Navigating the path to sustainable development in BRICS countries
This study is a comprehensive analysis of the economic, environmental and social efficiencies of the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) from 2010 to 2023, using the data envelopment analysis (DEA) method. In an innovative extension, the study estimates a second-stage regression to explore the impact of institutional support, specifically financial disbursements from the New Development Bank (NDB), on national sustainable development performance. Key findings reveal that Russia maintains the highest economic efficiency, averaging 94%, despite geopolitical tensions and economic pressures. Brazil, while initially leading in earlier years, shows a fall to 83%, reflecting challenges in maintaining high efficiency. India and China exhibit moderate economic efficiency, by structural and environmental challenges. South Africa, despite low inputs and outputs, achieves notable efficiency, particularly in environmental and social dimensions, with scores of 98% and 95.57% respectively. The findings suggest that bloc-level cooperation, through mechanisms like the NDB, can contribute positively to national efficiency outcomes. This paper contributes to the literature by integrating institutional development finance into a DEA framework and offering a comparative perspective on BRICS countries' sustainable growth trajectories within the Global South.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Portfolio risk management through value-at-risk: An empirical study of stocks and bonds
Value-at-Risk (VaR) can be defined as the maximum potential loss of a portfolio over a specific period at a given confidence level, and it is considered, nowadays, as the industry standard risk measurement metric. This project aims to measure and manage the VaR of a diversified portfolio including equities and bonds, ensuring the VaR does not exceed a prespecified target value. This work considers four VaR models, RiskMetrics (RM), Skewed Generalized Student-t (SGSt), Historical VaR, and Quantile Regression (QR) VaR to determine the most suitable approach for managing risk. The performance of each VaR model is assessed through Backtesting to understand which model predicts potential losses better. The model with the best Backtesting performance is then used to calculate the portfolio's VaR daily over one year and a hedging strategy is applied to maintain the VaR within the defined target. This project aims to underscore the efficiency of the hedging strategies, the importance of Backtesting to select the best VaR model, and the importance of continually improving risk management tools to better capture extreme market events.O Value-at-Risk (VaR) pode ser definido como a perda potencial máxima de uma carteira durante um período específico, com um determinado nível de confiança, e é considerado, atualmente, como a métrica de medição de risco padrão do sector.
This dissertation analyses union demobilisation in the Portuguese private banking sector in light of the structural, organisational and cultural transformations that have taken place over the last decade. In a context of increasing digitalisation, corporate restructuring and regulatory reconfiguration of work, unions face new challenges in mobilising workers in the collective defence of labour rights. The study starts from the hypothesis that the individualisation of labour relations – expressed through practices such as management by objectives, the precariousness and individualisation of employment relationships and frameworks, individualised incentives and a high-performance culture – contributes significantly to the weakening of solidarity and collective action.
Based on a mixed methodological approach, data were collected through a questionnaire survey of 351 bank workers and semi-structured interviews with 9 trade union leaders from different organisations representing the sector. The triangulation of data made it possible to identify several dynamics that condition workers' participation in union actions, such as fear of reprisals, distrust in the effectiveness of union representation, and the internalisation of individualistic values.
Empirical analysis shows that union demobilisation in the banking sector is not only the result of external constraints, such as legislative changes or the economic situation, but also of processes internal to organisations and the subjectivities of workers. The research thus contributes to understanding the logic of collective fragmentation in the contemporary world of work and offers clues for the strategic renewal of union practices, with a view to revaluing collective action in a sector historically marked by a strong tradition of labour organisation
Alleviating health impairment impact of job demands: Leader-member exchange as a moderator in job-demands resources model: Evidence from Chinese public hospitals
In the context of Chinese public hospitals, doctors generally have to face high job demands in medical practice. Based on the Job Demands-Resources Model and the Conservation of Resources Theory, this study explored the relationship between job demands and burnout of doctors in Chinese public hospitals through the doctor-patient relationship and work engagement, as well as the moderation effect of leader-member exchange therein.
Using a cross-sectional design, this research conducted a survey of 708 doctors from 18 public hospitals of different levels and categories in 14 regions of Jiangsu Province, China. For data analysis, we used Process Macro to test the research hypothesis model.
The results showed that: (1) Job demands had an energy depletion effect on doctors; they were negatively associated with the doctor-patient relationship and work engagement but positively related to burnout; moreover, they were positively associated with burnout through the doctor-patient relationship and work engagement sequentially. (2) As a challenge job demand, the doctor-patient relationship was positively associated with work engagement but negatively related to burnout; it also mediated the relationship between job demands and work engagement, as well as the relationship between job demands and burnout. (3) Leader-member exchange mitigated the detrimental impacts of job demands on the doctor-patient relationship and produced a moderated mediation effect in the path between job demands and burnout.
Based on these findings, implications and strategies were discussed for health policy-makers, public hospital managers, and doctors in public hospitals.
This study explores ethno-racial representation - specifically of black individuals, in advertising in Portugal. It reflects on how advertising, beyond promoting the consumption of products and services, also plays a role in legitimizing certain ideals and disseminating narratives that shape collective perceptions of identity, belonging, and ethno-racial difference. To ground this reflection, the study draws on a range of theoretical frameworks, from Marxist thought to contemporary syntheses such as Pierre Bourdieu’s theories and Stuart Hall’s cultural studies. These perspectives offer critical insights into power relations, combining materialist approaches with analyses of symbolic domination.
The research adopts a qualitative methodology, based on a focus group with eight Black professionals from various sectors of social communication. To complement and enrich the data analysis, an interview was conducted with the founder of a collective of black professionals working to combat racial inequalities in media and the arts. Additionally, although not in a systematic way, the study sought to compile examples of how black individuals have been represented in different advertising campaigns in Portugal. The difficulty in accessing empirical material, along with the scarcity of research on this topic in the Portuguese context, gives this investigation an exploratory character.
Overall, the study highlights the limited presence of Black professionals in advertising and explores the various ways in which erasure, stereotypes, segregation, and ethno-racial instrumentalization continue to be reproduced
Women, crime, punishment: Contributions to the study of female security
“Work without future”: Neoliberal precarity, horizons of worthy living and generational dispossession in the Portuguese call center sector
Since the mid-2000s, call center employment has gradually gained prominence in the public sphere in Portugal. While little was known about what the work actually entailed or how it was performed, there seemed to be little doubt regarding who was employed by these new factories of communication characteristic of late capitalist societies (Fernie and Metcalf 1998; Buscatto 2002). The media began characterizing the call center workforce as the “500-euro generation” (“geração 500 euros”)—a publicly sanctioned label used to designate highly qualified young adults engaged in low-paid, precarious, unprotected and socially marginalized forms of service work. Snapshots of call center work began emerging regularly in the media, with the call center environment frequently portrayed as endless rows of tiny cubicles in which workers endured the drudgery of repetitive and monotonous telephone conversations with angry and abusive clients, all while subject to invasive technological surveillance, discipline, and control. In 2011, the “500/euro generation” was renamed the “troubled generation” (geração á rasca), an expression coined during a massive collective mobilization called by a group of young activists protesting the intensification of neoliberal labor precarity resulting from austerity measures. In their manifesto, activists called for participation from a coalition of the precarious population: the unemployed, “500-Eurists” and other underpaid workers, temporary workers, fraudulently self-employed workers, trainees, scholarship holders, and working students, among others. These groups aired collective grievances regarding their subjection to precarity, while identifying the irony in their position as “the highest qualified generation in the history of our country.” Even today, for ordinary people, academics, politicians, and social activists, call center work remains a striking symbol of labor precarity, a condition particularly associated with the generational disenchantment in the neoliberal idea that “each generation does better than its predecessor” (Comaroff and Comaroff 2001, 17)....info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
Transforming higher education through active engagement and creative teaching: Reflections and practices
This chapter explores a transformative approach to higher education that
shifts from traditional, lecture‑based instruction to active, student‑centered
learning grounded in creativity, empathy, and experiential engagement.
Drawing on the context of the Bologna Process and inspired by Paulo Freire’s
critical pedagogy, the authors reflect on their experience teaching Design
Thinking and Public Presentations with Acting Techniques at Iscte. Through
these courses, students engage in real‑world problem‑solving, improvisation,
prototyping, and self‑expression – developing essential transversal skills such
as communication, teamwork, empathy, and critical thinking. The chapter
emphasizes the role of the educator as a coach and facilitator who creates
emotionally intelligent learning environments where students are encoura‑
ged to take risks, collaborate, and co‑construct knowledge. Feedback is posi‑
tioned as a strategic, developmental tool that fosters growth, reflection, and
motivation. Student feedback highlights increased confidence, autonomy,
and personal transformation, while also pointing to areas for improvement,
such as activity pacing and integration of real‑world challenges. The authors
argue that for higher education to remain relevant in an unpredictable world,
institutions must prioritize curricular flexibility, active methodologies, and a
culture of innovation that supports both students and educators. Ultimately,
the chapter calls for a redefinition of teaching as a relational, reflective, and
human‑centered practice that empowers learners to thrive personally and

The mental health of children and adolescents represents a significant challenge for current healthcare systems and is recognised as a global priority by the World Health Organization. This study addresses the challenges and opportunities in promoting mental health during childhood and adolescence, with a focus on the role of multidisciplinary teams and the implementation of the recovery approach in the hospital setting.
The main objective of the study was to understand how the dynamics, interaction, and degree of interdisciplinarity between the professionals in child and adolescent mental health teams influence the application of the recovery approach. To achieve this, a qualitative methodology was adopted, based on a case study and action research.
Data collection included semi-structured interviews with professionals from the outpatient child and adolescent mental health teams at the Dona Estefânia Hospital, children under their care, and their families. This was complemented by participant observation and documentary analysis.
The results highlight the fundamental role of social workers in promoting a multidisciplinary culture and emphasise the need to strengthen communication between professionals and to effectively include children and their families in decision-making processes. The recovery approach was shown to be an effective strategy for empowering children and promoting their well-being, although its implementation faces structural and organisational challenges.
The thesis concludes with reflections on the need to strengthen more inclusive and humanised mental health policies and practices, presenting proposals to improve the performance of multidisciplinary teams and optimise interventions based on the recovery approach. This research contributes to advancing knowledge in the field of child and adolescent mental health and to strengthening the role of social work in this context
