How overloaded employees can use resilience and forgiveness resources to overcome dissatisfaction and maintain their knowledge-sharing efforts

    Get PDF
Purpose Drawing on conservation of resources theory, this study aims to examine how employees’ experiences of excessive workloads may direct them away from efforts to share knowledge with other organizational members, as well as the circumstances in which this process is more or less likely. To untangle the process, the authors predict a mediating role of job dissatisfaction and moderating roles of two complementary resources that help employees cope with failure: resilience as a personal resource and organizational forgiveness as an organizational resource. Design/methodology/approach Survey data were gathered from employees of an organization that operates in the construction retail sector. The Process macro provides an empirical test of the moderated mediation dynamic that underpins the proposed conceptual framework. Findings The statistical findings affirm that an important channel through which employees’ perceptions that their work demands are unreasonable escalate into a diminished propensity to share knowledge is their lack of enthusiasm about their jobs. Their ability to recover from challenging work situations and their beliefs that the organization does not hold grudges against people who commit mistakes both mitigate this harmful effect. Practical implications For organizational practitioners, this research shows that when employees feel frustrated about extreme work pressures, the resource-draining situation may escalate into diminished knowledge sharing, which might inadvertently undermine their ability to receive valuable feedback for dealing with the challenges. From a positive perspective, individual resilience and organizational forgiveness represent resources that can protect employees against this negative spiral. Originality/value This study explicates an unexplored harmful effect of strenuous workloads on knowledge sharing, which is explained by employees’ beliefs that their organization fails to provide satisfactory job experiences. This effect also is mitigated to the extent that employees can draw from valuable personal and organizational resources.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Understanding turnover of generation Y early-career workers: The influence of values and field of study

    Get PDF
Purpose Generation Y early-career workers have the highest turnover rates ever seen. To better understand this phenomenon, this study combines the P-O values fit with the Cohort perspectives to (1) identify the work-related values of this generation, (2) explore the relation between values and turnover intentions and examine how the field of study influences this relationship and (3) verify if the turnover intentions materialized one year after the first data collection. Design/methodology/approach We interviewed 71 early-career workers and applied thematic analysis to identify the value categories. A classification decision tree tested whether the field of study influences the relation between values and turnover intentions. A post-test was conducted to determine whether the reported turnover intentions were materialized one year later. Findings Thematic analysis yielded 285 themes that were grouped into 12 values’ categories. Decision trees revealed that the combination of values that most predicted turnover was substantially different between Finance graduates (more instrumental and future-oriented values) and Innovation and Entrepreneurship graduates (more social and job-oriented values). The post-test confirmed that the number of respondents who reported an intention to quit their jobs during the interview with us and did quit one year later was statistically significant. Originality/value To our knowledge, this is the first study that uses critical incident interviews to explore the work-related values of this specific cohort and their relation to turnover. Our findings on the moderating effects of the field of study are unprecedented. We also identified three new work-value categories, and, to our knowledge, this is the first study that used decision trees to explore the relation between values and turnover.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The integration of social and health sectors in Scotland: An analysis from the prism of different public policy models

    No full text
The integration of health and social care has been a key focus in Scotland, driven by demographic changes, rising healthcare costs, and the need for more efficient service delivery. The Public Bodies (Joint Working) (Scotland) Act 2014 sought to formalise this integration by restructuring governance and service provision to improve coordination between health and social care sectors. Despite these efforts, challenges remain in fully achieving the intended outcomes of the integration. This study analysed Scotland’s integrated health and social care through the theoretical frameworks of public choice, institutionalism, and functionalism. The objective was to examine policy drivers, structural mechanisms, and governance implications, providing insights into the broader impact of integrated care reforms. A qualitative research approach was employed, synthesising data from peer-reviewed literature, government publications, and policy documents. The findings on integration were systematically examined through the lens of each public policy model, allowing for a nuanced analysis of how Scotland’s approach to integration aligns with and diverges from these frameworks. A literature search was performed on PUBMED, Google Scholar, and Scottish government portals. While integration improved coordination and service delivery in some areas, limitations in funding allocation, workforce distribution, and governance autonomy limited its overall success. Scotland’s integrated care model demonstrates potential benefits in reducing service fragmentation and improving patient-centred care; however, persistent challenges such as funding constraints, workforce shortages, and governance conflicts indicate that integration alone is not sufficient to resolve systemic healthcare inefficiencies. This study provides a perspective on Scotland’s health and social care integration, offering valuable lessons for other European countries facing similar demographic and healthcare challenges.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

“Ali Baba and the 40 Metaverses”: Ethical paradigms related to the metaverse in business contexts

    No full text
The metaverse is rapidly emerging as a key area of interest in business circles, promising an immersive experience for all users through virtual worlds. Within these computer-generated realms, users can create avatars to represent themselves and engage with other avatars and virtual environments. The title “Ali Baba and the 40 Metaverses” underscores the transformative potential of this innovation, which is often perceived as a magical technology. “Open sesame” was the magical phrase spoken to enter the cave in “Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves”, so too is the gateway into the enchanted realm of the metaverse—where the imagination reigns supreme—technologies such as virtual or augmented reality. However, the alluring prospect of the metaverse is associated with ethical issues that must be considered carefully, as they could significantly influence its acceptance and integration into societies and business settings. Using the 6-3-5 method | brainwriting and stepladder technique, this study develops a process-oriented analysis system to help companies identify and address ethical challenges related to metaverse technology. The results are based on two sessions with an expert panel, which not only shed light on the ethical paradigms associated with the metaverse but also provide actionable insights for businesses navigating this emerging landscape. To ensure the integrity and reliability of the findings, a consolidation session was conducted with an independent expert to validate the identified paradigms and pinpoint areas needing improvement.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Institutional legacies and governance models: A comparative study of broadband state aid in Europe

    No full text
This article explores how historical legacies and institutional configurations impact the governance models used in implementing State aid policies for broadband in France, Portugal, Spain, and the United Kingdom. The analysis is based on historical institutionalism, focusing on path dependence, critical junctures, and gradual institutional change. A comparative historical approach shows different governance models evolving due to administrative traditions and political factors. France and the United Kingdom have evolved toward decentralized models, which capitalize on institutional flexibility and strategic reforms. Conversely, Portugal and Spain face limitations from centralized structures and institutional inertia. This study elucidates the relationship between institutional structures and policy outcomes, providing policymakers with insights for addressing digital access disparities. These findings contribute to the public administration literature, emphasizing the role of timing, sequencing, and coordination in the design of effective governance frameworks and preparing for emerging challenges (such as 5G deployment) where State aid will be needed.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Article 26: Personal identity and the free formation of personality based on gender identity

    No full text

Job satisfaction and turnover intention: A comprehensive review of the shared determinants

    No full text
Background Human capital is a critical asset for organizations, impacting financial performance and market value. Maintaining a stable, committed workforce is challenging. Job satisfaction emerges as a pivotal factor influencing employees’ intentions to leave or turnover intention. However, both encompass diverse dimensions that can exert positive or negative effects. Objectives To explore the common factors affecting job satisfaction and turnover intention, focusing on the significant positive and negative relationships. Method A systematic review based on the PRISMA framework has been conducted. The data has been precisely identified, evaluated, and extracted from the SCOPUS database based on set benchmarks. Result The investigation revealed a variety of determinants that exhibit a significant correlation with job satisfaction and turnover intention, manifesting in both positive and negative associations. Furthermore, these elements have been linked to established motivational theories, suggesting a theoretical underpinning for the observed relationships between workplace dynamics and employee behavior. Conclusion The result intended to provide a comprehensive understanding of the factors by offering a framework for studying job satisfaction and turnover intention guiding future research in the field of knowledge.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

    No full text

    No full text
The increase in migratory flows has resulted in a growing number of immigrant students enrolled in Portuguese schools. The main objective of this study was to analyze the perspectives of native and immigrant first-grade students regarding the coexistence and inclusion of immigrant populations within the school context. The sample included 17 first-grade students, 2 teachers, and 11 parents/guardians of the aforementioned students. Data collection took place over the course of four workshops developed within the scope of the KidLe research project. Data analysis was conducted using an inductive thematic approach, which highlighted significant challenges concerning classroom inclusion. The results particularly emphasized communicative mediation strategies in the classroom and the difficulties associated with their implementation, the dynamics of support for social inclusion, as well as the experiences and challenges inherent to cultural diversity in the school context. The implications of this study reinforce the importance of inclusive pedagogical practices, continuous teacher training in intercultural competences, the valorization of strategies that promote the inclusion of migrant students, and the establishment of educational policies that affirm the school as a central space for inclusion and appreciation of diversity
