This article focuses on the description of the other look of Valencia in the fifteenth century, that of social marginalisation, which could be manifested by the exercise of various immoral offices. The following pages describe two female groups, particularly treated as vile: those of healers, sorcerers, and witches, whose strength was considered to be of demonic origin, and prostitutes, dedicated to covering a «minor evil» in society, but viewed as indignant by society due to the practical exercise of their profession.Humanidade

A Longstanding Duality: Discursive Construction of the EU vs the UK in the British Broadsheets' News Discourse of the Brexit Referendum

The relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union has always been tumultuous and problematic, and European integration has always been a controversial topic in the UK’s contemporary politics. However, current research on the Brexit referendum's news discourse hardly addresses this topic directly. Therefore, this paper analyses the discursive construction of the UK versus the EU during the campaign coverage of the Brexit referendum in major British broadsheets. To do so, a corpus of four major British broadsheets along ideological lines (left-right) and Brexit stance (Leave-Remain) was analysed by applying a mixed method approach of Corpus Assisted Discourse Studies (Discursive News Values Analysis along with some Corpus Linguistic tools and techniques). The way news values were adopted in the campaign coverage of the British broadsheets shows a certain continuation of historical discourses around the relationship of the entities. The results show that news values during the campaign coverage were adopted by the pro-leave outlets to construct a highly negative and elite-associated image of the EU in contrast to the UK, while the pro-remain broadsheets mostly focused on a limited, practical and economic argument in favour of the EU, maintaining and highlighting the importance of UK independence.Economí

All authors have read and agreed to the published version of the manuscript.Minimally invasive foot surgery (MIS) has become a common procedure to treat various pathologies, and accuracy in the angle of metatarsal osteotomies is crucial to ensure optimal results. This randomized controlled trial with 37 patients investigates whether the implementation of a digital inclinometer can improve the accuracy of osteotomies compared to traditional freehand techniques. Patients were randomly allocated to group A (n = 15) receiving inclinometer-assisted surgery or group B (n = 22) receiving conventional surgery. Osteotomies were performed and outcomes were evaluated using an inclinometer. The inclinometer group showed a significant decrease in plantar pressure from 684.1 g/cm2 pretreatment to 449.5 g/cm2 post-treatment (p < 0.001, Cohen’s d = 5.477). The control group decreased from 584.5 g/cm2 to 521.5 g/cm2 (p = 0.001, Cohen’s d = 0.801). The effect size between groups was large (Cohen’s d = −2.572, p < 0.001). The findings indicate a significant improvement in accuracy and reduction in outliers when using an inclinometer, suggesting that this technology has the potential to improve surgical practice and patient outcomes in minimally invasive metatarsal osteotomies.Podologí

Role of Exosomal miR-205-5p Cargo in Angiogenesis and Cell Migration

Exosomes or small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) represent a pivotal component in intercellular communication, carrying a diverse array of biomolecules. Several factors can affect sEVs release dynamics, as occurs in hyperglycemia or inflammation. In fact, sEVs release has been associated with the promotion of physio-pathological processes. Among the sEVs cargo, microRNAs play an essential role in cell-to-cell regulation. More concretely, miR-205-5p is related to angiogenesis and cell proliferation. The aim of this study is to understand the specific role of sEVs containing miR-205-5p under high glucose conditions. ARPE-19 cells were cultured with high glucose (HG) for 5 days. sEVs were isolated and characterized. sEVs from ARPE-19 were used for angiogenesis and cell proliferation. HG increased sEVs release but downregulated miR-205-5p cargo expression compared to the control. sEVs from HG-treated ARPE-19 cells promoted tube formation and migration processes. In contrast, miR-205-5p overexpression (by mimic transfection) decreased angiogenesis and cell migration. Our results demonstrate how ARPE-19 cells respond to HG challenge by increasing sEVs with weak miR-205-5p cargo. The absence of this miRNA in sEVs is enough to promote angiogenesis. In contrast, restoring sEVs-miR-205-5p levels decreased it. These findings open new possibilities in sEVs-based therapies containing miR-205-5p against angiogenesis. This research was funded by the Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación, Agencia Estatal de Investigación Española, grant number PID2020-117875GB-10; Instituto de Salud Carlos III grant number PI21/00083; and the European Union research fund HORIZON MSCA 2021-DN-01-01_RETORNA 101073316.Medicin

Dopaminergic neuron loss in mice due to increased levels of wild‑type human α‑Synuclein only takes place under conditions of accelerated aging

Understanding the intricate pathogenic mechanisms behind Parkinson’s disease (PD) and its multifactorial nature presents a significant challenge in disease modeling. To address this, we explore genetic models that better capture the disease’s complexity. Given that aging is the primary risk factor for PD, this study investigates the impact of aging in conjunction with overexpression of wild‑type human α‑synuclein (α‑Syn) in the dopaminergic system. This is achieved by introducing a novel transgenic mouse strain overexpressing α‑Syn under the TH‑promoter within the senescence‑ accelerated SAMP8 (P8) genetic background. Behavioral assessments, conducted at both 10 and 16 months of age, unveil motor impairments exclusive to P8 α‑SynTg mice, a phenomenon conspicuously absent in α‑SynTg mice. These findings suggest a synergistic interplay between heightened α‑Syn levels and the aging process, resulting in motor deficits. These motor disturbances correlate with reduced dopamine (DA) levels, increased DA turnover, synaptic terminal loss, and notably, the depletion of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra and noradrenergic neurons in the locus coeruleus. Furthermore, P8 α‑SynTg mice exhibit alterations in gut transit time, mirroring early PD symptoms. In summary, P8 α‑SynTg mice effectively replicate parkinsonian phenotypes by combining α‑Syn transgene expression with accelerated aging. This model offers valuable insights into the understanding of PD and serves as a valuable platform for further research. This work was funded by grants from Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovacion (PID2020-117937 GB-I00, RED2018- 102723-T, and CIBERNED CB06/05/0086) and Generalitat Valenciana (PROMETEO/2021/028) to I.F. After the Franciscan Question? Sources and historiography on Francis of Assisi

The article presents considerations on the Franciscan question, born with Sabatier, believing that it is not completely overcome by historiography, but that some Franciscan questions remain. The author starts from the consideration that two methodological points of Sabatier are still valid: the use of the writings of Francis as a touchstone of the biographical sources and the consideration that all sources are biased and those that hide their bias are more dangerous on a historical level. With the addition of a third point that derives from the discoveries of Sabatier, developed with that of Delorme of the Legenda antiqua Perusina/Compilatio Assisiensis, that is, that the testimonies of the companions are fundamental, even if the latest research shows that the contraposition between the sources must be attenuated since they are intertwined with each other. Some problematic blocks remain some Franciscan questions on which there is no uniformity among historians. 1. The hierarchy of sources. 2. The reductive readings of Francis' historical relevance, both in the sense that he could not escape the mould of his time, and in the sense that his images are produced by the culture and ideologies of the different historical periods. 3. Continuity or caesura between Francis and the Order of Minors. 4 Francis' relationship with popular movements. 5. His relationship with the pope and the ecclesiastical hierarchy. 6. Extension of his preaching of peace in Christianity also to the "infidels".Humanidade

Emotional intelligence in parents is crucial for the healthy development of children, as it allows them to understand and adequately manage their own emotions, which influences the emotional environment of the home. When parents lack emotional regulation strategies, they can transmit negative patterns of emotional behavior to their children. This can result in difficulties for children to understand and manage their own emotions, which can manifest in behavioral problems, low self-esteem or difficulties in interpersonal relationships, among others. The objective of the work is to design an intervention program whose objective is to provide parents or families with resources so that they learn to emotionally regulate their children. The program is made up of nine sessions, through which both parents and children incorporate knowledge about emotional regulation with the aim of improving their understanding of emotions and acquiring emotional regulation strategies in conflictive situations. Completing the program can have a significant impact on emotional well-being and family cohesion, offering families the tools necessary to cultivate healthy relationships and face life's challenges with resilience and understanding.Psicologí

Practical interest and didactic approach as the fundamental principles of the Castigos y dotrinas que un sabio dava a sus hijas. New contributions to the a corpus of castilian texts about the education of women

This article proposes the analysis of the Castigos y dotrinas que un sabio dava a sus hijas, a short treatise presumably anonymous and dated around the last years of the 15th century. In terms of subject matter, the text is part of the corpus of publications that examine the nature of women and, in particular, their instruction, essentially aimed at their role as perfect wives. The Castigos y dotrinas que un sabio dava a sus hijas transcends the philogino- misogino debate in favour of a new organisation, the didactic-doctrinal one. This organisation would experience its apogee in the next century with such distinguished texts as those legated by Luis Vives, Erasmus of Rotterdam and Luis de León. In this way, our article emphasises the practical component that derives from the instructions offered throughout the text, as well as the didactic strategies that the sender (a father) follows to efficiently convey the doctrine to his receivers (his daughters).Humanidade

Translating Esther into (judeo-) provençal between spirituality, biblical exegesis and linguistic investigation

The Book of Esther plays an extremely important role in Jewish tradition. It teaches how, with God’s help, it is possible that a catastrophic event, such as the evil plan devised by the minister Haman to destroy the Jewish people, can turn into a joyful event and reserve a happy ending. For this reason, in Jewish history, too often marked by persecution and marginalization, the events narrated in this biblical book became a fundamental model of thought and behavior, to give hope and comfort to the Jewish people. The memory of these events is renewed every year during the feast of Purim, whose central event is the reading of the Megillat-Ester (“the Book of Esther”). In Provence, in the first half of the fourteenth century, the theme of Esther began to receive particular attention. In this time and place, texts in Hebrew were composed, such as exegetical treatises, religious poems, parodies, and even Judeo- Provençal paraphrases of the biblical book. These paraphrases, in verse and rhyme, are literary elaborations composed to be recited during Purim. This contribution analyses the various possible renderings in Judeo-Provençal of Est. 1:1-6. These first versets, which describe the city of Susa and the banquets that the king prepared in the garden of his palace, have been widely commented on and interpreted differently: in fact, they are particularly difficult, due to the conciseness of the original and the abundance of rare and unclear terms. Through a comparative investigation of translation choices and sources, it is clear how these paraphrases, although created for a literary and performative intent, at the same time reflect the authors’ positions regarding the exegesis of the biblical text. Finally, the Provençal “Christian” translation of Est. 1:1-6, preserved in the ms. Paris, BNF, 2426 (15th century) is also presented. The comparison between versions coming from such different environments allows us to understand how translation is a process conditioned by the context of the translator, the message he wants to convey, and the tradition in which he/she recognizes himself. However, what inspired many texts (Christians and Jewish) on Esther in Provence between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, may also have been an identification between King Ahasuerus and his luxurious palace in the capital Susa, and the papal court of Avignon.Humanidade

[Reseña]. Conill Sancho, J. (2021). Nietzsche frente a Habermas. Genealogías de la razón. Madrid: Tecnos

    No full text
Nietzsche frente a Habermas.
