    Service design in the later phases : exploring user insights, handovers, and service design roadmapping in the transition from service concept to implemented service

    Human-centricity and user involvement have become increasingly emphasized in Norwegian legislation related to service development in the health and public sectors. At the same time, service design has emerged as a relevant and increasingly popular alternative to accommodate the requirements of user involvement. This article-based PhD thesis explores and contributes to how service designers’ processes and practices might be improved and supported in relation to the later phases of service design processes. The study is rooted in service design practice, and takes an expansive research through design approach. The main methods include participant observation in service development projects, interviews with service designers and clients, and design investigations with service design MA students and their external clients. Insights from these methods have been combined with theoretical perspectives in an iterative process to produce both practical and theoretical contributions. The study shows that thus far there has been an emphasis on the earlier phases of service development, both in service design research and practice, while the later phases have received less attention. Service designers are seldom involved in the later phases, and therefore a critical aspect of these phases is the final handover from service designers to the development team. Findings indicate a need for both an improvement in, and a harmonization of, service design handovers. One potential answer to this is embodied in what I call service design roadmapping, an approach explored and introduced in this thesis. While roadmapping is well-established in other disciplines, this is not the case in service design. The thesis contributes to a deeper understanding of the later phases through practical explorations and theoretical discussions of the phenomenon called user insight drift, the service design handover, and service design roadmapping. Service design roadmapping is a contribution to service design practice that can support service designers and their clients in the transition from a service concept to an implemented service.     A workshop

    The workshop balances between imagination, materials, technique, and craftsmanship, on the edge between reality, memory and something utopian. In a horizontal landscape embodied by stone and water lies the workshop for wooden boats. To set the stage for the workshop, a specific type of boat is selected, which gives scale to architectonic space, by its size and dimensions, spaces og production and specifications. A massive concrete platform is casted on site. It emerges as its own landscape, built up from the stones that represent the new ground. As the landscape slowly tilts downwards, the space of the platform holds a constant level and height. It runs through the building as both foundation and floor surface. Defined by the size of the boat, the platform is just wide enough to turn the boat, designed in the most practical and familiar way. There is seven spaces of the workshop. Exposed to the forces of weather, each space has its own atmosphere in spite of the same section. Spaces that lie over water will have different feelings than those on land. One experiences the spaces in a linear enfilade order of rooms, formed by function and creating different rhythms. The heart of what architecture in its highest - which may also be its simplest - forms, can achieve. They turn the simple experience of passing between walls or watching the way the light falls across a wall into space into daily events. The craftsmen co-exist with the material and frameworks during the production, parallel to appearing of the physical body of the boat. From the templates the shapes are measured and carved out in wood. Steamed and bent to fit their place. The spaces of the workshop alters as the body of work unfolds. As the boat is molded she is gradually exposed to the outside conditions of wind and water. At the end she will be launched by a crane that runs through the series of spaces, ending under the cantilevered roof above the sea. When the building of the boat is complete, the space is again empty, waiting for its new production. The spaces of the workshop are experienced dark and as introverted, with very little view to the outside. The light gets in through the deep openings in the roof. Light reflected from the water, is entering the space from bellow. This fact ambiguously conveys the feeling of the outside conditions into this introverted space. The wood is tarred and dark. The water goes back and forth, so that one can hear its sound. The roof becomes an instrument of the water, cultivating this part of the landscape in a particular way.     The perforated landscape : a study on contested prospects in Sápmi

    Mineral prospecting perforate landscapes both physically and discursively. Bringing landscape theory in conversation with critical cartography this monograph emphasis the landscape dimension in interrelated research fields discussing indigenous livelihoods, land rights and environmental governance. Methodologically the thesis adapts a counter prospective approach with an interative movement back and forth between ethnography inspired field studies and multimodal discourse analysis. It combines mapping, sketching, photography, records from qualitative interviews, participation and participatory observation with map analysis, document analysis, and media analysis to investigate and illustrate complex discourses. Pursuing the landscape dimensions of environmental conflicts, the empirical part of the study follows the Nussir copper mine prospect in West Finnmark from being an anticipated showcase in the Norwegian strategy for the mining industry, via drilling campaigns in reindeer calving grounds, to the environmental controversy of using Reppafjorden/ Riehpovuotna as a mining waste deposit. The author's encounters with Sámi reindeer pastoralists in the everyday landscapes of the Fiettar reindeer grazing district, mining prospectors, environmentalists, coastal fishers and residents are described as a learning experience in the Sámi outfield – the meahcci. The critical review of the findings brings together discussions on key topics such as the rhetoric of greenwashing and territorial governance, and the loss of pastures and autonomy in Sámi reindeer husbandry. It demonstrates the hegemony of the prospector politically and in the public discourse on landscape and how Sámi landscape relations have been overlooked in the landscape assessment undertaken by consultants. Further, it reveals how the definition of landscape of the European Landscape Convention has been modified and subverted in the landscape mapping of Norwegian environmental governance. Perforated landscapes draw attention to their own futures. Counter prospecting outlines the potential to engage with landscapes that exhibit contested trajectories by proposing alternative prospects. Discussing the hegemony of mineral and energy prospecting politically and in the public discourse, the thesis calls for prospective responsibility in landscape architecture to counteract the exclusion of Indigenous peoples' landscape relations in landscape management and design.publishedVersio

    I wish to promote Trondheim’s understanding and engagement of modern and contemporary art. I’m reusing the spaces of the former submarine bunker dora 2 in Trondheim. Inviting the public to experience a new type of exhibition space, archive and art atelier. Juxtaposing a former war machine with contemporary programs. A strong driving force for my project has been to investigate the architecture potential of this concrete monolith and how to activate the spaces. In my architectural attempt, I was treating it as an almost unsurmountable piece of nature, trying to detect its geology, topography, its weak points, and cracks, that would ensure the new life of structures in the city of Trondheim. The geometry and logic of my intervention is defined by the axial spaces of the bunker. I worked with two volumes “detached” from the existing walls, which define the spatial and structural idea of the pro- ject: The archive is a volume suspended from the roof, the exhibition spaces are freestanding volumes under the roof. The ateliers are on the roof, wrapping around the perimeter of the building and creates a generous garden in the center. Parallel to this, i wish for Dora 2 to just remain an immense monumental fortress and museum of its own, conserving everything that wars bring with, that people would never completely understand.submittedVersio

    Learning from the tree - The architecture of climbing

    This Diploma is a continuation and further understanding of my work in the Body & Space Morphologies: Catharsis - Acting and The Collective studio. The aim of the work has been to allow for a process to take place. A process driven by my (dis)ability to stay in the act, without the purpose for a final outcome, to master an act, to re-learn the craft of pure acting and pure play, to simply take part in that what I aimed to act with and within. The work started with the initiative “I want to climb a tree”. My intention was to rediscover - or discover for the first time -, the space that I can inhabit in the tree, and the space the tree inhabits in my world. Inspired by Plato’s quote that “trees and fields tell me nothing: men are my teachers” and Socrates’ quote that “the unexamined life is not worth living”, I have re-introduced the tree as the subject for myself (and others) to act with. Born and raised in the farmlands of Norway, I wanted to find out for myself what the tree could or could not teach me. The pure acting and the time spent in the tree, without any other purpose than the acting itself, provoked a looking at space that the tree contains and creates. A space discovered that was not perceived or imagined before. A literal architectural space, a phenomenal space and a social space. A space with certain properties and conditions that I will continue to seek out in conventional architecture too. Acting with tree(s) has become a personal journey. Being restless and anxious, I had to learn again to spend time with, come close to and care for the tree. After climbing the tree many times, I have not only become a master in the act of climbing trees, but I have gotten new knowledge in the ways of looking at, and perceiving of, the tree, the city, my rural home, architecture, nature and culture. “Today, too, I experienced something I hope to understand in a few days” 1 quote from the short film “The Perfect Human” (1967) by Jørgen LethsubmittedVersio

    Maritime industries are complex workplaces were human and environmental safety is crit-ical. Innovations in the field of Artifical Intelligence, wireless technology and robotics are enabling new ways to perform dangerous or repetitive tasks at sea without having people on-board. Small Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USV) can carry sensors in ways that before have been too expensive or risky with traditional methods and offer great advantages in data col-lection from our oceans. Gathering of knowledge and data over long periods of time is key to understanding our oceans and for a sustainable future. Through research, field studies, interviews, mapping and prototyping, I have explored and developed a proposal for a modular fleet control and data management tool for Unmanned Surface Vessels. In other words; a software for operators and marine researchers to plan and execute several unmanned missions at sea simultaneously, as well as tools for analysis and sharing of the ocean data collected. This software could be used in a multiscreen setup at a fixed shore control centre, onboard a mother ship or as a scaled down mobile version for field surveys.     Renew - Towards A Closed-Loop Architecture

    Enormous amounts of resources and energy go into the making of a building. When that building is taken away, an equally enormous amount is often irrevocably lost, regardless of whether or not those resources are still functional. With environmental limits being pushed or even exceeded, pressure is building to question the material status quo. Can we challenge the take-make- dispose economy by looking at a building slated for demolition not as a source of waste but as a material repository? Reuse in the building industry creates possibilities for reducing demand for virgin resources and minimizing waste. However, there is currently no well-established infrastructure for reused building materials. The proposed building is a reuse hub, a centralized location where architectural salvage is collected, processed, recertified and stored before being sold to the market. In addition, the reuse hub will function as a civic interface through a public workshop, experiential path and shopfloor. In doing so, the proposal aims to be a community engagement effort, increasing awareness around the circular economy and breaking down the cultural barriers facing reuse. As part of Hovinbyen, Oslo’s largest redevelopment project, the reuse hub aims to be both a practical, local measure for dealing with future waste and a commentary on urban renewal practices in general. The building lies it the northeast corner of Hovinbyen in a district called Haraldrud. The Oslo Municipality envisions, as with the rest of Hovinbyen, a dense urban fabric to arise here. It is hard, however, to imagine the Haraldrud of today fulfilling that role. Essentially, the area consists of two parts: a waste handling facility, including a waste-to-energy incinerator, surrounded by large industrial buildings and bulk goods providers. The reuse hub is intended to be a mediator between the waste handling facility and the future urban Haraldrud. The project is designed, where possible, with elements reused from a real-life demolition project. Gladengveien 8, a warehouse in the southwest of Hovinbyen, is analyzed closely, its building components cataloged and mapped. This forms the archive from which the new project will be designed. Arches from Gladengveien 8 form the primary structure, valued for their reusability, long span and carrier of a disappearing industrial identity. They are arranged in the reuse hub to form halls with different functions, sometimes overlapping to create zones of material dialog between the public sphere and areas of controlled access. Mezzanines delineate the halls horizontally, formed from prefabricated concrete elements reclaimed from the original Gladengveien 8. The hub is split down the middle by a path that is an extension of a proposed public thoroughfare running north-south through the site. In this way, along with the civic aspects of the program, the project engages with the public, offering a low-threshold opportunity for citizens to experience the inner workings of a new material economy - the circular economy. Although the building functions as a storage facility, the structure itself should be considered a material archive in its own right. Some elements are necessarily new, but all are designed with flexibility and disassembly in mind, facilitating further reuse at some point in the future.submittedVersio

    Contemporary facades commonly emphasize the separation of architecture from its local context by positioning them as support zones for various optimization demands or technical requirements. This dissertation rethinks the position of the façade as an inhabitable in-between space; a threshold that can be experienced; redefining it as the building envelope. The context-specific spatial potentials and qualities of the building envelope is thus discussed as a dynamic interface between the building, the climate, and the inhabitant. By providing an overview of the primary concepts and theories on of the building envelopes, overlooked atmospheric potentials and characteristics, and proposing a potential design approach, the research offers a comprehensive understanding of building envelopes that links the architectural thinking to its practice. The research’s taxonomy of envelopes and the mapping of specific concepts contributes to the field of research on location-specific buildings by facilitating the identification of various design problems and how they can be approached.publishedVersio
