This dissertation, developed within the scope of the Master's in Sociology at ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon, aims to understand female emancipation and the models of family and social organization in Guinea-Bissau.
The objective is to analyze the social representations of Guinean men and women and how these influence the dynamics of roles within the family, as well as gender-related practices. The research adopted a qualitative methodological approach, using semi-structured interviews with seven couples, totaling 14 participants.
The interviews aim to explore the positions of men and women regarding gender practices, the sexual division of labor resulting from female emancipation, and how both are represented in public and private spaces. Furthermore, the study promotes a discussion on social representations, the sexual division of labor, and the articulation between public and private spaces, based on the narratives of the interviewees.
In this way, the research seeks to contribute to the deepening of sociological knowledge about gender practices in Guinea-Bissau and to offer insights for the development of more equitable and effective public policies
comunidades.
bem-estar.
A presente dissertação analisa o programa Marcar o Lugar – Encontros no Museu, do
combinando entrevistas a diferentes intervenientes (PcD, cuidadores, profissionais do
O programa demonstra impactos positivos no bem-estar social e
emocional, na promoção do envelhecimento ativo e no fortalecimento do vínculo PcD-
cuidador.
significativas. The 21st-century museum must establish itself as a space for encounter and full
participation, fostering accessibility, inclusion, and the social development of
communities. In Portugal, demographic ageing and the growing prevalence of dementia
reinforce the need for cultural initiatives that promote quality of life and combat the
isolation of people with dementia (PwD) and their caregivers. By acknowledging their
social role and aligning with cultural policies, museums can play an essential part in
promoting mental health and well-being.
This dissertation analyses the programme Marcar o Lugar – Encontros no Museu
(“Marking the Place – Meetings at the Museum”), implemented by the Museum of
Lisbon, as a case study that seeks to understand how accessibility strategies contribute to
inclusion and the museum experience of PwD and caregivers. The research adopts a
qualitative approach, combining semi-structured interviews with different stakeholders
(PwD, caregivers, museum professionals, and representatives from Alzheimer Portugal)
and direct observation of the sessions.
Findings reveal that, although physical and informational accessibility are crucial,
attitudinal accessibility emerges as the key factor for genuine inclusion. The programme
demonstrates significant positive effects on participants’ social and emotional well-being,
the promotion of active ageing, and the strengthening of the PwD–caregiver relationship.
However, challenges remain, particularly concerning disease progression and the need to
extend this inclusive approach to the entire museum institution.
The study confirms the contribution of museums to health and well-being,
highlighting the central role of the human factor in developing inclusive and socially
meaningful cultural practices
From transfer to co-creation: Charting the prospects for university-industry cooperation
This study documents the evolution of university-industry cooperation (UIC) intermediaries and identifies implications for management and policy. By applying topic modelling to around 150 research papers on the dynamics of UIC intermediaries, it finds a transition from a linear perspective of university-industry technology transfer to more systemic relationships based on co-creation. This work also sheds light on themes previously hidden in the literature that have implications for practice and policy The findings highlight the leadership role of intermediaries, emphasising proactive stakeholder engagement as central to effective university-industry cooperation. It also underlines the importance of intermediaries in actively connecting university and industry and anticipating trends.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Teachers' support for gender equality in education: The role of religiosity, school religious and gender norms, and sexism
The present study examines the psychological and contextual factors that influence teachers’ support for gender equality in education. It focuses on the roles of individual religiosity, school religious norms, reflecting the institutional religious climate, and school gender norms, which shape how gender expectations and biases are either reinforced or challenged within educational settings. Ambivalent sexism, encompassing both benevolent and hostile components, was investigated as a mediating mechanism. A sample of 259 teachers from public and private schools in Italy participated in the study. Employing a quantitative, correlational design, data were collected through self-report questionnaires and analysed using multiple mediation and serial mediation models. Results indicated that both benevolent and hostile sexism partially mediated the negative relationship between individual religiosity and support for gender equality. At the institutional level, perceived school religious and gender inequality norms also predicted reduced support, with their effects fully mediated by ambivalent sexism, although school religious norms were linked primarily to benevolent sexism. Exploratory models further indicated that school religious norms indirectly influenced support for gender equality via both school gender norms and individual religiosity. These findings offer an integrated framework for understanding how structural and ideological forces jointly operate to hinder gender equality initiatives in educational contexts.O presente estudo examina os factores psicológicos e contextuais que influenciam o apoio dos professores à igualdade de género na educação.
Crime as culture revisited: Being young, poor and delinquent in Lisbon, Portugal
In Portugal, a large number of young residents living on the urban periphery have adopted a lifestyle in constant conflict with the law. This article discusses their stories and their willingness to endure violent encounters with the police and draconian prison sentences, drawing on a cultural criminological framework of the phenomenology of delinquency. It is argued that the youths’ behaviour is driven less by monetary considerations or the thrill of transgression than by a deep yearning to make amends for past humiliations and to compensate for their mistreatment at the hands of state actors. Seeking to gain respect and avoid the role of perpetual victims, their marginal social beingness is deliberately forlorn, as they realize that the proceeds of crime will never buy them the true citizenship to which they aspire. Clinging to a culture of deviance that only exacerbates their original state of marginality, they submit to the life of social outlaws, provoking increasingly harsh responses from law enforcement and the criminal justice system.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

What works for whom in which circumstances in successful HRM implementation? A realist synthesis
High-quality HR practices do not always yield positive outcomes due to implementation shortcomings, which has led to the shift in focus from the content of HR practices to their process of implementation. Despite this shift, there remains a lack of systematic understanding of how and why implementation of HR practices succeeds or fails. To address this gap, a comprehensive review of effective implementation mechanisms, influencing contextual factors, and resulting outcomes is needed. Consequently, this study adopts a realist synthesis approach following the RAMESES publication standards to identify and synthesise existing evidence from empirical studies of HRM implementation. Reviewing 62 articles, we extracted and proposed four realist programme theories based on the process mechanisms attributed to actors of line managers, employees, senior managers, and HR departments. These realist programme theories explain how the process mechanisms bring about different outcomes in different contexts, hence, they enhance the understanding of ‘what works for whom in which circumstances?’ regarding HRM implementation.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The consumer genome: Willingness to share and accept genetic data in marketing
Genetic marketing presents novel challenges for marketing, namely how its implementation impacts consumers’ attitudes. The current study is grounded on the privacy calculus and theory of planned behavior theories to understand how consumers are willing to accept the use of genetic data for marketing purposes. A total of 309 consumers were surveyed about their perceptions of using genetic data. The study shows that creating benefits for the disclosure of information, establishing a positive reputation for the organization, and building systems that empower consumers in terms of control over their genetic data will help consumers accept genetic marketing practices.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Children's right to participation in residential care: A staff-based study in Portugal
Background
Youth in residential care (RC) reveal high-risk trajectories, which require upholding their rights and providing them with opportunities to participate.
Objective
We aimed to identify staff profiles focused on their perceptions of participation and the association with sociodemographic variables.
Participants and setting
This study included quantitative analysis of qualitative data collected from 87 professionals in the RC (Mage = 38.92, SD = 9.36).
Methods
A variable-centered approach was applied to identify the associations between the categories and configurations of profiles, followed by a person-centered approach to group professionals who shared similar conceptual profiles.
Results
Three profiles were identified. The Full Participation profile (14.9 %) involves those who conceive participation as ensuring that youth's views must be acted upon, and youth should participate in their education, play activities and RC issues to promote their empowerment. This cluster did not include participants from settings only for females, showing a greater proportion of males-only settings than the others. The Participation in the Case Plan profile described most professionals (56.3 %), reporting that youth should participate in child protection cases and family contacts to foster their well-being and quality of RC. This cluster showed a greater proportion of female-only settings than did the others. The Blurred Participation profile (28.7 %) represented a non-specific vision of how participation might work and showed a greater proportion of mixed settings than others.
Conclusions
Most professionals focused on youth participation in case plans more than on their capacity to participate in all decisions and be empowered. Skilled professionals are required to encourage participation in RC.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
