The article explores embodied dimensions of intercultural learning, through group interviews with seven Swedish upper secondary school students who participated in a dance exchange with a Kenyan cultural school. The concept of ‘embodied learning’ emphasizes that intercultural learning in the dance exchange takes place in the encounter between embodied experiences and discursive framings. The study analyses how the participants together navigate, negotiate and create meaning around coexisting layers of differences and similarities in the narratives of the dance encounter. In their narratives, the importance of a common interest in dance for constructing a common belonging as ‘dancers’ is evident. At the same time, the participants also underline differences in dance styles and attitudes towards choreography as significant. Through the dance encounters, they have also gained a concrete, embodied experience of the different spatial and material conditions of dance. Finally, the analysis shows how the experience of dancing together creates conditions for experiences of affinities, and how young people’s embodied dance encounters move along, across and beyond boundaries of ‘us’ and ‘them’
The Child and Religious Studies (RS) for a Sustainable Future : The Transformation of Religious Studies: Towards the Incorporation of Sustainable Development Ideas in Swedish Primary Schools from the Late Twentieth Century Onwards
This investigation aims to determine the historical and pedagogical foundations of students’ sustainable development formation in Swedish primary schools during their Religious Studies (RS) as a part of social and cultural education from 1900 onwards. The aim is to deal with important questions about the history of RS – general points of education for sustainable development; RS for implementation of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in Sweden (focusing on the history of the issue); educational RS potential in Swedish primary schools for implementation of ESD (focusing on the current stage of development); the ways to improve implementation of ESD during RS in Swedish primary school (authors’ opinions)
Young people who commit crimes : A qualitative study on what social workers view as risk factors for juvenile delinquency, the work with these young people and cooperation with other actors
The purpose of this study was to examine social workers' professional experiences with young people who commit crimes and what factors they perceive can influence the young people to commit crimes. The study also aims to investigate how the social workers work with these young people and what the collaboration with other actors looks like. To answer this, a qualitative method has been used and four social workers, three of whom are field assistants and one social secretary, have been interviewed. The theories used for this study were theories of social ties, systems theory, liberal explanations and the consumer society. The results of the study revealed themes of social environment and school, exclusion and status hunting, social media and music, and home conditions as factors that the social workers perceived as risk factors for young people committing crimes. The themes that arose about the social workers' work in this area were the social workers' work with young people and cooperation with other actors, and cooperation and support for parents. It also emerged from the results that there are sometimes difficulties in the work and that the best interests of the child did not always come first, and that the collaboration with other actors sometimes did not work as intended
Entering the grey zone of aging between health and disease : a critical phenomenological account
Phenomenological analyses of ageing and old age have examined themes such as alterity, finitude, and time, not seldom from the perspective of “healthy” aging. Phenomenologists have also offered detailed analyses of lived experiences of illness including lived experiences of dementia. This article offers a phenomenological account of what we label as entering the grey zone of aging between “healthy” aging and aging with a disease. This account is developed through a qualitative phenomenological philosophy analysis of elderly persons’ lived experiences of being tested for dementia through primary care in Sweden, i.e., within a cultural context where dementia commonly is understood as a frightening a loss of self even though this understanding also is questioned. To enter this grey zone of aging, we argue, does not dissolve dynamic self-becoming but can involve an experience of oneself as being old. Further, in the grey zone, the self experiences itself as neither fully healthy nor as having a disease, and as needing to negotiate and live this ambiguity. To enter this grey zone is to enter an affectively charged, sociocultural and medicalized zone, and while the self can still act in different ways within it, staying in the grey zone can result in a re-orientation in the self’s mode of being, in ways that are thoroughly beyond its control. To stay in the grey zone can have detrimental effects on the self, even though the self does not have a disease: the self can become “stuck” in a reflective mode of attending to embodiment, aging, health, and disease
Does early childhood multilingualism lead to enhanced executive functioning in early adulthood? : A study examining inhibitory control (Stroop effect) in Swedish university students
Aims and objectives: The paper describes a study whose objective was to find whether there are any differences in inhibitory control measured with the Stroop test between Swedish early childhood (EC) monolingual and EC (bi-) multilingual university students in the language which is not their EC language and whether one can observe a relationship between the perceived proficiency in the subjects’ mother tongues and their Stroop Effect. Methodology: The analyses were conducted on a cohort of 105 students (41 EC monolinguals and 64 EC multilinguals) who took the Stroop test, the results of which (Stroop Effect) were compared for both the groups. A comparison was also made for multilinguals’ perceived proficiency in their mother tongues. Data and analysis: The data obtained via questionnaires and from a computerized version of the Stroop test were compared for EC monolinguals/EC multilinguals and evaluated statistically. Findings/conclusion: The results show no statistically significant difference in the inhibitory control measured by the Stroop test between the EC monolinguals and EC multilinguals. The only significant difference the analysis found between the groups is in reaction times, as the EC multilinguals reacted faster in both congruent and incongruent conditions. The analysis conducted among the EC multilinguals does not indicate any relationship between the perceived proficiency in their mother tongues and Stroop effect. Originality and implication: The findings contribute to a recent debate questioning cognitive early adulthood advantages of being an EC multilingual. Unlike the majority of other studies investigating inhibitory control, the Stroop test in this study was conducted in young adults and in the language (learnt at school and through extracurricular activities) in which all the students were on approximately the same proficiency level. The findings also bear relevance to future research on the relationship between inhibitory control and academic performance in young adults
This study examines how digitalization and automation affect the role of the auditor in auditfirms operating in Sweden, with a particular focus on the differences between larger firmssuch as the Big 4 and smaller audit firms. This is observed through qualitative interviewswith certified public accountants and is based on a TAM and RBT analysis. For larger audit firms with advanced digital tools that include data analytics and real-timeauditing, efficiency and precision are enabled. This has transformed the auditor's role intostrategic advice along with proactive risk management. Automation has reduced the numberof manual and repetitive tasks, freeing up time to focus on more value-creating activities suchas strategic work, problem solving and client relationships. For small audit firms, however, the challenges are different. Their limited resources and lackof technology create obstacles to the implementation of advanced technology, whichnegatively affects their competitiveness. However, they have opportunities to combine thebenefits of digitalization with personal contact with clients, thereby maintaining theirrelevance in the market. The study also addresses other ethical and social issues related to digitalization, such as datasecurity, and the balance between automation and human judgment. Finally, it addresses thenecessity of continuous professional development to enable auditors to adapt to a digitalizedwork environment. The final section of the study discusses suggestions for further researchinto technologies such as AI and blockchain, and their impact on the audit profession in the long term.
This study explores the paradox between creativity and standardization, particularly withincreative industries, in this study the architecture industry, and other industries with a specificfocus on ISO 9001 certification. While standardization is associated with traits such as efficiencyand legitimacy, it can conflict with the creative freedom, flexibility, and autonomy highly valuedin cultural and creative work. Drawing on theories of creativity and institutional frameworks, theresearch examines how attitudes toward standardization vary across roles and industries withdiffering levels of creativity. Through a quantitative approach using survey methodology, thestudy evaluates, besides creativity, the impact of factors such as incitements and implementationprocesses on these attitudes. Results indicate a nuanced relationship, with more negativeperceptions observed among individuals in creative roles compared to those in less creative roles. This research also contributes to understanding how organizations navigate in the paradox offostering creativity while maintaining structured operations. By using an institutional theory lens, this study discovers and explains decoupling strategies used by organizations to handle theconflict between formal and informal routines connected to ISO 9001
