Enhanced Human-Robot Teaming Through Attention Multi Convolutional Neural Network-Based Multi-Modal Sensor Fusion for Hand Gesture Recognition and Orientation Control

    Get PDF
Our study aims at enhancing Human-Robot Interaction, Collaboration, and Teaming (HRI/C/T) in industrial automation by developing a novel framework for real-time gesture control of a robotic hand. We use an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensor for precise orientation control of the end effector, and surface Electromyography (sEMG) sensors to detect muscle movements. The sEMG signals are processed by an Attention-based Multi Convolutional Neural Network (A-MCNN) for accurate gesture detection, enabling the robotic hand to mimic these gestures in real-time. Our method achieves notable results for gesture recognition, with the A-MCNN model attaining an accuracy of 97.89%, a precision of 97.49%, a recall of 97.71%, and an F1 score of 97.65%. This integration of IMU and sEMG technologies with advanced neural networks creates a responsive and intuitive control mechanism, improving safety, usability, and interaction of collaborative robots in shared workspaces. Our approach aims to transition towards Human-Robot Teaming (HRT), significantly advancing the seamless and safe integration of robots in industrial environments, enhancing productivity and collaboration.submittedVersio

A Conceptual Relation Between the Need to Belong and Sense-of-Belongingness

    Get PDF
All humans have a fundamental need to belong (NTB), that is, forming and maintaining social connections. However, having these positive social bonds does not necessarily equal one’s sense-of-belongingness (SOB). Contemporary literature frequently uses NTB and SOB interchangeably, or SOB is seen as a by-product of NTB satisfaction. This conceptual paper aims to (1) provide the arguments that there exists a difference between the “Need to Belong” as a universal construct of fundamental psychological need and “sense-of-belongingness” as a sensation that arose from distinct belongingness conditions, and (2) argue that these differences bear on human action under specific situations and contexts. Two hypothetical life situations are presented to illustrate the divergence of one’s motivational need to belong compared to the specific self-processes regarding one’s sense-of-belongingness. We concluded that there are arguments to claim that NTB and SOB, under specific social conditions, might be conceptually and empirically opposed or unrelated to one another.publishedVersio

Indremisjonen : Strategiar på den nordvestlandske religiøse marknaden 1920–1970

    No full text
In 1920, responding to a perceived, urgent threat from theological liberalisation, the Norwegian Inner Mission Society facilitated a convention of 950 low-church delegates. Strategies outlined here included using policies of non-cooperation and non-platforming. But visions were also drawn for conquering the school system, the Church, and local communities from the inside. Some of these plans, and other, more specific local Inner Mission strategies, were partly successful. The vigour and energy on display here, run contrary to perceptions of modern Scandinavian religious history as dominated by “lazy monopolies” and low religious diversity. The Inner Mission, together with other voluntary lay organisations, provided Norwegian Lutheran Christians with outlets for religious fervour, without them having to formally exit the official Church. This, in turn, helps explain how Norway could become the per-capita leader in overseas missionaries in the late 1900s, and why low-church Lutheranism has left its clear marks on modern Norwegian culture, politics and institutions. This dissertation describes and analyses strategies used by the Inner Mission to compete in the religious market of the counties of Møre og Romsdal and Sogn og Fjordane between 1920 and 1970. With a cultural approach to the analysis of strategic planning, and a Rational Choice-inspired approach to religious market dynamics, this dissertation explores the development and decisions of regional associations of the Inner Mission. The sources are primarily regional low-church magazines. An empirical basis is found in donation accounts and in a geospatial and chronological registration of prayer houses, called “bedehus”. A central theme is the “market effect” of different end-time theologies, different levels of loyalty to the official Church, different approaches to recruitment, and different levels of theological strictness. Overall, a shift is observed, from a growing movement defined by radical revivals in the 1920s and 1930s, to a dwindling one, known for charming, fundraising lotteries around 1970. This shift happened to a larger degree in church-loyal versions of the Inner Mission, than in stricter ones, providing a Norwegian example of the effects of “strong religion”.publishedVersio

A Resource Approach to Mathematics Teacher Education

    Get PDF
The research presented in this dissertation addresses the disconnect between university coursework and school placement, as experienced by pre-service mathematics teachers (PSTs). In their educational trajectory, PSTs assume two roles with contrasting ‘scripts’ (Stigler & Hiebert, 1999): the role of being students themselves and the role of being (novice) teachers (Sødal, 2023, p. 2). As the PSTs transition between the contexts of university coursework and school placement, they participate in practices with different and sometimes contrasting expectations for and approaches to teaching mathematics (Goos, 2009). Concurrently, the PSTs are expected to learn from consolidating the experiences from university coursework and school placement. PSTs themselves, however, tend to view the two experiences as separate from each other and regard practical experiences as superior to theoretical aspects in their teacher education (Brekke & Leikvoll Eide, 2021; Solomon et al., 2017; Sødal, 2022). Moreover, Norwegian teacher education has been criticised for polarity between theory and praxis and there is a call for teacher education programmes to better prepare PSTs for the teaching profession (Mosvold et al., 2018). This study reports on the process of developing a Resource Bank for teaching mathematics for seven PSTs. The inquiry explores in what ways a Resource Bank for teaching mathematics can mediate between the PSTs’ experiences in coursework and school placement, thereby breaching the boundary (Sødal, 2023) between the two sites and supporting the PSTs’ learning across contexts. The dissertation consists of four papers, each addressing the following four research questions: 1. What aspects of working with resources in university coursework do pre-service mathematics teachers accentuate as beneficial in preparing them for teaching mathematics in elementary school? 2. In what ways can a networked understanding support the exploration of the potential of a Resource Bank for teaching mathematics? 3. How does the proposed analytical framework composed of DAD and Valsiner’s zone theory elucidate how the RB mediates the PSTs’ learning as they move between university coursework and school placement? 4. In what ways does the documentational genesis of a Resource Bank for teaching mathematics support pre-service mathematics teachers in breaching the boundary between experiences in university coursework and school placement? A theoretical framework for studying the Resource Bank has been developed through networking the documentational approach to didactics (Gueudet & Trouche, 2009) and Valsiner’s zone theory (Valsiner, 1997). By applying the strategy of ‘combining’ (Prediger et al., 2008), the framework provided constructs that facilitated the analysis of the PSTs’ interaction with the Resource Bank through different contexts. The findings illustrate how a Resource Bank for teaching mathematics can mediate between university-based experiences and school-based experiences for PSTs. Three mediating properties of the Resource Bank have been highlighted: 1. The RB mediates between the PSTs and their own schemes (for teaching mathematics) 2. The RB mediates between coursework and school placement when schemes for teaching mathematics are tested and revised 3. The RB mediates between theoretical and practical aspects of teaching mathematics through entry-slips (Sødal, 2024, p. 16) Thus, it is concluded that a Resource Bank for teaching mathematics can breach the boundary between the two sites and support PSTs’ learning across contexts.publishedVersio

Electromyography (EMG)-based gesture detection plays a crucial role in human-robot interaction (HRI), providing a seamless interface for controlling robotic systems through muscle activity. Despite its potential, EMG systems face significant challenges related to the security and privacy of sensitive biometric data, as well as the computational limitations of deploying deep learning (DL) models on edge devices. To address these issues, we propose a federated learning (FL)-based DL model for EMG gesture recognition, specifically designed for edge devices. Our model utilizes a custom dataset collected using a Mindrove eight-channel EMG armband, capturing eight distinct hand gestures—rest, move left, move right, move down, move up, open fingers, close fist, and twist hand—from ten subjects with seven repetitions each, ensuring diverse and robust data for training. During preprocessing, a bandpass filter (50–450 Hz) was applied to remove noise and enhance signal quality, followed by a short-term frequency transform (STFT) with a 200-ms sample time and 50% overlap to extract relevant features from the EMG signals. The dataset was segmented into training and testing sets with a 70/30 split for evaluation. We evaluate several FL techniques, including FedAvg, FedProx, and FedSGD, demonstrating that FedAvg achieves the highest accuracy of 96.92% without quantization with Scenario 9 (15 epochs, 20 rounds) with minimal communication overhead. Additionally, our model is quantized, resulting in an 89% reduction in size and a high accuracy of 95.99%, representing a minimal loss of 0.93%, making it ideal for edge deployment without compromising performance. A comparative analysis with other DL models, such as multiconvolutional residual networks (MCRNs), multiconvolutional neural networks (MCNNs), temporal convolutional networks (TCNs), and InceptionNet, shows that our approach outperforms these models in both accuracy and efficiency. Experimental results validate the high accurac...submittedVersio

Dietary intake, nutritional status, and food literacy competencies among Norwegian youth following plantbased and omnivore diets

    Get PDF
Background: Predominantly plant-based diets offer numerous health benefits, such as reducing the risk of non-communicable diseases. However, poorly planned plant-based diets may pose potential dietary risks, particularly concerning for vulnerable populations, such as youth. The energy and nutrient requirements of youth are increased due to rapid physical growth and cognitive development. Inadequate intake of essential nutrients during this critical life phase can therefore have serious long-term health consequences. At the same time, the youth period represents a transition from dependence of childhood to adulthood independence. During this period, youth gain greater responsibility over their food choices. Therefore, it is of importance for youth to be equipped with the needed food literacy competencies, for them to be able to navigate today’s food environment, and to make health promoting food choices. Particularly, if omitting several food groups from their diet, such as restrictive plant-based diets. In Nordic countries, studies on dietary intake and nutritional status among youth following plant-based diets were last conducted for more than 20 years ago. Currently, data are lacking on this demographic in Norway, highlighting the need for updated research. In addition, data on food literacy among youth following plant-based diets are absent.publishedVersio

Refleksiv Tematisk Analyse anvendes for dataanalyse.

    Get PDF

    Get PDF
