A students life: Seclusion and social interacting in the scenery of Seiersborg Tesktilfabrikk
In recent years, transformation has become an important and urgent issue. Not only is it environmentally valuable, but it also creates exciting and innovative architecture. When an area is vacated or a building is no longer in use, it is our job to see the potentials, and fill it with new content.
My diploma addresses the meeting point between an existing structure and a possible new program. Can the existing structure withstand the pressure of a given, new program and will the new program benefit from the flexibility that is provided by the existing structure?
Seiersborg Tekstilfabrikk is situated in Fredrikstad city centre and is conveying the history of one of Fredrikstads most important industries, the TEKO-industry. It was constructed in 1917 and later on sold to Sandvika Veveri in 1990 which is interesting with transition in mind.
Today, Seiersborg is one of the area’s most characteristic industrial buildings with an interest in conservation. The conservation value does not lie in pure conservation, but more in a positive reuse concerning the original structure.
My initial interest is to challenge the industrial structure with a new program, and reuse with the restraints and potentials of Seiersborg Tekstilfabrikk.
My proposal is a student community where students can both live or meet. In addition to offering innovative student housing that challenges the well-known student housing structure, it also provides shared functions that are available to students not living in Seiersborg Studentbolig.
The project consists of 6 neighborhoods with a total of 46 dorms and 76 beds. All neighbourhoods have a kitchen for sharing between 4-7 dorms. The shared space occurs in the negative space between the neighborhoods together with circulation.
My proposal also invites students living nearby to a cafe/bar and a health center. Due to the poor offer of habitation to the students in Fredrikstad, I believe offering a place where students can meet besides school will play an important role in the student’s life.
I aim to offer students in different stages of life good living conditions with the possibility to socialize, but also to withdraw to seclusion. To achieve this, I work with several levels of privacy. The dormitory represents the most private part, together with the shared kitchen. To highlight this, it’s lifted 50 cm above ground, and creates a physical barrier. Every dormitory gets its private stoep, and the void be- neath is dedicated to storage for the students and their private belongings.
The architectural design is based on the existing structural logic of the building, yet great care has been taken to avoid nostalgic glorification. The proposal strives to create a full spectrum of zones from private to public, from the loud and messy to the quiet and tranquil.
The structural system has already shown its ability to adapt itself to new uses, and with small adjustments it proves that there is a lot of inherent potential in an old industrial building, and that Seiersborg Tekstilfabrikk can get a completely new area of use and can live further for many new years through an environmental perspective.
I also believe that if the need for student housing should decrease, the project would work just as fine as a co-living project, or, maybe any other program if the right deciscions is being made.submittedVersio
Midlertidig og langsiktig utvikling : muligheter for Romsås senter
Byutvikling i dag skjer i stor grad gjennom revitalisering og transformasjon av allerede utbygde byområder. Overgangen til å planlegge i områder hvor det finnes fysiske strukturer og nettverk av ulike aktører fra før av har gitt behov for en mer strategisk tilnærming. Kombinert med faktorer som økonomiske nedgangstider har denne overgangen også ført til økt bruk av midlertidighet som strategisk og taktisk virkemiddel. Men selv om temporær bruk har fått større plass i byutvikling og byteori er det behov for mer kunnskap om hvordan midlertidig aktivitet kan påvirke langsiktige planer. Temaet for denne oppgaven er hvordan midlertidig aktivisering kan bidra til bærekraftig utvikling. Jeg tar utgangspunkt i Romsås senter, et nærsenter i drabantbyen Romsås. Som del av Groruddalssatsingen 2017-2026 gjennomfører Oslo kommune et områdeløft på Romsås - en ekstraordinær innsats for å styrke nærmiljøet. Samtidig er en mer langsiktig arealutvikling på trappene. Senterområdet ligger inne i kommuneplanen for Oslo som utviklingsområde i ytre by. Romsås senter oppleves som et utrygt sted og en negativ belastning på nærmiljøet. Det er på grunn av sammensatte utfordringer med både sosialt liv og fysisk form. En komplisert eierstruktur legger begrensninger på bruk og utvikling. Disse egenskapene ved senteret gjør det nødvendig med en strategisk tilnærming for å få til endringer. Ved å se på teorier om taktikk, strategi og midlertidighet i byrom gir denne oppgaven et grunnlag for hvordan Oslo kommune og andre aktører kan jobbe med utvikling av senteret basert på lokale behov. Ut fra en analyse av fysiske og sosiale sider ved senteret har jeg skilt ut fire hovedtemaer som både utfordringer og anbefalinger knyttes til: Senteret som møteplass, trygghet og tilgjengelighet, kommunale boliger og senterets eierskap. For å arbeide med disse temaene anbefaler jeg at Oslo kommune tar en aktiv rolle, både gjennom strategisk bruk av kommunens eget mulighetsrom og som tilrettelegger for taktisk, midlertidig aktivitet. Strategi og taktikk er begreper som kan brukes til å diskutere makt og roller i byutviklingen. Begrepene kan også brukes til å beskrive med et metodeperspektiv hvordan midlertidighet brukes i byplanlegging. Begge disse innfallsvinklene er viktige for å forstå overgangen fra temporær til langsiktig bruk bedre, og begge perspektivene må være med for å komme nærmere en utvikling av Romsås senter som styrker lokalsamfunnet.submittedVersio
Learning for future knowing now : investigating transformative pedagogic processes within a design faculty in a South African university of technology
Design educators working in higher education institutions face the enduring challenge of translating creative design practice into pedagogy and curricula that prepare students for entry into the world of work. This not only entails keeping up with current and given modes of designing but also requires critical attention to how the practice and discipline of designing, with its material and increasingly immaterial outcomes, are shaping and being shaped by a fast-paced, complex and connected world. This includes how design practice, education, and research have progressively moved from linear views of designing as problem-solving to include more collaborative platforms and approaches. Design courses need flexible curricula and dynamic pedagogical approaches to address and respond to such flux, the changing needs of society and, importantly, the role of sustainable design concerning the current climate crisis.
In this thesis, I take up the question of how design educators can actively explore different approaches to design pedagogy that might enable a transition for design education towards longterm sustainability. Such transition includes a critical review of how and where design learning might be carried out, so as to break with hegemonic orthodoxies in design practice, its education, and in broader society. Consequently, this thesis is a practice-based inquiry into the need to shape design curricular and pedagogical activities to meet future work and professional practice as well as the burgeoning fields of design for sustainability and social innovation in an unsustainable world.
In the case of this study in a South African university of technology (UoT) environment, student designers need to learn how to work with complex settings such as designing for developing world issues in contexts of heightened socioeconomic and political inequality, and the changing demands and needs of clients, communities and policy, to mention a few. In shaping and connecting suitable and productive relations between design practice and design pedagogy, this study investigates currently ill-defined literacies and learning that might be appropriate for these domains of design and their emergent impact. As such, this thesis brings to the fore the ‘relearning’ taking place in a South African UoT through experimental pedagogy at the crossroads of design, sociocultural learning theory, and critical posthuman perspectives.
The key research question that is addressed in this study is: How might current design pedagogy transition toward emerging and complex contexts through curricular experimentation that is oriented towards sustainable futures by design? The study is conducted as participatory action research and is practice-based with a focus on a participatory mode of pedagogical praxis. Consequently, the study comprises an inquiry into a range of design project-cases over five years that aimed to enhance learning practices, resources, and reflections as part of a wider pedagogical shift toward learning about sustainable design in the context of climate change.
The main contribution of this study is a pedagogical framework that comprises a set of mutually reinforcing modalities and navigational principles for design education in a transitioning reorientation towards long-term sustainable design practice. This study may resonate with and provide useful insights for designer-educator-researchers who are engaged in transitioning their pedagogy away from the dominant market-driven paradigm that continues to inflect design education and practice.publishedVersio
Hukodden Sjøbad - Rejuvenating a historical bath house on Bygdøy
On the southern tip on the peninsula Bygdøy, at one of Oslo’s most popular bathing sites lies a small building known as Hukodden Strandrestaurant (Hukodden Beach Restaurant). From being a highly popular place to visit, it has degraded over the years leaving it totally empty and abandoned since 2018. The only reason for this is not just the worn materials and lack of refurbishing, but the fact that the building was originally designed as a private bath house, not a restaurant. It was built for Vidkun Quisling in 1941, during the occupation of Norway. This is the main reason for its yellow listing, which makes it difficult to optimize the volume for restaurant operations.
I decided to go back to the origin and transform it into a bath house again, only now a public one. Firstly, that meant clearing away all small extensions and modifications done over the years as a restaurant, ending up with the original volume and scheme. In relation to the listing and also my own value assessment, I wanted to preserve the expression and most of its elements, but in order to make the program public some alterations had to be made. Two new entrances are added, some of the existing windows with characteristic arches are implemented in new doors and the inner walls are all new to fit public toilets, changing rooms, showers, lockers and a new café. The sundeck opening up to the views of the Oslofjord and partly surrounded by arched rows of columns is given a natural saltwater pool, enhancing the new bath house program.
As an extension to the bath house, a new jetty is formed along the rough rocks to the West. In addition to more area for sun- and sea-bathing, it has a jumping tower, kayak rental and a sauna. All this will give the former bath house and its surroundings new life.submittedVersio

In November 2019, Larvik library sustained heavy damage in a fire. My task investigates the potential of a new library on the existing site.
Larvik is a town and a municipality on the southeast coast of Norway. The town has 25 000 inhabitants. With the old library in ruins, Larvik faces the question of what their next library can be.
It is important to distinguish Larvik as a town and not a city. Suburban, urban and natural elements are weaved together. The town can be read as a hybrid typology that mixes these qualities rather than committing to one.
In Larvik specifically, three elements characterise the town: the house, the terrain and the vegetation. The project investigates how these elements can be incorporated into a library that emphasizes the character of Larvik.submittedVersio
DROSS.
Dross is a by-product of the aluminium smelting process. During the smelting all the solid impurities float to the top creating a protecting cover on the molten aluminium. This is called dross and this project aim to explore how to map out and communicate the uses of this combination of impurities as one material. This project was initiated out of my interest in material exploration. Having done several projects on conventional materials prior to this I wanted to investigate a lesser- known material to see how my customary methods of exploration could be applied and how to adapt to achieve a successful result.
As this is the first attempt to consider the value of aluminium dross there were little to no information about how to work with it. Throughout the five months of this project, I discovered nine textures, made three objects out of the material that serve as a representation of the potential of aluminium dross and a handbook for how it can be explored further.submittedVersio
Stresstesting av blågrønn faktor på utvalgte casestudier i Bærum kommune
Rapporten Mot en blågrønn eiendomsutvikling? - Stresstesting av Blågrønn Faktor på utvalgte case studier i Bærum kommune evaluerer bruk av verktøyet «blågrønn faktor» (BGF), som skal fremme blågrønne kvaliteter i eiendomsutviklingen. Rapporten er basert på 7 case-studier av ulike utviklingsområder i Bærum, valgt ut i samarbeid Bærum kommune, juli 2018.
BGF brukes av flere kommuner som frivillig norm eller krav til bla- og grønnstruktur i byggesaker og på prosjektnivå. I denne studien undersøker vi hvorvidt BGF også kan anvendes på områdenivå som del av en bredere kartlegging- og evalueringsstrategi knyttet til planlegging, og etablering av økosystemregnskap for byer. Malet for studien var å kartlegge styrker og svakheter ved BGF som metode, og diskuterte fordeler, ulemper og mulige utviklingspotensialer for BGF som verktøy på plannivå for fremtiden. Dette innebar en «stresstesting» av BGF verktøyet på ulike tomteområder både før, under og etter utvikling/bruksendring hadde funnet sted. Med «stresstesting» menes utprøving av metoden også utenfor bruksomradene BGF er designet for.
Rapporten anerkjenner verdien av en målbasert, standardisert og enkel kvantifisering av blågrønn struktur i byggesaker, ikke minst med tanke på vannhandtering. Det er også stor aksept for at skjemaet favoriserer brukervennlighet over kompleksitet, selv om dette også medfører en høy grad av forenkling. Men nettopp fordi BGF er et robust verktøy for sikring av blågrønne kvaliteter, argumenteres det for at den også har potensial for en utvidet og mer fleksibel bruk i plan- og kartleggingsprosesser, sa vel som i konseptualisering- og prosjekteringsfasen.
Gjennom analyse av bade kartleggingsverktøyet BGF-QGIS, BGF-metodikken samt funn gjort på tomtene, ble det identifisert syv overordnede problemstillinger. Spørsmalene som arbeidet reiser kan være relevante i diskusjonen knyttet til fremtidig bruk, revisjon og utvikling av Blågrønn Faktor i norske kommuner, og som innspill til standardisering av BGF i Norge.acceptedVersio
VELFERDSSTATENS ANSIKTER : En tilnærming til arbeidsmiljø og endring internt i NAV gjennom system- og tjenestedesign.
Velferdsstatens ansikter er et prosjekt om ansattes opplevelser gjennom endring internt i NAV. Prosjektet utforsker hvordan økt fokus på arbeidsmiljø og god implementering av endring kan hjelpe NAV i møtet med fremtidige utfordringer. Måten NAV organiserer og implementerer endring i dag er ikke optimal, og har stor negativ innvirkning på arbeidsmiljøet og ansattes opplevelser. Velferdstatens ansikter utforsker derfor en alternativ løsning for organisering og implementering av arbeidsmiljøtiltak og endring.
Prosjektet setter i gang felles rutiner, aktiviteter og verktøy for å bygge en bedre forståelse av internt arbedsmiljø og et godt handlingsrom for endring og tiltak som treffer ansattes behov. Tjenesten skal gi ansatte trygge rammer for endringsprosesser, uttrykke tillit og respekt for ansattes erfaring og opplevelser, og bygge en

Made in Oslo - A Production School in Brenneriveien
Thesis - We want to reintroduce production as a vital part in the daily life vof Oslo. Our task is to create a production school that combines production and education.
In Oslo, soaring housing prices are causing new urban development to consist of mainly mono-functional residential areas.This one-dimensional focus is in stark contrast to the vital and often chaotic lure of cities. These new norms of urban development are also a fundamental threat to our cities productiveness and competitiveness. In 2020, urban industry tends to be a facet of city life most conveniently forgotten.
In order to reintroduce manufacturing into the city, we have settled on creating a production school in central Oslo. A production school is an alternative to conventional upper secondary education. The school’s target group are young students between the ages of 16 and 25 that have dropped out of either vocational or study-related education programs. Many of these teenagers need motivation and guidance to find a new way into either continued education or work. As a result of the public nature of the production school, it has been a central task to investigate how new public programs can be incorporated into the existing structure. The the building is organized as a sequence of public spaces along a walkway, perforating and winding around
the central core.
We have chosen Brenneriveien 11 along River Akerselva as the site of the school. As with most urban rivers, the banks were sites of heavy industrialization in the late 19th century. Unlike the great Rhine or the Mersey, Akerselva is narrow and winding, with violent falls and strong currents. This feature of physical geography made the river unsuitable for transport of goods. Thus,
the industrial buildings does create a barrier protecting the tranquil river form the busy city surrounding it.
The main challenges of this project have been to distribute the daylight into these deep volumes, and provide spaces suited for a new mode of production. Simultaneously, we are aiming to transform an anonymous warehouse into a playful space, where the productive and recreational city intersects.submittedVersio
