    This essay explores the specificities and critical issues of research in educational linguistics and language teaching methodology. A significant focus is placed on the construction and use of questionnaires in research practices, outlining the critical phases of design, including defining objectives, formulating questions, and analyzing data, while emphasizing the challenges related to the validity and reliability of the tool. The discussion also highlights the necessity of methodological triangulation, integrating questionnaires, observations, and interviews to achieve a more nuanced understanding of educational phenomena. The essay further addresses key biases and methodological paradoxes that may influence research, such as cultural and confirmation bias, as well as the paradox of authenticity and social desirability. In summary, the essay offers a nuanced and interdisciplinary problematization of the characterization of research in educational linguistics and language teaching. It suggests that integrating diverse approaches, along with a critical awareness of their methodological limitations, can serve as a valuable resource for strengthening research practices

    Effetti di confinamento e perturbazioni in sistemi vettoriali di materia attiva

    Per materia attiva si intendon sistemi fuori dall'equilibrio in grado di trasformare l'energia non termica presente nell'ambiente circostante in autopropulsione. Il moto collettivo o flocking è forse uno degli esempi più interessanti di comportamenti collettivi esibiti da sistemi di materia attiva, come dimostrano le esibizioni aeree degli stormi di storni. La nostra comprensione del comportamento del moto collettivo libero è ad oggi abbastanza completa, almeno quando l'effetto delle interazioni idrodinamiche indotte dal fluido circostante può essere tranquillamente trascurato. La nostra comprensione del moto collettivo quando è ottenuto rompendo esplicitamente una simmetria rotazionale continua è invece ancora soggetto di ricera. Questa tesi esplora gli effetti della rottura esplicita della simmetria, sia globale che locale, sulla dinamica del moto collettivo. La rottura della simmetria a livello globale può essere dovuta a un ambiente anisotropo, in cui una direzione viene favorita e determina la direzione di flocking. Una domanda chiave affrontata in questa tesi è come sia possibile rilevare la presenza di piccole anisotropie nel sistema senza una conoscenza preliminare dell'asimmetria ambientale sottostante. Inoltre, questa tesi esamina l'influenza della rottura della simmetria indotta in sistemi confinati. Nei sistemi confinati di flocking, possono sorgere anisotropie locali ai bordi, che influenzano in modo significativo il comportamento del sistema sia in prossimità che lontanto dai bordi. Questa tesi si concentrerà in particolare sugli effetti indotti dal confinamento di un fluido polare attivo tra due pareti parallele, mostrando come l'effetto dei bordi sia estensivo. La tesi prenderà infine in considerazione un confinamento ispirato al comportamento fototattico di alcuni cianobatteri, mostrando come alcune caratteristiche chiave della materia attiva, come l'accumulo ai bordi, siano possibili anche in assenza di confinamento meccanico.Active matter, i.e., nonequilibrium systems capable of transforming some non-thermal energy present in the environment into self-propulsion or other functional mechanisms, has attracted the attention of the statistical physics community in the past decades. Flocking is perhaps one of the most intriguing examples of collective behaviors exhibited by active matter systems, as shown by the aerial displays of starling flocks. While our knowledge of the bulk behaviour of free collective motion, i.e., flocking, is now fairly complete, at least when the surrounding fluid may be safely neglected (the so-called dry approximation) much less is known when collective motion is achieved explicitly breaking a continuos rotational symmetry, either at the global or local level. This thesis explores the effects of explicit symmetry breaking, both global and local, on the dynamics of collective motion. Symmetry breaking at the global level can perhaps be due to an anisotropic environment, where a favored direction determines the mean flocking direction. A key question addressed in this thesis is how it is possible to detect the presence of small anisotropies in the system without prior knowledge of the underlying environmental asymmetry. Moreover, this thesis examines the influence of boundary-induced symmetry breaking. In confined flocking systems, local anisotropies can arise at the boundaries, which significantly affect both the bulk and boundary behavior of the system, especially in finite-sized setups. This thesis will focus in particular on the effects induced by confining a polar active fluid between two parallel and repelling walls, showing how the effect of the boundaries extends far into the bulk of the system. This thesis will finally consider a more subtle confinement, inspired by the phototactic behavior of certain cyanobacteria, showing how some key features of active matter, such as accumulation at boundaries, are possible also in the absence of mechanical confinement. The results shed light on how symmetry-breaking perturbations, whether imposed globally or locally, alter the dynamics of active matter systems and offer new insights into the control of collective motion in these systems

    How is China shaping Africa? The role of Chinese development projects on land cover transformation

    This paper investigates the impact of Chinese development projects on the change of land covering in the African continent over the years 2000-2017 by means of a new gridded dataset. The geo-referenced panel dataset matches information on Chinese development projects with satellite data on the evolution of land surface. The econometric analysis shows that Chinese development projects have played a significant role in the transformation of the African land covering, and that the Chinese intervention in Africa has had a significant impact on the transition of land covering from natural to artificial surfaces

    Functional Polarization of Liver Macrophages by Glyco Gold Nanoparticles

    Macrophages are crucial drivers of innate immunity. Reprogramming macrophages to a restorative phenotype in cancer or autoimmune diseases can stop their cancer-promoting activity or trigger anti-inflammatory immunity. Glycans have emerged as key components for immunity as they are involved in many pathophysiological disorders. Previous studies have demonstrated that supraphysiological amounts of mannose (Man) or sialic acid (Sia) can inhibit tumor growth and stimulate differentiation of regulatory T cells. Man is known to affect glucose metabolism in glycolysis by competing for the same intracellular transporters and affecting macrophage polarization, whereas Sia alters macrophage differentiation via signaling through Siglec-1. Herein, this work describes a macrophage targeting platform using gold nanoparticles (GNPs) functionalized with Man and Sia monosaccharides which exhibit high liver tropism. A single dose of glyco-GNPs can convert macrophages to a restorative phenotype in two completely different immune environments. Man promotes tumor-associated macrophages toward an antitumorigenic activity in a MC38 liver colorectal cancer model by secretion of TNF-alpha, IL -1 beta, and IL -6 in the tumor microenvironment. However, in a proinflammatory environment, as observed in a mouse model of autoimmune disease, primary biliary cholangitis, Man impairs the production of TNF-alpha, IL-1 beta, Arg1, and IL-6 cytokines. The results probe the dual role of Man in macrophage repolarization in response to the immune system. This study is a proof-of-concept that demonstrates that nanomedicine using specific glycans designed to target other immune cells such as myeloid cells, are a promising strategy not only against cancer but also against other pathologies such as autoimmune diseases

Viene richiamata la ricchezza di reliquie che la città vantava in quanto città capitale di Regno e al tempo stesso le ricche dotazioni di monasteri e infine anche del Castello Visconteo. Vengono descritti i manufatti delle diverse tipologie e formati. La sezione finale esamina le memorie agostiniane (capsa argentea di età liutprandea e il cosiddetto pseudosarcofago di sant'Agostino). Il saggio infatti fa parte di una serie di contributi presentati al convegno agostiniano tenuto a Pavia nel novembre 2023
