Harmonizing law and faith: The validity of female instrumentaire witnesses in notarial deeds and the principle of gender justice
The issue of female instrumentary witnesses in notarial deeds is significant due to differing perspectives between Indonesian positive law and Islamic law. The Notary Office Act (UUJN) does not differentiate witnesses based on gender, as long as they are adults, legally competent, and independent. In contrast, some classical Islamic views consider women’s testimony in muamalah matters to be worth half that of men, as stated in Surah Al-Baqarah verse 282. This raises questions regarding the validity of notarial deeds involving female instrumentary witnesses. This study employs a normative juridical method with a conceptual approach through library research, including UUJN, the Qur’an, classical exegesis, and academic literature. The analysis is qualitative with deductive reasoning, comparing positive legal norms and Islamic law, while also interpreting their relevance through the principle of maqashid al-shari‘ah. The findings show that under Indonesian positive law, a notarial deed remains valid even with female witnesses, since the key requirement lies in legal competence rather than gender. Meanwhile, classical Islamic law restricts women’s testimony, but contemporary interpretations grounded in maqashid al-shari‘ah emphasize justice and equality, thereby granting women equal standing in giving testimony. In conclusion, the use of female instrumentary witnesses in notarial deeds does not contradict Indonesian positive law or contemporary Islamic legal principles. This study highlights the importance of harmonizing national law and Islamic law so that Indonesia’s legal system can be more responsive to justice and gender equality values
The algorithm's gaze: Gender, age, and the structuring of TikTok content consumption patterns in urban Indonesia (A case study in Surabaya)
TikTok was one of the fastest-growing social media platforms in Indonesia, particularly among Gen Z and millennials. This article aimed to analyze the role of the TikTok algorithm in shaping content consumption patterns based on gender and age. The study employed a qualitative approach using two main techniques. First, content analysis was conducted on 200 popular videos appearing on the For You Page to identify thematic tendencies. Second, in-depth interviews were carried out with 30 active users in Surabaya (15 women and 15 men), selected purposively based on the intensity of their usage and the diversity of their backgrounds. These findings were complemented with data from two audiences’ insight platforms revealing fluctuating gender distribution among TikTok users in Indonesia. At certain periods, women dominated the user base, while at other times, men accounted for a higher percentage. This dynamic indicated that the TikTok algorithm was responsive not only to individual preferences but also to demographic shifts. The results showed that women were more likely to consume lifestyle, beauty, and aesthetic-related content, whereas men more frequently engaged with humor, sports, and technology. The novelty of this study lay in the finding that Gen Z demonstrated flexibility in crossing gender stereotypes; for instance, women actively engaged with technology content, while men were interested in beauty-related content. Thus, the TikTok algorithm functioned both to reinforce gender- and age-based preferences and to provide space for identity negotiation within the digital cultural sphere. This study contributed to gender, technology, and social media studies in Indonesia

The Calendar Systems of Sulawesi Ethnic Groups from the Perspective of Falak Science
The calendar systems of the ethnic groups in Sulawesi highlight a gap in understanding regarding the extent to which these traditional systems align with, differ from, or complement contemporary astronomical and Islamic time-keeping practices. Despite these communities’ rich, culturally embedded knowledge of time-division based on celestial movements, there has been minimal research on how these indigenous systems engage with scientific astronomy or are shaped by religious influences. Furthermore, there is a lack of comparative studies examining how each community’s calendar system reflects their unique cultural identities, cosmologies, and adaptations to environmental changes. This study examines the calendar systems of popular Sulawesi ethnic groups which are the Bugis, Mandar, and Toraja through the lens of falak science. This study employs a qualitative approach, utilizing document analysis, interviews, and observations as its primary methods. The findings indicate that these Sulawesi ethnic groups hold a rich repository of traditional knowledge on calendar systems, which aligns closely with foundational astronomical principles. Addressing these gaps could deepen insights into the preservation of cultural heritage and the potential integration of traditional knowledge with contemporary scientific and religious calendar practices

Optimizing Marriage Law through Acehnese Customs: A Qur’anic Perspective
This study aims to examine how Acehnese marriage customs play a role in optimizing the implementation of Islamic law by making the Qur'an the main analytical tool. Aceh, as a special region that implements Islamic law, has strong local traditions, especially in marriage practices. However, the interaction between customs and sharia is often understood partially, without a normative review based on revelation. This study uses a qualitative method with a literature study approach and thematic interpretation (maudhū‘ī) of relevant verses of the Qur'an. The results of the study show that traditions such as jak ba ranup (proposal), peuneuwoe (dowry), and khanduri (walimah) functionally support sharia values, such as maintaining kinship, affirming the rights and obligations of husband and wife, and maintaining family honor. These customs can be accepted as a form of 'urf ṣaḥīḥ as long as they do not conflict with the nash sharia. This study concludes that the integration between custom and sharia is a reflection of the flexibility of Islam in responding to local culture and is an effective strategy for implementing maqāṣid al-syarī‘ah in marriage practices. This finding provides an important contribution to the development of cultural fiqh and the strengthening of Islamic values in a multicultural society
Taujih al-Qiraat and Its Hermeneutical Implications in Surah Yunus
This study examines the phenomenon of taujih al-qiraat and its hermeneutical implications in Surah Yunus, focusing on how variations among the ten canonical Qur'anic readings generate layers of linguistic and theological meaning. It identifies forty-one loci of farsh al-huruf and verifies them through four parameters: rasm (orthographic framework), dabt (diacritical precision), lughawi (lexical plausibility), and nahwi/sarfi (grammatical and morphological validity). The research adopts a descriptive-analytical method integrating classical philology with modern linguistic verification to establish a transparent and replicable model of analysis. The results show that the variants in Surah Yunus function as a structured system of semantic plurality rather than random recitational differences. Ten representative loci reveal that phonetic variations preserve the rhythm of recitation, minor semantic variations influence rhetorical emphasis, and major semantic variations shape theological interpretation. These findings confirm that taujih al-qiraat serves as both a linguistic and hermeneutical framework linking structure and meaning in the Qur'an. The study concludes that the diversity of readings in Surah Yunus reflects divine intentionality within the boundaries of the Arabic language. By aligning classical verification with contemporary analysis, it offers a verifiable model for understanding how linguistic variation contributes to the Qur'an’s interpretive depth and theological coherence
