    Comparative Analysis of the Performance of Automated Digital Cell Morphology Analyzers for Leukocyte Differentiation in Hematologic Malignancies: Mindray MC‐80 Versus West Medical Vision Hema

    Introduction: The use of artificial intelligence in hematology laboratories has improved the diagnostic evaluation of peripheral blood cells. The aim of this study is to compare the performance of two automated digital cell morphology analyzers, the Mindray MC-80 and the West Medical Vision Hema Pro, with manual microscopy, the gold standard, for leukocyte differentiation in patients with hematologic malignancies and infections. Methods: Peripheral blood smears from 75 patients were analyzed, including cases of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL, 4), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL, 20), acute myeloid leukemia (AML, 20), chronic myeloid leukemia (CML, 5), other lymphoproliferative disorders (LPD, 20), and infections (6). The agreement between microscopy, Vision Hema, and MC-80 was assessed by Bland-Altman analysis for eight leukocyte populations (neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, basophils, band cells, myelocytes, and metamyelocytes). Results: Vision Hema demonstrated better agreement with manual microscopy for eight normally expected leukocyte populations (neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, basophils, band cells, myelocytes, and metamyelocytes), whereas MC-80 exhibited greater biases, particularly in lymphocytes, basophils, and immature granulocytes. For pathologic cells, VH significantly overestimated blasts, while MC-80 classified them more accurately, showing better agreement with manual microscopy in acute leukemias. Additionally, MC-80 showed potential clinical value in detecting abnormal lymphocytes and promyelocytes, which may be relevant for hematologic malignancies. Conclusion: Vision Hema provides more reliable classification of normally expected leukocyte populations, while MC-80 shows advantages in detecting abnormal cells, particularly in hematologic malignancies

    Comparative assessment of physicochemical properties, functional diversity and enzymatic activities in three Opuntia ficus-indica soils across diverse climatic regions in Morocco

    In Morocco, Opuntia ficus-indica is grown in various climatic zones, each of which can greatly impact the soil quality and functioning. This study assesses the soil characteristics, bacterial load, functional microbial diversity, and enzymatic activities in O. ficus-indica soils from three distinct regions: Tafrant (subhumid), Fez (semi-arid), and Chichaoua (arid). Soil samples from these regions exhibited varying physicochemical properties, with neutral to alkaline pH, high concentrations of K, Na, and Ca, and biological activities, including microbial metabolic preferences and enzymatic activities. The data analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) revealed significant correlations in O ficus-indica soils across three regions of Morocco. In the subhumid region of Tafrant, there was a notable correlation between Shannon evenness index, amino acid metabolism by the microbial community, and β-galactosidase activity, with high levels of Fe, NH4+, and Cu. Conversely, in the semi-arid region of Fez, strong associations were observed between organic matter content, Mg, P, NO3-N, and increased microbial load, average well color development (AWCD), carbohydrate and polymer metabolism, and elevated phosphatase activity. The arid region of Chichaoua exhibited a distinct correlation between K and Zn levels, urease activity, and the metabolism of amines and amides substrates. Our results highlight distinct variations in the physicochemical properties, microbial community function, and enzymatic activities of O. ficusindica soils across the three Morocco’s regions. These findings highlight ecosystem uniqueness and offer key insights for biodiversity conservation and soil fertility management

    Impact of a personalized, strike early and strong approach on non-HDL-cholesterol levels and outcome in patients with acute myocardial infarction

    Aims: We retrospectively evaluated the impact on non-HDL-cholesterol (non-HDL-C) levels of the systematic introduction in our institution of an individualized, pre-defined, strike early and strong (SES) strategy for lipid-lowering therapy (LLT) in patients with acute myocardial infarction (MI). Methods: We analyzed data from 500 consecutive patients admitted across three periods: Period A (N = 198, January-June 2019), when the non-HDL-C goal was <100 mg/dL and a stepwise LLT approach was indicated; Period B (N = 180, January-June 2021), when the non-HDL-C goal was <85 mg/dL and a stepwise approach was recommended; Period C (N = 122, January-June 2023), when the SES protocol was introduced. Primary endpoints were the percentage of patients reaching the non- HDL-C goal during follow-up and the incidence of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) at one year. Results: Compared to the other periods, the prevalence of prescription at discharge of potent statins, alone or in combination with ezetimibe, and PCSK9 inhibitors was greater in Period C. The achievement of the non-HDL-C goal in Period C was higher (87 % vs 67 % and 58 % in Periods A and B, respectively; p < 0.001). This achievement was associated with a lower occurrence of MACE (7 % vs. 13 % in patients not at target; log-rank p = 0.027). MACE incidence was the lowest in patients with early and sustained non-HDL-C < 85 mg/dL during follow-up. Conclusion: The systematic introduction of an individualized, SES approach for LLT in patients with acute MI led to higher achievement of the non-HDL-C goal and this translated into a lower risk of MACE

    Agrivoltaics as a Sustainable Strategy to Enhance Food Security Under Water Scarcity

    Agrivoltaic offers a promising solution to integrate photovoltaic energy production with ongoing agricultural activities. This research investigates the impact of agrivoltaic on food security, using a transdisciplinary approach to study the responses of crop production in terms of biomass and food quality produced. Mainly chicory plants were grown in full sunlight (control plot) and shade plots generated by potential photovoltaic panels. Two water regimes (high and low water supply) were used to analyze variations in food security in both plots. The results showed that agrivoltaic systems effectively mitigate crop water stress caused by high temperatures and heat waves, improving food security by increasing biomass production and preserving food quality. While previous research has attributed the benefits of agrivoltaics primarily to improved soil moisture, this study demonstrates that the positive effects are primarily driven by differences in light intensity and air temperature between the shaded and control plots. The results have strong implications for water resource management, showing that agrivoltaics can reduce water use by approximately 50% compared to traditional agroecosystems without compromising food security. Agrivoltaics can address the challenges of water scarcity due to declining rainfall and reduce production costs associated with water use. Properly designed agrivoltaic systems offer a cleaner, more sustainable alternative to traditional agricultural practices, helping to adapt agriculture to climate change

    Bilateral Tax Competition and Regional Spillovers in Tax Treaty Formation

    This paper investigates tax competition in withholding tax rates signed under double tax treaties between developed and developing countries. We document a decline in average withholding tax rates since 1990 and attribute this trend to tax competition. As opposed to traditional tax competition, where every foreign investor benefits from lower tax rates, tax treaties allow countries to compete bilaterally, cutting tax rates for investors from a specific country and leaving taxes for everyone else unaffected. We test our predictions empirically for the four different types of withholding tax rates on passive income in more than 900 double tax treaties. We find strong support for a positive relationship in withholding tax rates in tax treaties signed by developing countries in relation to the same origin country of investment, supporting the notion of tax competition

    Modified TASE Runge-Kutta methods for integrating stiff differential equations

    We propose a new class of numerical methods, called MTRK for short, derived by an appropriate modification of the Time-Accurate and highly-Stable Explicit (TASE) Runge-Kutta methods introduced by Bassenne, Fu, and Mani [J. Comput. Phys., 424 (2021), 109847] and then extended by Calvo, Montijano, and Randez [J. Comput. Phys., 436 (2021), 110316]. The MTRK methods are very efficient for dealing with the stiffness of differential problems without resorting to implicit methods, which incur high computational costs as they require the solution of nonlinear algebraic equations at each step. An in-depth analysis of the stability and consistency properties of MTRK methods via Butcher trees shows not only that they definitely improve existing TASE Runge-Kutta methods, but also that they can be advantageous compared to some well-known methods such as W-methods and Rosenbrock methods. This is confirmed by numerical experiments performed with nonlinear partial differential equations from applications
