    Can we save our saviours?

This thesis takes a closer look at volunteer trips, particularly those where a European travels to an African country. Many travel on the premiss that they are going to save someone, with different levels of the white saviour complex. This mentality is dangerous because it takes the power away from communities to resolve the situation in a way they deem appropriate. Can we save these saviours from making more situations that need saving? I have gathered information about this topic through in-depth interviews, contextual interviews and observational studies in Norway and Tanzania. These methods thought me that critical self reflection could be one key to unlocking an understanding in a way that leaves room for more integrity and better directed help. Inspired by card games and service design tools I would like to present you with “3 scenarios”. A self reflective card game designed to help better prepare volunteers travelling abroad. Shuffle the deck of cards, pick out three possible scenarios for your up coming trip and use the guidebook for questions related to your cards. Each card focuses on one topic and bright colours reflect the lighthearted manner of this approach. Although lighthearted it has the potential to greatly impact the volunteers journey. Having the right expectations will make the trip feel safer and increase the ability to contribute to the workspace. These cards are a direct result of the interviews and observational studies I conducted and are meant to be used by volunteers for volunteers. The goal is not to point a finger or demand the correct answer. The cards are there to help the volunteer gain a better understanding of a possible scenario. As an interactive tool, the card game could foster more reflection then being asked questions on the spot. Their visual manner encourages a more playful experience which might lessen the fear of having to give a “correct” answer and open up for deeper reflection. So for the big question: Can we save our saviours? Short answer, no. But we can assist them in saving themselves. Setting the right expecations creates a mindful awareness of the situation at hand. So although the 3 scenarios game will not burn down the white saviour complex it could be the spark that starts the fire.submittedVersio

Rethinking social Encouraging Meaningful Digital Encounters

Re:Thinking Social is an explorative interaction design project aiming to nuance the discussion around social media and its future potential through ways of being social. We look into how we can improve the polarisation online through encouraging meaningful digital encounters and facilitating for being different kinds of users. Through looking into polarisation, we ended up nuancing a lot of the discussions regarding social media. The project reflects around social media, while simultaneously suggesting possibilities for improving polarisation through exploring what being social online could mean. Polarisation online is a hot topic today as it has become an issue and threat to peoples humanity and democracy. We started looking into this topic and how design could contribute to it. We decided to focus on the ‘social’ of social media, and less on the ‘media’ part, so we went deeper into what “being social” could mean. Through our research and findings we had a theory that engaging more people in their digital community would lead to a stronger sense of belonging, and a will to create a trusting digital environment. And through this, possibly decrease polarisation. We explored how different ways of being social and facilitating for different kinds of users could help people to better understand, trust and connect with their digital neighbour. Our final proposals aim to explore possibilities that show our findings through digital prototypes. We explore three concepts with three directions each. The first concept, The Human Side, explores how showing more personality of a user can create more trust in a digital community. The second concept, Changing Engagement, explores how we can elevate other ways of engaging online. And finally, the third concept, Tools for Gardeners, explores implementing tools online for being a “gardener” - a caretaker for your digital community.submittedVersio

    Overmoden jord

Krigen i Ukraina påvirket oss like etter.

Kárášjoga Mánáidskuvla : School and cultural arena in Karasjok

Kárášjoga Mánáidskuvla explores the role of a small primary school in a rural area, and specifically in a Sámi context. In my Pre-Diploma I refer to four different ways to understand architecture in Sápmi; The Typological, The Analogical, The Rhetorical, and The Pragmatic. This project explores the pragmatic, steering away from the analogical and typological image of Sápmi, creating a building not trying to mimic Sámi vernacular architecture, but rather a building true to function and use. Karasjok municipality is well underway of planning a big center development. The needs of the municipality include a new school, health centre, emergency central, and a building for technical services. The new primary school acts as a catalyst to invigorate the community, first insuring a good foundation for families and the community as a whole. This is a first step towards pulling the village center toward the terrace edge overlooking the river. The school has a rather large footprint for the number of pupils, at 2675 kvm and only about 140 pupils. However, in addition to classrooms, the school offers specialized rooms for traditional Sámi arts and crafts, food preparation and preservation, a public library, and a dedicated stage for music, theatre and cinema. These spaces are shared with the general public, as well as the neighbouring secondary school. Combining the school with complementing cultural programs, makes the cultural arenas less vulnerable. The new school fortifies and facilitates for existing culture and meeting grounds, from the Easter festival, to the knowledge transfer between generations. To deal with the low temperature in Karasjok, I use unclimatized rooms to the north to act as an isolation buffer. Conservatories placed at some south facing rooms to maximize the suns heating capabilities, to be able to expand the school’s footprint as early in the year as possible. In the Sámi courtyard everything is on display; food production, maintenance of equipment, storage for materials, cars, and animals. The isolation buffer works in the same way, and deals with both climactic and functional at the same time; the facades is either a working display that supports the activities within the building, or holds items to support outdoor activities. Kárášjoga Mánáidskuvla is a place to teach and learn. A place to gather for the two national days on the 6th of February and the 17th of May, and get expert help to adjust the shawl just so. A place to roast reindeer meat between heats during the Easter festival snowmobile cross. A place to celebrate weddings, birthdays, confirmations, and the return of the sun.submittedVersio
