The Implementation of the Fun School Movement (GSM) in Moral Education at MI Soebono Mantofani, Tangerang
This study examines the implementation of the Fun School Movement (Gerakan Sekolah Menyenangkan/GSM) in moral education at MI Soebono Mantofani, South Tangerang. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected through classroom and school-environment observations, semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders (school leaders, teachers, students, and parents), and document analysis. The findings indicate that GSM is implemented as a school-wide cultural orientation emphasizing emotional safety, student participation, and supportive learning routines. A central operational feature is the use of thematic classroom zones that function as routine reference points to structure interaction and reinforce moral habituation. The Emotional Zone supports attention to students’ readiness before learning, while Attendance and Aspiration Zones reinforce discipline routines and future orientation; the Goodness Zone provides moral reminders linked to everyday behavior. Teachers and parents perceived moral education as integrated into daily practice through habituation, teacher modeling, and value consistency across school and home contexts. The study suggests that GSM supports moral education by translating values into visible and repeated classroom routines, sustained through leadership commitment and parental involvement.
Assessing Judges’ Considerations of Urgent Grounds in Marriage Dispensation Decisions: A Case Study of the Jantho Sharia Court, Aceh, Indonesia
Marriage Dispensation is a permit granted by the court to prospective brides or grooms who have not yet reached the age of 19 to enter into marriage. Consideration of the minimum age of marriage is a highly crucial matter, particularly to ensure a child’s growth and development, readiness to assume marital responsibilities, psychological pressure, disruption of education, and potential health problems arising from physical immaturity for engaging in sexual relations, as well as various other relevant factors. This study focuses on the considerations of judges at the Jantho Sharia Court in Case Number 97/Pdt.P/2023/MS.Jth, which granted a marriage dispensation to a prospective groom aged 17 years to marry a prospective bride aged 32 years, with the status of a divorced widow. Data were obtained through a documentary study of the judicial decision using a conceptual analysis approach. The findings indicate that, in examining the child involved in the application for marriage dispensation, the judges applied Supreme Court Regulation (PERMA) Number 5 of 2019. In granting the application, the judges considered the existence of very urgent grounds as stipulated in Article 7 paragraph (2) of Law Number 16 of 2019, with reference to the principle of the best interests of the child, as well as the potential negative and positive impacts of the marriage. The judges also heard the child’s testimony during the hearing, identified the child’s desire to marry, and assessed the child’s mental and physical readiness
Constructing Gender Authority in Modern Islam: A Sociology of Knowledge Analysis of Yusuf al-Qaradhawi and Nazaruddin Umar on Women’s Political Participation
This study examines how religious authority shapes gender discourse in contemporary Muslim society through a comparative analysis of Yusuf Al-Qaradhawi and Nazaruddin Umar's thoughts on women's political participation. Using a sociology of knowledge framework integrated with Bourdieu's field theory and Giddens' structuration theory, this study answers three questions: how is epistemic authority built in different field positions, how do socio-religious structures shape intellectual production, and do different approaches contribute to the transformation of gender discourse? The analysis reveals three main findings. First, both scholars successfully established credible positions that enabled women's eligibility to run for president through contrasting strategies: Al-Qaradhawi accumulated orthodox reformist capital in the field of transnational scholars, enabling broad acceptance while setting conditions (Islamic dress, family priorities, husband's permission); Umar developed a comprehensive gender hermeneutics at the boundaries of academia and government, enabling unconditional participation based solely on competence. Second, field positions tangibly shape interpretive possibilities; Al-Qaradhawi's ulama habitus produces incremental modifications, while Umar's academic-modern habitus enables radical hermeneutic interventions, yet both demonstrate reflective agency in negotiating patriarchal structures. Third, both approaches contribute complementarily but incompletely to transformation: Al-Qaradhawi achieves broader acceptance through moderate reformism; Umar offers a stronger theological foundation through the principle of equality. Both maintain skepticism toward classical caliphate, indicating uneven transformation across institutional domains. The integration of Bourdieusian and Giddensian frameworks explains how discourse operates simultaneously as a mechanism of structural reproduction and a site of transformative possibility. This study concludes that religious knowledge functions as a socially embedded practice, facilitating partial rather than total transformation of patriarchal structures
Batee Sumpah: A Symbol of Sacredness and Its Influence on the Seunebok Padang Community, Teunom, Aceh Jaya
The Oath Stone in Seunebok Padang Village, Teunom District, Aceh Jaya, serves as a sacred symbol representing the values of honesty, responsibility, and social balance within the community. This stone functions as a medium for solemn oaths aimed at fostering harmony and strengthening communal unity in peacefully resolving conflicts. However, with the advancement of time and the influence of modernization, the meaning and relevance of this tradition have begun to be questioned, particularly by the younger generation. This study aims to explore how the people of Seunebok Padang perceive the sacredness of the Oath Stone, including its spiritual and symbolic values, as well as the social impact of the associated rituals. A qualitative research methodology with a descriptive approach was employed, incorporating direct observations, in-depth interviews with traditional leaders and religious figures, and documentation of related traditions. The findings reveal that the community interprets the Oath Stone as a moral symbol that emphasizes honesty, responsibility, and the importance of maintaining harmony and justice. The social impact of this ritual is reflected in the preservation of social cohesion and the peaceful resolution of disputes. The continued sanctity of the Oath Stone is upheld as an effort to preserve cultural heritage, which embodies noble values, serves as a guide for life, and reinforces the collective identity of the community
Shared Christian Praxis Catechesis as a Catalyst for Strengthening Relationships in the Post-Marriage Period of 0–10 Years
This study aims to identify the challenges faced by Catholic couples in building marital relationships in the early years (0–10) and formulate a new catechetical model based on “Shared Christian Praxis” (SCP) to strengthen couples' love relationships. How can catechesis transition from a limited preparation model to a sustainable accompaniment model that is responsive to the specific challenges of young couples? The method used was a hermeneutic phenomenological approach, with in-depth interviews with 17 Catholic couples in Santo Damian Lau Baleng Parish, Archdiocese of Medan, as well as participatory observation and documentation study. The findings show that couples face various challenges, including economic problems, poor communication, and a lack of pastoral assistance from the Church. Despite this, couples show good resilience skills by integrating spiritual and practical aspects into their daily lives. High expectations for the Church's role in sustainable mentoring were expressed by informants, who wanted a more systematic and relevant program. This study recommends the development of a holistic and sustainable mentoring program, as well as the establishment of a community support network to assist young Catholic couples in facing the challenges of marriage. Thus, SCP-based catechesis is expected to bridge the gap between the Church's teachings and the experiences of young Catholic couple
Reconciling Liberalism and Islamic Educational Values in Indonesia
The encounter between liberalism and Islamic education creates a complex set of challenges and opportunities, particularly regarding the authority of revelation, the role of scholars, and the spiritual orientation of Islamic pedagogy. This article critically analyzes the historical evolution and foundational principles of liberalism, examining their implications for global education and their specific tensions within the context of Islamic educational frameworks. Drawing on a literature-based methodology with historical and philosophical approaches, the study explores how reformist figures and institutions in Indonesia have developed adaptive, integrative models that selectively incorporate liberal values, such as critical thinking, rational inquiry, and curricular flexibility, while steadfastly preserving core Islamic beliefs and communal identity. The findings reveal that a critically reflective and value-based engagement with liberalism can enrich Islamic education and enhance its relevance, provided it is guided by strong spiritual foundations and ethical discipline. The study offers important implications for curriculum design, educational policy, and future empirical research aimed at sustaining the integrity and adaptability of Islamic education in a globalized world
Qur’anic Perspectives on Mustadh‘afin: Gendered Oppression and Women’s Empowerment in Contemporary Indonesia
This article investigates the forms of mustadh‘afin (systemic oppression) experienced by women, as reflected in selected Qur’anic verses, and analyzes their relevance to the realities of contemporary Indonesian society. Filling a gap in previous scholarship, which often separates gender analysis from Qur’anic interpretation, this study adopts a gender-aware thematic approach (tafsir maudhu‘i) and draws on both classical and contemporary exegesis, including Al-Kassyaf, Tafsir Ibn Kathir, Al-Maraghi, and Al-Misbah. The analysis focuses on QS. An-Nisa [4]: 75, 97, 98; QS. Al-Anfal [8]: 26; and QS. Al-Qashash [28]: 4–5, all of which frame mustadh‘afin as a condition produced by structural marginalization, limited access to rights, and deep-seated gender stereotypes. In present-day Indonesia, such patterns of isti‘dhaf manifest through educational inequality, the dual burden of domestic and public responsibilities, victim blaming, and the commodification of women’s bodies. The study proposes empowerment strategies based on Qur’anic principles, including spiritual and social hijrah, gender literacy, and inclusive reinterpretation of both texts and policy. By integrating gender-sensitive exegesis with the lived experiences of Indonesian women, this article offers a new framework for Qur’anic gender discourse and supports structural transformation rooted in Islamic justice
The Role of Religious Moderation in Strengthening the Link Between Local Wisdom and Sustainable Development Goals
This study aims to explore the role of religious moderation as a moderator in the relationship between local wisdom and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Indonesia. Local wisdom is a foundation of values that support social harmony, environmental sustainability, and economic sustainability, but its implementation often faces challenges in plural societies. Religious moderation, which emphasises tolerance, balance and the rejection of extremism, is considered a solution to maintaining social stability and enhancing the connectivity of local values with sustainable development. While there have been many studies on local wisdom and SDGs, there is a lack of studies linking religious moderation as a moderator variable. Using a quantitative approach, this study measures the effect of local wisdom on the achievement of SDGs and examines the moderating role of religion in strengthening the relationship. PLS-SEM analysis shows interesting results regarding the influence of local wisdom, religious moderation, and the achievement of sustainable development goals. The significant path coefficient indicates a strong relationship between local wisdom with religious moderation as a moderator. This finding supports the hypothesis that the higher the level of local wisdom in a community, the stronger the role of religious moderation in mediating the relationship with other variables. However, the analysis also shows an interesting negative relationship between religious moderation and sustainable development. This indicates that an increase in sustainable development is not always directly proportional to an increase in religious moderation
The Intellectual Controversy Between Abraham Geiger and Al-Ghazali in Interpreting Islam
The differences in thought between Abraham Geiger and Al-Ghazali in understanding Islam reflect two contrasting approaches to the Qur’an and the influence of tradition in religious education. This study aims to analyze how their intellectual perspectives have shaped theological development within their respective traditions and their impact on the broader study of religion. The research employs a qualitative method, focusing on an in-depth analysis of Geiger’s and Al-Ghazali’s works, alongside a comprehensive literature review to contextualize the historical and philosophical dimensions of their arguments. The findings indicate that Geiger, through his historical-critical approach, presents a more flexible interpretation of sacred texts, whereas Al-Ghazali upholds the authority and wisdom of the Qur’an as the primary foundation of Islamic knowledge. This intellectual discourse highlights the tension between rationalism and traditionalism in Islamic studies while illustrating the dynamic interplay between radicalism and religiosity within the Muslim world. Furthermore, this controversy underscores internal debates across various religious traditions and offers valuable insights into how interfaith dialogue can enhance the understanding of Islam and spirituality in the modern era. Ultimately, this study aims to contribute to a broader academic discourse on the interaction between religious tradition and critical thought in a global context
