropa. Penelitian ini menyoroti proses aliansi yang terjadi antara Ratu Elizabeth I dengan Sultan Murad III di tengah gejolak ketegangan agama dan politik di seluruh Eropa dengan menggunakan pendekatan hubungan internasional, konsep aliansi diplomatik, serta teori realisme oleh Hans J. Morgenthau. Sedangkan untuk metode penelitiannya menggunakan metode penelitian sejarah yang terdiri dari heuristik (pengumpulan sumber), verifikasi (kritik sumber), interpretasi (penafsiran sumber), dan historiografi (penulisan sejarah). Temuan dalam penelitian ini menggambarkan bahwa prosesi aliansi diplomatik dimulai secara resmi pada tahun 1583 M, dengan mengirim William Harborne sebagai duta besar resmi Inggris ke Konstantinopel, guna memperoleh hak istimewa dari Turki. hubungan ini juga bertujuan melemahkan hegemoni Katolik eropa, membuka jalur perdagangan lewat kapitulasi, dan membentuk jaringan konsul Inggris di wilayah Turki. Aliansi diplomatik antara dua dunia ideologi yang berbeda ini, bersifat pragmatis dan fleksibel, namun diwarnai dinamika akibat pergantian duta Inggris, persaingan diplomatik, dan perubahan politik internal Turki
