Interpretable Hybrid Deep Learning for Real-Time Multi-Horizon Forecasting of Load, Solar, and Wind Generation Using Multi-Source Energy and Weather Data

    No full text
The proposed study introduces synthesizable hybrid deep learning architecture in real time multi-horizon load, solar, and wind power generation prediction through combination of multi-source of meteorological and power system observations. To meet the increasing demand of precise and explainable energy predictions, the given model integrates empirical wavelet transform (EWT) to break down the signal down into small pieces with advanced neural networks, including LSTM, CNN, and Transformers, and exalted with SHAP to be explainable. Public datasets were also based on the weather (temperature, humidity, wind speed) and energy generation/load that were used in various geographic areas. The comparative benchmarking between the traditional (Random Forest, XGBoost) and standalone deep learning models showed that the hybrid model performed better and was rated as 5-12 times worse in terms of RMSE and R-2 metrics. In particular, the accuracy of the predictions increased as well as the forecasting accuracy improved (0.82 in the traditional models compared to 0.91 in the hybrid with weather integration) and the inference time was minimized to be deployed in real-time. Transfer learning should be used to adapt to the domain so that fine-tuning can be done on target regions and that the increase in accuracy can be retained in the face of regional changes in data. Analysis of interpretability revealed that weather conditions including temperature and wind velocity contributed greatly to predictions, which increased the confidence of stakeholders. The findings show the possibilities of interpretable hybrid models in the smart grid management and point to the future directions like the deployment of edges, real-time updates based on IoT, and policy-level integration

Evaluation of Lung Cancer Risk from Incense Burning and Nitrogen Dioxide Exposure through Meta-analyses and Molecular Docking

    No full text
Lung cancer (LC) remains a leading cause of cancer mortality worldwide, with environmental exposures playing a pivotal role in its aetiology. Nitrogen dioxide (NO2), a primary toxicant released both from incense combustion and outdoor air pollution (AP), has been increasingly implicated in LC risk. To address this, three interlinked approaches were undertaken. First, a meta-analysis of case-control studies in Asian populations demonstrated that incense burning, a significant indoor source of NO2 and other carcinogens, is associated with increased LC risk (pooled odds ratio [OR] = 1.33, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.20-1.48). Second, a meta-analysis of cohort studies beyond European countries suggested that NO2 exposure is associated with elevated LC incidence and mortality (pooled hazard ratio [HR] per 10 parts per billion (ppb) increase in NO2 = 1.08, 95% CI: 1.03-1.13). Third, molecular docking analyses were conducted to elucidate the mechanistic basis of these associations, revealing that NO2 and its reactive surrogates, including peroxynitrite (ONOO⁻), 2-nitrophenol (2-NT), 3-nitrotyrosine (3-NT), and nitrobenzene, exhibit binding affinities with proteins central to oxidative stress, inflammation, and oncogenic signalling pathways implicated in LC pathogenesis. In conclusion, these findings provide converging evidence that NO2, whether derived from indoor sources such as incense burning or from outdoor AP, contributes to lung carcinogenesis through both epidemiological associations and molecular interactions

Nonlinear Performance of Composite Cold-formed Steel Joints with Lightweight Concrete: An Experimental and Computational Study

    No full text
Semi-rigid composite cold-formed steel joints are widely used in contemporary buildings and constructions because of their well-known structural advantages and cost-effectiveness. Cold-formed steel enhances structural performance through its favourable strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance and ease of fabrication. This study examines the mechanical behaviour of a composite connection between cold-formed steel and lightweight concrete, aiming to analyze the factors influencing its ultimate moment resistance, initial stiffness, and failure modes. A total of 14 composite cold-formed steel joint specimens are tested in a full-scale isolated joint experiment. Various factors were imposed on these samples, such as different sizes of tension bolts, varying thicknesses of gusset plate connectors, densities of lightweight aggregate concrete, slab thicknesses, and diameters of reinforcing bars. Computational ABAQUS tool is used for numerical modelling to verify and analyze how varying geometrical factors impact the mechanical characteristics of composite cold-formed steel joint structures. Strength ratios between 0.90 and 1.17 demonstrate strong correspondence between experimental and numerical results in the moment-rotation analysis. This study was able to provide valuable insights and a framework for an in-depth examination of the capabilities and durability of semi-rigid or partially rigid composite steel constructions

    Crabs and Shrimps

    No full text
The first record of a crab from the Niah limestone area dates back to 1978, when the late Lipke Bijdeley Holthuis (1921–2008), a renowned Dutch carcinologist, described Adeleana chapmani. Holthuis is known for his significant contributions to the knowledge of limestone cave crustaceans in both Gunung Mulu and Niah. A. chapmani is a semiterrestrial and troglobitic species that is strictly confined to the cave system and is endemic to the Great Cave. Compared to the limestone caves of Mulu, the crustaceans of Niah are relatively less studied. Small collections over the past 10 years have added several species of crabs and prawns to the known fauna of the limestone habitat and the streams flowing within the catchment. Currently, five species of crabs and four species of shrimps have been documented from the Niah area (see Checklist)

Ceftazidime-resistance in pediatric melioidosis : A case report and literature review

    No full text
We report a first case of ceftazidime-resistant pediatric melioidosis involving a previously healthy seven-year-old boy who presented with right lobar pneumonia complicated with a 5-cm lung abscess. Ceftazidime was initiated on Day-6 of admission when Burkholderia pseudomallei (ceftazidime-susceptible, minimum inhibitory concentration [MIC] 1.0 mcg/mL) was isolated from blood. Despite ceftazidime therapy at the recommended dosage, he developed fulminant septic shock and respiratory failure on Day-18 of hospitalization, requiring invasive ventilation, hemodynamic support, and continuous renal replacement therapy. His antibiotic was empirically escalated to meropenem; ceftazidime-resistant B. pseudomallei (MIC 32 mcg/mL) was subsequently isolated from blood and endotracheal secretions. He improved after two weeks of intensive care and was discharged well after two months of hospitalization. Our literature review on ceftazidime-resistant B. pseudomallei infection indicates that acquired resistance is a rare but potentially lethal treatment-related complication. All melioidosis patients should be carefully monitored during treatment with ceftazidime (or other β-lactams) for the development of antimicrobial resistance

Design and Evaluation of Modified Laval Nozzle for Atomization Performance

    No full text
Particulate matter generated during the mining, processing, and transportation of coal and stone materials has become one of the primary sources of air pollution, especially fine particles with small particle sizes. The traditional nozzle requires high-pressure conditions, and the atomization droplets are large and uneven. This study aims to design a nozzle with a simple structure and good atomization performance and to study the influence of nozzle structure parameters and operating conditions on atomization performance. First, a linear Laval nozzle was designed. Then, the VOF (Volume of Fluid) model and DPM (Discrete Phase Model) of Fluent are used to simulate the internal and external fields of the nozzle and analyze the velocity, pressure, droplet size, and atomization angle. Finally, the droplet size and angle of the Laval nozzle spray were measured by experiments, and comparisons with numerical analysis were also conducted. The results show that the flow inside the linear Laval nozzle can reach supersonic speed. The optimized water pressure parameters are 0.1 MPa, air pressure of 0.5 MPa, nozzle outlet diameter of 2.5 mm, and oscillator distance of 4 mm. Compared to traditional nozzles, the water pressure is reduced by over 90%, and the D (3,2) droplet diameter decreases by over 50%. Moreover, the spray angle increases by approximately 67.5%. Some fitted curves have been plotted, enabling the prediction of velocity and atomization angle within a specific range. The linear Laval nozzle studied in this research is easy to manufacture, exhibits excellent atomization performance, operates at low pressure, and is cost-effective. Particularly, a combination-type nozzle is proposed, which expands the atomization angle. The linear nozzles are applicable in diverse enclosed environments such as mines, construction sites, and processing plants. They can improve dust removal efficiency effectively, thus significantly contributing to human health and environmental protection
