Like “Spring Breeze and Rain”: Exploring Legitimation in a Chinese Official Documentary on Education

    No full text
The present chapter explores processes of meaning generation in the media in the contemporary People’s Republic of China (PRC). It focuses on a 4-episode official documentary entitled 教育强国 [Strengthening the Country through Education], first broadcast by China Central Television in November 2019. The documentary is devoted to the representation of the history of education in the PRC, its development since 1949 and, especially, the strengths and challenges that characterise this crucial domain today. The analysis conducted in this chapter relies on the framework of legitimation in discourse and the symbolic functioning of ideology and adopts an integrated approach which also accounts for the multimodal nature of this audio-visual product. The objective is to identify and highlight the main discursive strategies through which this audio-visual product contributes to the construction of a dominant discourse regarding the transformation of China into an “education powerhouse” and, particularly, on the role played by different social actors—especially the Party-state—in this process

L’intelligenza artificiale e la proprietà intellettuale : le interferenze e la disciplina de iure e de iure condendo

The essay explores the complex intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and intellectual property (IP) law, analyzing the legal implications concerning both the data inputs used to train AI systems and the outputs they generate. Regarding training data, the essay examines the increasing legal disputes over the alleged unauthorized use of copyrighted materials as well as the legality of web scraping for training purposes and the applicability of text and data mining exceptions. Concerning AI-generated outputs, the essay addresses the challenge of securing IP rights, particularly copyright, highlighting the ‘‘human author’’ requirement. Moreover the Author takes into consideration the need to identify IP protection for works deriving from the use of artificial intelligence as a tool in the hand of the human creator. The essay analyzes also the European Union’s regulatory response through the AI Act, the ongoing development of Codes of Conduct under the AI Act and the proposed Italian domestic law on AI, which considers the protection of works created with AI tools if they result from the author’s intellectual work. In conclusion, the essay underscores the necessity of a balanced approach that safeguards IP rights while fostering AI development. It introduces the concept of machine unlearning as a potential technique to address data privacy and IP issues post-training. The author suggests that guiding principles may be more suitable than rigid rules for navigating the evolving relationship between AI and IP

Is It Anorexia? Congenital Duodenal Web

    Get PDF
Congenital duodenal web (CDW) is a rare cause of intestinal obstruction in adults, making diagnosis challenging. We present the case of a 26-year-old woman with chronic epigastric symptoms who recently developed vomiting and significant weight loss. Prolonged compensatory duodenal dilation obscured typical radiological signs and delayed preoperative identification. The diagnosis was confirmed intraoperatively and managed surgically. This case highlights the need to consider CDW in adults with unexplained proximal gastrointestinal obstruction

Adjuvant VaccInation After Conization for the Treatment for CervicAL Dysplasia

This study aimed to evaluate the role of adjuvant HPV vaccination in women undergoing conization for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia. This prospective study assessed factors influencing recurrence in patients undergoing conization for high-grade cervical dysplasia. After conization, patients were counseled on the potential benefits of vaccination. We compared outcomes between two groups: women who underwent conization with adjuvant human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination and observation versus conization with observation only. Data from 281 patients were analyzed, comprising 168 (59.8%) patients in the conization-only group and 113 (40.2%) patients in the conization-plus vaccination group. Vaccinated patients were younger than nonvaccinated patients (38 vs. 45 years, P < 0.001). Positive surgical margins were more frequently observed in the vaccinated group compared with the nonvaccinated group (9.7 vs. 3.6%; P = 0.038). Median follow-up was shorter in the vaccinated group, although this difference was not statistically significant (24.9 vs. 27.8 months; P = 0.395). The risk of developing HPV-related lesions was similar between the vaccinated and nonvaccinated groups (P = 0.594, log-rank test). Likewise, the need for reconization did not differ significantly between the groups (P = 0.593, log-rank test). Multivariate analysis showed no significant impact of HPV vaccination on postoperative outcomes [hazard ratio (HR): 0.50, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.15-1.68) for any lesion; HR: 0.90, 95% CI: 0.47-1.73 for reconization]. This study indicates that adjuvant HPV vaccination does not significantly affect short-term outcomes in women undergoing conization for cervical dysplasia. Ongoing randomized trials will provide more robust evidence to clarify the role of adjuvant vaccination in this setting

Three-Glass Test to Culture Prostate Secretion and Semen of Chronic Prostatitis Patients

: Background/Objectives: Currently, the Meares-Stamey 4-glass and the 2-glass tests are used for diagnosing chronic prostatitis subtypes. Both tests include prostatic massage. Failure to extract prostatic secretions-for any reason-can result in a non-diagnostic test. Evidence from everyday practice and studies shows that expressed prostatic secretions are successfully recovered in less than 50% of the examined patients, and an important number of post-massage urine samples are missing prostatic secretions. This study evaluated a simpler test, the 3-glass (pre-ejaculation, ejaculation, and post-ejaculation) test. We compared it with the 4-glass and the 2-glass tests to detect inflammation and bacteria in men with chronic prostatitis symptoms. Methods: The study population included patients with chronic prostatitis symptoms. Subjects were assigned in each visit to undergo either the 4-glass, the 2-glass test, or the 3-glass test. The comparison among the three tests was based on the percentage of bacterial detection, the percentage of false-negative diagnoses, and the percentage of shifts among chronic prostatitis subtypes in the follow-up visits of recurrent patients. Results: A total of 157 patients were finally evaluated. Fifty-nine (59) patients underwent the 4-glass test (Group A), sixty-seven (67) underwent the 3-glass test (Group B), and thirty-one (31) underwent the 2-glass test (Group C). No statistically significant differences in the comparisons above were found. Conclusions: A comparison of the three diagnostic tests showed equivalence of the total ejaculate culture-based 3-glass test to the conventional prostatic secretion culture-based tests

The paper analyses the role of ecological schemes in the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) of the European Union, with a focus on Regulation (EU) 2021/2115 and national ecoschemes.
