    FARM

    No full text
FARM is a rural story of a farmer and his sheep in the landscape. It is a story about submission, devotion and nature. The farm is located somewhere in the northern hemisphere, framed with pine woodlands, and the meadows. A shallow mountain river runs through the site, defining the two contrasting conditions: the cultivated landscape – and the wild outfields. The architectural intervention is a long, connected structure: the barn, the bridge and the house.submittedVersio

An addition to Grorud : architectural elements of Grorud as generator for a new wing of the Oslo Schools of Music and Performing Arts

Grorud as place is the architectural program of my diploma project. I will develop an architectural project that investigates and discusses how one adds to a given place. I see place as something in itself, containing all aspects of what relates to and participates in it. In built environment, architectural elements are contributers to what constitutes a specific place and the experience of it. In my diploma project, a sensual experience of Grorud will result in a chosen number of architectural elements from the place. These will be my startingpoints for my architectural study of Grorud as place, and as a generator for my addition to it. I will use the functional program Kulturskole (Oslo Schools for Music and Performing Arts) to inform the creation and development for a new building at Grorud.submittedVersio

    A Living Bridge

In the past few years there have been big discussions on the demolition of Nylandsveien bridge. Our project opposes the removal of the road bridge and wishes to demonstrate and exemplify the potential of the structure. The purpose of our project is to transform the bridge from a pure traffic machine to a real asset for the city. By allowing the structure to be inhabited by a variety of programs, people and activities, it enables the city to reclaim the road bridge and strengthen its relationship with it. Our project explores the potential of combining the vehicle bridge with programs that focus on mobility, commerce and the community. Grønland metro station is located underground close to our site. We have expanded and improved the existing metro station entrance underneath the bridge. The new metro entrance is a hybrid building that connects to the existing Riverside Youth Centre with an added cafe and community library. Many of the programs we have incorporated into our proposal are programs that currently exist on the site. Our project focuses on enhancing and improving these activities such as Stargate Pub, Riverside Youth Center, Grønland Paddle Club, Grønland Metro Station and businesses in Smalgangen. We want to encourage and preserve many of the programs and facilitate in joining them more together to create a more unified whole. This transforms the bridge city highway to a new public interior. Today the Nylandsveien bridge does not connect to the ground floor of Grønland in any way. We propose additional access points (ramps and staircases) up to the bridge level from several spots on the ground floor level so that pedestrians can have access to the road bridge. This increased access strengthens the potential of the bridge as a transportation vessel through the city while increasing mobility on many levels. Glass bricks have been used all over the district of Grønland and close to our site (Oslo Spektrum and Grønland Police Station). Our project aims to revitalise the use of this ma- terial in a modern interpretation. Glass brick is our material of choice because of the way brings light into the interior and exterior spaces, the material is able to curve and adapt to the curved and slanting of the existing bridge flyover and because the glass brick is able to accentuate and expose the cast in concrete columns and structure of the bridge in a way that we want to be visible from the outside as well as the inside.submittedVersio

    Ambiguous Border, Anterior Territory

The project investigates the Svinesund border crossing, which could be considered the most important Norwegian crossing in terms of logistics, complexity and history. Currently Svinesund is defined culturally by cross border consumerism, but the project reveals this crossing as a territory of forgotten historical value that continually fluctuates in character depending on the border condition at hand. Crisis and conflict are often the main factors that condition a border, together with the respective architecture that then occupies this space, such as the many forts that once controlled the area during Norways conflict with Sweden. As the border constantly changes, a border station is established in order to deal with extraordinary crisis situations that require large amounts of flexible space and different approaches related to the control of movement. If we recognise that these fluctuations peak and valley, then the station must be useful for other purposes when the border is not under significant strain. Therefore the typology of the plateau is utilised as an architecture that defines space without enclosing it. This architectural gesture appropriates the previous context of Hjelmkollen Fort, but with different intentions and on different terms. It takes advantage of the strategic point in the topography in order to establish a relationship with what one could call a landscape border that has territorial implications. The structure becomes a dialogue between landscape and form, which could be read as a direct reflection of what border architecture is. In a globalised world there is often a simultaneous need, and desire for more control and more freedom. The project there- fore poses the question as to whether an architecture can embody such a dichotomy?submittedVersio

A farm in the Sahara desert

Memory of a place A small place created by a family of farmers Buildings made from the dirt of the land Created for the purpose of utility and beauty Rooms for the family, spaces for work and rest Shelter for the animals Spaces where light was absent Changes in temperature and humidity A home in the eastern part of the Sahara in Egypt, not far from the river Nile – My great grandfathers dwelling Building on this memory I want to create a farm in the Sahara desert that respond to the place it exists and the people that build it. The project is a farm connected by a desert road near the Nile Valley. Every year villag-es around the Nile Valley experience that their agricultural land is being sacrificed for new settlements due to a steady growth in population. Over the years many have therefore started dreaming about moving to the desert where they can reclaim new land. I found a place at the South-Eastern part of my location where it seemed possible to create a structure spanning from one foot of a mountain to another. While this structure creates a strong border between the farmland and protects from the winds of the desert in the South. On the North, East and West side of the farm the surrounding mountains take this role. A long linear structure like this one, has two distinct sides. On the north side of the wall there will be a shadow and in the south the wall will absorb the heat of the sun. This can be utilized by the people inhabiting the structure, and for how the farm functions. This farm tries to make conscious decisions from the start, where the harsh environment of the desert guides the architectural decisions and how the place should be utilized and planned, while at the same time respecting architectural qualities that are deeply rooted in my childhood memory.submittedVersio

    Lifelong dwelling

The intention of the diploma is to reinvigorate the notion of dwelling by interpreting states of mind influenced by literature and translated through drawing and physical models. With the purpose of producing an architectural response to the programme of lifelong dwelling. The response has led to three separate dwellings. It is with the intention of bringing the effects of our physical surroundings to attention. It is about positioning myself in the dwellings. It deals with a dialogue between the dwellings and a pretended acquisition of a state of mind – in order to unravel the possibility of a continuous flow of states of mind through a lifelong living. It is with the intention of presenting a feasible dialogue between the dwellings and myself, here and now, one that is itself in perpetual motion. And by accepting the dialogue in motion, it leads to accepting a need for challenging architectural decisions in the discourse of lifelong dwelling.submittedVersio

    Sikt
