Fonologi Dialek Melayu Sarawak Di Kampung Pinang, Kota Samarahan: Analisis Perbanding
This study aims to examine the phonology of the Sarawak Malay dialect in Kampung Pinang, Kota Samarahan: a comparative analysis by focusing on two main objectives, namely identifying the phonological aspects of the Sarawak Malay dialect in Kampung Pinang. The second objective is to analyze the lexical comparison in the Sarawak Malay dialect in Kampung Pinang, Kota Samarahan. The research methodology used is qualitative. A total of4 female respondents were interviewed to obtain data using the List of 100 Swadesh Word List and the study data was analyzed using the theory of generative phonology developed by Chomsky and Halle (1968) through The Sound Pattern of English (SPE). The study finding show that the DMS spoken in Kampung Pinang has its own phonological system that distinguishes it from standard Malay. Among the main characteristics identified include the
use of glottal sounds such as /ʔ/, vowel variations that experience a process of raising or lowering the sound, and the presence of diphthongs that are unstable in standard Malay but exist consistently in DMS. This study also reveals several phonological processes that occur systematically in the dialect such as final consonant deletion, sound addition (epenthesis), and phoneme changes in certain contexts. For example, some words containing the sound /r/ in standard Malay are pronounced with a rougher or ‘rolled’ sound in DMS, while the vowel /a/at the end of words tends to be replaced by /o/
Unsur Alam Dalam Bahasa Kiasan Masyarakat Kenyah Uma Badeng Sungai Koyan: Satu Kajian Semantik Inkuisitif
Inquisitive semantics is a field in linguistics that can analyze and explain the true meaning of an utterance by looking at the intellect and worldview of the speaker. This approach emphasizes not only the literal meaning of an expression, but also the implicit meaning rooted in the
cultural experience, beliefs, and lifestyle of the speaker. There are many studies of inquisitive semantics that focus on figurative language in Malay society such as proverbs and idioms. However, studies on the figurative language of indigenous people, especially the Kenyah Uma Badeng community, are still very limited and receive little attention. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to interpret the implicit meaning in proverbs that contain elements of nature among the Kenyah Uma Badeng community, by using the Inquisitive Semantics approach by Norhasimah Jalaluddin (2014) through three levels of analysis, namely script, resonance semantics, and inquisitive semantics. This study is entirely qualitative with data obtained through interviews with native speakers and analysis of proverbs that are still used in daily life. This entire analysis is expected to provide a more accurate and in-depth understanding of the function and true meaning of figurative language with natural elements in the culture of the Kenyah Uma Badeng community, as well as proving that figurative language is not just a linguistic decoration, but a reflection of the community's values and philosophy of life
Deskriptif Fonologi Subdialek Melayu Spaoh
This study aims to describe the phonological system of the Spaoh Malay subdialect spoken in
Betong, Sarawak. The objectives of this research are to identify the phoneme inventory,
diphthongs, vowel clusters and consonant clusters, as well as to analyze the syllable structure
in the Spaoh Malay subdialect. This qualitative study with a descriptive approach was
conducted through interviews with four native speakers of the Spaoh Malay subdialect aged 50
and above. Data were collected using two main instruments: the word list method with 100
words and the word domain method categorized according to body parts, plants, animals,
clothing and equipment. The findings show that the Spaoh Malay subdialect uses an 8-vowel
system namely (i, e, ɛ, ə, a, u, o, ɔ) and 19 consonant phonemes. The identified diphthong
variants include [oj], [aj] and [ɛi], vowel clusters consist of [uo], [ao] and [oa], while consonant
clusters comprise [ŋk], [ŋg], [nt], [nd], [ns], [nʧ], [mp], [mb] and [st]. The syllable structure in
this subdialect encompasses five patterns namely V, VK, KV, KVK and KVV. This study
contributes to the empirical data of Sarawak Malay dialect research and assists in the
development of language and cultural studies in Sarawak
Factors Influencing Electronic Cigarette use among Young Adults in Sarawak, Malaysia: A Hierarchical Analysis
Introduction: The rapid global rise in electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use has led to increasing research interest, yet factors influencing its adoption remain underexplored in
Malaysia. This study investigates sociodemographic and psychosocial determinants of ecigarette use in the Samarahan and Kuching divisions of Sarawak, Malaysia.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among smokers aged 18 and above. A total of 474 participants were recruited using cluster sampling. Data collection was
performed through face-to-face interviews using a structured questionnaire. Hierarchical multinomial logistic regression was applied to identify key predictors of e-cigarette use.
Results: Among participants, 27.8% were e-smokers, 25.8% were switchers, and 46.4% were dual smokers. The analysis revealed that females were more likely to be e-smokers
(AOR = 5.889, p < .001) and switchers (AOR = 2.647, p = .021) than males. Additionally, degree holders were more likely to be e-smokers than dual smokers (AOR = 4.106, p =
.025). Psychosocial factors, such as subjective norms (AOR = 1.435, p = .023) and perceived usefulness (AOR = 1.616, p = .016), were significant predictors of e-cigarette
use. Conclusion: Sociodemographic and psychosocial factors, such as gender and education, influence e-cigarette use in Sarawak. These findings provide valuable insights for
designing targeted public health strategies to regulate e-cigarette use and support smoking cessation efforts in Malaysia
Innovative Zn-Doped TiO2 Catalysts for Adsorptive-Photocatalytic Removal of Polyethylene Microplastics
Polyethylene (PE) microplastics persist in aquatic systems, posing ecological and health concerns due to their high resistance to natural degradation. This work explores the application of microwave-assisted zinc-doped titanium dioxide (Zn–TiO₂) catalysts for the combined adsorption and photocatalytic removal of PE microplastics under visible light. Catalysts were synthesized through microwave modification and assessed across different pH levels, catalyst dosages, and initial PE concentrations. The highest photocatalytic efficiency (85%) was obtained under acidic conditions (pH 3) at an optimal dosage of 3 g/L with 10 mg/L of PE. Zn–TiO₂ exhibited superior performance compared to pristine TiO₂ and ZnO, demonstrating enhanced adsorption and photocatalytic activity attributed to the synergistic effect of Zn incorporation, which improved light utilization and reduced electron–hole recombination. Reusability tests confirmed good stability, with 70% efficiency retained after five cycles. These findings establish microwave-modified Zn TiO₂ as a promising, durable, and sustainable photocatalyst for mitigating microplastic pollution in aqueous environments
3D GIS for Advanced Building Management
Traditionally, building information, particularly in strata title management, has been organized using building plans and extensive data filing systems. While these plans are easily understood by professionals in surveying and architecture, 3D visualization provides a more effective way to convey information to a broader audience. Developing 3D models for stratified property units enhances building information management by integrating these models with corresponding databases, thereby raising the standards of current management practices. Tools like Google SketchUp for 3D modeling and ArcGIS integration play a crucial role in this process. Previously, data management was a conventional process that required significant physical storage space and resulted in time-consuming data retrieval. Integrating 3D models within a GIS framework revolutionizes this process, streamlining building management and significantly improving efficiency. Additionally, 3D GIS supports better decision-making and planning by providing advanced spatial analysis and visualization capabilities. Thunderstorm Prediction Model Using Hybrid Clustering and Machine Learning Approach
This study presents a novel thunderstorm prediction model leveraging a hybrid approach that integrates the Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE), �-Means clustering and Machine Learning (ML) Models. Using historical lightning and meteorological data from the southern region of Peninsular Malaysia, the study evaluates the performance of five ML models including Decision Tree (DT), Random Forest (RF), Extra Trees (ET), Gradient Boosting (GB), and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), based on the standard performance evaluation metrics such as accuracy,
precision, recall, and F1-score. The results demonstrate that ensemble methods, particularly RF, consistently outperform other models across all three clusters, achieving prediction accuracy exceeding 95%. These findings underscore the effectiveness of RF in capturing data complexities and making accurate thunderstorm predictions. The study further
emphasizes the role of balanced datasets through SMOTE and
robust clustering techniques in enhancing model reliability.
Future work will focus on integrating real-time data and
incorporating additional meteorological variables to further
improve predictive performance
From identity and image to intention: Mediating role of the experience economy in Shandong’s heritage tourism
This study investigates how cultural identity and destination image influence behavioral intention in the context of cultural heritage tourism in Shandong Province, China, applying the Stimulus–Organism–Response (SOR) model. Drawing on Pine and Gilmore’s Experience Economy framework, the research positions the four experiential realms (entertainment, education, aesthetics, and
escapism) as mediators that transform cultural and perceptual cues into behavioral outcomes. Data were collected through a structured survey of 387 heritage tourists in Shandong and analyzed using structural equation modeling with bootstrapping procedures. The results indicate that both cultural identity and destination image exert significant positive effects on behavioral intention, and that these effects are partly mediated by the Experience Economy dimensions. The findings clarify contradictory results in previous studies where identity and image did not consistently predict intention, showing that experiential processes are the critical mechanism linking cultural cues with tourist behavior. The study makes three contributions: it extends the SOR model by explicitly testing the Experience Economy as a mediating construct, it enriches the understanding of cultural identity and destination image in heritage tourism, and it provides practical guidance for heritage managers in Shandong. Specifically, heritage experiences that combine identity cues with immersive, aesthetically appealing, and educational elements are most likely to foster loyalty and advocacy
PENGIMBUHAN KATA DALAM BAHASA KEDAYAN BEKENU, MIRI
This study aims to describe one of the morphological processes, namely verb affixation in
Kedayan Language. The objective of this study is to identify the types of verb affixes to form
derived words in Kedayan Language and describe the function of each affix in Kedayan
Language. This study is qualitative in nature with a descriptive approach that describes verb
affixes in Kedayan Language. Data were collected from 5 informants consisting of residents of
Kampung Bukit Kawang in Bekenu District, Miri who were selected based on the set criteria.
There were 100 verbs selected from the Swadesh list. Asmah Haji Omar Structural Approach
was used in this study. The findings of the study are that there are 11 prefix affixes in the
Kedayan language, consisting of the affixes [me-], [mem-], [men-], [meng], [di-], [be-], [te-],
[pe-], [pem-], [pen-] and [peng-], three suffix affixes, namely the affixes [-an], [-kan] and [-i]
and four affixes, namely the affixes [meN...-kan], [be-...-an], [di-...-kan] and [meN-...-i].
Furthermore, verb affixes in the Kedayan language have active inflectional and derivational
functions, which refer to actions that are happening or have already happened, as well as affixes
that cause word class changes. A total of 100 original lexical verbs in the Kedayan language
have been collected based on the Swadesh verb list. This study describes in depth the function
of affixes on verbs in the Kedayan language and explains in detail the morphological structure
and aspects of the language
