The Sacredness and Performativity of Sarafal Anam in the Maulid Celebration: A Living Qur’an Study in Kaloy Village, Aceh Tamiang

    No full text
The Sarafal Anam tradition, performed during the Maulid celebration in Aceh Tamiang, reflects a culturally embedded practice through which Qur’anic values are enacted and transmitted. While often seen as a ceremonial event, this tradition offers deeper significance as a form of lived engagement with sacred texts, particularly within the framework of the Living Qur’an. This study adopts a qualitative descriptive approach, using field observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis to examine the embodiment of Qur’anic values in the Sarafal Anam tradition. The research was conducted in Kaloy Village, a community known for its consistent preservation of this practice. Thematic analysis was employed with the support of NVivo software to identify key patterns and values expressed through the tradition. Findings reveal that Sarafal Anam functions both as a religious ritual and an educational medium that transmits Qur’anic principles such as prophetic devotion, compassion, social solidarity, and moral responsibility. The practice integrates elements of local culture—regional language, traditional foods, and poetic forms—demonstrating how Islamic values adapt to and are sustained within specific cultural contexts. The tradition plays an important role in character development, especially among the youth, though recent trends show a decline in their active participation. The Sarafal Anam tradition exemplifies the Living Qur’an, offering a meaningful intersection between scripture and culture. To ensure its sustainability, the study recommends youth-centered revitalization efforts, digital adaptation, and institutional support. This research contributes to Qur’anic studies by highlighting how localized rituals serve as dynamic sites for ethical education and cultural continuity in the modern Muslim world

A Study of Nusantara Arba‘īn Hadith Literature: Genealogy, Characteristics, and the Dynamics of Its Composition

    No full text
Historical evidence shows that Hadith literature in the Nusantara experienced a revival and golden age in the 20th century, marked by the emergence of arba‘īn-style compilations. This article aims to investigate the genealogy of the structure and themes found in these arba‘īn works. Employing historical and content analysis methods, the study follows three key stages: data reduction, display, and interpretation. The analysis was supported by the ATLAS.ti application as an analytical tool. The findings reveal that during the 20th century, three notable arba‘īn-style works emerged: at-Tarmasī’s collection of 22 Tṡulāṡiyyāt al-Bukhārī hadiths; Hāsyim Asy‘arī’s compilation, intended as ethical and devotional guidance for members of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU); and al-Fadānī’s compilation of 40 hadiths sourced from 40 different books and scholars. These works laid the foundational model for arba‘īn-style hadith writing in the Nusantara. The thematic focuses of the texts also vary: at-Tarmasī emphasizes the virtues of religious practices, Hāsyim Asy‘arī highlights the Prophet Muhammad’s moral teachings, and al-Fadānī concentrates on Islamic legal principles governing human relations with God and all living beings

A Hadith-Based Love Curriculum in Islamic Education: An Initiative by Indonesia’s Ministry of Religious Affairs

    No full text
This study examines the concept of the “Love-based Curriculum” initiated by the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia through the perspective of the prophetic hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The research focuses on identifying, classifying, and analyzing hadiths that represent the values of love for God (ḥablum minallāh), love for fellow human beings (ḥablum minannās), love for the environment, and love for the homeland. Employing a qualitative approach through a library-based study, this research applies the method of takhrīj al-ḥadīth, followed by sanad and matan criticism to assess the authenticity of the hadiths utilized. This study is conducted to address the existing gap in the development of Islamic education curricula that explicitly draw upon prophetic traditions as primary sources of educational values. The findings reveal that out of 54 identified hadith, the majority are classified as ṣaḥīḥ (authentic) and are appropriate to serve as normative foundations for formulating a value-based curriculum centered on love. These traditions demonstrate a strong correlation with the values of tolerance, empathy, ecological responsibility, and national spirit. The results underscore the urgency of integrating prophetic teachings into the design of an Islamic education curriculum that is more holistic, transformative, and humanistic. A hadith-based Love Curriculum holds substantial potential in shaping a learning ecosystem that not only fosters intellectual excellence but also cultivates moral integrity, strengthens social harmony, and promotes the development of a robust national character

Feedback as a tool for academic independence: A study on EFL students’ research project writing at NUBTK

    No full text
This study investigates feedback as a scaffolded, mediational process within the framework of Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Theory (SCT), examining its role in the research writing development of EFL students at the Northern University of Business and Technology Khulna (NUBTK). A cross-sectional survey was administered to 30 students who had completed EFL research projects in 2024, utilizing a 15-item online questionnaire. Descriptive analysis of the data reveals that feedback serves a dual mediational function: it scaffolds both structural coherence and linguistic accuracy while simultaneously facilitating the internalization of complex academic concepts, thereby fostering critical thinking and argumentation skills consistent with SCT's concept of guided cognitive challenge. The findings further indicate that verbal feedback is perceived as the most effective modality for synchronous, interactive mediation, whereas written feedback demonstrates greater variability in its perceived impact. Feedback also functions as a significant motivational and affective catalyst, bolstering student confidence and supporting their progression toward autonomous academic writing. The timeliness and individualization of feedback were identified as critical moderators of its perceived effectiveness. While this study offers insights into student perceptions, its generalizability is constrained by the cross-sectional design, reliance on self-reported data, and single-institution sample. The implications suggest the need for a balanced, multi-modal feedback regimen—integrating verbal, written, and technology-mediated approaches—aligned with SCT principles of scaffolding and gradual internalization. Future research should employ longitudinal designs and incorporate triangulated data from feedback providers to develop a more comprehensive understanding and to inform effective pedagogical policies and practices

    No full text
This study was motivated by low levels of student engagement in English language learning within Pesantren-based (Islamic boarding school) educational settings, a context often characterized by conventional pedagogy and a scarcity of interactive instructional media. The research aimed to analyze the efficacy of Canva Talk Up media as a tool for enhancing engagement among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students in this specific environment. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, the study involved one English teacher and four tenth-grade students at a Pesantren in East Java. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews, non-participant classroom observations, and document analysis, and subsequently analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that the implementation of Canva Talk Up media significantly increased student engagement. This was facilitated by its visually compelling design, interactive features, and provision of an enjoyable platform for language practice. Concurrently, the teacher demonstrated enhanced proficiency in integrating technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge (TPACK). The study concludes that Canva Talk Up is an effective pedagogical tool for fostering student participation in this context, notwithstanding persistent challenges such as limited internet connectivity and device availability. The implications highlight the necessity for targeted teacher professional development and improved institutional investment in technological infrastructure to optimize the integration of digital learning media within Pesantren-based schools.

Evaluating assessment practices in English programs: A study at Islamic higher education

    No full text
This study examines the landscape of language assessment approaches within undergraduate English Education programs at Islamic higher education institutions. Employing a descriptive qualitative methodology grounded in a systematic literature-based analysis, the research outlines predominant trends, persistent challenges, and emergent opportunities in contemporary assessment practices. The findings indicate a continued dominance of traditional, summative assessment models, which persists despite national policy initiatives advocating for a paradigm shift toward formative, authentic, and technology-enhanced evaluation. Significant impediments to the adoption of these innovative approaches are identified, encompassing limited instructor assessment literacy, insufficient institutional support structures, and inadequate technological infrastructure. Conversely, the analysis notes a growing recognition of the potential inherent in digital assessment tools to transform pedagogical evaluation. In conclusion, the study proposes strategic recommendations, including targeted professional development for educators, systematic curricular reform, and the strategic integration of educational technology. These measures are suggested as essential for aligning assessment frameworks with the principles of communicative language teaching and the exigencies of 21st-century education. The implications of this research emphasize the necessity for systemic, context-sensitive reform to develop assessment models that more effectively foster language acquisition in the unique milieu of Islamic higher education

ANTROPOLOGI PENDIDIKAN ISLAM DALAM ERA DIGITAL: MENGKAJI PERUBAHAN PARADIGMA DAN PRAKTIK PEMBELAJARAN KONTEMPORER

    No full text
The digital era has shifted traditional values in Islamic education, creating tension between preserving Islamic teachings and adapting to technology, while also reducing social and spiritual interaction in online learning. Meanwhile, anthropological studies on the Muslim community’s responses to this phenomenon remain limited. This study aims to describe and analyze the anthropology of Islamic education in the digital era by examining paradigm shifts and contemporary learning practices. This research employs a library research method, relying on written sources such as books, scholarly journal articles, and research reports as the primary data sources. The findings reveal that: First, the Paradigm Shift in Islamic Education in the Digital Era has moved from face-to-face, teacher-centered learning to flexible, student-centered learning. The main challenge lies in maintaining Islamic values while integrating technology. Second, Contemporary Learning Practices in Islamic Education take the form of e-learning, blended learning, and flipped classrooms, which are becoming increasingly popular. However, online learning often reduces social and spiritual interactions, requiring educators to balance technology with Islamic values. Third, the Response of Muslim Communities to Digital Transformation in Islamic Education varies; urban communities tend to be more open to technology, while rural communities are more inclined to maintain traditional values. Based on these findings, Islamic educational institutions need to adapt by developing Islamic-based learning platforms and providing technology training for educators. Integrating technology with Islamic values through models such as e-learning is essential. Educators must be trained to enhance their technological competence, while the government and educational institutions should ensure equitable access to adequate digital infrastructure.
