    Reviving Imslandshús

    Seyðisfjörður, originally a fishermen town, is now home to art, historical buildings– timber houses (Norwegian heritage)– and a ferry from the main land (Denmark). A big part of the town’s identity is comprised of the historical wooden buildings. Whether originally shipped from Norway, or designed and built based on inspiration from the Norwegian traditional architecture- more than 30 buildings are listed in The Cultural Heritage Agency of Iceland. Imslandshús is one of them. Imslandshús is owned by an international couple - from the United States and Denmark. Jonathan moved to Iceland from the US to experiment with Icelandic-Japanese fusion cuisine, while Ida was a practicing art student at the local art school, LungA. The wooden structure of the main part of the building was shipped from the Stavanger, Norway. A building with such an interesting story to tell has the potential to become a new, unique space, on the Seyðisfjörður map. The task is to propose a solution for a flexible space and create a place that not only serves the local community, but also provides short term and long-term accommodation for chefs, to allow for them to experiment with food and share their knowledge with one another. My vision for this place was to keep the original atmosphere and hear the story that the space tells its guests - valuing the imperfections, highlighting the historical parts, recreating some of moments in time, and framing the landscape views. The modern interventions to this space will function as articulations of the original structure and create a journey through the building where we can find functional spaces along the way.submittedVersio

    Seclusion and openness - laboratory in an urban setting

    The last months have shown us how vulnerable we are. This vulnerability brings fear and distrust to society, especially when we walk on an unknown field. Whenever highly specialized companies and institutions like research centers or big pharmaceutical companies are the epicenters of the solution this can raise doubts about their actions. So, it is clear that there is a problem with public trust. Even in a world with great accessibility to knowledge and based on a constant exchange of knowledge, the confidential nature of these institutions is the main factor of distrust, being radically closed towards society. Seclusion and openness - and the multiple possibilities behind the juxtaposition of these contrasting space characteristics are in the center of my project. This includes not only an introduction of the public matter into a scientific building but also an introduction of the research facility in the urban tissue and the effect it has on the city. Following this narrative, the site was strategically chosen where the clusters of the housing development and the industry meet, located in the city of Basel, Switzerland. With well-developed connections both to the road, railway, and water transportation infrastructure, the site is fully accessible by a large network of public transport. The laboratory building is dedicated to the life sciences, more precisely to the genomics and biotechnology field. This area’s development has a direct impact on our lives as individuals and society. The gesture of placing a research facility open to the public in the middle of the city, among other public programs, will encourage a better understanding and increased engagement of the society in the topic The building has incorporated a public loop, as an extension of the city. As part of the concept of openness, a public promenade is proposed, composed of multiple spaces distributed on different levels that are visually open to areas never seen before by the external community. Bringing the public and the society to the center of the action, but still providing with necessary privacy of the researchers. An important part of the process was to not only challenge current tendencies and introduce new qualities but also to keep the pragmatism of the building typology.     A house where my father and I can meet

    I met my father in his workshop, in a situation of daily life : dwelling and working. A meeting that enabled me to learn and engage in a craft. As I now have moved out of my childhood home, craft, knowing and knowledge is what I bring with me. Entitled “A house where my father and I can meet”, this diploma is an experimental research where I focus on the memories I have from my upbringing and use them to generate new architectural realities. Each chosen situation from the past generated a memory. Each memory is presently materialized into a physical model, called fragment. All fragments put together aim to create an hypothetical house, where a meeting between my father and I can happen again. In this process, the hand and the head act as a bridge between the past - memories - and the future - articulated fragments. Along with this notion is a wish for a generosity of space that enables one to work and dwell. This diploma therefore drives a personal search for the possibilities to work as a way of dwelling and sets the stage for my own maturing. It aims to further develop my craft, knowing and knowledge1 with the intuitive method of working that my father introduced me to in my upbringing. Embedded in it are the exchange of knowing and the possibility to develop oneself through the creative act.     Assembly - a marine cluster in Austevoll

    Assembly: defined by a group of people/things/resources gathered in one place for a common purpose. The project addresses a cluster of research, education and tourism to introduce and highlight the importance of the blue-green industry as a vital part of a sustainable future. The project seeks to find an interpretation of collaboration between housing, culture and commercials as a program, and prefabrication as a construction method. By utilizing their common needs, we envisage that the project will be linked together through professional interests and through the common use of space. This approach allows overlapping of various activities, which translates into a higher usage rate. In order to search for sustainable construction methods, the project studies prefabrication systems. The project is split into two nodes as a result the program. The commercial and public part of the project, innovation- and visitor center, is gathered in one point on the east side of the island with good access to existing infrastructure, public transport and the possibility of a quay for larger boats. In contrast to the innovation- and visitor center which is located towards a fjord, the resort and the folk high schools housing are located at the western end of the island. This is parts of the project that seeks privacy for the rest of the facility and is located 450 meters from the eastern node. Here, the student housing gets protection of the forest and the resort full nature-experience right in front of the ocean. As a study, prefabricated constructions became a vital part of the project. The diploma suggest that prefabrication can lead to both a more environmentally friendly construction site with waste reduction, and easier maintenance with replaceable parts. In addition, it will be beneficial in such a project that takes place off the mainland with no major materials retailers immediately close by. The project consists of four module-based constructions and systems in different scales within prefabricated wooden structures; containers, CLT elements, glulam frames and prefabricated stud-construction. These are based on the size of the building and where the buildings are located on the plot topographically. The buildings have been designed based on sizes and shapes based on the construction method as parameters. The commercial and public part of the project is gathered in one point. The area consists of public outdoor space, offices, a research hall, gymnasium, auditorium, exhibition area, cafeteria and educational areas. The eastern point has access to public transport and the possibility of a quay for larger boats. This node contains housing and a resort. The area consists of boarding schools, common areas for students, dormitories for visiting researchers, a restaurant, canteen, hotel rooms and landscape cabins. Here they get a privacy from the rest of the facility and the resort comes with a view.submittedVersio

Imagine a society where sharing products is more convenient than owning. Imagine driving to a DNT cabin with no luggage, being met with an outdoor set of your preference. No responsibility, storage, or maintenance knowing that Bergans is being responsible for you. Project FRAM is a step in that direction. Making outdoor products shareable is possible but it requires great service, business, and industrial design strategies.     The porus landscape

    A man-made landscape with porous qualities that create multi-purpose spaces to contribute to relieving the storm flood in Santa Marta, Colombia, a city where storm floods represent 65% of risk events every year The project objective is to connect the blue and green structures in the city to use storm-water as a creator of new dynamics. By transforming the city into a sponge, with a decentralized system. Stormwater is managed locally on-site, creating new recreational areas in an adaptive landscape that gives identity, and creates new ecosystems not only use for humans but also for other species. Designed to passively absorb, clean, and use rainwater, allowing the natural flow of the water through permeable surfaces. Using runoff reduction elements to stop the water before it arrives at the most affected flooding areas in the city. The park integrates into the porous city network, its objective is to be a multipurpose space, to create recreational spaces, and at the same time to regulate water. The inflow comes from the stream running from the hill at the east, the water flows through terraces with native submerged aquatics and emerging plants from the wet ground that clean the water before it arrives at the wet basin. In moments of high floods, the system increases its flooding capacity with a combination of dry and wet basins. Dry basins work as sports fields in dry conditions, in addition, 80% of the park is located 0.20 m lower than the pedestrian ecotone, which allows shallow flood in the whole area in an extreme flood event. A pedestrian bridge connects the ecotone and allows the normal flow of people, even when the whole park is under an extreme flood condition. The location of the planting is defined by a series of grids, that look for a geometrical connection, relation, and tension with the urban fabric, the natural flow of the people, and the natural flow of the water. At access plazas, the vegetation continues with the diagonality connecting with the principal people flow. At the border, the planting is related to the immediate context. On the east side, the vegetation recognizes the flow of the water and makes it evident with the strips of vegetation that let the water go in between. A series of plants between emerging, submerged and flooring has been selected on a color range of green with purple flowering. These plants are located along with the permanent water bodies and have been chosen for their ability to clean the water of heavy minerals, they filter the water before it arrives at the basin and performs well even when the storm-water has been mixed with the sewage water. The project recognizes the need of creating spaces not only for humans but also for animals, spaces that understand and highlight the natural working of the world.submittedVersio

    Making the abstracted space through works and words

    Becoming with Architecture: Making the abstracted space through works and words Can spatial structure and material properties have capacity to radiate and intertwine in an architectural space? How can this radiant spatial entity be perceived and how can its accessibility be described? Can this space be understood as a material, an additional spatial layer to the built structure? The PhD thesis “Becoming with Architecture” explores the circumstances that condition the sensual experience of architecture. The investigation is theoretically framed by phenomenological theories of architecture as well as philosophy in the field of new materialism, so-called object ontologies, and theories of becoming. I argue that by recognising the autonomous space, by acknowledging the presence of structure, materials and things and that which radiates from them allows for becoming with the others, and thus provides the access to this radiant spatial entity. I have chosen to name this spatial entity “the abstracted space”, building on several understandings of the term ‘abstraction’. In brief, I understand that what is abstracted, in an architectural context, as the radiance of material, in other words, that which all material emits in the architectural space. The term ‘abstract’ is not understood as the immaterial as opposed to the material, but as another material; the space in which we all exist at the same time and the space that enables us to become one with architecture. In addition to an essay discussing architectural theory, the research questions are investigated through the practice of making consisting of architectural photography, experimental model making, architectural drawings, and paintings related to the three case studies: Neue Nationalgalerie (1968), Berlin, by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art (2004), Kanazawa, by Kazuyo Sejima+Ryue Nishizawa/ SANAA, and Casa del Fascio (1936), Como, by Giuseppe Terragni. I have not strived to arrive at a conclusive definition but to bring to light the processual and performative nature of architecture, and how architects can perceive, describe, and engage with architecture. With the discussion on the concept of becoming with and the phenomenon of the abstracted space, my ambition has been to provide a way of thinking with architecture, which asks for higher awareness of the potential bestowed by this theory which ultimately can influence the way artists or architects plan, draw, imagine, construct, and assemblage architecture

    Gesture interaction support explaining ideas

    This project aims at exploring how gesture interaction can support user explaining ideas in remote meeting. In the refined sketch, there will be a common transparent board between the speaker and audiences, the speaker can use gestures to make lists, create shapes, draw lines on that common board during his speech. Besides that, the speaker can also use gesture to grab and move those elements he created. By making lists, the speaker can easily highlight the key points of the meeting, with those basic shapes and drawings, those spatial relationship and abstract thoughts can be explained clearly. Furthermore, the speaker can use gesture to change common board or grab the old common board back, so he can easily jump between old and new topic. If the speaker is sharing slides, he can use the pointing gesture to move his camera video to the place he’s pointing. In this way, we can simulate the situation of people point in real life, poten-tially direct the audiences’ attention better. Not only the presenter can point, but the audienc-es can also point and move their camera videos to the place they are pointing. Because of that, there will be more interaction between the speaker and audiences. Except this refined sketch, the basic problems such as how people can interact with computer/machine through hands, what should we pay attention to when designing the gesture triggered function, how to design the gesture triggered function, have been discussed in this project as well. Although there is a final refined sketch based on my insights and principles, as an exploratory project, the purpose of this diploma is not giving the final solution, but showing the different possibilities, along with the exploration of those basic problems, this project can be a foundation for people to go further in this area.submittedVersio

    Designerly Approaches for Catalyzing Change in Social Systems: A Social Structures Approach

    Given the growing interest in systemic design, there is a demand for designerly approaches that can aid practitioners in catalyzing social systems change. The purpose of this research is to develop an initial portfolio of designerly approaches that acknowledges social structures as a key leverage point for influencing social systems. This article presents learnings from experimentation with a host of designerly approaches for shaping social structures and identifies four design principles to guide systemic design practitioners in doing this work. This research contributes to the evolving and pluralistic methodology of systemic design by presenting formats for design activities that take social structures seriously and identifying ways that systemic designers, and other practitioners, can re-entangle themselves in the systems they seek to change.publishedVersio
