    No full text

    No full text

Exiling of offenders to society, state, and church – criminals and free thinkers – was not uncommon as a form of punishment across Europe during early modern times. Such penalties: exiling, banishment, or ostracism, were used in many countries as late as in the early 19th century. In Sweden, ostracism during the 19th century was mostly applied to nonconformist religious activities and convertites from the established Evangelical-Lutheran church, firmly associated with the state. Humanization of Swedish criminal law and abolition of ostracism was finally manifested in reformation of the criminal code in 1864. A new penalty system was introduced, from previous body and capital punishments towards prison and fines. In this study, the process of terminating ostracism was examined in relation to the prolonged legal debate and ongoing fight for religious freedom. These processes, as indicators of ongoing civilization and secularization in Sweden, were analyzed in terms of ideal and legal debates, leading actors, political standpoints, and compromises. Primary sources were archive materials from the old four estate parliament and newspaper articles during the period 1809–1864, focusing on the last decade. Ongoing secularization was observed in this study, as was a civilizing process of the Swedish society. The emergence of secular, liberal-political and legal driving forces were  main agents in changing the criminal code, not primarily the church or religious humanizing efforts. Rather, church representatives tried to preserve ostracism as a way to protect the association of church and state in these times of political, social and economic transformation of Sweden

Urban Green Space and Stress Relief : An Exploratory Study of the Migrant Community Resident in Farsta District, Sweden

    No full text
This study explored the perceptions of a working-age group that identifies as migrants regarding urban green spaces impact on their mental health and stress levels. A qualitative approach was used, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 participants residing in Farsta, a district in the southern part of Stockholm (Sweden). The thematic analysis revealed the emergence of four key themes relating to green space: emotional and psychological benefits, escaping urban overload, connection to nature and personal roots, and social and recreational activities. Participants described green space as vital for alleviating stress, fostering emotional balance, and evoking memories of home. Unlike prior research emphasizing social interactions as primary for stress management, participants in this study predominantly favored solitary and introspective activities, such as walking and meditation, highlighting the role of green spaces as individualized therapeutic settings. Proximity and accessibility were identified as critical enablers of regular use, while sensory experiences, such as observing greenery or hearing natural sounds, contributed to stress reduction. Additionally, seasonal adaptation and indoor connection to nature highlighted coping strategies during winter, including creating indoor green corners and watching nature-related media. These insights demonstrate the continued importance of maintaining a connection to nature even when outdoor access is limited by seasonal changes. Future research should explore the role of seasonal changes and long-term impacts of green spaces on stress relief.

With the rise of commercialization and digitalization, sports sponsorship has become an increasingly common marketing channel. However, a major challenge remains: the goals behind companies' decisions to sponsor sports clubs are often unclear. This study investigates the objectives of companies that sponsor football clubs in the Swedish Allsvenskan. It also examines how these goals relate to sponsorship contract duration and the level of engagement required. In addition, the study explores how companies measure and evaluate the effectiveness of their sponsorships. To guide the analysis, a theoretical framework is applied that includes Brand Equity, Relationship Marketing, Commitment-Trust Theory, Return on Investment (ROI), and the A-ERIC model. The study adopts a triangulated methodology combining quantitative and qualitative methods. Surveys were used for the quantitative part, while the qualitative data was collected through a semi-structured interview with an expert in sports sponsorship. The quantitative sample consisted of 85 companies sponsoring Allsvenskan football clubs. The findings show that company objectives vary considerably and suggest that sponsorship is not always driven by business logic alone. In many cases an emotional connection motivates the decision to sponsor a football club. The quantitative analysis found no statistically significant correlations between goals, contract length, measurement methods, and engagement levels. However, the qualitative insights suggest that such relationships should exist. Overall, the results indicate that the size of the company and the scale of the sponsorship investment have a greater influence on these dynamics. Notably, a large proportion of companies reported not measuring or evaluating their sponsorships at all

In a labor market that is constantly evolving, leadership is essential forfostering organizational adaptability and ensuring long-termcompetitiveness. Previous research has shown that personality traits maypredict individuals tendencies to pursue leadership roles. However, fewstudies have explored this within the retail sector, a dynamic environmentcharacterized by high demands, customer focus, and hierarchical structures. The aim of this study was to investigate how personality traits according tothe Five-Factor Model relate to self-assessed leadership ambition amongemployees in the Swedish retail industry. A quantitative, cross-sectionalsurvey design was used. A total of 130 participants with current or formerexperience in retail completed a digital questionnaire consisting of avalidated personality scale and custom-developed items measuringleadership ambition. Correlation and multiple regression analyses wereconducted. Results showed that extraversion was positively and neuroticismnegatively associated with leadership ambition, while other traits did notshow significant relationships. The findings partially confirmed thehypothesis that personality traits predict leadership ambition. The studyconcludes that certain traits, particularly extraversion, may be relevant forunderstanding who aspires to leadership in the retail sector. However, ambition is also influenced by contextual factors, such as workplaceenvironment and cultural norms

From Shameful and Monstrous Portrayal to Empowerment : A Feminist Disability Study on How Lauren's Hyperempathy and Juliette´s Deadly Touch Give a Nuanced Perspective on Gender-Based Opression in Parable of the Sower and Shatter Me

    No full text
This essay explores the intersection of disability and gender in Octavia E. Butler’s novel Parable of the Sower and Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi, with a focus on the female protagonists Lauren and Juliette. The essay examines how dystopian societies marginalize disabled women and how these women reclaim their autonomy through writing. This study argues that Lauren’s hyperempathy and Juliette’s deadly touch expose patriarchal and ableist systems’ oppression on the female body and the disabled body, ultimately revealing how they resist and reclaim their autonomy through writing. To analyze this, the essay uses feminist disability theory to explain how disability and gender intersect and contribute to the oppression Lauren and Juliette face. Hélène Cixous’ concept on écriture feminine is also used in the analysis to show how their writing becomes a tool of resistance and identity reclamation. Additionally, the essay uses Paulo Freire’s theory of critical literacy to argue that Parable of the Sower and Shatter Me hold significant pedagogical value, offering opportunities to foster students’ critical thinking and awareness of social injustices. By combining these theoretical frameworks, the findings show that Lauren and Juliette are rejected by society, not only because of their disabilities but also their gender. Their narratives show power dynamics where the men in their lives impose guilt and shame on them. The findings also highlight that writing is crucial for both female protagonists’ self-development, showing how they reclaim their voices, resist oppression and turn their disabilities into strengths through their personal writings.

The Conditional Subject Position : A study of Transracial Adoptees and the Zone of Non-Being

    No full text
This thesis uses Frantz Fanon’s concept of the zone of non-being to analyse how the subject position of transracial adoptees in Sweden is shaped within the colonial structures of racial capitalism and whiteness. The study examines how ontological negation, discursive silencing, and conditional inclusion function as mechanisms through which adoptee subjectivity is constrained and made legible. Rather than interpreting autobiographical narratives as expressions of individual psychology, five publicly available testimonies—presented as podcasts, interviews, poetry, and monologues—are read as discursive sites where structural violence becomes visible.Following a theory-driven, abductive method grounded in discourse theory and Black thought, the analysis moves through two analytical lenses: Body and Affect. These lenses trace how subjectivity is regulated through embodied and emotional registers under conditions of racialised governance. The analysis identifies three central structural mechanisms: silence, as both theme and ontological constraint; adaptation, as a demand to conform to dominant norms; and a third, unnamed pattern—an affective and narrative movement that resists categorisation and exceeds available frameworks
