    No full text

PHARMACOLOGICAL POTENTIAL OF NATURE-BASED THERAPY FOR PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING: A COMMUNITY INTERVENTION STUDY IN HULU SELANGOR, MALAYSIA

    No full text
This pilot study investigates the pharmacological potential of nature-based therapy (NBT) in enhancing psychological well-being among adults in Hulu Selangor, Malaysia. Using a quantitative research design, 35 participants (85.7% female, 14.3% male) engaged in structured nature interventions, with psychological outcomes measured pre- and post-intervention using the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21) and program evaluation questionnaires. Results demonstrated significant improvements in mental health, with 77.1% of participants strongly agreeing that NBT enhanced their psychological well-being and 68.6% reporting better emotional stability. Additionally, the program fostered environmental stewardship, as 68.6% of participants adopted eco-friendly practices, and strengthened community engagement, with 71.4% actively participating in green initiatives. Despite limitations such as a small sample size and gender imbalance, the findings suggest that NBT is an effective, culturally relevant intervention for addressing mental health challenges in semi-urban Malaysian communities. The study highlights the dual benefits of NBT in improving individual well-being while promoting environmental awareness and social cohesion. These results support the integration of nature-based approaches into public health strategies, particularly in rapidly urbanizing regions. Future research should explore long-term effects, biomarker correlations, and strategies to enhance male participation in such programs

An AI-Enhanced Motivational Model for ESP in Aviation: Insights from Chinese Vocational Flight Attendant Training

    No full text
This study investigates motivation in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) among Chinese vocational flight attendant students and proposes an AI-enhanced motivational model grounded in Self-Determination Theory (SDT). Adopting a convergent mixed-methods design, the study combined quantitative and qualitative data sources: a questionnaire survey with 186 students, semi-structured interviews with eight students and three ESP instructors, together with classroom observations, to triangulate findings. The questionnaire established motivational profiles, while interviews and observations provided contextual insights into instructional practices. Descriptive results indicated that students highly value English for both academic achievement and future employment, yet report competence gaps in writing, vocabulary and grammar with speaking identified as the most urgently required skill. Thematic analysis further identified five contextual levers shaping motivation: authenticity of tasks, feedback quality and timeliness, opportunities for interaction, learning environment and class size and technology integration. Interpreted through the SDT framework, these patterns reveal that limited choice and pacing constrain autonomy, lecture-heavy formats weaken relatedness and delayed or generic feedback undermines competence. In response, the study presents an SDT-aligned, AI-enhanced motivational model as a design proposal for piloting in aviation ESP classrooms. The model integrates automatic speech recognition, for instance, individualized feedback, VR-based cabin simulations for authentic scenario practice, AI passengers for interactive role-play and adaptive micro-modules for learner controlled pacing. The study’s originality lies in integrating Self-Determination Theory with AI-supported ESP course design in aviation, extending motivational theory into an under-explored domain

The Impact of Urbanization on Preserving the Miring Tradition among the Iban Community in Sungai Pasai, Sibu, Sarawak

    No full text
Urbanization has reshaped the socio-cultural landscape of many indigenous communities worldwide, including the Iban of Sarawak, Malaysia. This paper examines the impact of urbanization on the preservation of Miring, a ritual deeply embedded in the Iban worldview as a symbolic offering to Petara (deities) and ancestral spirits. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the study was conducted in Sungai Pasai, Sibu, where urban migration, modernization, and religious conversion have significantly altered cultural practices. Data were collected through participant observation of rituals, in-depth interviews with longhouse leaders, ritual experts (Lemambang), and community elders, alongside document analysis. The findings reveal that urbanization has led to a generational decline in the knowledge and practice of Miring. Younger generations, influenced by education, modern employment, and Christianity, often perceive the ritual as outdated. Additionally, the costs of ritual offerings and the dwindling number of ritual specialists have further weakened its practice. However, the study also uncovers resilience strategies, such as intergenerational teaching, embedding Miring elements within Gawai celebrations, and community-driven cultural clubs. These adaptations highlight the dynamic ways in which the Iban negotiate modernity while striving to preserve cultural identity. The paper concludes that while Miring faces existential threats in the context of urbanization, it continues to function as a cultural anchor for community cohesion and spiritual continuity. Efforts to safeguard the ritual should focus on community based education, documentation, and state-level cultural preservation policies

    No full text
The paper deals with contemporary trends, challenges, and perspectives of the development of women entrepreneurship in a global and national context. The starting assumption of the work is that women entrepreneurship today plays an important role not only in economic growth but also in the processes of social transformation and gender equality. Key theoretical approaches, obstacles faced by women entrepreneurs, as well as opportunities for their inclusion in innovation and digital sectors, are analyzed. The method of analyzing secondary sources and a comparative approach that connects global and local trends was used. The results indicate that women still have difficult access to finance, the market, and support networks, but also that the situation is gradually changing through the growth of digital entrepreneurship, the development of mentoring programs, and institutional initiatives. Serbia follows most European trends, with the need for further strengthening of the financial and educational support system. It is concluded that women entrepreneurship has the potential to become one of the key pillars of sustainable development, provided that long-term and coordinated institutional support is provided

    No full text
The study examined strategies for personalisation of instructor-student interactions in online teaching by lecturers in Malaysia, the Philippines, India and Indonesia. The study involved 401 college/university students who filled in an online questionnaire. Results on the usage of technologies for online learning showed that some students had inadequate data for online learning in the Philippines. There was more frequent use of smartphones for online learning in the Philippines and Indonesia, and more frequent use of laptops in India and Malaysia. When it came to how promptly lecturers responded to student queries, we found that they normally replied within the same day. Lecturers employed various strategies to personalise their online teaching, such as reminding students of assignment deadlines, replying in chat/discussion threads, using humour, facilitating student friendships and sharing personal experiences. However, they drew a line at posting photos, considering it to be inappropriate. Filipino lecturers were the most student-centric. They were the most frequent users of strategies for personalising instructor-student interactions, and also gave students more leeway in making suggestions on the delivery of academic content, as compared to lecturers from Malaysia, India and Indonesia. A cross-country analysis showed that Indonesian students had the most initiative to make contact with their lecturers, with Malaysian students leaving the responsibility to lecturers. The cross-country study indicates that from the students’ perspective, quick responses to their messages help foster a sense of connection and support, enhancing the relational aspect of online learning

The Bidayuh Language of Sarawak, Malaysia: Language Use and Proficiency

    No full text
Bidayuh is an indigenous group living in Sarawak, Malaysia. The Bidayuh language is currently not taught in schools but experimented as a medium of instruction in some kindergartens. Past studies have shown that factors such as rural– urban migration, intermarriage, and higher education are causing a shift away from the Bidayuh language. However, they are conducted on a small-scale and little is known about the language maintenance situation among its community. This chapter presents the findings of Bidayuh language use and proficiency in the community. Analysis of the questionnaire data from 467 Bidayuh respondents showed that only 72.2% spoke Bidayuh as their first language, indicating that many no longer learn/ speak it as first language. On a daily basis, 66.6% reported speaking it. Based on their parentage, 71.7% considered themselves as pure Bidayuh, 27.84% as half-Bidayuh, and 0.43% felt that they had lost most of their Bidayuh characteristics. The findings showed that the respondents have better ability in understanding a conversation in the Bidayuh language compared to speaking it. They have lower literacy in the Bidayuh language because it is a spoken language and thus, not many learn it through formal instruction. Additionally, the large regional variations in the Bidayuh varieties accentuate the problems of standardizing the Bidayuh language for instruction in schools. A comparison of the results for the youngest and oldest groups of respondents indicate that the Bidayuh language maintenance is difficult in the face of the importance of English for career, and perceptions of Sarawak Malay dialect, English and Iban as strong languages in Sarawak

This study aims to investigate the language choices of young Malay speakers in the Simunjan district of Sarawak, focusing on two main objectives. The first objective is to identify the most frequently used language by young Malays in Simunjan across five domains: family, friendship, education, religion, and employment. The second objective is to explore their attitudes towards the importance of using the local dialect as a marker of cultural identity and as their mother tongue. The study employs a qualitative methodology. A total of 100 respondents completed a questionnaire, and the data were analyzed using Fishman's Domain Theory (1972). The findings reveal that the young Malay generation in Simunjan maintains a positive attitude toward the use of the Simunjan Malay dialect in various aspects of life. This dialect remains dominant in the domains of family, friendship, religion, and employment, highlighting its significant role in preserving cultural identity and fostering strong social relationships. Although there is a shift toward the use of standard Malay in education and formal situations, the use of the local dialect remains vibrant, especially in informal communication and interactions within the local community. These findings confirm that Simunjan Malay dialect remains relevant and plays a significant role in the daily lives of the younger generation in Simunja

Mapping the Landscape: A Bibliometric Analysis of Neurofeedback and Biofeedback Research in Children's Learning

    No full text
Neurofeedback training (NFT) and biofeedback are emerging non-invasive brain modulation techniques that have shown potential in improving cognitive and behavioral functions in children, particularly those with neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD and dyslexia. In this short bibliometric review analysis, we examined 201 peer-reviewed articles published between 1990 and 2024 related to NFT and biofeedback interventions in children’s learning. The Scopus database was used with the main search theme of “neurofeedback in children’s learning,” and bibliometric indicators such as keyword co-occurrence, author collaboration, publication trends, and citation counts were analyzed. The results revealed that while the broader field of NFT is expanding, its application in children’s learning remains underexplored. Research themes were primarily focused on attention control, reading ability, cognition, and behavior management in children with ADHD and dyslexia. The United States emerged as the leading contributor, producing the highest number of publications and co-authorships in this area. Western countries dominated the field, likely due to stronger research infrastructure, greater access to funding, and well-established interdisciplinary collaborations. Despite advancements in medical and cognitive neuroscience, several barriers hinder the global adoption of NFT and biofeedback in educational contexts. These include high equipment costs, limited accessibility, a shortage of trained personnel, and a lack of standardized intervention protocols. This review provides a foundation for understanding current research directions and identifies critical gaps in the field. In conclusion, NFT and biofeedback represent promising tools for enhancing children’s learning and merit further research and development for broader implementation in educational settings
