Efficient heuristics for the obnoxious planar p-median problem with variable sizes

TEC-2024/COM-404.The location of obnoxious facilities is an optimization problem with a large social impact. Specifically, the obnoxious facility location problem in the plane with variable sizes (OPPMVS) studies the location of facilities considering that the obnoxious effect is transmitted through the air and depends on the production or service of the facility. In this work, a memetic algorithm is proposed in which the generation of the initial population and the genetic operators have been specifically designed for the target problem. In this approximation of this continuous problem, competitive results have been obtained compared with the state-of-the-art. The proposal has been tested in 21 problem instances provided by the original authors, obtaining the best results in 14 of them with a total deviation of 0.07%. This performance is obtained in an average execution time of 22 s, which improves the best state-of-the-art algorithm by one order of magnitude. These results have been validated with statistical tests
Molecular doping with Phenyl-functionalized Triazatruxene as a Strategy for Trap Passivation in Perovskite Solar Absorbers
The research was funded by 2024/REGING-20235 (Community of Madrid), F1259 projects and Fuenlabrada Engineering School (EIF-URJC) Infrastructure 2024 program, as well as MCIN/AEI/ 10.13039/501100011033 and PID2023-150022NB-I00 projects.Hybrid metal halide perovskite solar cells have rapidly achieved high efficiencies, positioning them as cost-effective candidates for next-generation photovoltaics. However, their inherently high defect density constrains their theoretical potential. Solution processing of hybrid metal halide perovskite absorbers enables optimization via additive engineering, where molecular additives can simultaneously passivate defects, refine the morphology, and improve their structural properties, ultimately enhancing the device performance. This study investigates the incorporation of p-type semiconducting triazatruxene derivatives—functionalized with either three phenyl (5,10,15-triphenyl-10,15-dihydro-5H-diindolo[3,2-a:3’,2’-c]carbazole, 3P-T) or three hexyl (5,10,15-trihexyl-10,15-dihydro-5H-diindolo[3,2-a:3’,2’-c]carbazole, 3H-T) groups—as dopants directly into the MAPbI₃ precursor solution. Even at very low concentrations (10⁻² mM), triazatruxenes dopants significantly influence the morphology, crystallinity, and electronic properties of the perovskite thin films. More importantly, our findings reveal that the phenyl-functionalized molecule induces a measurable defect passivation effect in the films, hindering any carrier recombination pathway aside from band-to-band transitions. This enhances charge carrier transport by reducing its activation energy, Ea, from 0.44 eV to 0.25 eV, thereby improving photocarrier separation and boosting the overall performance of Perovskite Solar Cells. Enhancements in photoluminescence, open-circuit voltage, and test cell efficiency further corroborate these effects. These insights highlight the potential of triazatruxene-based dopants for tuning perovskite film properties and advancing the performance of perovskite solar cells

The Optimal CSR and Sustainability Approach in a Spatial Duopoly: A Comparative Study
In the context of increasing consumer environmental awareness (CEA), firms are progres-sively adopting corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategies that seek to align profitabil-ity with environmental objectives. This paper develops a mathematical model to explore the implications of CSR under two distinct scenarios: one that incorporates both social and environmental impacts and another that focuses solely on environmental concerns. The analysis is situated within a spatial mixed duopoly, where a CSR-oriented firm competes with a purely profit-maximising rival. A game-theoretical framework is employed, in which the CSR firm’s objective function is modelled as a weighted sum of private profits and the environmentally driven welfare of consumers. Equilibrium analysis demonstrates that CSR engagement improves market outcomes relative to a benchmark without CSR and generates positive externalities for the non-CSR firm. Moreover, the scenario prioritising environmental impact alone yields superior sustainability and welfare outcomes for both consumers and firms, despite identical demand and product differentiation conditions. These findings enhance our understanding of how CEA interacts with CSR strategies in imperfectly competitive markets, offering valuable insights for managerial decision-making and the formulation of environmental policy

Hong Kong RGC Postdoctoral Fellowship Scheme of Project (Grant Number: PDFS2425-6S05)This paper introduces Polynomial Graphical Lasso (PGL), a new approach to learning graph structures from nodal signals. Our key contribution lies in modeling the signals as Gaussian and stationary on the graph, enabling the development of a graph learning formulation that combines the strengths of graphical lasso with a more encompassing model. Specifically, we assume that the precision matrix can take any polynomial form of the sought graph, allowing for increased flexibility in modeling nodal relationships. Given the inherent complexity and nonconvexity of the optimization problem, we (i) propose a low-complexity algorithm that alternates between estimating the graph and precision matrices, and (ii) characterize its convergence. We evaluate the performance of PGL through comprehensive numerical simulations using both synthetic and real data, demonstrating its superiority over several alternatives. Overall, this approach presents a significant advancement in graph learning and holds promise for various applications in graph-aware signal analysis and beyond
The translation of fictive neology through the decades: a case study
Los neologismos son un elemento clave en la ciencia ficción y en la construcción de mundos ficticios. Por ende, es imprescindible traducirlos de manera correcta para que la peculiaridad de este género, con sus múltiples capas de creación, se entienda por completo en la cultura de destino. Por su parte, la percepción de la ciencia ficción y sus planteamientos futuristas, donde la tecnología suele desempeñar un papel fundamental, puede haberse alterado en las últimas décadas como consecuencia de los avances en ciencia y tecnología que ha experimentado la sociedad. Este estudio extrae los neologismos que refieren avances científicos y tecnológicos presentes en cuatro novelas de ciencia ficción cuya lengua original es el inglés y en todas sus traducciones y retraducciones hacia el español, crea un corpus contrastivo y analiza si el enfoque de su traducción ha sufrido cambios con el paso del tiempo. Las novelas originales son Brave New World (Aldous Huxley, 1932), Nineteen Eighty-Four (George Orwell, 1949), Fahrenheit 451 (Ray Bradbury, 1953) y Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (Philip K. Dick, 1968)

The crisis in the media industry has led some journalists to explore professional alternatives on platforms like Patreon, Ghost, Medium, and Substack—best known for their newsletter services and member-based paid subscriptions. These platforms operate independently of social media, allowing writers to build and maintain their own communities. This article explores a contemporary model of online literary mediation through a qualitative case study that combines cultural studies approaches with in-depth interviews. Focusing on a platform called Substack, the research analyzes how cultural content—particularly book recommendations and cultural commentary—is produced by journalists and writers. Despite the increasing presence of such content in mass media, this phenomenon remains underexplored in the academic literature.
