    Denne diplomen handler om ett lydbilde som har blitt gitt tittelen: «4.40 - en romlig sekvens». Lydbildet har jeg har komponert selv. Lydbildet etterfølges så av en lesning og tolkning av seg selv; som landskaper, rom og strukturer. Lydbildet ble til ved at jeg tok opp lyden av 5 bygninger - alle eksisterende sentrale verk i norsk arkitekturhistorie. Av opptakenes råmateriale komponerte jeg «4.40 - en romlig sekvens». Deretter lyttet jeg til lydbildet. Igjen. Igjen. Og igjen. De fem sentrale verkene var som følger: 1. Nasjonalgalleriet 2. St. Hallvard kirke 3. Emanuel Vigeland museum 4. Veritas 5. Slependen stasjon Først leste jeg lydbildet som landskap. Former, steder og farger som intuitivt resonerte med lydbildet. Så skisset jeg frem rom som jeg assosierte med spesifikke tidspunkter i lydbildet. Landskapene og rommene ble sammenfattet i en film som akkompagneres av lydbildet. Til slutt jobbet jeg frem tre modeller, som hver og en tar for seg hele lydbildet fra start til slutt. De er romlige strukturer som jeg kaller en potensiell arkitektur. Fotskrittene i lydbildet indikerte en skala og ga lydbildet en menneskelig tilnærming. Helt til slutt finner strukturene sin plass i landskapene. Prosessen har vært drevet av støy og stillhet, intuisjon, og en tiltro til at “man skaper så finner man”. ´Bakgrunnen for denne oppgaven er en samtale mellom arkitekt Sverre Fehn, og komponist Arne Nordheim på arkitektenes hus i 1994. Fehn sier blant annet at “vi går stadig i enorme lydbilder, som gir deg rommet”. Denne besnærende setningen har fulgt meg i arbeidet hele veien, og den fikk meg til å stille denne oppgavens spørsmål: Hvordan kan ett lydbilde generere en arkitektonisk idé, og til slutt bli ett helt prosjekt? Hvordan kan man nærme seg arkitektur gjennom ett lydbilde? De ulike delene av prosjektet; lyden, landskapene, rommene og de tre strukturene vil til slutt informere og utfylle hverandre og i sin sammenstilling danne ett helhetlig prosjekt - selv om hver enkelt del kan leses som et selvstendig arkitektonisk arbeid i seg selv. Hva dette er, eventuelt ikke er, blir til slutt opp til lytteren og betrakteren. Prosjektet løser - og blir samtidig, seg selv. Foruten å være en personlig tilnærming, mener jeg at dette prosjektet viser en alternativ og eksperimentell måte å generere og representere arkitektur på. Lyd er et egnet medium for å arbeide frem arkitektoniske ideer, da både arkitektur og lyd utspiller seg i tidens dimensjon. Arkitektur er tid og bevegelse, rom og materialer som vibrerer.     FOKUS - arbeidsstol til hjemmet, designet for å vare

    Med fokus på reparasjon og vedlikehold har jeg designet en arbeidsstol for hjemmekontor som estetisk passer hjemmet, da det er en mangel på dette i dagens marked. Prosessen har vært preget av å balansere ergonomi, funksjonalitet og bærekraft, med et uttrykk som minner om et stuemøbel. FOKUS har et lett, ærlig og sjarmerende uttrykk inspirert av nordisk stil, som passer godt inn hjemme. Den kan stå i flere rom uten å sjenere omgivelsene, og er like fin som en ekstra middagsstol som ved kontorpulten. Stolen har en simpel konstruksjon der alle komponenter kan tas fra hverandre. Slik kan brukeren bytte ødelagte deler og drive enkel vedlikehold selv. Den todelte ryggen tilbyr god og variert støtte. Ved å løsne hjulet bak kan man tilpasse ryggdelene til seg.     At Økern in Oslo, the sports club Hasle / Løren IL have their facilities. One of their main branches is ice hockey. In the future the club has confirmed that they will build a new arena for this sport. The proposal consists of two nearly identical ice hockey arenas. And the building has a footprint of about 11000 square meters. This large program is in an urban environment under great development. The building consists of 3 floors. It has a base that spans 2 floors. The structural walls are of concrete. The grandstand is precast concrete elements. The floor slab and the columns futher up in the structure are also made of the same material. The walls and columns have a centre distance of 7m. The roof construction is a steel structure. It has beams in the direction with the shortest span, which is 50 m. The second direction there are modules that are welded on the beams. The construction has a height of 3m. And consists of H beams and 25cm square steel tube. The entire construction rests on concrete beams with a cross section of 50cm.submittedVersio

    The Norwegian Government’s goal is an efficient public sector that provides good services for its citizens. However, in the near future, Norway will face challenges that threaten the sustainability of today’s welfare society. Less economic room for manoeuvre, an aging population and environmental changes will require new ways of working. One of the soulutions to these challenges is very likely to be further digitalization of public services and the Norwegian Government is interested in taking advantage of the promising capabilities of Artificial Intelligence. However, many may face new challenges when the services are digitalized, and demanding life circumstances often makes digital self service solutions difficult to complete. This diploma explores how Artificial Intelligence technologies can be used as a design material to enhance the user experience of digital services in the Norwegian public sector and to build citizencentric services that enables more people to effectively communicate with public services online. Helpful AI approaches this challenge by working to translate AI’s technological capabilities into design opportunities, and then use them in an opportunity driven and citizen focused design process. This approach differs from most of the ongoing efforts involving AI in the Norwegian public sector, which are mostly both internal- and problem focused. This brings value in increased diversity and possibly new ways of talking about AI in public services. The result is not a finished solution for applied AI in the public sector, but four recommended opportunity areas and four corresponding helpful AI-concepts: «The Controller», «The Advisor», «The Third Party» and «The Translator».submittedVersio

    Oysterworks – Exploring the potential of the Pacific oyster in biomaterials

    With a material driven design approach, where the raw material source is present from the outset, this project explores the possible use of oyster shells in biomaterials. The raw material choice for this project targets the current problem with the Pacific oyster in Norway. The occurrence of Pacific oysters along the Norwegian coastline has exploded in recent years. The species is invasive, threatening biodiversity and changing ecosystems. Tons are picked every year in an attempt to reduce the occurrence. These oysters constitute a waste problem. Can the shells from Pacific oysters be utilized with the purpose of creating a new material and value of an invasive and unwanted species? The project explores the possible use of oyster shells in biomaterials. The aim of the project has been to explore how design methods can contribute in developing new materials for the future. The process combines both tangible and abstract methods for exploration. With a hands-on attitude, different material compositions are explored and properties evaluated. The material samples are further explored and analyzed through experimental studies with users. To represent the potential of the materials, three suggestions on how it can be applied in products are presented.     The simplicity of the utedo serves as a comprehensible entryway to more complex topics. The initial goal of this project was to build something and to learn from it. Throughout the semester we’ve understood that the topic of the toilet and the utedo is a universal one. And that it connects to cultural, economic, social, environmental and political spheres. Our project does not offer a perfect solution, not for a perfect sewage-system and not for the utedo. For us it has been a tool for learning and a generator of discussions. Discussions connected to the specific topics of sewage and human waste, but also on how we learn, how we want to live our lives and who we want to be as architects.submittedVersio

    Hvordan kan AI påvirke designprosessen fra utvikling til sluttprodukt? Ved bruk av AI bildegenerering skape en ideretninger for prototyping og utvikling av design. Som proff-of-concept støpte vi brillene lokalt i 100% resirkulert plast. Gjennom et konsulentoppdrag med Norwegian Trash, har vi anvendt bildegenerering for å generere opp mot 400 solbrilledesign som vi kategoriserte i konsept og ideretninger. Disse ble deretter oversatt til 2D ortografiske bilder og deretter videre til CAD og 3D-printing. Gjennom iterativ jobbing med CAD, 3D-print, brukere og AI-bilder utviklet og støpte vi solbriller for Norwegian Trash.Norwegian TrashsubmittedVersio

    Møllerodden Mek. – from industry to a new cultural node

    An investigation on how the existing industrial structures at Vibrandsøy could be prepared, transformed and facilitated in the best sustainable manner to serve the different needs for the increasing need for cultural programs in the region. Nation wide, and too in Haugesund, there is an increase in unoccupied industrial structures. We aim to test two different transformational strategies that could make use of these structures and make them fit for modern standards while at the same time convey the unique historic qualities they inhabit. Our diploma is an investigation of an alternative to the planned demolition of the steel hangar and a proposal of new use of the protected workshop hall, which will operate together as an extension of the innovative and cultural platforms in Haugesund, and thus generate new activity set in a uniquely scenic situation. The concept of keeping traces of former functions and structural properties have been key to our project development. This approach has allowed for the exhibit of historical traces of what were once an activator of the spaces and the island. The considerable spaces available has allowed the project to be more generous with both the organisation and volumetric and thus provides significantly more liberal qualities compared to what would realistically be considered in a new-built project both from an economical and ecological perspective.submittedVersio

    Open Storage: Museological Artefacts Will Outnumber Us

    «The project is the result of a study of a composite scenario where partly antagonistic fields must be considered against each other in order to sketch a convincing architectural strategy for an open storage museum programme. These considerations are linked to conservation, curation, archeology, visitors, city development, and the city antiquity. The project uses Lokomotivverkstedet in the Medieval Park in Oslo as a place to study and evolve the architectural strategy. The existing building is approached by focusing on crucial maintenance and repair work. Individual acclimatized storage rooms house the permanent collection. The storages are inserted into the existing building by adding a secondary skeleton-structure. The in-between space of the acclimatized storages and the existing building function as circulation and temporary exhibition space. Museums worldwide typically showcase between 2 and 4 percent of their collections. The remaining 96 percent is hidden in storage, typically in the museum itself or on the outskirts of the city. Museum collections are increasingly digitalized and made “open to the public, accessible and inclusive” as the ICOM museum definition states. Whether digitalized or not, the collections take up a lot of physical space and is inaccessible to the public. The reason for the museums not displaying all their artefacts at once is simple – a limitation of display space and costs in connection to conservation and curated exhibitions. It raises the question if artefacts can be exhibited in a more efficient way so that a greater share of the collections are made physically accessible to the public. If so – how? Is the open storage concept a possibility? And what are the downsides of making larger parts of the collections physically accessible? Big developments, especially initiated by the railway, has worked as catalysts for archeological excavations in Gamle Oslo from mid 1800s. The history of the area of Gamle Oslo, or old Oslo, reaches back to medieval times. The accumulation of archeologically excavated medieval ruins and sites, Oslo being mentioned in the Sagas of the Viking Kings of Norway and archeological finds dated to the medieval period showing traces of connections with central Europe witness that it has been a place of great importance in Norway. By placing a public programme with archeologically excavated medieval artefacts as content in close relation to the medieval ruins and sites and the commenced Medieval Park I aim to create a wholeness and continue to build on the area´s identity. In the middle of the Medieval Park in Oslo lies what used to be the locomotive workshop (Lokomotivverkstedet) for the railway activity that was, and still is, a significant feature of the area. The building, made from drawings by railway engineer Oxhaal in 1893, is of a an industrial character with neo-gothic brick facades and spacious halls. It holds a public character in the context of Oslo today. The building has been sporadically maintained and is in great need of repair work. Today the building listed as yellow, equivalent to a grade II listing, whilst the ground is listed as red, equivalent to grade I listed. Lokomotivverkstedet has for many years been without a clear use and future plan and has up unitl recently worked as a storage for archeologically excavated artefacts owned by Museum of Cultural History. By making use of the building and inserting an open storage programme many of the objects in the collection will be re-contextualised either to the area where it was excavated from the ground or to where it was earlier stored.submittedVersio
