Strategic change in resolving the efficiency-equity dilemma: A novel approach to portfolio selection
This paper introduces an innovative portfolio selection methodology that incorporates extended goal programming (EGP) to address the efficiency-equity tradeoff in international portfolio management. Unlike traditional methods, EGP integrates multiple-objective optimization, allowing for a balanced consideration of risk, return, and correlation simultaneously. This study not only advances the theoretical framework of portfolio management by extending the principles of Modern Portfolio Theory (MPT) but also provides empirical evidence of EGP's robustness across various market conditions, including financial crises. Utilizing data from five major global stock markets, which collectively represent over 70% of global market value, the results demonstrate that EGP-constructed portfolios outperform both global and market-specific benchmarks. The research contributes to the literature by offering a flexible, adaptable tool for decision-makers, enabling them to tailor portfolio strategies to diverse investor goals and volatile market environments. This study's findings have significant implications for both academics and practitioners, paving the way for more resilient and optimized portfolio management practices.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Exploring the role of sustainability reporting strategies in promoting sustainable development in social economy entities: The circular economy as a mediator
This study focused on the relationship between sustainability reporting (SR), the circular economy (CE), and the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including an examination of the mediator role of the CE in the SR–SDGs relationship. The SR concept refers to the ways in which companies communicate with their internal and external stakeholders about their sustainability initiatives. Researchers have confirmed that the CE contributes to the achievement of SDGs based on SR. However, the literature does not offer any comprehensive frameworks that integrate these three concepts, which constitutes an important research gap. More specifically, very few studies have explored how social economy entities (SEEs) report the ways they contribute to achieving the SDGs while implementing CE practices. This research thus sought to make a significant contribution to filling this lacuna. Statistical analyses were conducted to determine how SR influences SDGs and how SR promotes these goals through the CE. Variance-based structural equation modeling via partial least squares was applied to process data on a sample of 90 SEEs in Spain. The results show that entities that provide sufficient SR often communicate how they are implementing SDGs. CE practices have a significant effect on this SR–SDGs relationship. The findings thus make an important contribution to the literature by exploring the link between these three strategies (i.e., SR, the SDGs, and the CE) in organizational contexts and thus providing a foundation for new business models.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Local Whittle estimation in time-varying long memory series
The memory parameter is usually assumed to be constant in traditional long memory time series. We relax this restriction by considering the memory a time-varying function that depends on a finite number of parameters. A time-varying Local Whittle estimator of these parameters, and hence of the memory function, is proposed. Its consistency and asymptotic normality are shown for locally stationary and locally non-stationary long memory processes, where the spectral behaviour is restricted only at frequencies close to the origin. Its good finite sample performance is shown in a Monte Carlo exercise and in two empirical applications, highlighting its benefits over the fully parametric Whittle estimator proposed by Palma and Olea (2010). Standard inference techniques for the constancy of the memory are also proposed based on this estimator.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Measuring and managing the Value-at-Risk of a stocks and bonds portfolio
This thesis examines the use of multiple models to estimate Value at Risk (VaR) and assess the financial risk associated with a diversified investment portfolio. VaR is a key risk management tool commonly used by portfolio managers and financial institutions to estimate the potential maxi-mum loss over a given time frame and confidence level. The analysis focuses on four distinct mod-els: the Parametric (Variance-Covariance) approach, Historical Simulation, the Skewed General-ized Student-t (SGSt) distribution, and Quantile Regression VaR. Each model reflects different as-sumptions about return behaviour and risk factor sensitivity, offering a well-rounded comparison of risk estimates.
For this research, I used daily data from both stocks and government bonds, covering the period between 2007 and 2024. This stretch of time includes key market events like the 2008 financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic, which gives a good chance to see how the models hold up under different types of market stress. To get a fuller picture of the risks involved, I also included other important factors like interest rate changes and currency fluctuations.
To better manage potential losses, the research introduces hedging strategies aimed at reducing exposure without heavily altering the portfolio structure. The contribution of individual risk sources is examined using marginal VaR decomposition to provide a more complete picture of portfolio risk, the study also considers other key drivers such as interest rate movements and for-eign exchange volatility.
To evaluate the reliability of the risk models, Backtesting is conducted using statistical tools such as Kupiec’s Proportion of Failures (POF) test and Christoffersen’s Conditional Coverage test, both of which help determine whether the models consistently identify tail risks.
The overall results show that both the choice of model and how assets are allocated across the portfolio have a significant influence on risk outcomes especially during periods of elevated un-certainty in the financial markets.
The potential role of cryptocurrencies as safe-haven assets: A worldwide empirical analysis
The role of cryptocurrencies in the contemporary financial landscape remains ambiguous and vastly debated in the literature. While some authors consider cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin, to be a form of “digital gold”, others contend that their decentralized nature categorizes them as speculative assets with no intrinsic value. This study intends to contribute to this discussion by investigating the role of cryptocurrencies, specifically Bitcoin and Tether, in functioning as safe-haven assets across various regions and asset classes, including stock indices and commodities. To accomplish this, a Dynamic Conditional Correlation GARCH model was utilized to estimate the time-varying conditional correlations, focusing on the most extreme levels of negative returns, between the selected cryptocurrencies and five regional indices: the S&P 500, STOXX 600, MSCI Asia Ex Japan, MSCI Pacific, and MSCI World, in addition to two commodities: gold and oil.
The correlation values obtained led to the conclusion that both Bitcoin and Tether can function as safe-haven assets under certain market conditions. Bitcoin proved particularly effective as a protective asset during the most extreme instances of negative market returns, while Tether demonstrated a more pronounced safe-haven role during moderate market downturns. Regarding commodities, Tether exhibited both hedging and safe-haven capabilities, whereas Bitcoin played a more limited protective role. Although both cryptocurrencies displayed varying degrees of safe-haven behavior across different asset classes, their effectiveness was found to be asset-specific and dependent on market conditions.O papel das criptomoedas no panorama financeiro contemporâneo continua a ser um tema ambíguo e amplamente debatido na literatura.
Knowledge-based machine learning approach to indirect prospecting methodologies for monument identification
Experts use domain knowledge and experience to identify and analyze archaeological monuments from satellite images. However, traditional object detection methods often rely solely on image data and operate as “black boxes,” which frequently result in false positives, especially when detecting small archaeological sites.
For machines to effectively leverage domain knowledge, it must be organized in an interoperable format, addressing the challenge posed by scattered and fragmented data, particularly across multiple disciplines. This study tackles this issue by converting domain knowledge from diverse and multidisciplinary sources into a machine-readable format to reduce false positives in automatic object detection.
The study links information about archaeological sites and their landscapes by implementing a Knowledge Graph (KG) based on CIDOC-CRM, its CRMgeo extension, and GeoSPARQL ontologies. This KG integrates textual data from semantic records with spatial data from vector topographic maps, encompassing (i) metadata definitions, (ii) general and specific concepts, and (iii) the geometry of each represented entity. This representation can provide insights into elements within a scene that may not be visible in images.
Subsequently, the output from an object detection approach was integrated with the KG to train a Knowledge Graph–Machine Learning (KG-ML) model. This model identifies areas of interest (AOIs) where dolmens in Pavia and Mora (Portugal) are likely to be found, using contextual knowledge to exclude images with a low probability of accurate detections. The KG-ML approach effectively reduced false positives, provided contextual information that clarified recognition decisions, and enhanced the understanding of detected sites.
