Comparative elucidation of the phenolic profile and antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of unripe and ripe Pistacia lentiscus L. fruits and their oils as affected by ripening
BackgroundPhenolic compounds, antioxidant activity, and antimicrobial properties of unripe and ripe mastic tree (Pistacia lentiscus L.) fruits and their oils were investigated.ResultsA total of 20 phenolic compounds were identified by using liquid chromatography-diode array detection and electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry, among which phenolic acids were predominant. The main phenolic compound was catechin in the unripe fruit and trigalloylquinic acid in the unripe fruit oil, whereas galloylquinic acid was dominant in the ripe fruit and its oil. Unripe fruits had the highest amount of total phenolic content (TPC; 2771.4 mg kg-1), whereas the ripe fruit oils had the lowest TPC (14.1 mg kg-1). The quantity of the phenolics decreased as the fruits ripened. Tests revealed significant antimicrobial activity of the fruit extracts against Staphylococcus aureus but not on Escherichia coli, whereas fruit oils showed no antimicrobial effects.ConclusionThe fruits and their oils exhibited significant alterations in phenolic composition, antioxidant activity, and antimicrobial effects during ripening. These findings highlight the impact of ripeness on the bioactive properties of mastic tree fruits and their potential applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries. Temperature-dependent electrical characteristics analysis of the Al/p-type Si structures with GO and PTCDA interlayer: structural properties
In this study, the electrical characteristics of Al/p-type Si semiconductor structures with PTCDA and GO interlayer were analyzed using current-voltage (I-V) measurements a wide temperature range (from 80 to 420 K with 20 K intervals and +/- 2.0 V). The ideality factor (n) and barrier height (Phi bo) values changed between 6.398 and 1.330 and 0.221 eV and 0.999 eV (for thermionic emission, TE, method), 0.243 eV and 1.084 eV (for Norde method) in temperature range of 80 K and 420 K, respectively. The experimental findings revealed that values of ideality factors (n), rectification ratio (RR) and series resistance (RS) decreases with increasing temperature, while barrier heights (Phi bo) and saturation currents (I0) values increases with increasing temperature. The Phi bo-n and Phi bo-q/(2kT) curves were obtained to explain the high n values and non-ideal situations of the Richardson curves. Two linear regions were found at low temperatures (from 80 to 180 K) and high temperatures (from 200 to 420 K). Thus, for low and high temperatures, Gaussian distributions (GDs) values of the I - V plot of the Al/(PTCDA:GO)/p-type Si semiconductor structure yielded average barrier heights of 0.7017 and 1.3342 eV with standard deviations (sigma 0) of 83.06 mV and 168.80 mV, respectively. Also, this values of barrier height have also been confirmed by updated ln(I0/T2) - (q2 sigma s2)/(2k2T2) vs. q/(kT) curves, which correspond to two distinct temperature regions. Richardson constant (A*) value with 1.153 x 10-6A/(K2cm2) is lower than the known value of p-type Si. But nevertheless, for distribution 1, Richardson's constant of 80.64 A/(K2cm2) is approximately three times larger than the known theoretical value of 32 Acm-2 K-2 for p-type silicon.Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkiye (TUBITAK)Open access funding provided by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkiye (TUBITAK). A Different Solvent for Dissolution of Ulexite: A Kinetic Study in Ammonium Hydrogen Sulphate
This research delves into the dissolution kinetics of ulexite, a mineral characterized by its high boron content, in ammonium hydrogen sulphate (NH₄HSO₄) solution. Considering Turkey's pivotal position in the global boron market, the study is geared towards discovering a greener and more cost-effective alternative to the conventional sulfuric acid process for producing boric acid. Dissolution experiments were systematically performed under varying conditions, including temperatures of 30°C to 80°C, NH₄HSO₄ concentrations ranging from 0.2 M to 1 M, solid-to-liquid ratios of 0.02 to 0.1 g/mL, stirring speeds between 200 and 600 rpm, and particle sizes from 53 to 600 micrometers. The findings revealed that the dissolution rate increased with rising temperatures, higher NH₄HSO₄ concentrations, and smaller particle sizes. Specifically, at 80°C and NH₄HSO₄ concentration of 1 M, the dissolution rate was considerably higher than under lower temperature and concentration conditions. In contrast, a higher solid-to-liquid ratio resulted in a reduced dissolution rate, indicating that an optimal balance must be struck for efficient processing. Kinetic analysis, employing the shrinking core model, revealed an activation energy of 42.98 kJ/mol, signifying that the process is governed by chemical reactions. These insights suggest that NH₄HSO₄ could serve as a promising alternative solvent for boric acid production, offering potential environmental and economic advantages. Nonetheless, further research is essential to assess its feasibility for commercial use. Kinetic dissolution with ammonium hydrogen sulphate provides more efficient and faster results compared to dissolution with conventional solutions. © 2025, Iranian Institute of Research and Development in Chemical Industries. Kriton Energy; Prisma Electronics SA; SUNOTEC Group4th International Conference on Electronics, Engineering Physics and Earth Science, EEPES 2025 -- 18 June 2025 through 20 June 2025 -- Hybrid, Alexandroupolis -- 210513The thin plates made from ABS through the FFF method have been tested by CO2laser cutting with different parameters as follows: Kerf Open Deviation (KOD), Kerf Angle (KA), and Bottom Heat-Affected Zone (HAZ) for performance evaluation. Among such parameters include the type of plate thickness (1 and 1.5 mm), laser power (85, 92.5, and 100 W), and cutting speed (4, 7, 10 mm/s), while a full factorial design was incorporated for the experiment. The analysis of the effects indicated for certain output quality indicators by means of main effects plots, ANOVA, and regression modeling, has been used to infer how the input parameters have affected these quality indicators. It was shown that KOD minimum value (0.472 mm) will be at 1 mm thickness, 85 W, and 7 mm/s speed, while minimum KA (10.5) occurs at 1.5 mm thickness and 85 W power. Minimum value of Bottom HAZ (0.222 mm) was measured at 1 mm thickness, with an 85 W power at a cutting speed of 10 mm/s. According to ANOVA outcomes, thickness of plate has the highest influence on both KOD and KA, whereas speed of cutting was the dominant factor for Bottom HAZ. The regression models developed for all the responses show very high accuracy, with R2values of 87.33%, 94.47%, and 93.92% for KOD, KA, and bottom HAZ, respectively, thus confirming their predictive abilities. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2025

Osmanlı Donanması’nda Kömür Kullanımına Genel Bir Bakış (1781-1850)
During the period when shipbuilding technology was based on wood, charcoal was used extensively as a heat source in the production of the iron parts of the ships. Thanks to its rich forest resources, the Ottoman Empire, which had a great advantage over its contemporary states in the supply of charcoal, continued its construction activities by supplying charcoal without being dependent on foreign sources. However, this advantageous situation of the Ottoman Empire ended with the start of the construction of steamships in the first quarter of the 19th century. The Ottoman Empire, which did not have the means to build such ships, which required know-how and economic power during the construction phase, aimed to add steamships, which it considered as a matter of security and prestige, to its inventory by purchasing them and by installing steam engines on existing or under construction sailing ships. With the introduction of steamships into the inventory, the coal needed as an energy source was procured from European countries, especially England. In this study, the types of coal used in the Ottoman Navy during the transition from sailing vessels to steamships and its areas of use, the ways in which coal was procured, the problems encountered during the procurement process and the Ottoman Empire’s approach to the problems are discussed using archival sources. © 2025, Osman Kose. Problem-solving skills and perceived social support as predictors of relationship stability
The primary aim of this study is to investigate the predictive roles of individuals' social problem-solving skills and perceived social support on the stability of romantic relationships. Relationship stability in this research is conceptualized through four sub-dimensions: relationship satisfaction, investment in the relationship, attractiveness of alternatives, and commitment. Grounded in the Investment Model, this study integrates individual coping capacities (problem-solving abilities) with environmental psychosocial resources (perceived social support) to present a multidimensional understanding of relationship maintenance. Utilizing a correlational research design, the sample comprised 432 undergraduate students enrolled at Osmaniye Korkut Ata University during the Spring semester of the 2023–2024 academic year. Participants were selected through a combination of criterion and convenience sampling techniques. Inclusion criteria required individuals to be in a romantic relationship for at least six months. Data were collected through the Personal Information Form, the Investment Model Scale, the Social Problem-Solving Inventory – Short Form, and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. Both face-to-face and online survey methods were employed. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple and hierarchical regression analyses were conducted. In the hierarchical regression models, problem-solving skills were entered first, followed by perceived social support, allowing for examination of the incremental variance explained by each predictor on the sub-dimensions of relationship stability. Findings indicated that both problem-solving skills and perceived social support were significantly associated with all sub-dimensions of relationship stability. Specifically, these variables were positively correlated with relationship satisfaction, investment, and commitment, and negatively correlated with the attractiveness of alternatives. Regression results confirmed that both predictors significantly accounted for variance in all four outcomes. Notably, perceived social support contributed independently to the models and emerged as a stronger predictor than problem-solving skills, particularly for satisfaction and commitment dimensions. These results suggest that romantic relationship stability is influenced not only by internal relational dynamics but also by individual psychological competencies and external support systems. While the findings support the original structure of the Investment Model, incorporating individual and contextual variables enhances the explanatory power of the model. Therefore, the study offers an extended, multidimensional framework for understanding relationship maintenance. From an applied perspective, the findings emphasize the importance of integrating interpersonal skills training and social support enhancement strategies in psychological counseling and family therapy practices. Particularly in university settings, intervention programs that strengthen young adults' coping skills and social networks may contribute to healthier and more enduring romantic relationships
