Micropropagation and cryopreservation by vitrification of the Spanish endemic medicinal plant Sideritis leucantha Cav. subsp. leucantha (Lamiaceae)

    No full text
Sideritis leucantha Cav. subsp. leucantha is a Spanish endemic medicinal plant that faces conservation problems. Therefore, this work is aimed to develop a protocol for the in vitro propagation and cryopreservation of shoot tip explants of this species. The morphogenic responses were recorded using Murashige and Skoog medium containing 6-benzyladenine, 2-isopentenyladenine, kinetin, or thidiazuron for multiplication and 1-naphthaleneacetic acid or indole-3-butyric acid for rooting. Maximal shoot proliferation was observed with medium containing 0.088 M sucrose plus 0.22 or 0.44 μM 6-benzyladenine. The longest shoots and greatest number of nodes per shoot were obtained from cultures incubated on medium with 0.44 μM 2-isopentenyladenine. Optimal rooting was achieved with 1-naphthaleneacetic acid at concentrations of 0.05 μM (highest percentage of rooted shoots) and 0.26 μM (highest number of roots). The morphological traits of the regenerated plantlets did not differ from those of wildtype plants, and these plantlets were successfully adapted to ex vitro conditions. After cryopreservation by vitrification, the highest percentage of regenerated shoot tips (70 ± 6%) was obtained with the treatment consisting of 60 min of loading solution (0.4 M sucrose plus 2 M glycerol in liquid medium) followed by exposure to plant vitrification solution 2 for 30 min at room temperature and then immersion in liquid nitrogen for 60 min. This study constitutes the first work on the micropropagation of S. leucantha subsp. leucantha and the first work on the cryopreservation of Sideritis species. The results obtained could be applied commercially and also in the conservation for other species of Lamiaceae. This work has been supported by Generalitat Valenciana, Project GV04B-459. J.E.R.L. was awarded a grant from University of Alicante.Ciencias Experimentale

Virtual simulation in teacher education across borders

    No full text
There is already an abundant literature on the virtues of simulation in education. However, there is also a lack of assessment instruments to determine the impact of virtual simulation and virtual exchange on participants’ self-realisation of learning in teacher education. The aim of this study is to identify the variables that best describe students’ learning of current educational issues. A questionnaire consisting of Likert-type items was used as a metacognitive assessment tool to provide data for the study. An exploratory longitudinal study was conducted over three years. Data were collected using students’ answers to the questionnaire. A convenience sampling procedure was used, with participating students enrolled in the Didactic Resources module of English as a Second Language (ESL) in an Official Master’s Degree in Teacher Training in Compulsory Secondary Education and Baccalaureate, Vocational Training, and Language Teaching. The most strongly correlated variables that best explain the dependent variable (“I have gained deeper insights into current educational issues”) addressed inclusion, special learning needs, service learning, and simulation through intercultural dialogue. Each of the variables significantly contributes to the estimation of perceived acquisition of insight into current educational issues through virtual simulation.Educació

Salbutamol transport and deposition in healthy cat airways under different breathing conditions and particle sizes

Salbutamol is a bronchodilatator commonly used for the treatment of feline inflammatory lower airway disease, including asthma or acute bronchospasm. As in humans, a pressurized metered dose inhaler (pMDI) is used in conjunction with a spacer and a spherical mask to facilitate salbutamol administration. However, efficacy of inhalation therapy is influenced by different factors including the noncooperative character of cats. In this study, the goal was to use computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to analyze the impact of breathing patterns and salbutamol particle size on overall drug transport and deposition using a specific spherical mask and spacer designed for cats. A model incorporating three-dimensional cat airway geometry, a commercially available spherical mask, and a 10  cm spacer, was used for CFD analysis. Two peak inspiratory flows were tested: 30  mL/s and 126  mL/s. Simulations were performed with 30s breathing different inspiratory and expiratory times, respiratory frequencies and peaks. Droplet spray transport and deposition were simulated with different particle sizes typical of the drug delivery therapies (1, 5, 10, and 15  μm). The percentage of particle deposition into the device and upper airways decreased with increasing particle diameter during both flows imposed in this cat model. During increased mean ventilatory rate (MVR) conditions, most of the salbutamol was lost in the upper airways. And during decreased MVR conditions, most of the particles remained in suspension (still in hold-up) between the mask and the carina, indicating the need for more than 30  s to be transported. In both flows the percentage of particles traveling to the lung was low at 1.5%–2.3%. In conclusion, in contrast to what has been described in the human literature, the results from this feline model suggest that the percentage of particles deposited on the upper airway decreases with increasing particle diameter. This study is supported by grants PID2021-125731OB-C31 and PID2021-125731OB-C33 from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033/ and FEDER (“A way to build Europe”).Veterinari

An approach to totalitarianism and its foundations, from the perspective of Hannah Arendt as part of the SHOA teaching in the context of secondary education

In the Shoah we can see how events surpass causes. An origin that has been called Totalitarianism, which exceeds all known limits so far. An anti-Semitism that produces some tools of Evil not known up to now. This is why the teacher will find in the article the data to be able to see the genesis of the term and more than that the consequences that are unleashed in the production of a new political system where it will give legality with the Final Solution to the extermination of the Jewish People. In the articles you can see how there is a change of society to reach a new genetically superior man, the Aryan. The Jew, the gypsy, the communist, the homosexual, is his counterpart, his enemy, they must be eliminated. For this, a series of tools are used, such as: The single party where there is only room for those who enter into the idea of society, the others are not part of the nation. Propaganda will be used as a channel of the only truth that emanates from the single party. The secret police will be in charge of enforcing these principles, a police that suspects all individuals as enemies of the party. The concentration camp will be the social laboratory to be able to change the human being and turn it into an animal devoid of spontaneity.Educació

The holocaust, an ethical and educative

El análisis del periodo nazi sirve como ejemplo de conductas que deben ser evitadasThe Holocaust is one of the most important historical events of the twentieth century. The implementation from 1933 of the racial policies of the Nazi Party led to the marginalization and exclusion of various groups, whose lives were considered worthless. The outbreak of World War II in 1939 marked the beginning of the planned and medically supervised murder of people with physical or mental disabilities. Between 1933 and 1945 six million Jews were murdered. There were other victims such as Gypsies, homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses, political prisoners and, in general, all those considered "asocial", who did not fit into the Nazi racial ideal. To carry out this program of racial cleansing, the Nazi Party had the active participation of doctors and health personnel. During the war experiments are carried out on prisoners of the camps mainly for military purposes. What has been learned about the actions of doctors and other health workers during Nazism allows reflection on ethical aspects related not only to the way of carrying out research, but also to the duty to care for all people regardless of their state of health, social, economic, religious, cultural situation, etc. The training of all future professionals in a plural society must incorporate transversal subjects in which respect for diversity is addressed. The analysis of the Nazi period serves as an example of behaviors that should be avoided.

The current education needs a different approach, which focuses equally on the teaching of academic areas, as well as on emotional education, since current schools don´t offer the necessary attention to factors as important as frustration, problems in the emotional expression or the difficulty in regulating emotions by the students. Therefore, this Final Degree Project is going to analyze of the concepts of frustration, emotional education and the main theories about emotional intelligence with the aim of knowing the value of self-concept and the motivation in learning. In addition, an analysis of the emotional development of the students will be carried out, as well as of the factors that cause frustration in learning, the main family profiles and their influence, the classroom climate and the characteristics of the teachers. On the other hand, an annual intervention will be prepare that promotes a scheduled follow-up of the students through objectives and organizational techniques for the prevention of frustration, both academic and personal through an emotional agenda. At the same time and with the aim of distinguishing emotional risk behaviors, the following proposal contains a section on emotional regulation and classroom organization, as well as a weekly methodology based on assemblies to deal with emotions and regulation and expression techniques. Finally, the intervention proposal has been adapted around the current legislation.

    Get PDF
New technologies are part of modern society and, consequently, of children's lives. However, due to the increase in the use of screens by children, several negative repercussions can be observed and must be addressed. The purpose of this paper is to expose one of the most current problems in children at the Early Childhood Education stage: the irresponsible and inappropriate use of screens. In order to do so, a theoretical framework has been drawn up, based on the search of specialised bibliographical references, in which an overview is made of how technology has been infiltrating society and, consequently, our educational system. At the same time, key ideas on this topic are developed, such as recommendations for its use by various institutions, negative repercussions, the process of digital disaffection and the benefits and appropriate use of devices in educational contexts. Later on, a practical project has been developed based on the analysis of the responses of certain families to a survey related to the subject and a school for families that has as its central element an informative guide on the correct and responsible use of new technologies in children under six years of age. In conclusion, the aim of this work is to address one of the needs that can be observed most commonly in a classroom at this stage of education.Educació

Dynamic mathematical model as a tool for detecting and preventing school violence: a case report

    Get PDF
Currently, coexistence is an essential factor that influences educational quality. Issues relating to school violence affect a large number of students, affecting their personal, academic, and professional futures. For this reason, this study aimed to present a different study tool that would allow the optimization of the factors that influence classroom climate, establish mechanisms to detect and predict how the modification of these factors can positively or negatively affect it, and determine the most appropriate intervention before it occurs. Dynamic mathematical models are complex tools that allow us to study a given problem or reality in real-time and develop predictive instruments through the analysis of mathematical relationships, allowing us to adapt the answers in a customized manner. In this study, an example is provided in measuring classroom climate throughout an academic course in a simulated situation. It consists of a dynamic mathematical model developed with Stella 10.0 software using only some of the variables that affect classroom climate, which are distributed in two sections—a psychological one that includes Rabies Level and Isolation Level due to loss of self-esteem and a physical one that includes the number of aggressive students and the total number of physically assaulted students. Since the classroom climate is very complex, other variables or a greater number of them could have been used in this hypothetical case; however, the example explains how this kind of model works and shows the great utility that it can have in this type of study. Regarding the most significant benefits that this tool can offer, some stand out. On the one hand, we can adapt the instrument to the specific characteristics of a class group, introducing or eliminating the variables depending on their relevance to the problem at hand. On the other hand, this versatile tool not only adapts to the reality of the classroom but also to the specific moment in which the students are. The greatest limitation of a Dynamic Mathematical Model as a tool is the large quantity of information required to adjust the model to reality; the more information we have, the more adjusted the model can be. Furthermore, gathering the type of information needed to develop the model is complicated.Educació
