The after-school Educare as counterbalance to a future "knowledge school" : A qualitative study on the future changing conditions of the after-school Educare

    No full text
This qualitative study examines how after-school care staff perceive and manage their pedagogical mission in a school climate with an increased focus on discipline, order, and academic results, inspired by the school policy debate featuring elements of "No-Excuses" pedagogy. The study was conducted through semi-structured interviews with eight after-school care staff at five municipal schools.  The results show a need for an increased focus on social skills and self-regulation. Staff actively work to manage the friction in the transition from the highly structured school day. The study's central conclusion is that the most important value of the after-school center is to be a place for social training, emotional affirmation, and to give students the opportunity to develop self-regulation and autonomy – a role that becomes increasingly vital as a counterweight in an academicized future.

The Representation of Help Givers in First Aid Instruction Materials: A Multimodal Reception Study

    No full text
This study explores how far a variety of choices in the visualization of help givers in first aid instruction materials can be associated the perception of these help givers in viewers. We present a reception study, in which we analyze 40 images from a first aid corpus by focusing on variations in their image type, perspective, camera angle, shot size, color, facial expression visibility, and gender. A total of 107 participants evaluated these images using 20 pairs of trait adjectives on a 6-point scale. Results indicate that drawings had a slightly higher positive composite score than photographs. Bird’s-eye perspectives, front-facing camera angles, and full-body shots all yielded a higher positive composite score, which suggests a preference for visual cues related to directness and completeness. Color images were favored over grayscale. Interestingly, images with obscured facial expressions were rated higher, potentially due to reduced emotional cues allowing for individual interpretation. Images portraying female help givers consistently received higher positive scores than male help givers. These findings show the relation between visual design and the perceived positive characteristics of help givers. The insights can be useful in the process of optimizing first aid material design

The aim of this study is to examine the possibilities that Mats Berggren’s novel Din syster måste dö (2017) offers for discussing honor-related violence and oppression, and how the novel relates to the school’s values-based work. In order to address this aim, research questions have been formulated concerning representations of honor-related violence and oppression, representations of the relationship between age and gender, and how the novel can be used in discussion and teaching. To answer the aim and research questions, a literary interpretation of the novel has been conducted, and a communication model has been used to identify and analyze relevant passages. The theoretical frameworks applied in the analysis are intersectionality, with a focus on the categories of age and gender, as well as the concept of didactic potential, which is used to examine the novel’s educational possibilities. The analysis shows that the novel depicts several forms of honor-related violence and oppression, including both physical and psychological violence, and illustrates how such violence affects different characters in the narrative. Furthermore, the analysis demonstrates that age and gender have a significant impact on the power structures portrayed in the novel, as well as on the construction of different family roles. Through the close reading, the didactic potential of the novel has been analyzed. The novel shows strong potential as a didactic tool for discussion and teaching about honor-related violence and oppression, but its use requires preparation and prior knowledge on the part of both teachers and students. The findings of this study indicate that Mats Berggren’s Din syster måste dö (2017) is a suitable didactic tool for teaching lower secondary school students about core values issues, particularly honor-related violence and oppression

Consent in fiction; A literary and didactic analysis of the anthology Höra pulsen slå (2022) in Swedish language education.  The aim of this qualitative study is twofold. Firstly, it examines how consent is represented in the anthology Höra pulsen slå (2022). Secondly, it discusses how this anthology can be used in a didactic context within Swedish language education. The study also seeks to demonstrate that fiction may function as a pedagogical tool for integrating the knowledge area of sexuality, consent, and relationships into Swedish teaching. Increased societal interest in issues of consent, along with recent social developments, has raised questions about how current educational practices can be improved by using fiction as a platform for discussion between teachers and students. The background section addresses both the goals and requirements of the school system, as well as existing shortcomings in teaching within this area. Previous research presents various scholarly perspectives on the possibilities for integration, the role of fiction, and the development of consent education in schools in relation to societal change. The literary analysis highlights how short stories from the anthology portray consent, while the didactic discussion explores how these portrayals can be applied in Swedish language education, thereby emphasizing the anthology’s didactic potential. The analysis is based on a hermeneutic interpretative approach and is divided into two main parts: verbal and non-verbal consent, and the right to say no. The didactic discussion highlights the pedagogical potential of fiction in relation to teaching and examines how literature can serve as an entry point for consent education. This demonstrates the potential for interdisciplinary integration between the knowledge area of sexuality, consent, and relationships and the subject of Swedish.

Roma Migration and the Cumulative Causation of Diverging Policy Responses in Scandinavia

    No full text
Since 2007, Scandinavia has emerged as a new destination for Romanian Roma engaging in circular migration for begging and street work. Using policy documents from parliamentary debates in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, survey data on Romanian migrants in Stockholm, Oslo, and Copenhagen, and qualitative fieldwork in Scandinavia and Romania, this article explores the dynamic relationship between Scandinavian policy responses and migrant selection and adaptations. First, we demonstrate how the Scandinavian countries differ in their approach to migration for begging as a policy problem, resulting in different contexts of reception. Second, we show that these different contexts of reception have given rise to differences in the selection and adaptations of migrant beggars and street workers in each of the three capital cities. Third, we hypothesize that the relationship between policy responses and migrant adaptations should be conceptualized as a process of cumulative causation, where pre-existing policy differences are reinforced through positive feedback

Different yet complementary : A systematic literature review on data journalism in visualization research and journalism studies

    No full text
This article surveys and compares literature on data journalism from two areas of inquiry: journalism studies and visualization research. As digital interfaces become an important access point for news, journalism and visualization scholars have begun to share a common research interest: data journalism. Given their radically different traditions and histories, these areas follow very different rules in how the topic is approached. The result is two parallel scholarships on data journalism with little points of contact. Arguably, developing research space for encounters and exchange of the two is an opportunity for expanding the academic discourse on data journalism. This study aims at opening this space of exchange through a systematic literature review. 121 articles, published between 2010 and 2023, are analyzed. Findings show that the two areas of research approach data journalism with very different aspirations. In relation to data journalism, journalism studies and visualization research could be compared with Lazersfeld’s distinction between critical and administrative research. These aspects cause various differences at an epistemic level, namely what, how and when knowledge about data journalism is produced.

Hållbarhetsrapportering och dess betydelse för privata investerare

    No full text
Climate change and increased demands for transparency have made sustainability reporting a central part of corporate communication. Regulations and frameworks such as GRI and CSRD have been developed to create more comparable and reliable reporting that can be used by various stakeholders, where investors constitute an important group. Previous research shows that investors are often influenced by both personal values and thought patterns, which can form an investment philosophy among investors. This is explained with the help of theories such as Behavioral Finance Theory (BFT) and the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). These theories can explain how sustainability information is interpreted and has significance. They can then be used in different ways in investment decisions. Investors can be influenced by personal values and thought patterns, and the question is whether these values and thought patterns can have significance due to other underlying factors. These can be company related, individual and social related factors. For example It can be which gender investors have or what level of knowledge they have regarding sustainability information. This together forms the study’s problem formulation. The purpose of the study is to examine which factors can have significance for investors use of sustainability information in investment decisions, with the help of an investment philosophy. The study uses a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design and a convenience sample. Data have been collected through a digital survey directed at Swedish private shareholders. The results show that only the factors age and knowledge demonstrate a significant relationship with the use of sustainability information in investment decision, while several other assumed relationships can not be shown to have significance within the scope of this study’s sample and method

A comparison between leadership styles in high performance sports and business industry : How can they inspire each other?

    No full text
This study examines leadership between high performance sports and the business industry, where leadership is a central function in creating motivation and commitment among individuals within the group. The purpose of this study is to examine how the business industry and high performance sports leadership at team level can influence each other. The study also aims to examine how the methods used in these industries can increase motivation and contribute to development in the form of learning, commitment and performance.  The following question has been the basis for this study: How can leadership styles used in  business industry and high performance sport possibly improve and inspire each other through the exchange of strategies for motivation, competence- and goal development?  This study uses a qualitative method, based on semistructured interviews. The interview questions have been based on the purpose of the study, the question and the theoretical framework. The sample consists of a criteria based selection that was applied partly using snowball sampling. In this study, the hermeneutic perspective has been applied to process the empirical material. In conclusion, the study shows that relationships and flexible leadership are fundamental. Where the reader adapts to the context and the person to achieve trust, motivation and opportunities for skill development in both high performance sports and business industries. Both high performance sports and business industries tend to show a strong shift away from the transactional leadership and instead show a clear use of transformative coaching and situational leadership.

    No full text

    No full text
This bachelor’s thesis analyzes how the relationships between interaction, electronic word of mouth(eWOM), and satisfaction on social media relate to consumer loyalty within the sportswear industry, focusing on the brands Nike and Adidas. The study applies a quantitative research method based on asurvey conducted among students at Södertörn University. In the empirical analysis, consumer loyaltyis operationalized as purchase frequency, reflecting the behavioral dimension of loyalty. The resultsfrom the multiple regression analysis indicate that interaction, eWOM, and satisfaction displaypositive coefficients; however, these relationships are not statistically significant when age andincome are included as control variables. In contrast, income shows a clear and statistically significantassociation with purchase frequency. Overall, the findings suggest that actual purchasing behavior inthe studied sample is more strongly associated with economic conditions than with engagement onsocial media. The study contributes to a more nuanced understanding of consumer loyalty byhighlighting the importance of context, sample characteristics, and how loyalty is operationalized inempirical research
