Safety of Supply Chain of Kenya’s Cut Flower Industry. Case of Kongoni River Farm
The article examines a logistics chain of Kenya cut flower industry with special emphasis on safety and security issues. The robust growth in this sector of Kenyan economy, important for the EU market, is endangered both because of security problems resulting from Kenya’s domestic political situation, imported terrorism from neighbouring Somalia, and underdevelopment of Kenyan transportation network. The author shows how Kenyan flower farmers try to overcome those obstacles. The research is based on field visit to Kongoni River Farm in central Kenya
Identification of Risk Factors in Water Supply and Sewage Projects
An investment project as an undertaking for the future, more or less foreseeable, is a priori encumbered with the possibility of occurrence of disturbances. In recent years there have appeared significant changes in the scope of execution of construction projects, connected with the investment execution time, manner of financing, investors, and the environment in which the given project is executed. That fact determines the need, or even the necessity, to conduct the research into the issues of risk assessment and its utilitarian aspects. That problem applies also to construction projects, including water supply and sewage projects. An example of the project with all kinds of threats characteristic of such types of investments is the project entitled “Complex protection of the underground waters in the Kielce agglomeration.” The risk factors result from the complexity and specificity of that type of projects. The presented article is an introduction to the discussion on the issues of assessing the risk of execution of water supply and sewage projects. The intention of the authors was to present the specificity of that type of projects and the general identification of the risk factors accompanying them
Inflatable Life Raft Design for Operation – Novel Solutions
The paper presents the discussion of novel life raft designs. The existing solutions of life rafts available on the market have many drawbacks. In Polish industry, a company having the experience in production of life rafts is Stomil Grudziadz who are now on the way to start new production of modern life rafts. The design for operation has been proposed to introduce complex approach including life raft considered as an element of Search and Rescue System. The conclusions of the paper comprise the main problems which need to be solved in novel design of a life raft - stability in waves, reduction of non-linearity of aero dynamical coefficients, solution of safe and easy entrance to the life raft, increase of thermal protection of survivors, increase of range of detection using novel materials, based on the latest achievements in nanotechnology
A Concept of the Baltic Institute of Logistics as a Centre of Logistic Excellence Set up in Słupsk, Pomerania Province, Poland
Due to the insufficient critical mass of scientific expertise, and location between two the most developed centres of science in Pomerania, the Słupsk region has suffered from the lack of scientific coordination of its economic, social and cultural development. This paper, based on SWOT analysis prepared by authors, provides a comprehensive concept of a new scientific centre of excellence to be established in Słupsk. The Baltic Institute of Logistic headquartered in Słupsk (when established) will provide the necessary scientific expertise (think tank) and will play the coordinating role in assuring the growth and competitive position of the City of Słupsk and its entire region as well as contribute to the Intelligent Specialization Smart Port & City of the Pomerania Province (playing the role of the centre of logistics excellence)
The Effects of Globalisation on Logistics in Europe and in Hungary
Transportation is essential for the functioning of the economy since mobility greatly supports growth and job creation. The transport sector in the EU employs about 10 million people and provides approximately 5% of the GDP. The efficiency of the transport systems is a prerequisite for competitiveness and significantly affects the quality of life of people. Logistics plays a key role in terms of sustainable and competitive mobility in Europe and other objectives, such as a cleaner environment, security of energy supply, and widely available transport facilities. The use of safe and environmentally friendly vehicles is the main priority of all modes of transportation. The key changes include alternative fuels, new materials, new propulsion systems as well as information technology and traffic management techniques. The organization of the transportation of raw materials and finished products within and outside the EU depends on the efficient operation of logistic networks. This is primarily an industrial activity and creating the right framework conditions is the responsibility of the relevant authorities. In my study I analysed the situation of logistics in Europe and in Hungary. In order to exploit the benefits and to avoid the disadvantages of globalization the European Union implements structural changes which I describe and analyse. Considering the EU and Hungary this paper covers the following areas: − The effects of globalisation, − The climate-, energy-, and environment protection policy of the EU and their connection to logistics, − Tendencies in the changes of the transport sector, − The possible changes in passenger and freight transport, − The characteristics of the infrastructure and the requirements for its development, − Future prospects of logistics. On the basis of my examinations I will draw conclusions and offer suggestions regarding modifications in areas I consider most problematic
Identification of Changes in Irreguralities for a Modernized Railway Track
This article describes the analysis of measurements of track irregularities for a selected section of a modernized railway track. The paper presents changes of selected irregularities resulting from the traffic load levels on the track section. The authors focused on analysing results of track geometry measurements and analysing waves of track lateral and vertical irregularities. Measurements of track irregularities were performed at the same track section by indirect and direct methods
Pipeline Transportation of Goods
The article includes the concept of the "underground transport of materials in Europe". Europe is a very densely populated area and there are more and more such areas where people find jobs and better living conditions meeting their needs. Densely populated area requires a large amount of materials, energy, food, water, etc., which must be transported to these areas on a daily basis. Conversely, all the waste and the products of the activities of these areas must be transferred to other places. This gives rise to high demands for transport, the quantity of the transported material and the transport speed. This also results in creating a large space for storage, transshipment, railway stations, airports, etc. The only way to solve this traffic problem of the future is, according to the authors, the underground transport of materials between the densely populated areas. The solution to this problem is outlined in almost the whole extent of the problem from the choice of transport routes to organizing their operation. The aim of this project is to transport goods and materials; in no case do we discuss transport of people
Algorithm for the Transportation Network Nodes Aggregation Using Fuzzy Logic
In many situations, the model of the transportation network contains a very large number of nodes, so the algorithms operating on such a model may be too time-consuming. Therefore there is a need to simplify the model by reducing the number of nodes. The simplest approach using the physical neighbourhood of the nodes and then aggregation of nearby nodes may be insufficient, because it does not take into account the different roles played by the nodes subject to the merger. Some of them have local significance and can be aggregated without disturbing the traffic flows across the whole network. For other nodes traffic flows associated with geographically distant nodes can be much larger than the local flows. Nodes of this kind should not be aggregated with their neighbours. This paper presents an algorithm for grouping the transportation network nodes using fuzzy logic, which processes the qualitative characteristics of nodes
