QMSLV: a gretl package for quasi maximum likelihood estimation of stochastic volatility models

    No full text
The paper presents a gretl package, QMLSV, for quasi-maximum likelihood (QML) estimation of univariate stochastic volatility (SV) models. Unlike univariate GARCH models, which include only a single random component (return innovation) affecting return but not volatility, SV models also include a volatility innovation, which affect volatility and makes model estimation a challenging task. QML estimation is one of the most well-established methods to address that task. In addition to the standard QLM method (Ruiz, 1994; Harvey, Ruiz, Shephard, 1994) based on the assumption that volatility and return innovations are not correlated (symmetric volatility), QMLSV also includes two methods for asymmetric volatility models, i.e. models in which volatility innovation is correlated with return innovation. The first of these is the modified QML method proposed by Harvey and Shephard in 1996, which provides a volatility predictor mainly similar to the Threshold GARCH model; the second is the iterative QML method recently proposed by Chirico (2024), which provides a volatility predictor similar to the EGARCH predictor. All three methods can also be applied in case of random-walk volatility as well as in case of Student-t distributed return innovations. Some examples illustrate the practical use of the package

VULVO-Vaginal Chronic Graft-Versus-Host Disease Assessment: A Single-Center Prospective Observational Study

Background: Vulvovaginal chronic graft-versus-host disease (vv-cGvHD) is an underrecognised complication after allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), with potential impact on sexual function, quality of life, and long-term morbidity. Few prospective data are available in the literature based on systematic gynaecological assessment. Material and methods: A prospective, observational, single-centre study was carried out to evaluate 1-year incidence and clinical features of vv-cGvHD in female patients undergoing HSCT among patients alive and relapse-free at day + 100. Standardised gynaecological examinations were performed at baseline, day + 100, 6, and 12 months. Data collection included patient-reported outcomes by use of a symptom-focused questionnaire to assess the presence and impact of vv-cGvHD. Results: Forty-one evaluable patients were included in the analysis and followed with scheduled gynaecological evaluations at defined intervals post-transplant. Vv-cGvHD was diagnosed in 12 out of 41 patients (29.3%), with six cases classified as grade 1 and six as grade 2 according to NIH criteria. The conditional cumulative incidence at 1 year was 30%. Half of the affected patients presented isolated genital involvement, without other cGvHD manifestations. Median onset was 6 months post-transplant. Chronic GvHD in other organs was the only factor associated with vv-cGvHD in univariate analysis (p = 0.02). Topical treatment with corticosteroids and hyaluronic acid was administered to 75% (n = 9) of affected patients, with no cases progressing to severe disease requiring surgical intervention. Conclusion: This study highlights a considerable incidence of vv-cGvHD among HSCT recipients, underlining the need for systematic screening and management protocols

    "Romanzo e trasformazioni sociali, 1970-2010"

In contemporary societies, advances in biomedical technologies have led to an increase in life expectancy, which is, however, accompanied by a growing prevalence of chronic and degenerative diseases. In turn, the rising number of older individuals – within a social context characterized by increasing individualism and the fragmentation of traditional family structures – gives rise to new challenges for state legal systems. Alongside the economic and social issues involved, ageing calls into question the autonomy of the individual within the broader republican community, directly engaging constitutional and public law. Building on this premise, and in the light of recent legislative developments, this contribution aims to explore the possibility of defining a constitutional status of the elderly person. In particular, the analysis focuses, on the one hand, on the condition of vulnerability of the elderly as an emerging legal category, assessing the risks and limitations of an approach that may reduce the person to a mere recipient of protection, and, on the other hand, on the fundamental role of the family as a primary social formation, within which the principle of solidarity and public intervention intertwine to ensure the protection of rights and the social inclusion of the elderly

Keeping up with the Joneses? The rise of modern universities and local economic development in Italy

This paper uses own built historical register tracing the evolution of Italian higher education from the High Middle Ages to 2010 to analyse the economic effects of the rise of modern universities. The registry data prompts the creation of a panel dataset measuring higher education supply across 110 Italian provinces from 1870 to 2010, which corresponds to the transition from elite to mass higher education in Italy. Our econometric approach combines a fixed effects estimator with Bartik-style instruments that exploit the historical cross-province distribution of higher education institutions in Italy. We find significant economic returns of universities, particularly in synergy with industrialisation, contributing to Italy’s transition to sustained growth. Our estimates predict that a province exposed to an average supply (equivalent to 7 universities, approximately) experiences an annual 2% increase in real gross value added per capita compared to a province with a zero supply. We show that about two thirds of these returns arise locally, while the remaining third originates from externalities. We argue that such high local concentration of economic returns contribute to fostering inequalities between small peripheral areas and large university hubs

Design of Molecular Lanthanide‐Based Quantum Light Sources for On‐Chip Integration

Lanthanide-based optical emitters are emerging as promising materials for quantum applications because of the long optical coherent lifetimes associated with their narrow emission lines. In this work, we investigate a series of lanthanide molecular complexes with a highly rigid tetrapodal benzimidazolic ligand (L) as potential highly coherent quantum light sources suitable for on-chip integration. The LnL complexes show sensitized Ln-centered emission in the visible and near-infrared spectral ranges with a well-resolved fine structure of the J sublevels. Remarkably, the EuL complex exhibits a single line related to the purely electric dipole 5D0→7F0 transition, of particular interest in quantum photonics. Notably, this formally forbidden line likely originates from an LMCT state, rather than from low symmetry or strong crystal-field effects. This mechanism enables the appearance of the band while maintaining a limited electric inhomogeneity of the ligand system, as supported by Judd–Ofelt analysis. These features contribute to the significant reduction of the room-temperature inhomogeneous linewidth (∼500 GHz) compared to typical zero-phonon lines of polyaromatic molecules in polymers. Importantly, these favorable properties persist in doped silica-based SiCO and PMMA films. Additionally, the doped SiCO film provides high excitation selectivity, minimal host autofluorescence, and broad color tunability
