Ecological Spirituality Catechesis Based on Shared Christian Praxis for Catholic Youth in Southeast Aceh
Faced with the deforestation crisis in Southeast Aceh, with the rate of forest loss reaching ±5,000 hectares/year based on KLHK data in 2024, and the phenomenon of ecological faith dissociation among Catholic Youth (OMK), this research develops an ecological catechesis model based on Shared Christian Praxis (SCP). This model is designed to transform OMK into agents of environmental conservation while overcoming the limitations of conventional catechesis, which is monologic and abstract. By applying Martin Heidegger's (1962) hermeneutic phenomenological method, data were collected through in-depth interviews (31 OMK and 14 community and church leaders), participatory observation of ecological catechesis and reforestation activities, and document study in Southeast Aceh (April-June 2025). The findings prove that (1) the SCP model succeeded in increasing the ecological awareness of 72% of OMK participants through spiritual transformation that interpreted “planting trees as a liturgy of life”; (2) the integration of Laudato Si' teachings with the local wisdom of Adat bak Poe Teumeureuhom strengthened context-based ecological identity; and (3) real action commitments were manifested in reforestation participation (80%) and reduction of single-use plastics (65%). Key recommendations include the adoption of an integrated catechesis module, the church and government, and advocacy for an “ecological refugee” policy based on the Vatican document (POCDP). Theologically, this research affirms the ecological crisis as a path of holiness while making a significant contribution to the development of practical theology, particularly in building a participatory, contextual, and action-oriented ecological catechesis paradigm as a manifestation of authentic faith
Reinterpreting Democracy and Pluralism: Nurcholish Madjid’s Intellectual Legacy and Its Relevance for Contemporary Indonesia
This article examines the contemporary relevance of Nurcholish Madjid’s thought on democracy and pluralism in Indonesia. Through a qualitative literature review guided by Miles and Huberman’s analytical framework, the study synthesizes Madjid’s intellectual formation, core democratic principles, and his nuanced approach to the relationship between Islam and the state. The findings highlight Madjid’s persistent insistence that democracy is not a finished project but an ongoing, adaptive process—one that demands ethical substance, critical participation, and continuous negotiation between religious values and civic institutions. By comparing Madjid’s ideas to those of prominent Muslim thinkers such as Yusuf al-Qaradawi, Abdullahi An-Na’im, Khaled Abou El Fadl, and Asef Bayat, the article situates his contribution within both Indonesian and broader Islamic discourses. Madjid’s advocacy for substantive democracy and active pluralism is shown to be deeply rooted in both his personal experience and his reading of Indonesia’s diverse society. The analysis demonstrates that, in the face of growing populism, the instrumentalization of religious identity, and persistent challenges to civil rights, Madjid’s vision remains urgently relevant. Rather than offering a static blueprint, Madjid’s legacy is framed as a provocation to rethink and revitalize democracy as an open, unfinished process. His call for loyal opposition, civil courage, and social learning is presented as both a challenge and a guide for Indonesia’s ongoing democratic experiment. The article concludes that Madjid’s ideas offer not easy answers, but a critical lens and a moral discipline for navigating the dilemmas of democracy, pluralism, and national identity in Indonesia today
The Dialectical Relationship between Religious Moderation and Islam Nusantara in Indonesia
The concepts of religious moderation and Islam Nusantara serve as fundamental pillars in the discourse of Indonesian Islam, both promoting values of tolerance, peace, and openness. Although frequently associated, their interplay has rarely been examined through a dialectical lens that highlights both their tensions and convergences. This study fills this gap by critically analyzing the discursive intersections and ideological frictions between these two concepts. Using a qualitative descriptive method based on extensive literature review, the article explores normative perspectives alongside critical debates within public and academic spheres. Findings reveal significant common ground in the contextualized Islamic praxis embodied by Islam Nusantara, yet misunderstandings persist due to low ideological literacy and politicization of religious narratives. The study positions Islam Nusantara as a localized manifestation of religious moderation capable of bridging religious and national identities. It contributes theoretically by broadening understanding of moderate Islam rooted in local culture and offers practical implications for strengthening inclusive, context-aware Islamic narratives that can counter ideological polarization and foster social cohesion in Indonesia

POPULAR KYAI AND NEW AUTHORITIES: A CASE STUDY OF KYAI ABDULLAH SAM
Kyai play a considerably essential role in the life of Indonesian Muslim population, not only related to religious matters, but also pertaining to social, cultural, economic, and political aspects. This central position is highly correlated with the distinctive authority possessed by a kyai. Religious authority is dynamic and serves as a complex field of contestation. There has been an increasingly competitive contestation of religious authority, involving individuals and organizations subsequent to the fall of the New Order, which widely opens the room of democracy and leads to unrestricted political contestation for anyone to gain new authority. This article aims to delineate the road to fame of Kyai Abdullah Sam, as one of the most influential figures of kyai, and his strategy in building authority. This research was conducted using qualitative and a phenomenological approach. The data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation to be further analyzed according to the method developed by Miles and Huberman. It was revealed that Kyai Abdullah Sam gained popularity through various social activities and intensive use of social media. Apart from the fact that Kyai Abdullah Sam neither inherits the “royal blood” of eminent kyai and is neither supported with adequate social capital, he has managed to establish strong religious authority in traditional Muslim societies by building distinctive pesantren, empowering the surrounding community through his da’wah (proselytizing), and making the best use of arts and cultural channels, social media, friendship, and scientific forums at various universities as the platform for promoting the self. This paper contributes to the development of a new perspective on traditional religious authority
A MODEL FOR TEACHING ISLAMIC CHARACTER TO STUDENTS DURING THE PANDEMIC: CASE STUDY ON MA’HAD AL-JAMI’AH IN THREE PTKIN
This study seeks to identify the obstacles and impediments to the management of Ma'had in the establishment of the Islamic character of students at three state Islamic universities, namely UIN Ar-Raniry, UIN Sunan Gunung Jati, and UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim University, which were implemented during COVID-19. In addition to outlining the method of implementing the program, which has an impact on not optimally attaining the goal, the proposed curriculum should achieve the Ma'had's objectives. This study employed the case study method by collecting data through documentation and in-depth interviews with the Ma'had's directors, teachers, and resident assistants. The important results are: 1) Obstacles include students not attending the Ma'had program in person; internet problems due to distance and other circumstances; not fully understanding the purpose of establishing the Ma'had by all students; and differences in the response to the pandemic by each Ma'had director. 2) The implementation of the program used virtual lessons, social media, virtual competitions and presentations, and online assessments 3) The proposed curriculum design consists of a). aspects of educational materials that integrate and interrelate between subjects of faith, jurisprudence, and morals and are packed with contextual principles that are moderate, fun, easy to understand, applicable, and based on strong logical and textual arguments; b). aspects of conducting the educational process that implement the principles of exemplary, sustainable, tadabbur and muhasabah (Taksis & Tamhas); c). aspects of assessment consist of cognitive tests, attitude observation, skills tests, and program evaluation
Compliments styles across gender in artists’ Instagram comments: A study of language and emoji usage
Language serves a pivotal role in social interaction, including the performance of compliments as a key speech act for building rapport. This study conducts a sociolinguistic analysis of gendered differences in language style and emoji use within compliment exchanges on Instagram. Employing a descriptive qualitative methodology, the research utilizes a documentation approach to collect a corpus of 160 comments, evenly sampled from male and female users. These comments were extracted from ten Hollywood celebrity Instagram accounts (specifically, actors known for superhero film roles, each with over 10 million followers). Guided by Tannen’s (1990) Genderlect Style Theory, the analysis reveals significant gendered patterns. In same-gender interactions, men predominantly employ a “report talk” style, characterized by informative and referential language, whereas women favor “rapport talk,” which is more affiliative and collaborative. However, in cross-gender interactions, both genders demonstrate stylistic flexibility, utilizing a more balanced mix of report and rapport talk. Regarding paralinguistic features, male users show a greater tendency toward evaluative emojis, while female users more frequently employ expressive emojis. In terms of compliment topics, aligned with Holmes’s (1986) taxonomy, both men and women directed compliments across all major categories: appearance, ability/performance, possessions, and personality/friendship, indicating a shared thematic repertoire despite stylistic divergence

The Relationship Between Conflict Risk of Sumatran Tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) and Vegetation Density in The Leuser Ecosystem Area of South Aceh District
Abstract: Sumatran tigers (Panthera tigris sumatrae) in the Leuser Ecosystem of South Aceh rely heavily on dense and diverse vegetation for food and protection. However, vegetation degradation due to deforestation and land conversion has pushed tigers out of their natural habitat, increasing the risk of conflict with humans which threatens the species' survival. This study aims to analyze the relationship between tiger conflict risk and vegetation density using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). The research method combines a Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) approach and satellite image-based spatial analysis (Landsat 8/9 or Sentinel) to calculate NDVI, while conflict data was collected through SMART patrols in 13 villages and mapped with ArcGIS. The results show that the Sumatran tiger conflict risk is spatially distributed with a significant level of variation in the study area. High risk dominates with a percentage of 61.5%, mainly concentrated in five sub-districts: Trumon Tengah, Trumon Timur, Tapak Tuan, Kluet Tengah, and Meukek. Meanwhile, moderate risk (23.1%) was identified in Bakongan Timur and Trumon Tengah, and low risk (15.4%) was only found in Bakongan Timur. There is a striking pattern between vegetation density and conflict frequency, with low vegetation areas such as Bakongan Timur (7 cases) and Trumon Tengah (6 cases) recording the highest number of conflicts. In contrast, sub-districts with high vegetation cover such as Meukek, Tapaktuan, and Central Kluet recorded only one case each. These findings strongly indicate that habitat degradation, indicated by low NDVI values, is the main factor driving the increase in negative tiger-human interactions in the region.
Identification of The Driving Factors Behind The Transformation of The Landscape in Sabang, Aceh, Indonesia, Based on Local Perception
Abstract: Information on land use changes and land cover change studies to understand the dynamics of landscape change is very useful for planning sustainable landscape management. Changes to the landscape not only have an impact on people's welfare but also on the way people view and use the landscape. Land-based investments have implications for spatial development and influence landscape dynamics. Cities continue to experience growth, including cities on small islands. The city of Sabang, whose territory is small islands in Aceh Province, Indonesia, is experiencing an increase in local population, immigration, and government policy encouragement to improve the economy. It is worth paying attention to knowing the dynamics of landscape change and the driving factors based on local perceptions. It is important to understand the patterns of land use and land cover changes from 2013 to 2021, as well as the driving factors based on local community perceptions that may influence future spatial planning and land utilization in Sabang City.
