    Get PDF
This study examines the relationship between conceptual understanding and the level of engagement students in mathematics. Conceptual understanding was assessed across key mathematical topics, including sequences, polynomials, circles, coordinate geometry, combinatorics, probability, and measures of position. On the other hand, engagement was assessed through its cognitive, behavioral, emotional, and social dimensions. Employing a descriptive-correlational research design, this study considered data from 128 students selected through proportional sampling. A researcher-made test was used to measure conceptual understanding, and a validated scale was adopted to assess student engagement. Descriptive statistics showed that 39.4% of students had very low conceptual understanding, while only 8.59% demonstrated a very high level. The students have very low performance in topics such as factoring polynomials and interpreting measures of position. Engagement levels varied, with students reporting the lowest level of engagement in terms of cognitive dimension (x̄ = 2.59), while behavioral (x̄ = 2.80), emotional (x̄ = 2.90), and social engagement (x̄ = 2.89) were at moderate levels. This study found significant positive correlations between conceptual understanding and all dimensions of engagement, with the strongest relationship observed between conceptual understanding and social engagement (p = 0.629, p = 0.001). These findings highlight the consistent association between engagement and learning outcomes. This study suggests that future research be initiated to improve student engagement and conceptual understanding in mathematics

Analisis Semiotik dalam Kumpulan Cerita Pendek Kidung Penjaga Malam Karya Mim Yudiarto : Semiotic Analysis in the Short Story Collection Kidung Penjaga Malam by Mim Yudiarto

    Get PDF
This study aims to examine the latent structures of meaning embedded in the short story collection Kidung Penjaga Malam by Mim Yudiarto using a structural semiotic approach. The stories in this collection do not merely present horror or mystery narratives, but they also embed various symbols, myths, and local cultural elements that invite deeper interpretation. This research applies a qualitative descriptive method with a semiotic text analysis approach. The analysis focuses on the five semiotic codes originally proposed by Roland Barthes, updated through contemporary structural semiotic frameworks: hermeneutic (enigma), proairetic (action), semic (connotation), symbolic (binary opposition), and cultural (referential) codes. Data were obtained through close reading and note-taking of sign systems within the stories, which were then classified and interpreted through this theoretical lens. The results show that the narrative structures in these stories are constructed through layered and complex sign strategies. Elements such as birdsong, spiritual chants (kidung), mirrors, and character expression’s function both as atmospheric tools and as representations of the characters’ internal states. Furthermore, the characters\u27 actions are found to be not merely narrative drivers, but also carriers of moral and spiritual values rooted in local traditions. From a cultural perspective, the stories also reflect rituals, Javanese myths, and customary norms that remain relevant in contemporary society. The conclusion of this study affirms that Kidung Penjaga Malam is a literary work that succeeds aesthetically and semiotically in constructing rich narrative layers, while also reflecting the spiritual, social, and psychological anxieties of today’s society. The symbols and codes scattered throughout the stories not only enhance the mysterious atmosphere but also open space for critical readings that connect the text to broader cultural and ideological contexts

Authentic Assessment based on Teaching and Learning Trajectory: A Conceptual Model for Sustainable Assessment in Natural Science Learning

    Get PDF
The transformation of 21st-century education requires assessment systems that not only measure cognitive achievement but also foster deep and meaningful learning. Current practices, however, remain dominated by summative tests that emphasize memorization and fail to capture students’ holistic development. To address this gap, this article introduces the Authentic Assessment Based on Teaching and Learning Trajectory (AABTLT) as a conceptual model for sustainable assessment integrated into the learning process. AABTLT aligns learning objectives, instructional activities, and authentic assessment along structured learning trajectories, enabling teachers to monitor students’ progressive development through contextual and formative feedback. Developed through a comprehensive literature review and synthesis of studies on authentic assessment, learning trajectories, and deep learning, this model highlights the importance of assessment as a driver of learning rather than a terminal evaluation tool. The novelty of AABTLT lies in its integrative approach, combining authentic tasks, developmental indicators, and reflective practices to strengthen student engagement, critical thinking, and creativity. Its practical implications include clear guidelines for designing assessment instruments aligned with 21st-century skills and strategies for supporting teachers in formative evaluation. Future empirical research is recommended to validate the effectiveness of AABTLT in science education and interdisciplinary contexts

Prioritizing Urban Radiation Monitoring Using Background Radiation Levels and Population Density: A Bandung Case Study

    Get PDF
This study investigated background radiation in Bandung City by integrating field measurements with demographic data to establish monitoring priorities. Data were collected from 60 sampling points across ten densely populated districts, covering six land-use types: open areas, residential neighborhoods, offices, healthcare facilities, industrial or waste sites, and waterways. Radiation levels were measured using a handheld Geiger–Müller counter in counts per minute (CPM) and were analyzed using medians, quartiles, interquartile ranges (IQR), and 95th percentiles (P95). Differences among districts were tested with the Kruskal–Wallis method. The citywide baseline was determined at 21 CPM, with district medians ranging from 16.5 to 23.5 CPM. Although several districts showed slightly higher or lower values, statistical results (p ≈ 0.111) indicated that the variation was not significant. Wider IQR values in some districts reflected localized heterogeneity, while Districts I and E recorded the highest P95 values. To refine monitoring priorities, a Population-Weighted Index (PWI) was applied by combining radiation levels with population data. Districts E, A, and C were identified as priority areas because of their relatively higher CPM values, larger populations, or both. Overall, the findings suggested that while background radiation levels in Bandung remained within natural ranges, incorporating demographic factors into radiation assessments provided a more effective approach for prioritizing urban monitoring, managing potential risks, and supporting public health planning
