Translanguaging as scaffolding in Teaching : An intervention study focusing on newly arrived students' language usage and language comprehension as well as participation in Swedish
This study investigates the impact of translanguaging as scaffolding in teaching to support language acquisition and participation among newly arrived students in Swedish classrooms. Through thematic and linguistic analysis of collected data, the study explores if translanguaging fosters language understanding and usage among students with varying levels of proficiency in Swedish. The findings demonstrate that translanguaging helps students draw on their entire linguistic repertoire, enhancing their ability to comprehend and use the Swedish language. Additionally, the study highlights the role of peer and teacher support in encouraging active participation and the use of multiple languages as learning resources. The results suggest that translanguaging not only aids language development but also promotes inclusive and equitable classroom environments
Spatial influence on the distribution of downhill skiers in Sweden
This study investigates empirically how natural snow depth affects the number of downhill skiers. Data include the number of skier visits for the 32 largest ski resorts in Sweden from the 1998/1999 to the 2018/2019 seasons. Results of spatial dynamic estimations show that an increase in natural snow depth in the ski area has a significant negative impact on the number of skier visits in the short term, although the magnitude is small. This implies that a snow deficit leads to increased demand for downhill skiing both directly and indirectly (in the neighbouring areas). The variable snow depth in the neighbouring ski areas is not significantly different from zero, indicating that no spatial substitution takes place. There is, however, a strong positive relationship between skier visits to neighbouring areas, revealing that ski resorts are complements rather than substitutes. The long-term influence of snow depth is not significant, implying that the ski business is independent of variations in snow depth. Instead, the number of skier visits is mainly determined by past visits, revealing a high degree of persistence
Forest Conservation and Carbon Credit Projects by Global North in Manyara, Tanzania : Neocolonial and Dependency Theory Approach
Climate change and forest deforestation pose significant threats to our way of life. In response to this challenge, various countries, companies, and nations in the Global North have launched initiatives for forest reservation and carbon credit in the Global South. This thesis examines the impacts of carbon trading projects on forest-dependent communities in Manyara, Tanzania, focusing on environmental conservation efforts and socio-cultural justice for local people. It is based on a qualitative field study that includes interviews with community members and key stakeholders. The findings indicate that while carbon trading projects can generate economic benefits and contribute to forest biodiversity, they also apply significant restrictions on local communities' access to forest resources, leading to socio-cultural inequality and increasing dependency.Institutionen för naturvetenskap, miljö och teknik, School of Natural Sciences, Technology and Environmental Studie
Beyond the Purchase : Exploring the Dynamics of Microtransactions Among Swedish Gamers
This study explores the behavior of Swedish gamers regarding microtransactions in the Free-To-Play model. It focuses on their attitudes towards in-game purchases and explores the psychological, ethical, and social factors influencing their engagement. The study used qualitative research methods, including semi-structured interviews with nine Swedish gamers. The findings reveal that community norms and peer pressure significantly impact microtransaction engagement, especially among younger players. The study also identifies a psychological barrier that, once crossed, triggers increased spending. Furthermore, the research highlights the controversial role of loot boxes, their association with gambling, and the psychological effects they have on players. The results from this study suggest the need for regulatory oversight and ethical monetization practices. Additionally, the study reveals that premium in-game currencies obscure real-world costs, which can impact spending behavior and raise ethical concerns about transparency. The research suggests that game developers and policymakers should prioritize fair and transparent strategies that uphold player autonomy and well-being by considering the complex interplay between player experience, microtransaction design, and ethical considerations
The aim of this intervention study is to investigate the use of concept maps as a pedagogical tool to promote discussions around subject-specific concepts in history education. Additionally, the study seeks to explore students' experiences with using concept maps. The intervention study is implemented with fourth-grade pupils. This study answers the following questions: · In what ways can concept maps facilitate discussions around subject-specific concepts? · How do pupils experience the work with concept maps? · What is the relationship between the collected material and pupils' experiences? The intervention study employs a Lesson Study approach and incorporates two qualitative methods: observations, group interviews, and analysis of both first and second text-talk sessions between nine pupils in two groups. The study's theoretical framework is based on concept maps, participation, and interaction. Participation has been divided into three different levels based on the collected material to facilitate the analysis. The levels of participation in the study are categorized as follows: at the first level, pupils remain silent and passively attend the conversation, offering no personal input or opinions. Moving to the second level, pupils engage to varying degrees, sometimes affirming others' ideas without expressing their own. Finally, at the third level, pupils actively contribute to the discussion by sharing their own thoughts, expanding on others' ideas, and engaging in reciprocal dialogue. The results showed that integration of concept maps increased the students' understanding and discussion around subject-specific concepts. They could connect different concepts and analyze their relationships, indicating an improvement in their conceptual understanding and knowledge. The pupils' enhanced engagement, supported by positive experiences with concept maps, is further confirmed by discussion observations. This correlation between student experiences and collected material supports the study's credibility. This underscores the significance of concept maps as a pedagogical tool for advancing understanding of subject-specific concepts in history education.
Background: With the increasing emphasis on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), sustainability managers have become vital in integrating sustainability principles into core business operations. Stakeholders are pressuring organizations to adopt more environmentally friendly practices, leading to the emergence of corporate sustainability as a critical aspect of business strategy. With the introduction of regulations like the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) in the EU, organizations face challenges in meeting the growing demands for sustainability reporting, highlighting the pivotal role of sustainability managers in navigating these complexities and driving organizational change towards sustainability goals. Purpose: The purpose of this research study is to examine sustainability managers as an emerging profession, including their perspectives on the development of their job role and its impact on organizational structure. Additionally, the study aims to identify and analyze the competencies and skills required to effectively perform the role of a sustainability manager. Method: The study adopts a qualitative research method with a phenomenographic approach. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with ten sustainability managers from various industries in Sweden to gather in-depth insights. Conclusion: Sustainability efforts should be integrated within existing organizational structures rather than creating separate departments solely dedicated to sustainability issues. Sustainability managers navigate a complex and constantly evolving role shaped by legal requirements, societal norms, and ethical considerations, which legitimizes their position within the organization. Sustainability managers have gained increased influence within management teams. This multifaceted role requires a comprehensive skill set, including technical expertise, business acumen, and the ability to navigate legal frameworks. Additionally, important personal attributes such as communication, motivation, and ethical leadership are emphasized to effectively drive organizational change towards sustainability goals

The Use of Instagram by E-commerce Companies : A qualitative and quantitative study on how e-commerce companies can use Instagram to attract consumers and build customer loyalty
The purpose of this study is to explore and identify effective strategies for e-commerce companies to use Instagram to attract consumers and build customer loyalty. The study also focuses on examining what type of content is most engaging for followers and determining the optimal frequency of interaction with followers. To answer the research questions, a combined methodological approach was used, including both qualitative semi-structured interviews and a quantitative survey. The qualitative interviews were conducted with business owners who use Instagram to promote customer engagement and loyalty, while the quantitative survey gathered data from a broader respondent group to complement the qualitative insights. The theoretical framework of the study is based on Social Identity Theory (SIT), Electronic Word of Mouth (Ewom) communication, Customer Relationship Management (CRM), and theories of customer loyalty and social media marketing. SIT explains how individuals' self-perception is shaped by their belonging to various social groups, which brands can use to create strong communities and loyalty. Ewom and CRM theories highlight the importance of personal recommendations and managing customer relationships to increase loyalty and engagement. The analysis of collected data shows that e-commerce companies can effectively attract consumers by creating and sharing content that reflects their core values and tells the company's story, promoting authenticity and trust. The majority of respondents believe that the most effective content on Instagram includes user-generated material, interactive live broadcasts, and detailed stories about the origin and use of products. This content creates a deeper emotional connection to the brand. The study also found that to maximize customer loyalty, e-commerce companies should interact with their followers daily by regularly posting content and promptly responding to comments and inquiries. This regular interaction helps keep the brand current and shows that the company values its customers
