A Complex Networks Approach to Evaluate the 15-Minute City Paradigm and Urban Segregation at Different Scales

    No full text
This paper proposes to exploit complex network analysis to evaluate service accessibility within urban environments in accordance with the 15-minute city paradigm. Our approach introduces an analytical pipeline that includes the quantification of urban segregation and allows for detailed comparisons between different cities and distinct urban areas. The 15-minute city concept emphasizes the importance of having fundamental services and amenities accessible within a 15-minute walk or bike ride, aiming to enhance urban livability and sustainability. By modeling cities as complex networks, we analyze various metrics to capture the intricate relationships and accessibility patterns within urban spaces. Our methodology assesses the connectivity and distribution of PoIs, the transportation networks, and the residential areas, providing insights into urban density and diversity. Furthermore, we suggest to use Closeness centrality as a metric to quantify urban segregation, also highlighting how disparities in access to essential services can be easily interpretable by means of other socioeconomic inequalities. The methodology is showcased on two case studies, i.e., the Italian cities of Milan and Turin

Buoni genitori. Come esperti e famiglie costruiscono la genitorialità

    No full text

Resistivity mapping of SiC wafers by quantified Raman spectroscopy

    Get PDF
μRaman spectroscopy measurements were used to study the resistivity in 4H-SiC samples by intercalibrating with Eddy current measurements (eddy-current probe that accurately measures bulk resistivity of wafers). The position and line width associated with the Raman longitudinal optical phonon-plasmon coupled (LOPC) mode were used since their variation from the reference values of a material in the absence of dopant-generated defects is proportional to the amount of the free carrier concentration in the conduction band present in the semiconductor. Using wafers of known resistivity to calibrate the model and deconvolving the individual recorded spectra, a multi-variable model was created to predict the resistivity of individual map points. Resistivity was thus predicted in a pointwise manner resulting in maps of 92 points over a 6-inch diameter area of a wafer, from which false-colour images were created showing the spatial distribution along the X and Y axes, and in the bulk, along the Z axis of the resistivity. The analysis procedure was automated by creating suitable R-language codes that extract the necessary information on the individual aspects of the analysis and create the images described above from a single dataset

Online OCHEM multi-task model for solubility and lipophilicity prediction of platinum complexes

Predicting the solubility and lipophilicity of platinum(II, IV) complexes is essential for prioritizing potential anticancer candidates in drug discovery. This study introduces the first publicly available online model for predicting the solubility of platinum complexes, addressing the lack of literature and models in this regard. Using a time-split dataset, we developed a consensus model with a Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) of 0.62 through 5-cross-validation on a training set of 284 historical compounds (solubility data reported prior to 2017). However, the RMSE increased to 0.86 when applied to a prospective test set of 108 compounds reported after 2017. Further analysis of the high prediction errors revealed that these inaccuracies are primarily attributed to the underrepresentation of novel chemical scaffolds, particularly Pt(IV) derivatives, in the training sets. For instance, a series of eight phenanthroline-containing compounds, not covered by the training set's chemical space, had an RMSE of 1.3. When the model was redeveloped using a combined dataset, the RMSE of this series significantly decreased to 0.34 under the same validation protocol. Additionally, we developed an interpretable linear model to identify structural features and functional groups that influence the solubility of platinum complexes. We further validated the correlation between solubility and lipophilicity, consistent with the Yalkowsky General Solubility Equation. Building on these insights, we developed a final multitask model that simultaneously predicts solubility and lipophilicity as two endpoints with RMSE = 0.62 and 0.44, respectively. The data and final developed model is available at https://ochem.eu/article/31

Clinical Features of Oral Lichen Planus: A Pictorial and Systematic Review

    No full text
Oral lichen planus (OLP) is an inflammatory mucocutaneous relapsing and remitting condition that includes a spectrum of oral clinical manifestations including mild painless white lesions to painful erosions and ulcers. The complexity of clinical presentation of OLP lesions often represents a challenge for both young and experienced otolaryngologists and dental practitioners. Therefore, the aim of the present article was to review the literature regarding the main clinical features of OLP. A literature search was conducted in four electronic databases (Medline / PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science) using the combination of the terms "oral lichen planus" AND "symptoms" OR "signs" OR "clinical". The initial search resulted in 432 articles. After screening the duplicates and following the application of exclusion criteria, the full texts of 18 articles were included in the review. A thorough knowledge of clinical patterns and symptoms of OLP is crucial for any otolaryngologist and dental practitioner. An early diagnosis and a long term follow up seem to be the best clinical approach to manage such subtle and chronic condition

Conventional and Innovative Drying/Roasting Technologies: Effect on Bioactive and Sensorial Profiles in Nuts and Nut-Based Products

    No full text
Nuts are widely recognized for their exceptional nutritional value, being rich in bioactive compounds such as polyphenols, mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids, dietary fiber, and essential minerals. This review focuses on the effects of roasting technologies, specifically of pistachios, hazelnuts, and almonds, evaluating the changes in polyphenol contents, lipid profiles, and the release of volatile organic compounds through the Maillard reaction. Roasting, a common processing technique, enhances the sensory attributes of nuts, including flavor, aroma, and texture, while simultaneously influencing their nutritional and chemical profiles. The Maillard reaction, triggered during roasting, plays a crucial role in developing the characteristic flavors of roasted nuts, but can also lead to the formation of acrylamide under certain conditions. Understanding the balance between enhancing sensory quality and retaining nutritional properties is essential for optimizing roasting conditions. Innovative technologies offer sustainable and efficient alternatives to traditional methods. By focusing on these three major nut varieties, this review provides valuable insights into the changes that occur before and after roasting, highlighting strategies to balance sensory qualities and nutritional preservation. Further research is essential to refine these techniques, enabling the production of high-quality nuts that deliver superior health benefits while meeting consumer expectations
