    Disclosing Data is a design proposal to facilitate a discussion surrounding our role as designers. The concept consists of several possibility studies showcasing different ways of making data more open and understandable. As data has become a currency, issues of privacy have risen, thus creating distrust in a lot of users. We’ve found that this creates a bad user experience, and through our research it’s clear that being more open and transparent with how data is processed is one way of rebuilding that trust. Each possibility study has a focus on a different type of data, or different viewpoints within the same category of data. I.E.     Long-term Sneakers

    “Foldin” is a project that explores the modularity around sneakers, and the relation between the user and the sneaker. Foldin is a modular sneaker, with three main components. The upper sock, the shock absorbent sole, and the outer sole which hold everything together with laces and also provide grip. By making the sneaker modular, the user can replace the worn-out part and avoid throwing the whole shoe. Since it consists of loose components, the different parts could easily be sorted and recycled. The shape of the front tip makes it possible for the user to have space around their toes, and one can at the same time tighten the grip around the upper part. The sole is made out of an elastic material and has a pattern of holes around the product. The holes allow the user to assemble the laces in any way that suits the user the most, both comfortably and aesthetically. The shock-absorbent innersole is created to form around the under part of the foot. This is to reduce friction and to create a bouncy and comfortable feel when used. Since this is the part that gets the most changed, the user can easily remove the part without any tools. After the user has purchased the sneakers, they can register the production number on the shoe brand’s website, and track down their purchase history for the next parts. Only owners of these shoes get notified when theres news about the sneaker, and are the only ones that can buy replacement parts with the code. The sneaker is produced without any glue and with recyclable materials. I was inspired by the ocean and its uneven forms and patterns. The waves in the sole created an unfamiliar but minimalistic look. Which created interesting shapes around the sole.submittedVersio

    Den kompakte byen - et byideal i endring? En undersøkelse av byutviklingen på Kaldnes gjennom 20 år

    Denne oppgaven undersøker den kompakte byen som byideal og viser hvordan dette idealet er i endring. Dette gjøres gjennom en casestudie av byutviklingen på Kaldnes i Tønsberg. Kaldnes er valgt da det er et stort transformasjon- og fortettingsprosjekt der deler er bygget ut mens en stor del fortsatt er under planlegging. Casestudien analyserer hvilke intensjoner om kompaktby som kommer til syne i plan- og politisk prosess og hvordan den kompakte byen kommer til uttrykk som fysisk resultat, som byform i Tønsberg og Kaldnes. Jeg har valgt ut fire temaer ved den kompakte byen hentet fra kompaktby-teori; Byform, bymessighet, identitet og bærekraftig transport. Temaene identifiserer ulike tilnærminger til hva en kompaktby er og strukturerer det teoretiske tilfanget i oppgaven. Temaene fungerer også som redskap for analysene av casestudiet og inn i drøftingen. Funn fra casestudien viser tydelige endringer i noen aspekter ved den kompakte byen som byideal de siste to tiår. For det første har det blitt et større fokus på mennesket og menneskelig aktivitet, hvor arkitekturen i større grad diskuteres som ramme for menneskelig aktivitet. For det andre vektes natur og landskap tyngre enn før, både med tanke på å etablere nye grøntarealer og å ivareta eksisterende miljøgoder. For det tredje søker nye prosjekter i større grad, med bebyggelsestruktur og byrom, å skape kontinuitet og sammenheng med sine omgivelser. Der man tidligere ønsket et tydelig skille og en kontrast, jobber man nå mer med en tilpasning. Med ønsket om å skape kontinuitet kommer det også et større behov for å se prosjektene i større sammenhenger og i hvilken grad transformasjonsprosjekter bygger opp om det eksisterende sentrum. Prosjektet må sees i sammenheng med resten av byen. Det har i tillegg blitt et større fokus på sosial bærekraft og med dette, i hvilken grad prosjektet tilfører nye tilgjengelige fellesgoder og offentlige byrom.submittedVersio

    The project deals with housing for humans in a parking house structure: Sannergata 14. Among the fundamental strategies for a green future in architecture is a commitment to discover hidden potential in what is already built. Parking houses above ground inside the central parts of Oslo are long on their way to becoming anachronisms as the private car is politically pushed out of the city center. The aim of this spatial investigation is to identify architectural quality, as a means to outweigh the alternative of demolition. This project shakes the hierarchy of how buildings are valued, and takes one of the least obvious building structure seriously.     Exploration of emotional design elements in electrical products

    In today’s throwaway society, we need long-lasting products that not only have durability and reparability but also sentimental values. Unic is a coffee grinder with different bean-pouring sounds in different grind settings. By creating interesting sound elements into the product, the design is created for users to build memories and connections with it, and in the end to increase users’ willingness to keep and use the product to reach its full potential.This project started on a broad topic of how to make electrical products with a long life span and narrowed it down to using sound as a design element to increase the product’s emotional values. Coffee grinders have been chosen as an example to give context to the design process. Sketching, sound prototyping and user testings have been done to explore using sound to create an interesting and multi-sensory using experience. I decided to move on with 2 ideas for the final prototyping, because one idea is conventional and the other one is radical, this gave me chance to test out how big the boundaries are in this concept.     Enactive methods towards situational learning - engaging people with intellectual and developmental disability in design

    In this paper we explore how enactive methods may support and enhance the design of mobile solutions for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Our project deals with supporting independent public transport and applies enactive methods in order to account for the interdependent nature of technology, disability, and environment. We staged three iterations of a bus workshop and one theatre workshop where real, everyday scenarios were acted out to gain tacit yet crucial insights. These enactive workshops and the prototype testing showed that transport activities are context dependent and unique to each individual. In our case, enactive methods revealed that independent public transport goes beyond a need for reminders, time management and communication, towards the management of unforeseen events. Our work shows how a closer realistic setting may provide more nuanced, personal, and detailed design insights that support emotional and situational understandings of user experiences.publishedVersio

    Iranian vernacular architecture is today among the inspiring resources of climatic and sustainable design. These architectural design considerations led to a variety of typologies and architectural elements that were specifically driven from climatic conditions, available resources, and craft in the district and climatic zones they were in Iran. Windcatchers as landmarks contribute to the natural passive ventilation of the indoor spaces. The traditional ventilation system has been re-interpreted in the project as an integral part of the design, providing the ventilation system. One of the challenges of contemporary Iranian architecture is the lack of discourse between traditional and modern approaches in creating new forms in a historical urban environment.     Unused Assets

    The municipality of Oslo own 119 buildings that are left unused and without future plans. One of these buildings are Trondheimsgata 132 at Carl Berner. Trondheimsgata 132 is chosen as a test lab to explore different ways of shared living; to investigate what shared architecture an existing building can inhabit. Unused Assets is a transformation project, focused on the threshold of the private, the shared and the public. Explored through a cooperative with different apartment typologies, a public first floor and a community centre. The thesis explores the question whether or not the 119 empty municipality owned buildings can be used to aid a non-profit housing sector in Oslo; treating housing as a common good instead of a commodity.submittedVersio

    Sannergata Natatorium - A center for Therapy

    The project is located at a central site in Grünerløkka by the intersection of Sannergata and Akerselva. The site descends gradually towards the river where large trees create a natural barrier and contrast to the busy street. The center is designed for all groups in need of therapy, particularly in water, but could also be open for schools in the area, regular swimming exercises for the occasional user or groups at times when not in use for therapy. The idea of the natatorium was based on the fact that most therapy facilities in Oslo has been closed down over the last years leaving a vulnerable part of society that depend on such offers, left powerless. The natatorium is designed with the main entrance from the corner of Sannergata and Markveien. One enters through glass doors into the main foyer, with a direct line of sight through a glass wall to the swimming area and the trees outside. In the foyer there is a café, ticket office and entrance into the wardrobes, the basement and the second floor. Through the changing rooms one enters the therapy and swimming facility. The facility is equipped with two large pools, various smaller pools and water therapy objects. The large pool measures 25 x 15.5 m with six lanes for exercise swimming. The pool is equipped with an adjustable bridge and bottom that can be raised in half of the pool to divide and open for different uses. The temperature in the pool is normally 26 – 28 degrees C but can be raised in one half when the bridge is raised. The therapy pool is smaller and normally holds a higher temperature of 32 – 34 degrees C. Warmer water is beneficial to ease symptoms of many conditions, and the physics of moving through water make it possible for individuals who struggle moving on land to move with ease. The pool has a wide range of uses from exercise for geriatric or rheumatic patients to baby swimming. A child’s pool, 30 cm deep is located near the therapy pool, and will often be in use when there is baby swimming in the therapy pool. A large sized hot tub is located nearby and next to it an ice basin. Furthermore, there are high pressure massage showers, saunas, and relaxation areas for common wellbeing. The second floor contains therapy rooms for physio-, chiro- and osteopathic treatment and two rooms for therapeutic exercise. From the first floor there is access to a spectator gallery in the main swimming hall for parents or assisting personnel The building is based on a hybrid construction, with concrete basement and core, prefabricated pools, a ribbed roof of laminated wood and cross laminated timber elements. The large supporting walls in the west wall towards the river consist of laminated columns on the inside and a wider shading part on the outside. The slim columns that form the west wall are repeated at the entrance towards Sannergata. The facade towards Markveien is planned with a double wall consisting of an inner layer of glass and aluminum, and an outer shading layer of hollow concrete blocks. These are stacked from the ground level to the roof giving shade and privacy to the therapy treatment rooms on the first floor. The entire building is given a mural look by using aerated plasterwork on all facades in a light, almost white color. The roof over the pool areas is perforated with light domes in a regular structure over the hall. Light is filtered down into the swimming area and will, together with the glass wall towards the river, provide natural daylight into the entire room supporting the therapeutic intent of the center.submittedVersio
