Purpose. The increasing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in news production raises important questions about audience acceptance. This research explores group differences in comfort levels toward news generated by AI and news produced with AI assistance, focusing on the effect of the main news sources. It is hypothesized that using social media as a main gateway for news may influence comfort with AI-generated news due to the users’ familiarity with algorithm personalization. Methodology. A quantitative analysis was conducted on a representative sample of 2012 Portuguese internet users. Nonparametric tests were applied for group comparisons, and a composite AI Comfort Index was developed to enable parametric testing of interaction effects between awareness of AI and main source of news. Results and Conclusions. The analysis identifies higher comfort levels when AI is presented as an assistant rather than the primary generator of the news. The results highlight significant differences among groups based on demographic and trust-related factors. Additionally, significant effects are detected in the comparison between groups with lower and higher levels of AI awareness and between social media and traditional news users. Despite not statistically significant, the interaction effect reveals that where users with higher awareness of AI who relied on social media as their main source of news shows a noticeable increase in comfort with AI-generated news. Contribution. These findings underscore the importance of considering the main source of news in discussions of AI acceptance in journalism, particularly as current developments point out that new AI powered resources, namely chatbots, could play an important role in the news distribution.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Podcasting: Impacto da plataformização num modelo de distribuição aberta de conteúdos

The 21st century is marked by the proliferation and consolidation of digital platforms, which are now the prevailing structures in contemporary communication processes. Progressively, all areas and sectors of the media ecosystem have seen their set of norms, practices and representations challenged by a new mediation paradigm in the fields of indexing, sociability and media consumption. Platformized mediation has also enabled new horizons of interaction and connection, fostering the creation of new communities and forms of interaction between producers and users. This compilation of articles explores the impact of platformization on podcasting, a format based on an open distribution model that originated at the beginning of the century in the context of the collaborative and participatory cultures of Web 2.0 and is based on anRSS structure that allows for the subscription of audio, text and video content. The conditions under which podcasting is absorbed by platformized mediation structures are observed, deepening our knowledge of how platforms impose themselves as gateways to podcasting and what effect they have on the process of discovering and accessing content. This thesis seeks to contribute to the discussion on the role of Podcasting. It argues that the way Podcasting is appropriated is distinct from the other dimensions of the platformization of communication, with the format retaining many of its original characteristics in technological, cultural, social and economic terms. It is argued that the platforms' interest in podcasting follows on from broader systems of appropriation of on-demand audio mediation since the beginning of the century, inseparable from the digitalization of networked communication processes.O século XXI é marcado pela proliferação e consolidação das plataformas digitais, hoje estruturas vigentes nos processos de comunicacionais contemporâneos.

The spiritual architecture of Maqamat: From the digitisation of Architectural Heritage sites to the enhancement of cultural memory through virtual narratives

    Get PDF
The study of Architectural Heritage in “clustered territories”, subjected to social, religious and political compression, identifies sites as an ecosystem of landmarks connected by cultural permanence and spirituality. The maqam (pl. maqamat) identifies an architectural typology of “shrine” in the Levant dedicated to prophets, sheiks and saints across Muslim, Christian and Jewish faiths. It developed as an isolated landmark, on hilltops or desert lands, as a single-chamber structure with a dome, on holy tombs or other devotional places. From the symbolic domed module, it assumed more complex configurations, linked to historical and social factors of territorial change. As “stations” along territorial routes, they linked cultural factors, intangible heritage and spiritual practices in the legacy of local communities. The research aims to an updated mapping action of preserved maqamat, focusing on the route of Abraham’s prophets and recovering memory and heritage values from the historical Palestinian tradition. Through digital survey strategies, compared to bibliographical references, the digitisation of maqamat sites and design patterns into georeferenced 3D models allows for a double-scale analysis, at territorial and architectural levels. The collection of interviews and oral stories is processed to enrich the visuality of digital 3D data, enabling a key component of storytelling to recover authentic and untold memories from the community legacy. The development of a digital narrative platform supports the communication and widespread knowledge of the heritage typology, evoking introspection and spiritual continuity, and launches a call for crowd-sourcing in the monitoring and mapping of maqamat sites with the contribution of civil society.publicad

This is the protocol for a Campbell systematic review. The objectives are as follows. The proposed overview of reviews aims to: (1) aggregate and systematize findings from multiple overviews of reviews, and offer a broader understanding of the factors, both facilitators and barriers related to PrEP awareness, uptake, and adherence among MSM; and (2) understand if there are gaps in the literature on potential facilitators and barriers that need greater analysis. Hence, the purpose of this overview of reviews aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 3 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly with SDG 3.3, that is, end the epidemics of AIDS and other communicable diseases.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Exploring the intersection of big data and open innovation: Synergies and challenges in emerging contexts

    Get PDF
This study explores the symbiotic relationship between Big Data and Open Innovation. They work together to accelerate innovation and generate value for organizations. Different sectors and organizations go through decision-making processes that range from operational and routine aspects to managerial and strategic decisions, such as the implementation of a new product or the purchase of a new production unit. All these decisions require data and information that can mitigate risks and support choices. This study draws insights from real-world case studies, emphasizing the transformative potential of Big Data for open innovation. It analyzes evidence of the use of Big Data in Open Innovation practices in a group of Peruvian software companies. The results show the gap in the use of Big Data to support collaborative practices in the sample. In fact, often, those companies do not see a direct relationship between Big Data experience and the adoption of Open Innovation practices. The findings underscore the need for integrated approaches and suggest that bridging the gap between Big Data and Open Innovation offers a promising avenue for thriving in an information-rich environment.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Escape routes in urban-mined territories: Narratives from digital media in Congonhas/ Minas Gerais (Brazil)

    Get PDF
This policy brief debates the relationship between information made public in digital media about territorial conflicts and their impact on urban-mined territories, structured by the theoretical-conceptual tripod territory-mining-society. Congonhas, Minas Gerais, Brazil, is part of the urban-mined territories that correspond to the periphery of global centralities. In terms of global economic-capitalist power, it is in these mining towns that the territorial bases of their financial gains are located. The territory of Congonhas, in this research, is understood as a place of persistent coloniality in which mining subordinates, subsidizes and maintains procedures that expropriate wealth and natural reserves. What is being questioned and analyzed here is: Who, how, what and where is information about urban-mined territorial conflicts in the municipality of Congonhas disseminated and publicized? What is proposed are some recommendations for public policies aimed at strengthening collective territorial resistance, in digital media and by organized social movements, towards escape routes in territorial and political autonomy. It is from social movements that counter-narratives and disputes emerge in public policies aimed at human and natural rights

Father’s engagement in direct care is associated with children’s social competence for preschool boys but not girls in Peru

    Get PDF
Evidence shows that fathers have an important role in child development, but few studies explore this influence in the Latin American context. This study aimed to contribute to bridge this gap by analyzing in a Peruvian urban, mainly middle socioeconomic sample, the associations between different dimensions of father engagement (i.e., interaction in direct care, teaching/discipline, and play activities) and children’s social adjustment (i.e., social competence, anxiety-withdrawal and anger-aggression) during the preschool years, while controlling for child’s age and parents’ education, and testing the interaction effects between father’s engagement and child’s gender. Two hundred three 2-parent families with preschool children (M = 52.82, SD = 10.06; 57.63% were girls) participated in the study. Multiple ordinary least squares regression models were conducted. Only for social competence, an interaction between father’s engagement in direct care and child’s gender (boys) was found. These results contribute to highlight the importance of fathers in domains traditionally associated with mothers in a Latin American context.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

When is gender on party agendas? Manifestos and (de-)democratisation in Greece, Portugal, and Spain

    Get PDF
When do political parties give attention to gender-related political interests, and what determines their positions? We argue that progress in gender equality commitments is an essential component of democratisation, and backsliding in these indicates democratic decay. Using original data coded from party manifestos in Greece, Portugal, and Spain over recent decades, we investigate the role of party ideology and critical junctures in the political context. We find that left wing parties give more attention to gender-related interests than other parties. Far-right parties also give significant attention to some interests and stand out for traditional positions. Further, the economic recession significantly decreased attention to gender-related interests. Our results suggest that economic crises and associated far-right party strength fuel gender backsliding and de-democratisation.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Being healthy and achieving life harmony: The role of hybrid work and the mediating effect of work–family[with pets] conflict

    Get PDF
Purpose The recent workplace dynamics era allowed many organizations to adopt the hybrid working model. However, despite the growing relevance of telework for diverse outcomes, few studies have explored hybrid work. Therefore, this research was based on the role theory and the job demands-resources model to develop a conceptual model arguing that hybrid work may potentially influence employees’ life harmony and mental health through decreases in work–family conflict. Moreover, answering the call for more studies on the role of families with pets regarding work-life boundaries, it is also proposed that hybrid work may potentially influence employees’ harmony and mental health through decreases in work–[pet]family conflict. Design/methodology/approach To achieve this objective, two studies were conducted. The first was a two-wave study carried out in 2023, involving 376 hybrid workers who completed two online surveys. The second study, also two-wave, was conducted in 2024 and included 479 working adults who participated in the research through online data collection. Findings The findings of the first study showed that individuals working in a hybrid model tended to experience less work–family conflict, consequently increasing their harmony and mental health. The second study also evidenced that those working in a hybrid modality had higher levels of harmony in life and mental health due to decreases in their work–[pet]family conflict. Originality/value The results highlight the importance of this working modality for employees’ mental health and well-being. Plus, it also opens future venues for research regarding work–[pet]family conflict, as it appears to be a relevant construct for modern families and younger generations of working adults.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
