Balanced life: The impact of hybrid work on employee well-being through the lens of work–family conflict
Purpose
Hybrid work is a working model that combines remote or home-based work with in-person work, typically from a traditional location such as an office. Although teleworking has been a model frequently used since the 1990s, it only became more common with the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and the subsequent mandatory lockdowns. Thus, the post-pandemic era allowed many organizations to adopt a work regime that combines remote and in-person work, namely the hybrid model. In Portugal, this working model is relatively recent and lacks study. Therefore, this study was based on the e-work life model and aimed to test the mediating role of work–family conflict in the relationship between hybrid work and employees’ harmony and mental health.
Design/methodology/approach
For this purpose, a two-wave survey was conducted with 376 hybrid workers.
Findings
The results showed that individuals working in a hybrid model tended to experience less work–family conflict, consequently increasing their harmony and mental health.
Originality/value
The results demonstrate the importance of organizations adopting this working model and using it as a strategy to improve workers’ mental health and well-being.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
Financialisation, indebted workers and labour discipline: Empirical evidence on reduced strike activity in the European Union countries
Workers are being denoted by higher resignation and conformism and lesser claimant behaviour due to their lesser engagement in strikes, which indeliberately agrees with the proliferation of neoliberal policies and a corresponding deregulation and flexibilisation of labour relations that has led to a strong deterioration of labour conditions, a loss of labour rights and an increase in labour exploitation all over the world in the last five decades. Our argument to explain this puzzling paradox of worsening labour conditions yet less strike activity emphasises that as a result of their more financially fragile position, indebted workers evidence a more self-disciplined attitude and risk-averse behaviour in their workplaces in order to retain their jobs (and income) and honour their financial obligations, which then constrains their claims for higher wages and better labour conditions through engagement in strikes. This study assesses the influence of worker indebtedness on strike activity by performing a panel data econometric analysis from 1995 to 2022 that is focused on the European Union countries. Our results support our argument by confirming that worker indebtedness negatively impacts strike volume, strike participation and strike duration in the European Union countries. Our results also show that this negative impact is stronger in the European Union countries with the highest levels of worker indebtedness. In addition, our results corroborate that the growth in worker indebtedness is even one of the main drivers behind the decline of strike activity in the European Union countries since the mid-1990s.publicad

Based on the research question "What factors influenced the implementation of the Security Sector Reforms in Guinea-Bissau?", the thesis seeks to analyse civil-military relations, the functioning of the state and public administration and the difficulties of the international community in the context of SSR in Guinea-Bissau.
The work seeks to address the lack of transparency surrounding the reasons for the successive failures of the Security System Reform in Guinea-Bissau and to point out ways of finding a solution, through empirical research using interviews with direct witnesses to some of the most important events related to the subject under study.
The conclusion is that Guinea-Bissau has been facing a deep division in society, economic and social problems aggravated by political instability and the lack of effective reforms in the Defence and Security Sector, and that attempts to reform this sector have failed due to conflicts of interest, internal resistance, drug trafficking, disorganization and the military's interference in politics. A lack of understanding of the country's particularities and constant political instability have also contributed to the failure of reforms. The empirical work, based on interviews with senior Guinean military, political, academic and social figures and confirming the Literature Review, points to the need for a Global State Reform to integrate the Defense and Security Sector into the Public Administration, promoting more effective control and putting an end to impunity, corruption and nepotism
Young people’s conceptions of political agency in relation to climate change
This article explores how young people conceptualise political agency in the context of climate change. Drawing on a Reflexive Thematic Analysis of 22 focus groups with 154 young people living in Portugal, aged 13 to 35, we identified four conceptions of political agency: transformational collective agency, proto-political collective action, individualised action and disempowered action. Our findings indicate that young people who identify as climate activists view oppositional and disruptive actions as the pathway for achieving transformational social change. In contrast, non-activists tend to favour proto-political collective action or individual approaches as means of gaining political influence. For some young people, disempowered action reflects a limited sense of political agency, which constrains their perceived role in addressing climate change. Overall, we suggest that young people’s political agency regarding climate change is shaped by both motivating and inhibiting factors, a desire for political influence and perceived power to bring about transformative change.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Life satisfaction and future expectations among young NEETs: A mixed method approach
This study examines life satisfaction and future expectations among young NEETs (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) in Italy using a mixed-method approach. Based on a sample of 930 individuals aged 25-29, the research explores both the hedonic and eudaimonic dimensions of well-being. Study 1 employs a binary logit model to analyze the impact of socio-demographic factors, self-efficacy, and trauma-related symptoms (TSC) on life satisfaction. Findings indicate higher life satisfaction among women, caregivers, individuals with higher education, and those from southern regions. Additionally, self-efficacy positively influences well-being, whereas trauma-related symptoms have a negative effect. Study 2 utilizes text mining techniques to examine NEETs’ aspirations, revealing a predominant focus on employment, stability, and family. Gender and regional disparities underscore the need for targeted policy interventions to address psychological and socio-economic barriers. This research highlights the importance of integrated strategies to enhance NEETs’ life satisfaction and future outlook.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

A lack of clarity, a lack of OCB: The detrimental effects of role ambiguity, through procedural injustice, and the mitigating roles of relational resources
If employees lack information about their job responsibilities, do they halt their voluntary work efforts, and if so, why and when? To answer these questions, this study attempts to unpack the relationship between employees’ role ambiguity and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) and proposes both a mediating role of procedural injustice and a moderating role of relational resources (i.e. social interaction and goodwill trust). Survey data collected from employees who work for a services organization in Mozambique indicate that a critical reason that unclear role descriptions diminish extra-role work activities is that employees criticize their organization for maintaining unfair decision-making processes. The informality and trustworthiness of their peer relationships mitigate this detrimental effect. For employees who feel stressed by insufficient information about job responsibilities, this study indicates a risk that their organizational standing might become compromised because they respond by refraining from work-related voluntarism. Organizations need to encourage high-quality interpersonal exchanges to help reduce this risk.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
