Role of inflammation in pediatric irritable bowel syndrome

    No full text
Background: IBS affects a large number of children throughout the world and is thought to be the result of disturbed neuroimmune function along with the brain–gut axis. Although the underlying pathophysiologic mechanisms are not clear, the role of low-grade inflammation and mucosal immune activation in IBS symptom generation has become evident also in subsets of pediatric patients. Animal models provided meaningful insight in the causal relationship between abnormal mucosal immune activation and changes in gastrointestinal (GI) sensory-motor function. Likewise, the development of long-standing GI symptoms fulfilling the current criteria for functional GI disorders after infection gastroenteritis and in patients with IBD or celiac disease in remission further supports this hypothesis. Immune activation, its impact on gut sensory-motor function, and potential implications for symptom generation emerged in both children and adults with IBS. Purpose: The aim of this review is to summarize the main evidence on the presence of low-grade inflammation and immune activation in children with IBS, its possible role in symptom generation, and its potential implication for new therapeutic strategies

Open Innovation in Action Models, Metrics, and Use-Cases for Corporate-Startup Collaboration

    No full text
The book serves as both a practical guide for managers looking to implement Open Innovation strategies and an authoritative reference for scholars conducting research in the field. Drawing on nearly two decades of combined academic and practitioner experience in entrepreneurship and open innovation, the authors offer a comprehensive, 360-degree perspective on the topic. Specifically, the book offers a fresh, up-to-date, and practice-driven perspective on how large corporations are implementing open innovation today, with a particular focus on startup collaboration and the most recent, real-world best practices. Leveraging privileged access to Mind the Bridge’s extensive activities - including proprietary research data, C-level executive interviews, and global events - this book offers strategies based on an analysis of various companies across sectors, and geographies that have started, scaled, evolved, reshaped, or even abandoned their open innovation journeys. The book helps corporate and startup executives/founders design, refine, and adapt their own open innovation strategies; identify the models that best fit their needs; understand the organizational and cultural conditions required; and, ultimately, track and measure results in a meaningful way

Embedded readout electronics R&D for the large PMTs in the JUNO experiment

    No full text
Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a next generation liquid scintillator neutrino experiment under construction phase in South China. Thanks to the anti-neutrinos produced by the nearby nuclear power plants, JUNO will be able to study the neutrino mass hierarchy, one of the open key questions in neutrino physics. One key ingredient for a successful measurement is to use high speed, high resolution sampling electronics located very close to the detector signal. Linearity in the response of the electronics is another important ingredient for the success of the experiment. During the initial design phase of the electronics, a custom design with the Front-End and Read-Out electronics located very close to the detector analog signal has been developed and successfully tested. The present paper describes the electronics structure and the first tests performed on the prototypes. The electronics prototypes have been tested and they show good linearity response, with a maximum deviation of 1.3% over the full dynamic range (1-1000 p.e.), fulfilling the JUNO experiment requirements

Measuring unidimensional poverty: a review of the inference literature

    No full text
Poverty measures are typically estimated from sample observations and, therefore, they should not be used only as descriptive statistics, but rather as tools for statistical inference. Statistical analysis with explicit tests and confidence intervals is important to ensure that changes in measured poverty levels within or across countries correspond to real changes. The aim of the paper is to provide a comprehensive review of the main developments on the inferential aspects of the unidimensional poverty indices

On the monetary nature of the interest rate in a Keynes-Schumpeter perspective

    No full text
Keynes in the General Theory, explains the monetary nature of the interest rate by means of the liquidity preference theory. The objective of this paper is twofold. First, to point out the limits of the liquidity preference theory. Second, to present a theory of the monetary nature of the interest rate based on two points: i) the arguments with which Keynes responded to the criticism levelled at the General Theory by supporters of the loanable funds theory such as Ohlin and Robertson; ii) Schumpeter’s analysis of the role of bank money in a capitalist economy. We will show that Schumpeter’s analysis of the relationship between bank money and innovations represents an effective theoretical scheme for the explanation of the monetary nature of the interest rate and of the Keynesian principle of effective demand
