Seven wild and cultivated Salvia species and two Phlomis species, used traditionally in Valencian medicine to treat a variety of external and internal ailments, were studied. New ethnobotanical data are provided, obtained from semistructured interviews with 34 people in the Valencian area. A seasonal characterization of the essential oil of a wild sage, Salvia blancoana Webb & Heldr. subsp. mariolensis Figuerola, by GC-FID and GC-MS was carried out as a means to ensure quality control of endemic traditional species such as this one, which has been commercialized by local industries. A comparison with the essential oil of Salvia lavandulifolia Vahl subsp. lavandulifolia allowed inclusion of the wild sage within the commercial ‘Spanish sage’ oil.The authors are grateful to the Institute for Catalan Studies for financial support through the Borsa d’estudi Països CatalansEmeline Hahn acknowledges financial support from an ERASMUS Internship (FsTRASBO48).Ciencias Experimentale

A high intramuscular fat content characterizes Wagyu (WY) cattle breed. Our objective was to compare beef from WY, WY-by-Angus, or Wangus (WN) steers with European, Angus-by- Charolais-Limousine crossbred steers (ACL), considering metabolic biomarkers pre-slaughtering and nutritional characteristics, including health-related indexes of the lipid fraction. The fattening system with olein-rich diets and no exercise restriction included 82 steers, 24 WY, 29 WN, and 29 ACL. The slaughter ages and weights were (median and interquartile range) 38.4 mo.-old (34.9–40.3 mo.) and 840 kg (785–895 kg) for WY; for WN, 30.6 mo. (26.9–36.5 mo.) and 832 kg (802–875 kg), and for ACL steers, 20.3 mo.-old (19.0–22.7 mo.) and 780 kg (715–852 kg). Blood lipid-related metabolites, except for non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) and low-density level cholesterol (LDL), were higher in WY and WN than in ACL, while glucose was lower in WY and WN. Leptin was higher in WN than in ACL. Pre-slaughtering values of plasma HDL underscored as a possible metabolic biomarker directly related to beef quality. The amino-acid content in beef did not differ among experimental groups, except for more crude protein in ACL. Compared to ACL, WY steers showed higher intramuscular fat in sirloin (51.5 vs. 21.9%) and entrecote (59.6 vs. 27.6%), more unsaturated fatty acids in entrecote (55.8 vs. 53.0%), and more oleic acid in sirloin (46 vs. 41.3%) and entrecote (47.5 vs. 43.3%). Compared to ACL entrecote, WY and WN showed better atherogenic (0.6 and 0.55 vs. 0.69), thrombogenicity (0.82 and 0.92 vs. 1.1), and hypocholesterolemic/hypercholesterolemic index (1.9 and 2.1 vs. 1.7). Therefore, beef’s nutritional characteristics depend on breed/crossbred, slaughtering age and cut, with WY and WN entrecote samples showing a healthier lipid fraction. This research was funded by the Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology fromthe Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, grant number CDTI-IDI-20180254.Veterinari

The development of critical thinking as an attitude in higher education: the literary text as educative resource

Critical thinking is a much demanded capacity among university students, but at this stage of education we have few tools to carry it out. We postulate that part of the problem may be due to the industrial-technological approach of the current educational curricula. Secondly, we analyze the general management of the concept of critical thinking among university professors that is commonly handled. While the concept has been classically divided between skills and attitudes, teachers seem to focus more on cognitive skills. We propose a recovery of the moral habit and attitude in the concept that are also part of the critical exercise without denying the importance of skills. The recovery of habit will be developed through two capacities whose philosophical tradition dates back to Hanna Arendt’s thesis on the agent who collaborates with evil: the one who cannot intuit the moral conditions of his actions due to pure and simple thoughtlessness. Namely, there are two capacities to develop: critique of authority and moral imagination. Finally, through the last capacity we will justify the proposal of the use of literary texts as a formation of critical thinking in the university, although it does not exclude other formative stages. The attitude that emerges from the constant exercise of critical thinking actively collaborates with a healthy democracy that cannot leave cultural tradition behind.Filosofí

From admiration to envy. Some problems in role-modelling and character education

In this article we will explore some of the starting points that positive mimesis might require in the field of moral education from an essentially philosophical stance. Girard appears to be largely unknown to the world of educational theory, yet his powerful insights into the character of desire help us to understand some of the problems that arise in the educational vision of role-modelling and which become the focus of our research: the reasons why someone stops admiring a virtuous person and transitions to possessive desires dominated by envy. This transition poses a challenge to those who argue that moral modelling is a fundamental part of moral education. To address this problem, we will also need to understand both the mimetic automatism and rivalry that often arise as a consequence of mimetic desire, and the functioning of the emotion of admiration, whose intentional direction is the opposite of envy. The context of the research is based on certain conclusions already reached on this subject in other philosophical currents, such as the theory of character education or the theory of virtues, which do not seem to have been brought into line with the philosophy of René Girard.

    No full text

Unraveling the Molecular Determinants of Manual Therapy: An Approach to Integrative Therapeutics for the Treatment of Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis

    Get PDF
Application of protocols without parameter standardization and appropriate controls has led manual therapy (MT) and other physiotherapy-based approaches to controversial outcomes. Thus, there is an urgency to carefully define standard protocols that elevate physiotherapy treatments to rigorous scientific demands. One way in which this can be achieved is by studying gene expression and physiological changes that associate to particular, parameter-controlled, treatments in animal models, and translating this knowledge to properly designed, objective, quantitatively-monitored clinical trials (CTs). Here, we propose a molecular physiotherapy approach (MPTA) requiring multidisciplinary teams, to uncover the scientific reasons behind the numerous reports that historically attribute health benefits to MT-treatments. The review focuses on the identification of MT-induced physiological and molecular responses that could be used for the treatment of fibromyalgia (FM) and chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME). The systemic effects associated to mechanical-load responses are considered of particular relevance, as they suggest that defined, low-pain anatomic areas can be selected for MT treatment and yet yield overall benefits, an aspect that might result in it being essential to treat FM. Additionally, MT can provide muscle conditioning to sedentary patients without demanding strenuous physical effort, which is particularly detrimental for CFS/ME patients, placing MT as a real option for integrative medicine programs to improve FM and CFS/ME.This research was funded by the Fundación Universidad Católica de Valencia San Vicente Mártir (UCV) Research Grant Program grant number 2018-121-001.Fisioterapi

However, thyroid hormone (TH) profiles of elevated thyrotropin and low thyroxine (T4) are not consistently observed. Recently, autoantibodies to the Se transporter SELENOP (SELENOP-aAb) have been identified in Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and shown to impair selenoprotein expression. We hypothesized that SELENOP-aAb are prevalent in CFS, and associate with reduced selenoprotein expression and impaired TH deiodination. Se status and SELENOP-aAb prevalence was compared by combining European CFS patients (n = 167) and healthy controls (n = 545) from different sources. The biomarkers total Se, glutathione peroxidase (GPx3) and SELENOP showed linear correlations across the samples without reaching saturation, indicative of Se deficiency. SELENOP-aAb prevalence was 9.6–15.6% in CFS versus 0.9–2.0% in controls, depending on cut-off for positivity. The linear correlation between Se and GPx3 activity was absent in SELENOP-aAb positive patients, suggesting impaired Se supply of kidney. A subgroup of paired control (n = 119) and CSF (n = 111) patients had been characterized for TH and biochemical parameters before. Within this subgroup, SELENOP-aAb positive patients displayed particularly low deiodinase activity (SPINA-GD index), free T3 levels, total T3 to total T4 (TT3/TT4) and free T3 to free T4 (FT3/FT4) ratios. In 24 h urine, iodine concentrations were significantly lower in SELENOP-aAb positive than in SELENOP-aAb negative patients or controls (median (IQR); 43.2 (16.0) vs. 58.9 (45.2) vs. 89.0 (54.9) μg/L). The data indicate that SELENOP-aAb associate with low deiodination rate and reduced activation of TH to active T3. We conclude that a subset of CFS patients express SELENOP-aAb that disturb Se transport and reduce selenoprotein expression in target tissues. Hereby, TH activation decreases as an acquired condition not reflected by thyrotropin and T4 in blood. This hypothesis opens new diagnostic and therapeutic options for SELENOP-aAb positive CFS, but requires clinical evidence from intervention trials. The research in the lab of LS was supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG Research Unit 2558 “TraceAge”, Scho 849/ 6–2, and CRC/TR 296 “Local control of TH action”, LocoTact, P17). Vivir, reír y aprender a morir. Propuesta de intervención en 5º de Educación Primaria

    Get PDF
This dissertation explores the importance of death education in the social, family and, above all, educational context. Nowadays, death is experienced as a gloomy, sad, and distressing event. Moreover, this reality is protected and vetoed in many adult conversations, transmitting various attitudes, beliefs, and behaviours to children, who are born embracing life in every sense. Thus, it is considered a social and educational taboo and there is a curricular vacuum regarding death. Therefore, the ultimate aim of this work is to design an intervention proposal to determine the presence of death education in educational and curricular regulations in Primary Education in order to naturalise this reality, and to detect possible attitudes that influence the understanding of death. This objective will be achieved through a bibliographical review of the most relevant documents and authors and the design of activities using ICT resources to determine the cognitive, emotional, and social development of pupils, guaranteeing efficient didactic support. In short, our passage through life is ephemeral, so it is important to include in school the awareness of death and to teach finiteness as a human condition in order to accept and prepare ourselves for our coming deaths. Moreover, knowing that we are going to die is what makes life unique and unrepeatable.Educació

Evaluating the complete (44‑item), short (20‑item) and ultra‑short (10‑item) versions of the Big Five Inventory (BFI) in the Brazilian population

    Get PDF
The Big Five Inventory (BFI) is an instrument designed to assess the personality of individuals aged 18 and above. The original version consists of 44 items divided into five sub-scales representing each of the five personality factors: agreeableness, neuroticism, conscientiousness, openness, and extraversion. The main purpose of this study was to assess the factorial structure of the 44-item BFI and the reliability of two shorter versions with 20 and 10 items. The study also aimed to present normative data for interpreting scores from the short and ultrashort versions of the BFI for the Brazilian population. A total of 3565 individuals with a mean age of 33.3 years (SD = 13.0) from all Brazilian states participated in the study, with 44.2% from the State of Rio Grande do Sul. Participants completed a sociodemographic questionnaire and the BFI. Confirmatory factor analysis showed poor adaptation of the original 44-item model, but the short and ultrashort versions with 20 and 10 items respectively had good adaptation indexes and reliability, with Omega coefficients above 0.70. Normative data for the shorter versions were presented using mean, standard deviation, and percentiles (lower, medium, and higher). The study concluded that the short and ultrashort versions of the BFI have good reliability and can be used in surveys requiring a brief personality assessment.Psicologí

Away but connected: from the mountains of Babia to the plains of Cáceres. A study of Spanish transhumance at the turn of the nineteenth to the twentieth centuries

One of the most important systems of sheep transhumance since the Middle Ages in Spain occurred between the mountains of northern Leon and the Extremadura Meadow lands – a 500-kilometre journey on foot. We analyse here an interesting collection of thirty letters, written at the turn of the nineteenth to the twentieth century, and sent by the shepherds responsible for the flock from the wintering land to the owner of the animals. The only connection with the owner for seven long months but also with their villages and families, were these letters.Antropologí
