Brenden III
I go to a place looking for something but nothing in particular. It is a meeting. I bring myself and all of my things. Brenden waits for me there with all of its things. Between me and Brenden there opens a space of imagination and inspiration.
I emulate the act of tun building. To build a tun involves clearing a space for yourself, your tools and your belongings, and using the materials on and around your land to build what you need. What I do can be likened to experiential archaeology, except it’s not about interpretation. I pretend, reenact, reiterate, reverse engineer. Things and episodes I find in Brenden reoccur in my drawings and models, and take on new forms. Drawings and models inspire new drawings and models. The work branches out widely, and seems to reveal as much about me as it does about Brenden.submittedVersio
Hotel + Garden
The hotel and garden as imagined in this proposal are both a private shed and a public monument located between the city and the sea on the peninsula of port Alexandria, Egypt. From the interior, the hotel offers different views overlooking the city, the garden, and the restless waves of the Mediterranean. From the exterior, the building is perceived as a stamp with its strangely symmetric facade. The garden wall follows the existing traces of the place, with the quality of protecting, framing and leading. A carpet of local flora is spread in an irregular form, contemplated with freestanding chairs and a pavilion, intending to create a canvas for interaction between locals and tourists. Two gestures recalling echoes from the past become seeds for a new beginning.submittedVersio
Envelopes and exteriority: Local specificity and extended exterior as design criteria for architectural envelopes
This article discusses the relationship of architecture to its surrounding environment. The objective of the article is i) to reposition the relationship of architecture and its surrounding exterior by expanding the understanding of architectural envelopes, and ii) to systematically define exterior space as design input. The notion of the envelope encompasses a spatial recognition defined by interactions between interior and exterior environments that affects an inhabitant’s experience of architectural space. This research is organised in three sections: a) a literature review to systematically examine the terminologies of this research, b) selected case studies that consider exteriority as a design criterion, and c) research through design inquiry to combine a systematic approach with design thinking. The study applies both conceptual and method-oriented approaches to develop an integrated design approach focused on the climatic and atmospheric performances of architectural envelopes.publishedVersio
Fjord City Fire Station
This project is about investigating how a new fire station in Bjørvika can be close, visible and in harmony with the public.
Oslo Main Fire Station is today located in the area planned for a new Government Quarter, and therefore will be relocated out of the center of Oslo.
To guarantee the preparedness of the inner parts of Oslo there will be built a new central fire station on the fortress common in Bjørvika.
In general, the practically useful function and location of the fire stations built today has made them more isolated from the city than in the old days.
When the new fire station in Bjørvika is built, it will stand on a site that is visible, accessible and with a big impact on the cityscape. How the building is facing the city is as important as the building’s functions.
In this project there is done some changes in the existing road systems to meet the fire station’s placement, design and functionality. This makes the Fortress Common, a long continuous strip down to the waterfront. Freeing the plot for car traffic makes it easier for pedestrians walking down from the inner city to the harbour. The building is placed on the back of The Fortress Common, closing the last open space in a row of buildings towards the street. The car ports and the emergency space for the fire trucks is facing towards the harbour front. Beyond the space serving the fire trucks is a park going the whole way down to Salt, an art project, and the harbour promenade. The park is a buffer zone between Salt and the Fire emergency. It functions as an extension of Grev Wedel’s square, and is a place where the fire trucks can stand exposed, showing its presence to the public in the park.submittedVersio
Human-centered, collaborative, field-driven ship design : implementing field studies for the design of ships in operation
Current ship design processes have two main problems. First, the experiences of crew who operate ships are not included in the design process. This poses a problem because it limits the ability of ship designers to design ships and ship systems that can be safely and efficiently operated by the ship crew. This is important because design failures can lead to major accidents and inefficient operations. Second, collaboration between the different designers who participate in the process is not facilitated. This is a problem because it limits the ability of the participants to work across their respective disciplines. This is especially important in a complex and multidisciplinary process such as ship design.
Human-centred design methods can help address these two problems. Coming from the traditions of human factors and ergonomics, industrial, and interaction design, these methods deal with the participation and collaboration of all users of a design process. In particular, ethnography-based methods such as field study observation and analysis can inform the design of ships from the perspective of how ship crew operate them. Such a human-centred perspective contrasts with the technology-centred perspective that dominates the maritime industry. The objective of this research is to introduce human-centred methods that are collaborative and field-driven, to be used by industrial and interaction designers, maritime engineers, and human factors and ergonomics experts in ship design processes.
To integrate these methods, I work with the experimental introduction of human-centred methods in actual cases of ship design processes. I analyse the results in terms of what design activities were performed in the cases, and how they contributed to the ship design processes. To structure the analysis, I study the design activities that designers engage with during the design process. This experimental introduction of human-centred, collaborative, field-driven design methods in ship design processes results in the proposition of a design process that combines the human- and technology-centred perspectives and can be used for the design of ships and ship systems.
In addition, I propose a framework that guides the collaboration of maritime engineers, human factors and ergonomics experts, and industrial and interaction designers. These different types of designers have different design goals, specialisation and skills. Specifically, they have a different command and understanding of human-centred design methods. The proposed framework helps connecting different ways to work with human-centred design. It also helps connecting them with technology-centred design activities and data.
When experiencing and designing from the perspective of ship crew, ship designers can improve their ability to design ships and ship systems that are safe and efficient to operate. Further, the introduction of a human-centred perspective on ship operations gives ship designers the opportunity to focus on their own experience during the design process and improve how they collaborate with each other. As a result, the proposed process and framework have the potential to improve both the design process and its outcome.publishedVersio
Increased Use of Timber in New Buildings in Oslo and Akershus: Potentials and GHG Emission Effects
The choice of materials may play an important role in achieving the common European aims of near zero energy demand and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the lifecycle of buildings. The production of timber materials demands lower emissions than concrete and steel. To guide political and industrial priorities, it is vital to estimate the emission effects of increased use of timber. The article reports on a broad study that had the following aims:
1. To forecast the number, types, floor area, and location of new buildings that will be built in Oslo and Akershus counties between 2015 and 2030.
2. To estimate how many of these new buildings (a) will be and (b) could be built with timber as the main construction material.
3. To compare these timber potentials to the present and future availability of nationally and sustainably sourced and manufactured timber.
4. To estimate the effect on GHG emissions when substituting concrete and steel with timber in the production of new buildings in Oslo and Akershus counties between 2015 and 2030.
The research is based on official prognoses for population growth. They are combined with building predictions derived from municipal statistics and plans. A GHG reduction factor is extracted from existing studies of the effects of conversion to timber. This factor is used to estimate the GHG saving potentials of different scenarios for timber use.
Main results:
• The forecast of building numbers, categories, sizes and location is a useful tool when discussing environmental, urban, industrial and architectural strategies.
• Housing in 2–8 stories, not high-rise buildings, represents the biggest potential for increased use of timber in Norway.
• Scientific consensus is not established regarding timber buildings and emissions. Especially the effects of carbon storage in long-lived products and use of residues for biofuel substitutes fossil fuel are still debated. To convey an order of magnitude, the different emission-saving effects are separated.
• The estimates of GHG mitigation indicate that conversion to use of timber may have significant effects, but measures in the transport sector are more important for reaching the ambitious emission targets in Oslo and Akershus counties.
• To be robust, the argument for timber buildings must include the perspective of a green industrial shift based on renewable resources and innovative technology, design and architecture.
• The vicinity of Norway’s biggest and most rapidly growing market for timber buildings and the country’s largest forests and timber-based industries represents a unique opportunity for sustainable urban and regional development.

Current - Vrangfoss hydroelectric power station
The means of production of electricity is becoming more and more hidden away while its consumption and ubiquity is growing. This project aims to create a hydro station with a strong presence and clarity, mediating the forces and scale of nature, as well as the forces and scale of machines.
Vrangfoss hydroelectric power station sits within an existing natural and technological infrastructure for hydro electric power production, allowing for added output of electricity while lowering the impact on the local environment compared to developing an untouched site. The architecture of the dam and power house has a strong and clear presence and language, made possible by the existing stations and staff along the river. The building emphasizes the changes in scale in nature created by the shaping and facilitation of the landscape, and the changes in the forces of nature through the conversion of potential energy in the dam to the electrical energy fed out through the grid. FIXING SNEAKERS : a diploma in service design
My diploma is about sneakers and sustainability. Sustainability in the clothing and apparel industry is something I’ve been interested in for a long time. I chose to work with sneakers mainly because I saw that many have done service design projects on clothes and sustainability before but of all I have read I haven’t seen many projects that deal with the shoe part of that industry, especially not the sneakers and how we may consume them in a more sustainable way. I began preparing for my diploma by attending shoe making classes in Chile two years ago. I enrolled in a semester-long master’s program in product design where I focused on how to design a as sustainable sneaker as possible. In the summer, I worked closely with Repairable, a start-up specializing in clothing repair. Through mapping out their services and redesigning their website, I received an insider’s view on the repair culture in Oslo and gained some valuable contacts. I chose to focus on service design for my diploma thesis because I enjoyed working with the methods I learned during the service design semesters at AHO. I wanted to show how I personally use service design methodologies in my own work as I dedicate a full semester to a service design project for the first time. I’ve known for a while before I started that I wanted to pursue service design. I believe in prototyping services quickly and pushing my work outside the classroom as much as possible. I also wanted to create as many sketches and prototypes as I could, knowing that they wouldn’t be perfect and polished, but could offer me insight. This is because I believe that we can never know how our designs will work before we test it out in context with real, non-biased users.submittedVersio
Housing the Young - Old Løren Industry building
As life expectancy increases and people maintain good health longer we have a large group of the Young-Old, elderly freed from the responsibilities of adulthood and childhood, and largely unconstrained by physical and mental disabilities. Current requirements for healthcare will be demanding in the future both economical and with human resources. How can we make people live longer in their own homes and make community benefit from their life experience, knowledge and time?
The aim of the project has been to create housing in an existing building for the Young-Old that encourages social interaction between the residents. By planning in an urban area and including public spaces - the building can become a destination and thereby also integrate the elderly in the community.
The existing building at Økern, was a former industry building from 1958 with an extension on top from 1979. The footprint is 90 meters x 32 meters. The project takes away the re-usable parts of the extension, leaving the loadbearing structure. Using the existing rhythm and vertical communication of the building as guidelines, new housing was added on top in addition of transforming the existing office spaces. This resulted in 44 housing units, common areas and three flats either for students living with the elderly or as rental apartments for visitors. Between the new and the transformed area, there is a green area is made possible by the existing roof structure allowing enough earth for plants and smaller trees to grow. The openings down to the former industry halls, blocked of the extension of 1979, have been reopened some places to create a visual connection between living on top and the public functions planned beneath.submittedVersio
Contemporary Orchard Communities : A Counterproposal for Bang Prathun
The hydro-agricultural complex of the Chao Praya river delta has been heavily compromised and reduced through rapid and expansive urbanization over the last fifty years. This is reflected in the changes in Bangkok’s urban vernacular. While the historical local settlement typology accommodates and harvests the water excess of the monsoon cycles, the introduced contemporary residential typologies have rigid, socially fragmenting, and climatically inappropriate designs. The canal and orchard community exemplifies a settlement type characteristic of the Chao Praya river's west bank. This urban area is now being redeveloped into Western-style single family home tracts, and the Bang Prathun canal, too, is facing this scenario. This diploma project formulates a counterproposal to a projected development which will irreversibly destroy the historical Bang Prathun canal settlement’s structure and the cultural landscape of fruit orchards in which it is embedded. Can an alternative residential typology accommodate and thus preserve the agricultural landscape? Can the agricultural landscape, in its traditional form, be integrated as both recreational and productive area within a contemporary residential development? The project formulates two nested proposals: a Planning Strategy, which observes the historical footprint of the canal network, and a Housing Typology, which serves as a catalyst to fuse together, and revitalize the image of, the vernacular orchard typology and a contemporary housing project. The aim is to sustain the settlement’s original structure while making space for a contemporary dwelling, and to conserve the orchard as an important component of the infrastructural network of green spaces as floodwater absorbers, which in today’s Bangkok are critically few and far between.submittedVersio
