    Modelling of Curvature of the Railway Track Geometrical Layout Using Particle Swarm Optimization

    A method of railway track geometrical layout design, based on an application of cubic C-Bezier curves for describing the layout curvature is presented in the article. The control points of a cubic C-Bezier curve are obtained in an optimization process carried out using Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm. The optimization criteria are based on the evaluation of the dynamic interactions and satisfaction of geometrical design requirements

    Choice of Functional Form for Independent Variables in Accident Prediction Models

    The development of multivariate statistical models to identify factors that explain systematic variation in accident counts has been an active field of research in the past 20 years. During this period many different models and functional forms have been applied. This study, based on data for national roads in Norway, tests alternative functional forms of the relationship between independent variables and the number of injury accidents. The paper compares six different functional forms (sets of independent variables and specifications of the form of their relationship to accident occurrence) by means of Poisson-lognormal regression. The best model was identified in terms of five goodness of fit measures and a graphical method – the CURE plot (CURE = cumulative residuals). The coefficients estimated for the independent variables were found to vary according to functional form. It is therefore important to compare different functional forms as part of an exploratory analysis when developing accident prediction models

    In accordance with the report from 2013 of the Cruise Lines International Association Europe “the Baltic Sea is the largest segment in the Northern Europe market, generating capacity of around 4.85 million passenger nights in 2012 and around 5.14 million in 2013”. In the Baltic Sea region, carriage of passengers on cruise ships take 10,2% share of the EU market.For several years, it has begun to detect the role and importance of cruise ship tourism in the Baltic Sea Region, what is seen in a number of initiatives for international cooperation within the framewor k of the projects of the European Union, such as i.e.: Seaside Project or Enjoy South Baltic, and associations as: Baltic Sea Tourism Commission or Cruise Baltic Northern Europe. The European Commission also supports the activities for development of cruise ship industry, for example thanks to organization of annual celebrity of the European Maritime Day dedicated to maritime and coastal tourism development, or even for creation of the program entitled European Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region. However, in Poland, it has been registered a noticeable decline in the number of cruise ships calling at Polish seaports for several years. There are lots of reasons of this phenomenon, but the lack of the infrastructure of dedicated terminals to handle cruise ships is one of the most essential. Moreover, a range of services delivered at these ports have also a huge influence upon the development of the cruise ship tourism market. The objective of this article is to evaluate the state of infrastructure of the seaports in Poland to handle of cruise ships and also presentation of investment objectives planned by seaports authorities. A little space was also dedicated to present the tourist offers prepared for cruise passengers visiting Polish seaports. The article also shows the results of surveys made in: Port of Gdansk Authority, Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority and also Port of Gdynia Authority. In addition, the ongoing and planned investments, having an impact on raising attractiveness and competitiveness of the seaports in Poland on the cruise ship tourist market of the Baltic Sea, have also been analyzed

    The Analysis of the Collisions of Rail Vehicles with Animals with Regard to the Railway Traffic Safety

    Although animal-train collisions are common they are poorly recognised. They pose a threat to the passengers’ safety and also cause countable loss for railway operators in the form of rolling stock repairs and delays. The problem is much more significant in passenger transport due to the higher speed compared with cargo trains. The scale of damages caused by collisions also depends on the size of the animal and the type of locomotive. The analysis of collision sites and careful collection of data by all the railway operators would have a significant influence on railway transport safety and costs

    Planning and long-term programming are important instruments for adapting the largest seaports to the changes occurring in their external environment (particularly to the changes which result from the ongoing transformation processes in conjunction with the Polish economy, Poland's EU membership and influence of globalization processes). The analyses of seaports known to the author of this work have used components of the logic of 'problem tree' and 'goal tree' only to a limited extent. Performing a problem analysis (problem tree) and goal analysis (goal tree) with regard to the plans and development programmes for the largest Polish seaports would facilitate combining components of three key planes within the framework the ports can be examined, i.e.:• plane of economic and non-economic attributes of the seaports,• plane of economic functions they serve,• plane of seaport structures including their microstructures, mesostructures and macroeconomic structures

    THE STANCE LOGISTICS: An Attempt to Adapt Logistics Principles on Human and Inter-human Movement Behaviors

    The broad span of Logistics Management encompasses control of time, place, movement, energy (efforts, labor), as well as the positioning, stance and movement of products, materials, commodities, and people. This study coins the term Stance Logistics to focus on the stance and movement of people within the range of Logistics principles. The philosophy behind this is to enhance the required sensitivity with respect to management and control of time, place, movement, motion, stance and energy in material and nonmaterial exchanges and in all types of human encounters. Stance Logistics includes not only the “on foot” (pedestrian) or “in-vehicle” (automated) movements and public behaviour in stopping, standing, and positioning, but also individual predisposition of physical and mental response, and awareness (aesthesia). This essay describes the application of the scientific principles of Logistics to the personal experiences of people. Current Logistics literature includes mostly models developed on pedestrian and evacuation movement behaviour. To the author’s knowledge, however, there is nothing documented on the issue of personal individual Logistics Stance. Behaviours, especially that of blocking other people’s ways and passages, intervening, rudeness and queue-jumping in various environmental settings have not been extensively studied, if at all, whether during walking, pausing, stopping, face-to-face encounters, standing or waiting in lines and lanes or waiting for an elevator or metro train door to open. This study seeks underlying clues to increase sensitivity and awareness of people’s movement particularly in public areas by shedding light on Logistics behaviours of people. When combined with applicable models of pedestrian movements and integrated with the general principles of Logistics, Stance Logistics can serve as an important guide to facilitate the daily activities of many people. It is believed that, this exploratory study will pave the way for further research to produce promising results on the aspects of this new concept of Stance Logistic

    To the modern philosophy of logistic processes improvement belongs concept of Integrated Logistic Support (ILS) that was mostly developed in aircraft industry and other branches of production, and also at exploitation of Complicated Technical Systems (CTS). ILS originates from Computer Aided Acquisition and Logistic Support (CALS) initiative and it has importance of continual acquisition and products life cycle (LC) support in the present time. The main tool of ILS is Logistic Support Analysis (LSA). LSA utilizes synergetic effect of technical disciplines that use uniform special data base (DB LSA), with aim to shorten duration of technological processes, starting from research, continuing to project proposal, production, up to maintenance and complex Life Cycle Support (LCS) of CTS. In the aircraft engineering it enables to project and plan production and logistic support in real time, higher competitiveness, reengineering of company processes at research, production and working of high-tech products.
