From Corporate Social Responsibility to Employee Mental Well-Being: The Differential Role of Social and Psychological Capital in Companies' Rural Depopulation Areas

    No full text
This work was supported by Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, DESP_LEG-V1417.In response to the demographic issue posed by rural depopulation, literature has emphasized the necessity of exploring how corporate social responsibility (CSR) improves employees' mental well-being and strengthens the competitiveness and development of rural enterprises, thereby attracting and retaining residents in vulnerable areas. This study examines how CSR fosters social and psychological capital, leading to improved mental well-being among employees. Data were collected through an online survey (n = 277) targeting employees and residents of rural businesses in municipalities facing depopulation risk. The results show that CSR has a positive and significant influence on employees' social and psychological capital. Social and psychological capital positively and significantly impacts employees' mental well-being. However, CSR significantly influences well-being only when it is mediated by social and psychological capital. This study highlights the importance of CSR management in generating high levels of social and psychological capital. It also contributes to human resource management by identifying social and psychological capital as key mechanisms for achieving higher levels of employee mental well-being and ensuring the positive impact of CSR. These insights provide valuable guidance for managers in implementing initiatives to improve business performance and address social challenges

Association between hypertension and selfperception of health status: Findings from a decade population-based survey in Spanish adults

Objective This study, conducted in the community setting, aimed to assess and discuss how a diagnosis of arterial hypertension affects self-perceived health status, examining the association with potential explanatory factors and comparing its impact with that of other chronic conditions. Methods Cross-sectional observational study using the 2011–2012 and 2017 Spanish National Health Surveys and the 2020 European Health Interview Survey for Spain as data sources. Health perception was categorised as very good, good, fair, bad, or very bad. The independent variables recorded demographic, social, clinical, and lifestyle information. The associations between variables were evaluated via a generalisation of an ordered logit model. Results A total of 66,168 subjects were included (21,007 in 2011, 23,089 in 2017, and 22,072 in 2020), 21.6% of whom were diagnosed with hypertension, 51.3% were women, PLOS One | https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0322577 May 7, 2025 2 / 11 and the average age was 48.24 (18.89) years. Around one in five people in the general population reported a “very good” health status. The probability of reporting a “very good” health condition decreased with a diagnosis of hypertension (6.2%; CI 95%: 3.1–9.3%) and hypertensive medication (4.5%; CI 95%: 1.8–7.3%). Such associations were independent of age, gender, social group, other chronic conditions or limitations, or various lifestyle habits. In contrast, no association was found with reporting a “bad” or “very bad” health status. Conclusion Being diagnosed with hypertension and prescription of antihypertensive medication are associated with a lower probability of reporting a “very good” health status, irrespective of other comorbidities or complications related to the diagnosis

Experimental study of the response to fatigue compression and indirect tensile loading in high‐technology concrete

This project received funding from ArcelorMittal Global R&D–ArcelorMittal Fibers, Luxembourg. This study examines the fatigue behavior of high-technology concrete reinforced with steel fibers under compressive and indirect tensile loading through an extensive experimental campaign. Compression fatigue tests, conducted at varying stress levels and constant frequency, revealed a probabilistic fatigue life modeled by a Weibull distribution, with significantly longer lifetimes observed at lower stress ranges. The secondary strain rate per cycle exhibited a linear relationship with cycles to failure, consistent with Sparks and Menzies’law across all stress levels. Indirect tensile fatigue tests employed a two-phase approach, highlighting Weibull-distributed fatigue life during the second damage phase. Digital image correlation (DIC) captured strain fields, showing that cracks initiated at the matrix, propagated in mode I fracture patterns from the specimen center to the load application points, and stabilized as strain accumulation plateaued. Failure mechanisms were dominated by excessive crack opening and crushing wedge formation at the specimen ends. A novel indirect tensile test configuration provided detailed insights into fatigue processes, emphasizing the importance of strain evolution and crack propagation dynamics in high-technology concrete. The findings validate Sparks and Menzies’law as a robust framework for correlating fatigue life with strain rates and refine experimental methodologies for dynamic concrete behavio

Boards of Directors That Transform: A Study on How Specific Architectural Components Drive ESG Performance

    No full text
This study explores the potential influence of key components of the board of directors' architecture on ESG outcomes. Specifically, we focus on the effects of demographic components (gender and cultural diversity), structural and compositional factors (size, CEO-Chair separation, and the presence of independent/non-executive directors), and sustainability incentives. We adopt a contextual resource perspective of board architecture, in which demographic diversity provides cognitive resources, structural features shape monitoring capacity, and sustainability incentives serve as a mechanism to align the directors' interests with sustainability. In this vein, we put forward several hypotheses based on various theoretical lenses used as complementary explanations within an overarching view. We test our hypotheses using data from Thomson Reuters (Refinitiv/Eikon) covering the period 2015–2022 across 20 countries. The final sample size varies from 963 to 5237 large, listed firms (i.e., between 2904 and 25,506 firm-year observations). Our main findings are as follows: First, not all board architectural components significantly influence ESG performance, with some components (independent directors) showing weak effects and others (CEO-Chair separation) showing non-significant effects. Second, a firm's ESG performance significantly improves when there is a greater proportion of non-executive directors, increased cultural diversity among board members (by nationality), and board members receiving sustainability incentives. Third, boards should aim for balanced or moderate representation on gender and size rather than extremes. Finally, our research indicates that no single approach can address all architectural issues related to boards, underscoring the need for an overarching view. We outline the key implications of our findings for managers, policymakers, and investors
