Faces of the tropics: Facial recognition, identity and refusal in Mexico

    Get PDF
This paper investigates ‘AI refusal’ by analysing how colonial and racialised logics inform the surveillance and representation of Mexicans through facial recognition technologies. Blending conventional academic analysis with a fictional vignette and a visual triptych, the paper offers a creative-critical approach to resistance. The vignette evokes the emotional and embodied impacts of surveillance, while the triptych employs visual metaphors to challenge reductive representations and affirm selfhood across the lifespan. Together, these methods provide cultural geographers with tools to examine the affective, symbolic and material dimensions of surveillance, resistance and collective memory.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Generation Z is currently entering the workforce, representing approximately one-quarter of the global workforce by 2025. This study explores the professional preferences of Generation Z in Portugal, an area that remains underexplored, providing practical insights for employers and managers. A quantitative approach was utilized with a non-probabilistic convenience sample of 146 young Portuguese individuals from Generation Z, collected through an online questionnaire between May and July 2023. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software, including descriptive analysis, exploratory factor analysis, and One-Way ANOVA tests. The results revealed a significant appreciation for social values, particularly interpersonal relationships and cooperation in the workplace. Contrary to global trends, economic values were ranked lower than social values. Aspects such as work-life balance, job stability, and a positive work environment emerged as crucial factors. Statistical analysis did not reveal significant differences in professional preferences across different fields of study. This study underscores the importance of considering both material and social-emotional aspects to attract and retain Generation Z members in Portugal

    Get PDF
The media assumes a fundamental role in shaping how society perceives people with disabilities and significantly contributes to the implementing of their rights. The media representation of disability is an underexplored field within communication sciences, with even fewer studies addressing portuguese journalism. The research question, “How are disability and people with disabilities represented in the Portuguese press?” sought to identify and analyze representations of disability in major Portuguese print newspapers during the decade from 2008 to 2018—a period marked by the ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). Additionally, in light of the coronavirus pandemic, the study expanded it’s scope to include the first portuguese lockdown (March, April, and May 2020) to examine the attention given to people with disabilities during the pandemic. A mixedmethods approach was adopted, combining a categorical content analysis during the quantitative phase with a thematic analysis applied to a selected portion of the corpus. The findings revealed that, although the representation of disability in the portuguese press has significantly progressed towards a rightsbased approach in line with the CRPD, disability remains underrepresented and does not receive prominent coverage in print media. Traditional models of media representation of disability (medical, pathological, social, and supercrip) persist, and portrayals are largely grounded in stereotypes linked to tragedy, dependency, incompetence, and overcoming disability

In this study, the co-participative development of a Local Strategic Plan for Dementia is presented and analysed. Fifteen institutions from a territory in central Portugal participated in this dynamic, each represented by a reference professional and 2 senior technicians from the City Council (n=17). Participants with previous experience in providing care to elderly people and caring for people with dementia were recruited. The co-participative ideation dynamics took place in a single 8-hour session, which was divided into 4 distinct phases: (i) icebreaker presentation, (ii) co-design of objectives, (iii) co-design of strategic axes, (iv) co-design of intervention. A content analysis of the exercises and a summary were carried out according to the following structure: objectives for the strategic plan, strategic axes and actions to be implemented. Throughout the ideation exercises, more significant keywords were defined, reflecting the most relevant dimensions in assistance and care for people with dementia: 10 dimensions for processes, 7 for social health, and 7 for policies. Five axes were defined: Community Literacy, Combating Isolation, Aging in Place, Intergenerational, and Dementia Friendly Service, which were supported by 13 objectives, 15 actions and 17 goals and 20 strategic partners. The design of a co-participative proposal for a Local Strategic Plan for Dementia proved to be an innovative and effective methodology, and it should, in the future, involve other community stakeholders and develop lines of action for the coordination and monitoring of the strategy

Creating engaging narratives from visual data is crucial for automated digital media consumption, assistive technologies, and interactive entertainment. This survey covers methodologies used in the generation of these narratives, focusing on their principles, strengths, and limitations. The survey also covers tasks related to automatic story generation, such as image and video captioning, and Visual Question Answering. These tasks share common challenges with Visual Story Generation (VSG) and have served as inspiration for the techniques used in the field. We analyze the main datasets and evaluation metrics, providing a critical perspective on their limitations.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Green dynamic capabilities in tourism: An integrative conceptual model for sustainable competitive advantage

    Get PDF
Purpose: This study aims to contribute to the development of scientific knowledge in Green Dynamic Capabilities (GDC) and Environmental Sustainability, a recent and little explored topic in the literature. The research was carried out to propose an integrative conceptual model of GDC, which can be used by organizations as a guideline in the implementation of these capabilities. Methodology/Design/Approach: The research was carried out through a content analysis of the Sustainability Reports of all the European companies reported in the Eikon database. The choice of categories was based on Teece's (2007) approach, which divides Dynamic Capabilities into three dimensions: sensing, seizing, and transforming. Findings: The research concluded that organizations are concerned with developing and implementing GDC in their activities and are willing to invest time and resources to reap the benefits of GDC. The results obtained from the research allowed the development of an integrative conceptual model of GDC. Originality: This study is one of the first to explore the concept of Green Dynamic Capabilities and its application in organizations. The development of an integrative conceptual model of GDC is a valuable contribution to the literature, as it provides a framework for understanding and implementing these capabilities.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

A global history of the 1919 total solar eclipse

    Get PDF
In this paper, we are looking at the British expeditions that observed the 1919 total solar eclipse in Sobral (Brazil) and Príncipe island as scientific practice embedded in their geographical, social, and world-political context. This fresh look makes steps towards a “global history” of this eclipse, and reports on contextual elements of the expeditions that have been hitherto “eclipsed” in the narratives that concentrated on the exchange of scientific arguments in a “world of ideas.” What it may mean to think of the globality of the 1919 eclipse is presented followed by an analysis of four main dimensions of this globality that include actors in context, observing totality, the eclipse lineage, and eclipse on paper.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Self-regulation in moderate-to-late preterm children: A scoping review

    No full text
Compared with the more physically fragile extremely/very preterm children (E/VPT), moderate-to-late preterm (MLPT) children—the large majority of preterm births—are underrepresented in research. This gap persists despite evidence that MLPT children exhibit more difficulties than full-term peers in certain domains. This scoping review surveys the literature on psychological forms of self-regulation in MLPT children, organized around three levels: emotional, behavioral, and cognitive regulation. We sought studies on MLPT children, aged 3 months to 3 years, including: (1) comparisons of self-regulation with other gestational groups; and (2) environmental and individual factors associated with self-regulation specifically in MLPT children. A systematic search across five electronic databases, supplemented by a manual search, identified 24 relevant articles. Our review found inconsistencies regarding self-regulation in MLPT children compared to other gestational groups. Emotion regulation in MLPT children appears comparable to E/VPT children, whereas behavioral regulation aligns more with full-term peers. Results for cognitive regulation are mixed. Environmental factors (e.g., maternal depressive symptoms) and individual factors (e.g., sex) associated with self-regulation were identified. The review underscores variability in self-regulation development among MLPT children and highlights the limited research focused on this population. More research, particularly longitudinal studies with representative samples, is urgently needed.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Identifying optimal microwave frequencies to detect floating macroplastic litter using machine learning

    Get PDF
Microwaves (MWs) have emerged as a promising sensing technology to complement optical methods for monitoring floating plastic litter. This study uses machine learning (ML) to identify optimal MW frequencies for detecting floating macroplastics (>5 cm) across S, C, and X-bands. Data were obtained from dedicated wideband backscattering radio measurements conducted in a controlled indoor scenario that mimics deep-sea conditions. The paper presents new strategies to directly analyze the frequency domain signals using ML algorithms, instead of generating an image from those signals and analyzing the image. We propose two ML workflows, one unsupervised, to characterize the difference in feature importance across the measured MW spectrum, and the other supervised, based on multilayer perceptron, to study the detection accuracy in unseen data. For the tested conditions, the backscatter response of the plastic litter is optimal at X-band frequencies, achieving accuracies up to 90% and 80% for lower and higher water wave heights, respectively. Multiclass classification is also investigated to distinguish between different types of plastic targets. ML results are interpreted in terms of the physical phenomena obtained through numerical analysis, and quantified through an energy-based metric.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
