The development of us : how is technology shaping the way children develop?
No full textToday we see people walking down busy streets with their eyes glued to their phones. The unlimited amount of data at our fingertips and the screens they are on have changed how we act and treat the people around us. How will the relationships we have with our devices influence our development?
The development of us is a systems-oriented design and industrial design pro-ject aimed at seeking to understand these huge questions, to design a product that helps, per the research.
The result is called Dito. Designed to be a child’s first phone, Dito is a screenless voice-powered phone which serves as a starting point for a lifelong relation-ship with technology. It aims to turn a child’s attention away from screens and protect the bond between parent and child during a critical developing age.
Therefore, by influencing their early behavior with technology, the hope is that in the future, they’ll be more likely to connect with the people beside them, and not the devices surrounding them.
Dito’s forms represent a story-driven design. The circular body serves as a physical “OFF” switch for the device. It represents the control we should have over our technology. The rectangular form calls back to the core shape of any smartphone today. It houses Dito’s core features and acts as a recognizable profile they will see later in life. Lastly, the triangular body represents the 3 competing actors in an overarching damaged relationship; the parent, the child, and the technology.
Dito was created by studying the vast topics surrounding child development and technology with optimism. With a belief that while these topics are diffi-cult to answer outrightly, they are important to address none the less.submittedVersio
A Temporary Home for The National Theatre in Oslo
No full textThe National Theatre in Oslo is set to start refurbishment in 2022, which is expected to last for 5-6 years. While this goes on, The National Theatre needs another space to be.
The typical approach for this situation when another theatre can’t be rented is to build a tempo- rary building or tent. But in a city like Oslo, that is currently undergoing a lot of transformation that involves tearing down older buildings, could one of these buildings be adapted and get a second life as the temporary home for the National Theatre? And with this approach, could the project also act as a catalyst for a developing area?
The building I chose was Økern Senter, a closed down shopping mall and office in Økern, right in the future centre of Hovinbyen, Oslo’s largest development area. Økern Senter consists of an 18 story office tower, 3 two-storey “pavilions” and a subway stop “pavilion” connected by a glass covered indoor square. It all sits on top of a two storey parking garage and storage space.
In my project different functions are housed in the different pavilions, and the largest pavilion houses the main stage. The glass covered indoor square is the building’s main cir- culation area and lobby. Because of it’s great daylight qualities this space is also an open workshop space for the wardrobe, hair and props departments. This way part of the back of house functions are exposed to the audience and creates a better connection between theatre and audience. To make the main auditorium part of the building is torn down and opened up to get enough open space and so that different floors can be used as different balcony levels. Other parts of the building are used more as is. I imagine the project using a lot of recycled materials like plywood, OSB boards and construction timber.submittedVersio

To collect artefacts and naturally occurring phenomena, from a landscape in constant movement.
«To Behold» is a project that is based on my own urge to collect, order, contain and/or display. My intention for this work was to attempt a beholding of a landscape, or small fragments of it, by creating a dialogue between the collected and the made, the landscape and myself. Discovering how the collected and made relate to each other, long for each other or invite others in.
A large family of structures have grown out from this projects, 24 in total. The first 22 of them made in a 1:1 scale relates to the objects inside. Still the small structures invite the human inside to behold trough transparent surfaces and openings in the structures. The making of the structures became an acting with the landscape fragments. Discovering myself as a collector and as a maker of containers. Discovering the same landscape again and again in the processing of the collected.
Two of the structures relate to a larger scale, inviting the previous structures inside. Structures that are large enough for humans to visit as well as containing what is significantly insignificant. Structures that could allow the collected landscape fragments to travel further, as well as allowing the human to rest inside, just like the objects in the smaller structures. Beholding my own collection finding a home in the made, the simple structures tell of complex architectural issues explored in a number of spaces, containers or beholders.
I view the process of collecting, ordering and displaying as ongoing and expanding in many directions. The work consists of fragments of a landscape, and fragments of time, in time.submittedVersio

A house, for whom I do not know
Get PDFA house, for whom I do not know is my diploma-work.
It rests upon the initiative; ‘I want to make a house, for whom I do not know’, which expresses the want to make a house, and raises the question of for whom is the house made? The work is a desire to establish a way of thinking and a language for expressing myself through the medium of architecture. I want to place myself within the profession; to make a house, to find the words that make the house come about.
I have made many attempts at the house, they are presented in the book other houses The final attempt is in the book first house, last house. The work consists of object-houses, words, photographs, drawings. I consider the different medias as different ways to meander about in the landscape of personal desire, longing, fear and anxiety. I consider these meanderings to be the main work.
I long for a belonging. I don’t belong anywhere or to anyone, but I know belonging: I recognize belonging when it comes along. And from that belonging there comes a land or a landscape. Because longing and belonging for me seem to be intrinsically connected with looking out from the point of view of the house. Longing belongs to the house as it is in the land.
The issues are to me as personal as they are professional. Through this diploma-work I raise questions that I identify as equally important to the profession and the education of architecture, as they are to myself.submittedVersio

Through a continuous creation process called “One Week, One Chair” — a process where one chair is made every week for ten consecutive weeks — I explore different qualities of the chair in order to gain greater knowledge. The “One Week, One Chair” process and the insights it ac- cumulates builds the foundation for creating one last chair, which in itself materializes and demonstrates the findings that were made throughout the process. “A good chair” aims to tackle the complex task of creating a “good” chair by going in head first with a practice based research method and learning by doing mentality. Put a price tag on where your heart is
No full textElena WongNorwegian real estate industry is at its mature stage with well-developed law and regulations. Norway has the highest rate of home ownership compared to other countries in the Europe area. From our initial research, we see an imbalanced power dynamic in the buying process which makes buyers feel passive and powerless. If home buyers feel powerless and being pushed to make purchase decisions under stress, it is unlikely the decision would be rational and informed, and buyers are at risk of making the purchase that they would feel remorse about it later. We believe the current situation has to be changed and ideally the home buying system should consider the benefits and rights of both buying and selling sides. Our project goal is ‘by developing services that would support home buyers in their journey to home ownership, in hope to disrupt the existing power dynamic in the residential home buying system.’ We are proposing a new independent service -Husro, a home buying help service portal offering information, tools and services tailored towards home buyers’ needs. Our main service offerings including:
1. Husro Self-starter: A service portal gathers all scattered home buying content written by trusted actors on one platform, and ‘home buying tools’ that buyers can use for guiding themselves in home buying journey, thus better plan out their buying journey to be more prepared and confident in the buying process.
2. Husro Consultation: A service request portal helps home buyers identify their needs, so that we could bridge them with home buying consultation service providers.
Furthermore, we are proposing an awareness campaign in the near future scenario, aiming to shift the general thinking of the imbalanced power dynamic, together with a petition platform for home buyers to gather and express demand on radical change
